Today’s Gospel Reflection

1st Reading: Jb 7:1-4, 6-7 * Psalm: Ps 147:1-6 * 2nd Reading: 1 Cor 9:16-19, 22-23 * Gospel: Mk 1:29-39

THE GOOD NEWS Today’s readings begin with a few verses from the book of Job. First, Job com-plains that his nights drag on endlessly. Then, worse yet, “My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle; / they come to an end without hope” (Job 7:6). Not exactly encouraging, these lamentations, not when taken alone. Most of us have been there, though, and the antidote is the “good news” that Paul found so compelling that “an obligation has been imposed on me, and woe to me if I do not preach it!” (1 Corinthians 9:16). Paul felt driven to announce the gospel to as many people as possible, “to save at least some” (9:22). This good news is the mystery of the life, death, and resur-rection of Jesus Christ, who lifted Simon Peter’s mother-in-law from her sickbed with a mere touch of his hand. “The whole town was gathered at the door. He cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons” (Mark 1:33–34)). Our woes and demons are as real as Job’s, and Jesus is our Savior. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Jesus cured many who were sick with various diseases, and He drove out many demons.

- Mark 1:34

JOINING IN GOD’S HEALING OF THE WORLD. Our readings today summon the Church to embrace its calling, to join in God’s healing of the world. As we hear of Job’s anguish, in which all hope and purpose have disappeared, we are reminded of the depth of suffering in the world around us, and perhaps also within our own hearts. We hear of Jesus bringing healing and hope to Simon’s mother-in-law and to the community around Capernaum. And we hear of Paul’s commitment to “become all things to all”, that is, to walk alongside all kinds of people, offering good news of the love of God. We need to be a people who do not hide from broken hearts, including our own. We are to share in the suffering of our world, but also to live as those who can tell the world of a God who brings hope. At our best, we the Church embody God’s great desire to heal the brokenhearted. A TIME TO LAMENT. The poignant description of human suffer-ing in our reading from the book of Job echoes the cries we have heard throughout the world with the coming of the coronavirus. We grieve many losses: of life and health, of jobs and security, of free-dom to be with those we love. We are reminded that many of the psalms are prayers lamenting that the world is often not what it ought to be. In these coronavirus times, we the Church are first called to prayerfully lament: to weep with those who are weeping and to ache for a better world. Our prayer can remind us that, as Paul described in Romans 8, all creation is groaning, and the Holy Spirit is groaning in wordless, shared suffering. We also live in God’s promise to transform our tears into joy. God is eager to bring healing to the world, and we are God’s instru-ments in doing so. We bring God’s gifts of creativity, resourceful-ness, and perseverance to the task. Our prayerful lamentation reminds us of the urgency of God’s work through us. FREED TO SERVE. The first chapter of Mark’s Gospel is very fast-paced, as Jesus begins his ministry on the move. The first scene in today’s passage happens so quickly that it’s easy to miss: Jesus heals Simon’s mother-in-law, and she promptly begins to serve Jesus and the disciples. This woman is never named, and only noted by her relationship with Simon. But she is the first per-son in Mark, once healed by Jesus, to clearly respond as a disci-ple. Her healing frees her to serve Jesus and others, and sparks the healing of many others. Throughout the Gospels, Jesus’ healings restore health, dignity, and a place in the community. They are also a summons to ser-vice. Mark’s brief story highlights that God is always raising up persons and communities, healed of illness or sin or sadness, to join in God’s healing work for others. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Greetings St. Michael Community, Our preschool program provides a unique early childhood program which offers a science, technology, engineer-

ing, and mathematics (STEM) based curriculum to young chil-dren. Coupled with building a faith-based community, children will develop social, emotional, physical, and cognitive abilities which allow them to connect with the societal advances with our ever-changing world. During this pandemic our preschool has taken the proper proto-cols to ensure the health and safety of our students and teach-ers. We are currently accepting applications for our multi-age classroom 2-3.5 years old. The Pre-Kindergarten classroom is currently full. To inquire about enrollment please reach out to [email protected] or call 619.472.5437. At this time, we are unable to give tours due to the pandemic, however, you can visit our website at www.smapreschool.org. In Christ and Education,

Ms. Veronica Dayag Director of Preschool

PHILOSOPHY At St. Michael Preschool we want to share with the educational mission of the Church and each family. We want to build a faith community based on love and social skills. We want to develop a positive selfimage, learn with God-given values and grow in knowing the needs of others surrounding Him. GOAL Our goal at St. Michael Preschool is to encourage each student to develop a relationship with God, to love each other, and to learn to love and love to learn. And lastly, we want them to rec-ognize their uniqueness and importance as a good person. OBJECTIVE To achieve the above-goals, we will provide every spiritual op-portunity with prayer, modeling, respect and acceptance of oth-ers. We will teach them about the consequences for their deci-sions and problem-solving techniques. This can be done age-appropriately by touching their intellectual, physical, social and psychological being

FEAST OF FAITH THE GLORIA (1)

The Gloria, or Glory to God, follows the penitential rite. Both are acts of praise. In the penitential rite, we sing of the mer-cy of Christ. In the Gloria we praise God’s saving action in the universe. The Gloria is a relatively late addition to the Mass. It first appeared in the Roman liturgy in the sixth century, and then it was sung only by the pope—and only on Christmas! With time, the hymn came to be sung by bishops on major feasts, and then by priests; finally, it became the song of the entire assembly. With the advent of more elaborate musical settings, the people gradually stopped singing the Gloria, until this song of the people became the exclusive domain of the priest and the choir. But the liturgical reforms have restored it to its place as primarily the song of the assembly. The language of the Gloria echoes the New Testament canticles. It may be begun by the priest, the cantor, and the entire assembly in varied combinations. The Gloria is some-times called the “greater doxology,” and in some ways it is like an extended, ecstatic version of the familiar doxology (“Glory be to the Father”) prayed in the Divine Office and the rosary. —Corinna Laughlin, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

As a result of the reforms of the Second Vatican Coun-cil, the Church has defined a new pastoral plan for your care whenever you struggle with illness. There are rites for children, a communal rite for celebration in the parish, forms of care for the sick at each stage and transition, and for the desperately ill. There is a much broader interpretation of who may be anointed, including not only the visibly ill, but those battling addiction, or the elderly coping with the frus-trating aches and pains of aging. Children under seven are normally not anointed, since the oil is associated with rec-onciliation. However, children close to that age who have a serious illness often gain a deep level of spiritual insight and maturity, and may benefit from catechesis for the Eucharist. Once admitted to confirmation and/or Eucharist, a sick child should be anointed. It is a great strength of our present rite that a section is included with prayers tailored to the experi-ence and understanding of a child. Considering our recent history of being fairly sparing with this sacrament, the gen-erosity of celebration today is helping us to retrieve an es-sential part of our tradition of reverence for the sick. —Rev.

PRAYER FOR GENEROSITY

St. Ignatius Loyola

Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve You as You deserve;

To give and not to count the cost, To fight and not to heed the wounds,

To toil and not to seek for rest, To labor and not to ask for reward,

Save that of knowing that I do Your will.

STEWARDSHIP A BASIC STEWARDSHIP QUESTION:

ARE YOU SEARCHING FOR GOD?

A priest told this story once to illustrate how im-portant it is to identify what you truly value and then pursue it. He was a teenager, he said, and he and his cousin were playing basketball in his cousin’s driveway. Sud-denly, the cousin realized he had lost a contact lens. This was before the era of disposable contact lens. Back in those days, you bought one pair of hard contact lens and kept them until the next time you had an eye exam. They were costly, and people often found themselves on all fours searching for a missing contact. So it was with the future priest and his cousin. They scoured the driveway and even looked in the surround-ing grass. Alas, no contact lens was found, so they went inside to have a soda. In the house, they told the cousin’s dad what had happened. He immediately went outside and started to search. “It seemed that he was out there forever,” said the priest. “He looked and looked and looked. And amaz-ingly, he found that contact lens. Why did he find the missing lens and we didn’t? Because my cousin and I were looking for a contact, but my uncle was looking for a hundred dollars.” To the priest, this humorous memory held a deeper truth: when we know the value of something, and desire it enough, we will be relentless in our search for it. For Christian stewards, the search for God in our lives can never be a half-hearted, tepid re-sponse. It must be all or nothing. The search is a lifelong commitment. Thomas Merton offered a basic principle of stewardship: “A life is either all spiritual or not spiritual at all.” What is the stewardship question for me? Am I ready and willing to commit to the long search for God in my life? - International Catholic Stewardship Conference Parish E-Bulletin, Feb..2021

STEWARDSHIP PRAYER For February

Merciful God, We embark on our journey of renewal through difficult and uncertain times; times of division

and strife, and for many suffering and discouragement. But our journey is with your son, Jesus, who bore his cross

and suffered in ways we cannot imagine. We journey with Jesus toward the great paschal feast of Easter, where we have the grace to experience true

the joy of Resurrection. Teach us to be good stewards of your mercy and forgiveness, so that we may extend these

gifts to others. Give us the strength to bear witness to your son at all times, even during these times

of stress and adversity. And fill our hearts with love that we may be faithful to the Gospel

Jesus proclaimed and ready to celebrate our unity with him and each other.

Grant this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen

A STEWARDSHIP MOMENT

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Weekend of February 6/7, 2021

In today’s Gospel we encounter a great number of suffering peo-ple who seek the healing touch of Jesus: “The whole town was gathered at the door.” Jesus could not possibly respond to them all. But the Gospel also reveals Jesus, after praying in solitude, sensing an urgency to proclaim the Good News of his Father’s love to those who suffer in the nearby villages and towns and being present to them. Stewards are called to follow in Jesus’ footsteps, to respond to those who suffer with compassion. How are we responding to the suffering in our world? How are we using our gifts to continue the work of Christ’s redemptive heal-ing? - International Catholic Stewardship Conference Parish E-Bulletin, Feb..2021

FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WHAT DO YOU WANT?

Jesus was starting to become very popular, at least with the ordinary people. They had seen how he had cured the sick and cast out demons. The gospel has one unusual sentence about those demons: Jesus did not let them speak “because they knew who he was.” (Mk 1:34) Apparently, the demons would have identified him as the Son of God. Jesus knew the people would not understand this and try to proclaim him as their king. Jesus had no intention of living as a worldly king, in comfort and riches. In fact, he came to free people from needing wealth and power. Popularity and wealth do not interest St. Paul, either. When he preaches the gospel, the good news of Christ’s resurrection (and ours), he needs no other recompense. (1 Cor 9:18) All he wants is to share eternal life. He specifically refuses to be paid for his preaching, to show that he will be rewarded by Christ. So what do you hope for; what is your goal in life? Do you only feel secure when you have saved enough money and invested it wisely? Do you need other people to make you happy? Or at least a few hundred Facebook friends? Or are you like Job in the first read-ing: having no hope of escaping a life of drudgery? He eventually found that only by trusting God can anyone be happy, even when things go wrong. We can follow Paul’s example of love for all people no matter who they are. Paul’s love was not to make others like him. He genu-inely wanted to bring the good news to them: by his love for them, Paul showed that God loves them even more. He knew the gospel requires a change of heart, so his love for others helped them to be more open to change. Let us ask the Lord to fill us with his love, so that we can help each other to hear the good news. Tom Schmidt, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

DO YOU KNOW WHERE THE ASHES FOR ASH WEDNESDAY COME FROM?

Ash Wednesday is on February 17th, 2021. You may have been wondering where these ashes come from. “Per instructions of the Roman Missal, ashes are typically supposed to be made from last year’s Palm Sunday palm branches. These branches are then burned down into a fine powder and are mixed with holy water or chrism oil to create a light paste.“ https://www.catholicnewsagency.com/news/where-do-ash-wednesday-ashes-come-from-94988

You may bring your old palm branches from last year to be included in the burning of palm leaves for Ash Wednesday. Please bring them to the office before February 12 (Friday).

PRAYER TO CARE FOR OUR COMMON HOME

Father of all, Creator and ruler of the universe, You entrusted your world to us as a gift.

Help us to care for it and all people, that we may live in right relationship-- with You,

with ourselves, with one another, and with creation.

Christ our Lord, both divine and human, You lived among us and died for our sins.

Help us to imitate your love for the human family by recognizing that we are all connected— to our brothers and sisters around the world,

to those in poverty impacted by environmental devastation, and to future generations.

Holy Spirit, giver of wisdom and love, You breathe life in us and guide us. Help us to live according to your vision,

stirring to action the hearts of all—individuals and families, communities of faith, and civil and political leaders.

Triune God, help us to hear the cry of those in poverty, and the cry of the earth, so that we may together care

for our common home. Amen.

This prayer from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops is based on Pope Francis' Laudato Si': On Care for Our Common Home. .

Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our

protection against the wickedness and the snares of the devil. May God

rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host - by the Divine Power of God - cast into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits, who

roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

CAMPAIGN PRAYER

Heavenly Father, we ask for Your divine guidance as we prayerfully move toward the realization of our new parish center. Show us the way to meet the needs of our grow-ing parish community. Lead us to committing ourselves with a spirit of true sacrifice. For it is always by sacrifice that we show our love of You and our neighbor.

Lead us to wisely use our time, talents and treasures as we move forward with Your holy vision. Inspire us all out of Your generous love, to be equally generous for strengthening Your Church and our parish.

Spirit of God, we praise You and adore You. We pray that Your Spirit will empower us to work strongly for the realization of our dream so that future generations will harvest the fruits of our commitments and sacrifice.

This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Mary Mother of God, pray for us. St. Joseph the Builder, pray for us.

Amen. Maria Madre de Dios, ruega por nosotros. San Jose Constructor, ruega por nosotros. San Miguel, Arcangel, ruega por nosotros.

BE REMEMBERED FOREVER. Have the names of your beloved departed inscribed on a brick in “Our Lady of Sorrows Memorial Garden” walls. The names on the memorial walls will forever become part of the Garden.

Ask about the PERPETUAL MEMORIAL WALLS (for the living and deceased) in the church vestibule.

Names on these walls are included in our Mass with special intentions every First Friday of the month.
