Walk/Run for the Poor - The Society of St. Vincent de Paul will hold their annual Friends of the Poor 5K Walk/Run on Sunday, October 3 at Sertoma Park Shelter 7. The event begins at 4:00 PM, with registration at 3:30 PM. You may also pre-register at svdpbismarck.org. After the walk/run, a picnic will be served by the Cathedral Knights. There is no registration fee, but free-will offerings for the poor will be gratefully accepted.
Come to The Encounter on Saturday, September 25 at the Cathedral beginning at 7:30 PM. This is a special time of adoration, prayer, confessions, and soft music in a setting of candlelight.
After the Mass, there will be a time of fellowship in the gathering space.
The Serra Club will regularly host a Mass for Vocations and fellowship on the 4th Saturday of each month to pray and learn how we can better support those in existing vocations and those in formation. Join us any time!

What is Pentecost?Pentecost was the sending of the Holy Spirit to the Church by
Jesus Christ, which marked the beginning of the new age of the Church in the fullness of the Spirit.
The Holy Spirit has never been inactive, but rather has been accomplishing from the beginning in hidden ways His joint and inseparable mission with the Father and the Son. “The Breath of God moving over the face of the waters” (Genesis 1:2) is the same Breath that inspired the words and actions of the patriarchs and prophets of old, even to the point of inspiring them to write down their authentic revelatory experience of God in the Sacred Scriptures of the Old Testament. In the fullness of time, the Holy Spirit prepared Mary – who was already full of grace before the Incarnation (c.f. Luke 1:28) – and overshadowed her virginity, making it uniquely fruitful. The Holy Spirit was active all throughout the life of Jesus, who was anointed by the Holy Spirit at his baptism in the Jordan by John the Baptist. Now that The Paschal Mystery has been accomplished in the suffering, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus, the Holy Spirit floods creation with a superabundance of grace 50 days after the New Passover of Easter. The Most Blessed Trinity is now fully revealed as the Third Person is definitively given and fully communicated to the Church. The gates of heaven, which Jesus unlocked during his ascension, are already spilling down upon the earth and will continue to rain down the fiery gifts of the Holy Spirit until the culmination of the cosmos. The supreme gift of the Holy Spirit of Christ, which Jesus sent down upon the apostles in the fullness of time, contains the source of all gifts in their unity and diversity, which are poured into our hearts and received in the depths of our fallen and wounded nature according to our place in the new Body of Christ. If Christ’s proclamation of the Kingdom of God is the conception of the new eschatological Israel we call the Church and the Bride of Christ, Pentecost is her birthday as she begins to grow into her fullness and maturity through time.
Pentecost marks a remarkably new age in how God relates to his people who are now empowered with the fullness of the Holy Spirit. Although Jesus ascended into heaven with his glorified body, he now lives and acts in, with, and through his Church who is united in the Holy Spirit – the permanent personal principle of the Church’s unity. The apostles did mighty works of God with zeal and boldness and handed on the same Spirit they received in the laying on of hands through the sacrament of Confirmation. This sacrament perpetuates the same graces of Pentecost in the life of the Church and gives her a living principle of growth toward spiritual purity and maturity. The Holy Spirit’s constant work of salvation takes place through the sacred liturgy, wherein the Church dispenses the fruits of Christ’s Paschal Mystery until Jesus comes again at the end of time.
To fully participate in this new life and pentecostal power of the Holy Spirit, we must always be docile to and cooperate with His interior and exterior movements of grace so that the gifts of the Holy Spirit can predominate in our daily actions. We must foster the supreme gifts of sanctifying grace and charity in our hearts by continually asking for an ever greater increase of the indwelling of the Holy Spirit at the core of our being. Finally, we must stay close to and act in union with the Holy Spirit by fully and actively participating in the Church’s seven sacraments, most especially the Eucharist, for it is by the power of the Holy Spirit working through the human heart and words of the ordained priest that makes the supreme gift of Jesus’ body substantially present at every mass.

The words we pray at Mass, “Say the Word and My Soul Shall be Healed,” have the power to remind us of the healing that Jesus offers us in the Eucharist which is essential, eternal, and ever open to us. We humbly ask him to say the word, and with that prayer, we have faith that, with the fantastic and improbable prospect of Jesus entering under our roof, our souls shall be healed.
