Our St. Vincent DePaul volunteers give out food on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. under the shelter. Our next dates are September 28 and

Treasures from our Tradition Although June is the month most associated with wed-

dings in the United States, September has become more popu-lar in recent years. Wedding celebrations always require some savvy planning, and people who have a talent for hospitality in the mix. At the wedding feast at Cana, the mother of Jesus was recruited to deal with some of the details of the banquet, and when a very understandable crisis arose, she did what she could to rescue the party. Anyone who has ever run out of ice, dessert, or table settings knows the stress!

Slowly, the memory of Jesus Christ’s blessing of this marriage feast led the Church to form a way to bless marriag-es. A thousand years ago weddings migrated from the family home to the doors of the church, where the celebration was held in public view. From this practice came a prayer called the “Nuptial Blessing,” one of the most solemn prayers in our tradition. It is very much like the prayers by which baptismal water and chrism are consecrated, the ordination prayer over a priest, and the Eucharistic Prayers over bread and wine. Four hundred fifty years ago, weddings moved inside the church building. All of this gives married couples good reason to celebrate their anniversaries well, especially with the clinking of glasses filled with good wine. --James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

GOD IS ON THE SIDE OF THE POOR Two of today’s readings make it quite clear that God is on

the side of the poor. Amos describes in detail the exploitation of the poor and needy. The psalm repeats that God acts to benefit the poor and lowly. But Luke turns things upside down, telling a tale of a conflicted steward, about to be fired, who demonstrates his cleverness and is rewarded. Like the community to whom Paul writes in Timothy, these readings are personal, directed to believ-ers, members of the Jewish and Christian communities, who struggle to deal with personal choices about how to conduct their lives. They offer an outline for how God wishes us to live in a world as complicated and as confusing as our own. Copyright (c) J. S.

Men’s Retreat October 25-27 Presented by our Brotherhood of St. Dismas

St. Justin’s Brotherhood of St. Dismas will host a men's retreat on the weekend of October 25-27 at Sacred Heart Retreat Center in Big Bear, California. The retreat begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, October 25, and wraps up on Sunday, October 27, at 1 p.m. The cost is $120.00, all meals includ-ed. In Defense of God’s Likeness Bishop Kevin Vann calls on all Catholics to pray

to defeat SB 24. Please visit tinyurl.com/StopSB24 to tell your legislators to oppose SB 24, which would require all state colleges and univer-

sities to offer students free access to the “abortion pill.” There is an upcoming campaign of 40 Days for Life Septem-

ber 25-November 3. The Diocese of Orange will be holding a 40 Days for Life prayer vigil at all 6 Planned Parenthood locations in Orange County.

Forty Days for Life is a focused prolife campaign with a vision to access God’s power through prayer, fasting, and peaceful vigil to end abortion. The mission is repentance, and with God’s favor, to turn hearts and minds from a culture of death to a culture of life, thus bringing an end to abortion.

The campaign is a 40-day time frame in which people in the local community pledge to pray and fast for an end to abor-tion. They also commit to a 40-day prayer vigil outside of an abor-tion facility. The closest abortion facility to St. Justin parish is: 303 W Lincoln Ave #105, Anaheim, CA 92805, one block away from St. Boniface Church.

“Christ’s Healing Presence” is the theme Fr. Bruce Cwiko-ski and Fr. Raphael Damba will address at the Healing Eu-charist they will celebrate Mon., Sept. 23, at 7:15 p.m. at St. Angela Merici Church in Brea. All those suffering physical-ly, emotionally, spiritually, psychologically, or know others who are, are encouraged to come.

Dear Parents, We are recruiting choir members for our SJM Parish Children's Choir. Membership is open to all children from Grade 3-8. We sing once a month on the third Sunday at the 12:30 p.m. Mass. Practices are on Mon-

days from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Music Room (room 9) of St. Justin Martyr School.

No podemos olvidar la sangre de quienes dieron la vida por el Evangelio de la justicia: Michel Quiroga evangelizador colombiano; Agustina Rivas monjita peruana; Vicente Matute líder indígena hondureño; Marlene Kegler una universitaria de 23 años argentina. Estos son algunos ejemplos de tantos que murieron creyendo que la doctrina cristiana no se puede contener en templos y conventos. Dieron la vida por querer vivir su fe en situaciones de dis-criminación e injusticia. Derramando su sangre se convirtieron en ángeles de justicia que gritan a Dios uniendo sus voces a la de Abel.

Todos estos mártires latinoamericanos murieron a manos de lati-noamericanos. Dieron sus vidas, según la mártir chilena Joan Alsina, como granos de trigo. Y desde el cielo ella nos pide: “Esperamos tu solidaridad. ¿Entiendes ahora lo que significa el Cuerpo de Cristo? Si nosotros nos hundimos es algo de tu esperanza la que se hunde. Solemne Misa y Procesión del Señor de los Milagros En solidaridad y hermandad con nuestros hermanos Católicos de

Ascendencia peruana, la Oficina para Ministerio Hispano de la Dióce-sis de Orange y la Hermandad del Señor de los Milagros Peregrino del Sur de California, ofrecen la “Solemne Misa y Procesión del Señor de los Milagros” donde devotos procesarán y rezarán acompañando a la imagen del Señor de los Milagros en la Catedral de Cristo el día 5 de octubre a las 9:00 a.m. Comenzaremos a las 9:00 a.m. con la solemne Misa, al finalizer la misa haremos una pequeña procession. REFLEXIONES SOBRE LA PALABRA Compartir con los demás

Amós 8:4–7 La primera lectura de hoy habla del fraude y de quienes son deshones-tos y se aprovechan de los pobres. Muchas personas pobres no tienen suficiente para comer; no tienen buena salud; y se ven en la necesidad de aceptar injusticias. Estos son crímenes contra Dios. El juramento divino al final de la lectura asegura que Dios tendrá siempre presentes las acciones de quienes cometen estos abusos y anuncia que serán castigados. 1 Timoteo 2:1–8 Pablo recomienda a Timoteo orar por la humanidad y por los go-bernantes. Las súplicas a Dios por figuras públicas eran comunes en el mundo antiguo. La carta específica “oraciones, plegarias, súplicas y acciones de gracias”. Las oraciones recomendadas no buscan solo el bien de la comunidad cristiana, sino que se extienden a toda la human-idad. Lucas 16:1–13 Esta parábola nos habla de un administrador deshonesto —un hombre del mundo y no uno que creía en Jesús—. Las personas que no creen en Jesús usan sus posesiones para su beneficio propio. Con astucia, buscan siempre aumentar su riqueza material. Parecen estar más ansi-osos por lograr su propósito que los cristianos por lograr el suyo. El pueblo de Dios debe usar mejor sus recursos para llevar a la gente al cielo. En la muerte, todos perderán cualquier riqueza que tengan en este mundo; pero los cristianos fieles recibirán una cálida bienvenida a su hogar eterno en el reino de Dios. Nuestra cultura: En la cultura hispana hay refranes que afirman algunas de las verdades que se expresan en las lecturas de hoy; por ejemplo, “El bien siempre triunfa sobre el mal”, “El dinero no lo es todo” y “El que no tiene a Dios, aunque lo tenga todo, no tiene nada”.

Reflexiones para la homilía En el evangelio de hoy, Jesús nos cuenta la historia del admin-

istrador deshonesto que procura utilizar los recursos a su alcance para asegurar su futuro en la tierra. Esto es algo que podemos entender: todos podemos ser despedidos de nuestros trabajos; sin embargo, la vida terrena se acaba tarde o temprano y no sabemos cuánto tiempo tenemos. Debemos, por eso, ocuparnos más que nada de ser ricos en el cielo.

Jesús contrasta la riqueza de este mundo con la riqueza verdadera —la del cielo que solo Dios puede dar—. Él espera que los creyentes seamos responsables con el dinero y los bienes que nos ha dado en la tierra. Si queremos que nos dé cosas más grandes, primero debemos ser responsables con las cosas pequeñas. Podemos pensar que somos dueños de nuestras posesiones; pero todo lo que tenemos es un présta-mo de Dios (cf. 1 Cr. 29:14). Somos administradores de lo que Él ha puesto a nuestro cuidado. Al morir, no nos llevaremos nada; pero Dios recompensará a quienes confiaron en Él. Las personas para quienes el dinero es lo importante hacen de la riqueza su dios; el dinero se con-vierte en su amo. Aunque digan tener a Dios en su corazón, no podrán servir a Dios y al dinero por igual.

¿Cómo aseguramos el futuro que realmente importa, la vida eter-na? Jesús nos recomienda compartir con los demás. El compartir nos abre puertas a una vida mejor, tanto aquí como en el más allá. Al fi-nal, quienes se dedican exclusivamente a cuidar lo suyo y olvidan a los demás, convierten el dinero en un ídolo, en otro dios al que sirven con pasión y devoción; pero se equivocan, porque solo hay un Dios. Para la reflexión: ¿Cómo juzgo a los demás? ¿Pienso cómo actuaría Dios con ellos?

Una pequeña reflexión: Indeciso continúa

Cuando salió del ejército y trató de encontrar un trabajo arreglando automóviles, no había ningún trabajo en eso, así que hizo cualquier trabajo que encontraba. Al final obtuvo un traba-jo como ayudante de carpintero y pasó el resto de su carrera laboral trabajando en diferentes sitios de construcción y final-mente en una base militar en el servicio civil. Aunque este no era el camino para el que se había entrenado, tenía una familia que mantener y tomó cualquier trabajo que pudiera encontrar. Para él la familia era lo primero. Cuando se jubiló se ofreció como voluntario en su parroquia y más tarde se convirtió en diácono permanente para la iglesia. Me dijo que era el mejor trabajo que había tenido. Desde luego, nunca había pensado en trabajar en la iglesia cuando era más joven, pero cuando se presentó la oportunidad, no podía dejarla pasar. Las ob-ligaciones familiares eran lo primero, pero aun así encontró algo que le trajo alegría.

En cuanto a mí, con el tiempo me enamoré de la Iglesia y mi camino en la vida me llevó a mi congregación religiosa, los Misioneros Claretianos. Respeto y admiro a los hombres con los que vivo y trabajo, y solo quiero seguir siendo parte del gran trabajo que están haciendo en todo el mundo.

Todo esto es para decir que hay muchas maneras de descu-brir el camino propio. Parece que algunas personas encuentran su vocación a una edad muy temprana, y para otras personas requiere tiempo, tropezar en diferentes trabajos, cambiar de especialización universitaria y lidiar con diferentes experiencias de vida antes de que encuentren algo con lo que realmente quieran comprometerse. En el mundo de hoy, aunque estemos capacitados para hacer algo, puede ser que terminemos hacien-do otra cosa, simplemente por la necesidad, la falta de oportuni-dades o incluso la pérdida de interés. En el mundo de hoy, debemos ser estudiantes de por vida con una apertura para ajus-tarnos y adaptarnos a las circunstancias cambiantes y oportuni-dades inesperadas.

Así que si aún no decides qué camino elegir, puedo ofrec-er algunas sugerencias que mi familia me enseñó:

• Esfuérzate para ser una persona de integridad, de valores

y virtudes. Sé alguien en quien otros pueden depender inde-pendientemente del camino que elijas. Eso significa ser una persona de palabra, alguien que no le teme al trabajo duro, al-guien que valora la amistad y tiene compasión hacia los necesit-ados.

• Sé interesante. Obtén toda la educación que puedas y, por supuesto, ten pasatiempos y áreas de interés.

• Sé curioso sobre el mundo y sobre las personas. Haz preguntas sobre cómo se interesaron en el trabajo que realizan y el camino que eligieron. Continuara…
