TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Job experienced months of misery and troubled nights (Job 7:1-4, 6-7). Psalm — Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted (Psalm 147). Second Reading — I have become all things to all, to save at least some (1 Corinthians 9:16-19, 22-23). Gospel — Jesus cured many who were sick with various diseases (Mark 1:29-39). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 1 Kgs 8:1-7, 9-13; Ps 132:6-7, 8-10; Mk 6:53-56 Tuesday: 1 Kgs 8:22-23, 27-30; Ps 84:3-5, 10-11; Mk 7:1-13 Wednesday: 1 Kgs 10:1-10; Ps 37:5-6, 30-31, 39-40; Mk 7:14-23 Thursday: 1 Kgs 11:4-13; Ps 106:3-4, 35-37, 40; Mk 7:24-30 Friday: 1 Kgs 11:29-32; 12:19; Ps 81:10-11ab, 12-15; Mk 7:31-37 Saturday: 1 Kgs 12:26-32; 13:33-34; Ps 106:6-7ab, 19-22; Mk 8:1-10 Sunday: Lv 13:1-2, 44-46; Ps 32:1-2, 5, 11; 1 Cor 10:31 — 11:1; Mk 1:40-45

The Pastor’s Corner

Job's assessment today is pretty grim: "I shall not see

happiness again."

That's a heavy determination. Perhaps, in light of

the first reading's being selected in light of the

Gospel, it has something to do with a mother-in-

law. Regarding the passage from Mark, there are

those who wonder if Peter's threefold denial had

anything to do with Jesus' curing of his mother-in-

law today.

Whimsy aside, the question can be asked why the

passage from Job was chosen to complement our

Gospel reading. Perhaps the misery and troubled

nights Job speaks of are meant to be matched to

Jesus' healing of the sick and demon possessed.

Another possible echo: Jesus goes out in the dark of

night to have time alone with his Father. This

nighttime vigil perhaps corresponds with Job's

description of troubled nights, the night dragging on

till the dawn as he is filled with restlessness.

Unfortunately, while Jesus spontaneously seeks out

time with his God, delighting in that communion

more than anything else, for you and me we often

find a myriad of other things taking priority in our

life. It can take misery, distress that robs us of sleep,

to drive us to prayer, to finally seek out God when all

else fails.

Job can teach us that those moments of trial are

some of the richest opportunities for prayer: anguish

flings wide the door to the merciful heart of

God. Jesus can teach us that with time and practice,

we can delight in this communion even when all is

going well, not needing prodding to impel us to pray.

The Lord heals the brokenhearted: we can savor this

reality today.

LECTURAS DE HOY

Primera lectura — Job declara que la vida en la tierra es

monótona, miserable y triste (Job 7:1-4, 6-7).

Salmo — Alaben al Señor, que sana los corazones

quebrantados (Salmo 147 [146]).

Segunda lectura — Pablo dice que no tienen otra

alternativa sino la de predicar el Evangelio

(1 Corintios 9:16-19, 22-23).

Evangelio — Después de sanar a muchos enfermos,

Jesús predica la Buena Nueva (Marcos 1:29-39). Salmo responsorial: Leccionario Hispanoamericano Dominical © 1970, Comisión Episcopal Española. Usado con permiso. Todos los derechos reservados.

LECTURAS DE LA SEMANA Lunes: 1 Re 8:1-7, 9-13; Sal 132 (131):6-7, 8-10; Mc 6:53-56 Martes: 1 Re 8:22-23, 27-30; Sal 84 (83):3-5, 10-11; Mc 7:1-13 Miércoles: 1 Re 10:1-10; Sal 37 (36):5-6, 30-31, 39-40; Mc 7:14-23 Jueves: 1 Re 11:4-13; Sal 106 (105):3-4, 35-37, 40; Mc 7:24-30 Viernes: 1 Re 11:29-32; 12:19; Sal 81 (80):10-11ab, 12-15; Mc 7:31-37 Sábado: 1 Re 12:26-32; 13:33-34; Sal 106 (105):6-7ab, 19-22; Mc 8:1-10 Domingo: Lv 13:1-2, 44-46; Sal 32 (31):1-2, 5, 11; 1 Cor 10:31 11:1; Mc 1:40-45

PARISH NEWS

Annual Catholic Appeal

In two weeks (next weekend), on Feb 10-11, we will once again be given the opportunity to be Christ to others. How do we help a family that has suffered great loss? How do we help the homeless man or woman who is looking for a way out of poverty? How do we provide emotional support where it is needed most? As Catholics in the Diocese of Sacramento, we have a way to help those truly in need. By making a generous donation to the Annual Catholic Appeal, you can live the Gospel message to help our brothers and sisters. Our parish received 25% to serve our local ministry to others. The charitable works of the Church, whether in Catholic social service programs or parish-based outreach ministries, depend on all of us. Each of our gifts, no matter the amount, really does make a difference in someone’s life. Please prayerfully consider what you can give. Our gift is the Heart of Mercy in Northern California.

Little Black Books Little Black Books OR Daily Devotionals for Lent will be available in English and Spanish for Adults and Little Purple Books for children ages 5-12 in English. These books are a nice addition to your Lenten journey and preparation for Easter. They continue to be $1 each and will be available for sale after all of the weekend masses.
