From the Pastor
Dear parishioners,
As I’m writing this, I’m listening to Dvorak’s Carnival Overture. Evidently Dvorak described it as “a lonely wanderer reaches the city at nightfall where a carnival is in full swing”. Try as I might, I can’t imagine or feel the carnival. It’s no fault of the Vienna Philharmon- ic. It’s just that I have trouble experiencing the themes of this type of music. The only one I’ve ever felt like I got is the 1812 Overture.
I don’t have the same problem with Scripture, though. Scripture speaks to me, or God speaks to me through it. I think it should be
that way for everybody, but it may not be possible. During the readings at Mass, though, we are supposed to feel God’s presence. The Church teaches that one of the ways our Lord is truly present in the Mass is in the Word proclaimed.
When the Entrance Rites are complete and we have prayed the Opening Prayer, we go right to Scripture. On Sundays we have three readings which give us a good selection of Scripture over a three year cycle. In Year A we hear from the Gospel according to Matthew, Year B from Mark and Year C from Luke. The Gospel accord- ing to John is used during the special seasons, Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter. We also hear from the Gospel according to John, a bit, during Ordinary Time of Year B because Mark’s Gospel is short enough to allow for it.
We also have a reading from what we call the Old Testament, on Sundays which is chosen to support a theme found in the Gospel reading. And, we have a non-Gospel reading from then New Testament. The non-Gospel New Testament reading is not chosen to support a particular theme but is semi-continuous from week to week.
The books which contain these assigned readings is called the Lectionary. The Lectionary method implies that one person proclaims the reading from the Lection- ary and everyone else listens, allows the Word to wash over them, as I like to say.
I get great joy out of seeing people listening intently to the readings being pro- claimed. I highly recommend this intentional listening and recommend that we pay attention to any words or phrases that jump out at us, so to speak. This may be a way that the Holy Spirit, or our own spirit, is trying to raise something to our aware- ness. It is a way that the Lord speaks to us through the Scriptures. From what peo- ple tell me, many experience the Lord speaking to them in this way.
The homilist is required, on Sundays, to preach from the Scripture readings. My theory is that the homily should help people connect with the Scriptures and set the stage for our Lord to speak to us through them. That is why I oftentimes conclude with “The question for us is…”
I think it is good for us to reread the Scripture during the week and hold on to the words or phrases which jumped out at us. Oftentimes, as we hold on to them during the week, something else will happen which will seem to be connected and may il- lustrate what the Lord is trying to say to us. We might ask ourselves how these words or phrases are connected to our day-to-day lives. What is the Lord trying to say to me? How should I respond in the way I live my life? What action should I take?
At Sunday Mass, we say one of the Creeds and then go to the General Intercessions, or Prayers of the Faithful as they are commonly called. One of our deacons currently write the General Intercessions for us and I believe they do an excellent job of con- necting them to the themes of the Gospel. They should do that because this prayer is a response to the Lord speaking to us in the Word proclaimed. I hope you can hear the connections. This concludes the Liturgy of the Word.
