“Die paramedici was ongelooflik.

Sywasvirdriedae indiehospitaalwaar

“Dis asof ek

Gelukkig in haar tuinSAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG

WANNEERmev.

Mev. Albers woon reeds vir 62jaar in dieselfde huis in Van derStelstraat.

My broers wou nie boernie.

“Ek kon leesvoor ek skool toe is. Ek het in ’nhuis grootgeword waar boeke ’nbaie belangrike plek gehad het.Ons was ’n lesende familie.”

Program ’n ‘belegging in studentesukses’SAMANTHA VAN DEN BERG

IN ’n poging om studente se dinklees-vaardighede te verbeter is ’n e-leer-program in gevorderde taalvaardig-

hede vandeesweek by die UniversiteitStellenbosch (US) bekend gestel.

THROUGHOUT a young adultmale’s life, the search for the per-fect body is always lingering atthe back of one’s mind.

Society’s pressure always re-minds you that you have to havea six pack and to “flex yourpecks” whenever the opportuni-ty presents itself.

For Matthew McConaugheyandaselectedgroupofpeopleoutthere, these opportunitiesabound. Any occasion can be-come one where you can takeyour shirt off. Unfortunately, this is not the case for the vastmajority of us (and please, I’mspecifically referring to menhere).

Which bringsme back to mypoint. This con-stant yearning tohave a phat body(Americanism),drives us to dosilly things.

Fresh are thememories of a few years backwhen we stuffed ourselves withCreatine and apple juice... yes, apple juice improves its absorp-tion. Never mind the fact thatprofessional sportsmen struggleto achieve much with it and thatwe would have seen negligiblemuscle gain, if any. It was theidea that counted.

Since then I have tried variousother techniques and in some

sense given up on the idea sinceI have landed my lovely wife andhonestly, just couldn’t be both-

ered.It turned out

that my onefriend had otherideas when weboth joined theUniversity gymabout two yearsago.

To be fair, the whole idea of re-living a part of my student lifewasappealingandwetackled theweights with a vengeance oncemore - no booster food this timethough.

Being young working adults,we had a little superiority com-plex as we had to tell ourselvesthat we were in some way betterthan either the brawny rugbybuffs or the cool-looking, design-

er-gymwear wearing students.Appearances also had to be

kept up for the sake of the lovelyyoung ladies around the place.

The result of this cunning so-cial manoeuvring was that wecompletely overtaxed ourselvesand within six months, the jokewas over and we returned to ourold ways.

It has to be said that summeralso played a role - it is a soulcrushing experience to head offinto the fluorescent sweatfestthat is a gym, while everyone elsejogs, strolls or meanders in thesunny outdoors.

While laying low for the nextfew months (including a marvel-lous December holiday) and pil-ing on the pounds, we made theheady decision to rejoin someform of gym to halt the down-wards spiral.

This time opting for one of themore conventional normal towngyms, we were pleasantly sur-prised to find more regular peo-ple like us there.

Don’t get me wrong. You still get the guys we secret-

ly make fun of and the ladies arejustassoftontheeyes, butat leastwe can relate a bit more.

Who knows what will happenwhenthefruit treesstartbuddingand the vines start sproutingleaves - it may turn out that ourhiatus will be a little shorter thisyear.

Mixed blessingTHEfirst year studentshavearrivedandStellenboschUniver-sity’s campus is abuzz.

We welcome these 5 000 new students and also those at otherlocal institutions of learning to Stellenbosch. We hope theywill enjoy their “stay” in our town. May it bring them intellec-tual stimulation, camaraderie and fun-filled days.

Theannual influxofstudentsispartof theStellenboschexpe-rience,partof theessential “senseofplace”of this town.Youngpeoplebringnewlife tooldvenues, youngpeople lift ourspiritsand bring new inspiration. The student body also gives a sub-stantial and much needed lift to the local economy.

However, the influx of more than 30 000 students is a mixedblessing in a small town with limited infrastructure.

If the traffic jam on Wednesday - when thousands of bewil-deredparentsandstudents struggled to find theirway throughour narrow streets - is any indication of the rest of the year’straffic problems, Stellenbosch is in grave trouble.

Was no thought given to the possibility of staggering theentry of 5 000 students over a number of days? Do universityauthorities have any idea of the effect such a sudden influxof vehicles has on the normal traffic flow and working activi-ties in a tiny, densely populated town centre?

The university is an integral part of Stellenbosch. A studentbody of this magnitude has an enormous impact on the resi-dents’ lives and livelihood. Every effort should therefore bemade by the university to mitigate its effect on the town andits residents. Students, as our special visitors, are most wel-come in Stellenbosch. However, the rule that should apply is“When in Rome, do as the Romans do”.

Jan Sleet, Stellenbosch,write:

I’m sorry, Planet Earth, fortoday I stopped recycling myrubbish.

I was so pleased that the mu-nicipality began “recycling”waste collection and happilyfilled my clear bags (buying myown when none were given tome) to sort my refuse into sepa-ratebins,knowingthat Iwasre-ducing the amount of non-bio-degradablestuff thatwouldoth-erwise end up in landfill sites.

But now, despite two years ofcalls and correspondence, Stel-lenbosch Municipality havenot solved my issue. In our

street (quite a busy thorough-fare), the bins are not emptieduntil the afternoon, by whichtime, every bag (clear or black)hasbeenshreddedupto five lotsof “searchers”, leaving me withawheeliebinanddrivewaycov-ered in bones, wrappings, foodscraps, bathroom waste, etc. Ihave had maggots and rats onseveral occasions.

All my carefully sorted wasteis dumped together after the“searchers” have taken whatthey want - any solutions, please?! I don’t want to stop re-cycling, but at the moment I amwasting my time as it all endsup in a heap.

“Januarie / Februarie is dierypwordingsperiode.

Daar was heelwat siektes, maardit is goed bestuur.

“Nóg ’n hittegolf of onverwag-te reën, sal ’n invloed hê. Die be-stuurhiervanendiebesluitewatindividue gaan neem, sal bepaalhoegrootdieinvloedgaanwees.”

VINPRO INLIGTINGSDAG

It was also named the Best DevelopingProject at the Eskom Expo for Young Scien-tists in Johannesburg.

According to the pupils, the project wasto make their community, who listens to theradio, aware that expensive batteries lastlonger.

“We didn’t expect to win, because wedidn’thaveaschoolcompetition.Wejustvol-unteered to take part in the regional compe-tition to make our community more aware,”said Hlaleleni.

“We would love to see China and experi-ence what happens there while also havinga look at their advanced technology,” addedNtshidi.

Their teacher Marilynn Solomons saidsince they only had assistance from theirteachers, this achievement is even more out-standing.

“Their initial hypothesis didn’t work outso they chose another topic. There were ob-

stacles they had to overcome and they hadto put in extra work during their exams withlimited resources. They couldn’t go to a laband expect everything to be there.

“If they were at a more privileged school, they would be scientists going to the moonby now.”

Solomons said this could also be a lesson

to other pupils that a simple project can bechosen to represent South Africa because “itdoesn’t need to be a far-fetched idea”.

The pupils need help for their travellingexpenses and have asked for donations.

Contzen, Magalhaes and Amici

THE Endler Concert Series will be-gin its 2012 season on 7 Februaryat 20:00 with a concert of beautiful

chamber music.World famous German / Japanese vio-

linist,MirijamContzenwill teamupwiththe Amici String Quartet and locallybased Portuguese pianist, Luis Magal-hães inaprogrammeofMozart,Schubertand Chausson. The Amici Quartet, hailed inDieBurgeras “Gratification forthe soul,” consists of Suzanne Martens(guest concertmaster of the Cape Phil-harmonic and violin lecturer at Stellen-boschUniversity),QuentinCrida (leaderof Camerata Tinta Barocca), KarinGaertner (principle violist of the now de-funct Cape Town Symphony Orchestra)and cellist, Peter Martens, winner of the2011ClassicalmusicSAMAforhisCDre-cording of the complete Beethoven CelloSonatas with pianist Luis Magalhães.

The concert will begin with Schubert’sRondo in A major for violin and stringquartet, D. 438 with Mirijam Contzen asthe solo violinist. The work, a classic fa-

vourite in its guise for violin and stringorchestra, will be presented in its origi-nal form, a chamber version where astring quartet replaces the larger forcesof the string orchestra.

Mozart rewrote the accompanimentsto a number of his piano concerti forstring quartet for his own performance. One these most popular rewrites is forhis concerto No. 14 in E flat major, K. 449,which in this concert will feature LuisMagalhães as the piano soloist.

After the interval, all six musicianswill join forces in Chausson’s Concertoin D major for violin, piano and StringQuartet, Op. 21, a piece that despite itsunusual combination of instruments, isrecognised as one of the greatest exam-ples ofFrenchRomantic chambermusic.

Tickets at R110 and R85 are availableat Computicket outlets countrywide oron08619158000.Theboxofficeat theEnd-ler Hall opens at 19:00 on the night. Forfurther enquiries, please call the EndlerHallConcertSerieson0218082343duringoffice hours. Luis Magalhães

Akademia vir Afrikaanse studenteDIE Solidariteit Beweging se nu-we Afrikaanse hoëronderwysin-stelling, Akademia, begin van-jaar met vier onderrigprogram-me (drie sertifikate en ’ndiploma).

Dit kan so vroeg as volgendejaar sy eerste graad aanbied.

Danksy die nuutste telematiesetegnologie gaan Akademia inter-aktiewe klasse regoor Suid-Afri-ka by verskeie leersentrums aan-bied.

maak.”VolgensBuysstyg joukanseom

Your solutions tohealth and fitness

IT’S not the obstacles in ourjourney to better wellnessthat are the problem – let’s

face it, they’ll always be there –but ratherhowwedealwith themthat matters.

By identifying the things thatstand between you and a healthi-er life and by turning weaknessesinto challenges, you can set real-istic goals.

) Identify your hurdlesAs with any problem in life, de-

nying the factors that derail yourfitness goals will only get worseover time.

) Shift your mindBy understanding the reasons

behind poor fitness and diet deci-sions, you can identify negativepatterns and make positive choic-es in the future.

) Trust your instinctsSometimes, procrastinating

with a certain task is your bodyand mind’s way of avoiding some-thing out of sensibility. Some-

times it’s okay to give it a rest. Ifyou’re getting hunger pangs fromtime to time, it’s okay to eat whatyou’re craving for.

) Turn weaknesses into chal-lenges

In fitness, an “all or nothing”mentality can lead to frustrationand destroy your motivation alto-gether.

) When you’ve fallen off the

wagonWith some planning you can

survive andeven findyourself re-charged by a short fitness hiatus. The trick is to exercise damagecontrol.

Remember that any setback istemporary – don’t give up on yourwellness goals.

CFL

Everyone looking to renew their spent CFLs for free

raise your hands!

www.eskom.co.za/idm

Five years ago, we managed to convertmillions of South Africans to using CFLenergy saving light bulbs and savedyou money. Now, five years later, we’reback to change your energy saversthat have reached the end of theirlife. Continue to use energy savers tocollectively save South Africa’s energy.

Energy saving lightbulbs have anenvironmental benefit because they cut your lighting cost by using less electricity and last up to eight times longer, resulting in a reduction in greenhouse gases. The small amount of mercury that energy saving lightbulbs contain is almost used upby the time the lightbulb is ready for disposal. So try not to break the lamp and dispose of CFLs at participating retailers.

Old CFLs can be exchanged for new ones in two ways: a. There will be a door-to-door exchange (people will come to your door to do the exchange).b. Self exchange points will be set up in certain areas, where you will be able to go and do the exchange.

Don’t miss out! Save energy and save money!

The exchange period will run from November 2011 to January 2012.

BLITSBOKKE

“Ek sien Bloemfontein steeds as my huis.
