wat in 2010 by haar gediagnoseer is.

    Eikestadnuus het vandeesweek met Nellie

oor kanker gesels as deel van n reeks artikels

in aanloop tot die Cansa Relay For Life Stel-

lenbosch aan die einde van die maand.

Nellie het op 11 Oktober 2010 vir n roetine-

ondersoek gegaan toe die dokter n knop in

haar bors gekry het. Sy is na n spesialis ver-

    wys waarna symet borskanker gediagnoseer

is. Sy moes n reeks chemo-behandelings en

    bestraling ontvang.

My eerste reaksie was skok en ongeloof,

omdat ek dit glad nie verwag het nie. Daarna

was ek positief.

van Suid-Afrika (Kansa) as vrywilliger be-

trokke geraak. Sy neem nou jaarliks aan ge-

weekliks self na die Eikestadnuus se

    kantoor in Alexanderstraat om dit

persoonlik op te tel. Die personeel

hier het hom selfs later Oom Eike-

    stadnuus gedoop.

Sy grootse bekommernis nou is eg-

ter oor hoe hy syEikestadnuus in die

    Strand gaan kry, s hy.

    Vir Stellenbosch gaanhy baiemis.

Ek het baie lekker hier gebly en

baiemense sien kom en gaan. Ek het

    almal geken.

Oom Fanie het vir jare lank by die

    destydse De Wets Algemene Hande-

laar gewerk. Hy was ook by die Stel-

    lenbosch-Wes-gemeente se kategese-

    klasse betrokke.

Hy het destyds die rugbyspelers se

klere tydens hul oefening byVan der

Stel opgepas en selfs na die tennis-

    klub se gronde omgesien.

Kinders is egter sy grootste liefde

    envir jarehetOomFanie dit ophom-

    self geneem om Stellenbosse skool-

    leerlinge tehelpomdiepadveiligoor

    te steek.

Hy het met die skoolpatrollie by

    Laerskool Eikestad en Rhenish uit-

gehelp en kinders ook gehelp om die

    pad by gevaarlike verkeersligte oor

    te steek.

Ek is baie lief vir kinders enhulle

vir my, s hy met n groot glimlag.

    VolgensJohanhet syFanieooknie

    geskroom om verkeersoortreders

    reg te help nie.

As iemand op n geelstreep gepar-

keer het, het hy sommer reguit na

hulle toe geloop en vir hulle geswat

hulle verkeerd doen. Hy kan dit nie

vat as iemand die verkeersrels oor-

    tree nie.

    Totsiens Oom Fanie, Stellenbosch

    gaan jou baie mis!

HERITAGE Day will be celebrated with a public holiday onMon-

day. Some confusion reigns about the meaning of this day, espe-

cially since it has also become known as Braaidag during the

    last few years!

The purpose ofHeritageDay is to encourage all SouthAfricans

to celebrate their wonderful cultural heritage and diversity.

We all agree that the citizens of this most southern country of

Africa have very diverse cultures, and that braaivleis is probably

the one thing that we all have in common!

Stellenbosch folkwill get theopportunityover the longweekend

for a braai, and will also get to celebrate their heritage at the first

Heritage Festival, which will be held on the banks of the Eerste

    River.Thewiderangeofactivitiesonofferincludesportandmusic

representative of all the cultures of Greater Stellenbosch as

well as a church service in Pniel on Sunday and a mass choir

of 700 local pupils in the Kruiskerk on Monday.

The Kayamandi Art and Culture Festival, which starts today,

also forms part of the Heritage Festival.

Every resident of Greater Stellenboch is therefore invited to

go and share his or her heritage during the coming days, and to

celebrate it with others. Please find the full programme of festival

activities on page 6 of Eikestadnuus.

Sundaywill also herald another importantmilestone in the his-

tory of Stellenbosch: the 90th memorial service of the Volkskerk

of Africa, which will be held at 15:00 in Idas Valley.

The Volkskerk is a church with a rich history and tradition,

and one that has played an important role, not only in Stellen-

bosch, but also in the rest of the country.

    amptelik aansoek doen.

    Dit is heeltemal onduidelik hoe-

    Die werklike probleme met lo-

want baie van die loseerders is stu-

IN the opinion of the Stellenbosch

    Interest Group (SIG), certain de-

    velopment rights on Botmaskop,

granted in 2006, lapsed in 2008.

    Since 8 July 2011 representa-

    tions requesting compliancewith

the law have beenmade by a firm

of attorneys on behalf of the SIG.

    The SIG was accordingly pleased

    to learn that themunicipality has

now called for an external legal

    opinion to clarify the position.

The background to this issue is

the following: on 5 October 2006,

    the provincial government

    granted approval for the develop-

    mentofahoteland15resortunits,

    eachwith four en-suite rooms, on

portion 2 of the Farm Amoi

number 490, subject to some 50

    conditions. This very steep and

    highly visible property extends

    eastward from an existing resort

known as African Valley to a

point less than a kilometre from

the survey beacon on the summit

    of Botmaskop.

    Condition 45 of the approval

    granted states that the rezoning

shall lapse if it is not exercised for

    an uninterrupted period of two

years. By 5 October 2008 no devel-

    opment had taken place, the

    approval lapsed and the matter

    should have ended there.

    Rather surprisingly, however,

    municipal officials approved

    plans for amore ambitious devel-

    opmenton thepropertyon22July

2009. After becoming aware of the

    situation the SIG made represen-

tations to the premier, the minis-

    ter of environmental affairs and

    development planning and the

    Stellenbosch Municipality.

Apart from a highly visible and

    imposing gatehouse, no other de-

velopment on the site has taken

    place since 2009.

    The proposed development

    referred to as StellenboschMoun-

    tain Retreat, however, continues

to be advertised on the Internet as

comprising a number of lodges, a

hotel and a business hub. The

intention to develop the latter fa-

    cility has, however, never been

    advertised.

    Making legal representations

    about unlawful development is a

    costly process. The SIG, accord-

    ingly,wishes to commend themu-

    nicipality for seeking an external

    legalopinion toaddress this issue.

insights on economic development and the Green Economy concept. Cargill present

ed the Premiers strategy for economic development which links the economy to the

with local community and business leaders which was held on 10 September 2012.

The Western Cape Government launched their campaign in June 2012 with the slo

    R44 upgrade due

An upgrade of the R44 between

    Stellenbosch and Somerset West

    is on the cards.

    After months of planning and

    research the Department of

    Transport andPublicWorkswill

    be implementing the upgrade of

    the R44.

This road is a high speed mo-

    bility route which carries signif-

    icant volumesof traffic daily and

    has shown increased traffic vol-

umes over the last few years.

    A study undertaken by con-

    sulting engineers Kantey and

    Templer has identified the need

    to implementarangeof improve-

ments along the route. These in-

    clude, amongst others, the clo-

sure of median openings and the

    consolidationand/or relocation

    of accesses and intersections.

    Both the Annandale and Win-

    eryRoadintersectionshavebeen

    identified for specific and sub-

    stantial improvement to grade

    separated roundabouts. This

would allow for free flow traffic

    interchanges and the ability to

    provide for traffic return flow,

    for property access purposes.

    MinisterofTransportandPub-

    licWorks,RobinCarlisle,hasan-

    nounced that CCA Environmen-

    tal Consultants have been ap-

    pointed to undertake an

    environment impact assessment

    regulatory process for the pro-

    posed road improvements.

    The R44 between Somerset

    West and Stellenbosch is now

    one of our busiest provincial

roads. If we do not invest in ma-

jor junction upgrades, it will be-

come one of our most dangerous

    roads. The vital industries

    served by the road, including

    farming and tourism, have

    grown tremendously in recent

    years, and the safety andmobili-

ty of the road must grow with

    them, said Carlisle.

The Bredell Road / R44 Inter-

    sectionhasbeen identified foran

    immediate intersection safety

    improvement.

    After engaging with a number

    of user groups, the Department

    will thencommencewiththisim-

    provement.

    For safety purposes, this im-

    provement will involve closing

    the current R44 access into

    BredellRoadfrombothSomerset

    West and Stellenbosch and pro-

viding for only a left turn-out

from Bredell Road onto the R44.

The result will be a significant

improvement in safety at this in-

    tersection which will offset the

    slightly longer travel times re-

sulting for trips to Bredell Road

    destinations, added Carlisle.

    A basic assessment process

    will commence shortly, which

    will involve substantial public

    participation at which all inter-

ested and affected parties will be

    invited to be participants.

    Further details about the R44

    corridor planwill be provided at

    the commencement of this proc-

    ess.

Should you wish to register as

    an interested and affected party

    please submit your details to

    [email protected]

    or call 021 461 1118.

    AWARD:ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

    Sleewinsaward

    ELB VAN HEERDEN

    STELLENBOSCH architectural firm Slee

South African Institute of Architects (SAIA)

Awards of Merit ceremony, held last week as

part of their biennial convention in Cape

    Town.SleeandCoreceived theawardofmerit

for its 101 Dorp Gallery and Studio, now

known as the Slee Gallery, the only building

based in Stellenbosch to walk away with this

    prestigious honour.

The awards programme takes place over

two years. In the first year awards for

architecture are presented by the various re-

gional institutes affiliated to the SAIA. The

CorobrikSAIA Awards of Merit are be-

stowed in the second year, and thereafter the

    awards for excellence are announced.

The awards of merit encourage and recog-

nise good design or a significant contribution

    to the field of architecture.

An award for excellence is given only for

an exceptional achievement in the field of ar-

chitecture. Projects that have won an award

of merit are eligible for this award, and will

    be announced next year.

Placing a contemporary building in a his-

torical environment is a huge challenge, and

so it is a great honour to receive this national

award, says Johann Slee of Slee and Co.

With an award such as this, the South Afri-

can Institute of Architects recognises the ex-

cellence and success of a building.

    THEall-newVolvoV40 isnearing local

shores and due to the high amount of

    orderrequests,VolvoCarSouthAfrica

(VCSA) has decided to release the pri-

cing and line-upof its gorgeous, new fi-

    ve-door five-seat premium hatchback.

VCSA has had to break away from the

industry tradition of only releasing pri-

    cingandfinal line-upat launch.According

to Bram van der Reep, MD of Volvo Car

    South Africa, we

    couldnt have received a

    better indication of just

    how popular the Volvo

    V40 is going to be.

    It is such an exciting

vehicle for us and we are

    delighted that the public

    seems to be equally eager

for the arrival of the Vol-

    vo V40.

    After its international

    debut in June this year,

    theall-newVolvoV40was

    immediately heralded by

    many as the new bench-

    mark in the premium

    hatch segment.

In South Africa, Volvos new premium

hatch will be available for test drives at

    allVolvodealerships from15October, and

will go on sale from 15 November, but or-

    ders can be placed now.

Initially, Volvo will be launching with

    the all-new V40 in T3 manual, T4 manual,

    manualEssential andcontinue toR397 100

    for the V40 T5 Geartronic R-Design.

The all-new Volvo V40 is not the only

    Swede receiving attention at themoment.

VCSA is currently running various retail

    offersonsomeof itsmostpopularvehicles.

They are currently advertising Volvo de-

    alswithabiteplayingofftheirrecent,and

very appropriate, television ad showing a

    wolfandaVolvoS60growlingateachother

(naturally, the S60 intimidates the wolf).

    According to Marketing Director, Mi-

    chelleNaud, Volvos current retail cam-

    paign - andall our currentmarketingcam-

paigns for thatmatter - perfectly represent

what the Volvo brand is all about.

We are a human-centric, luxury brand

with a sense of humour and our products

just offer us so much opportunity to get

    creative.

Its a really exciting time to be a part

    of the Volvo brand.

Themost prominent of the offers are on

    theVolvoS60 (with aVolvoS60T3Manual

    forR3999 permonth) and theVolvoC30D2

Manual Essential for just R3 333 per

    month.

Or you can opt for a full R25 000 to help

you set up your perfect XC60 deal.

Playful yes but serious offers nonethe-

    less.

    Volvo encouragespotential buyers todo

their homework, compare the specs and

take a closer look at the styling of their po-

    tential purchases.

    And the real question is:

When last did you test drive a Volvo?

And if you havent done so recently, can

you be 100% sure that you aremaking the

    right choice?

    Road test: Hyundais new i20

    FRANS LE ROUX

    HYUNDAI is continuing its local

new model onslaught when the Ko-

    rean giant recently unveiled its

    new i20.

Following the success of not only

the previous i20, but most of their

models, the new car has a lot to live

    up to.

The old i20 joined us late 2009 and

was available with a 1,4 and 1.6 litre

    engine which produced 74kw/136nm

    and 91kw/156nm respectively.

The long list of standard features

and the good interior and boot space

were some of the reasons why buyers

    opted for the i20.

Standard features on the new model

    include rather beautiful 16-inch

wheels, 6 airbags, rear park assist, 6-

    speaker sound system, a 3 year/60 000

km service plan and Hyundais famous

    5 year/150 000 km warranty.

The new car continues where the

    previous generation left off.

Gone is the 1,6 and Hyundai opted

to keep their 1,4 as the only engine in

    the new car.

My test car was the 1.4 Glide manu-

    al which retails for a R176 900.

    Power stays the same at

73kw/136nm, but Hyundai fitted a new

6-speed manual gearbox to the i20.

    A six-speed gearbox on a 1,4 I hear

you say? Yes, in some ways this is

overkill. Fifth and six gears are purely

there to lower the fuel consumption

and have no urge or go-forward.

Great when you are on long open

highways, but not as fantastic when

you need to pass someone or get up

    any sort of hill.

    Hyundai claims 4,5 litres/100 km,

but in my test on various surfaces and

in changing conditions I achieved a

respectable figure of around 6,5 li-

tres/100 km. This adds up to a theoret-

ical tank range of around 600 km with

    the 45 litre tank.

Performance in the new i20 is noth-

ing to get excited about and Hyundai

claims 11,4 seconds for the 0-100 kph

    sprint.

Top speed is a daring 180 kph.

The engine is lifeless until you hit

4000 rpm and then it jumps into life

pulling strongly towards the 6 500 rpm

    red line.

On the interior side things are look-

ing up. A mixture of dark grey and

black plastics fill the cabin. Some pret-

ty silver inserts spread around the

cabin add to the youth/sporty image

    Hyundai is after.

A chrome gear-lever and door han-

dles further enhance the look when

you step inside. Blue and red are the

light-colours that shine at night from

    the instrument cluster.

All the switchgear and audio but-

tons are large and easy to use.

    The radio/cd/mp3 player is good

    quality and user-friendly. The sound

quality from the six speakers is rather

impressive and you can you use your

iPod and connect a USB device. Blue-

tooth is standard on both models too.

The one thing I rather liked was the

great supportive seats. Even the side

bolstering was great and it felt like a

    sport seat.

Headroom was not a problem, but

rear legroom might be cramped for

    larger passengers.

The boot size is 292 litres and has

enough space for the daily groceries

    or school run.

    DFSK Loadhopperwins Best

    Microvan of the Year Award

    CHINESE manufacturer DSFK

    kick-started the microvan mar-

ket in the UK with the introduc-

tion of its Loadhopper - the uni-

que vehicle has now won the

    first-ever Best Microvan of the

    Year award by the authoritative

    video-based website Van-

    sA2Z.com.

The category didnt exist last ye-

ar, but thanks to DSFK and their

    Swindon-based importer, DSFK UK

who started importing a light com-

mercial vehicle range at the end of

    2011, Loadhoppers impressive cre-

    dentials have been recognised in

    VansA2Zs Vans of the Year

    Awards 2012.

A DSFK range of five derivati-

    ves, including the 1,3-litre panel

van, was introduced in South Afri-

ca in March this year by importer

    and distributor Geely South Afri-

ca, and has met with instant de-

    mand.

The range also includes a single

and double cab mini-truck with 1,0

    or 1,3-litre engine and a 1,3-litre

mini bus. Prices range from R49

    990 to R76 990.

Demand for the DSFK has been

so good from our 34 dealers that

weve had to place additional or-

    ders, said Geely South Africas

    managing director Henri Meistre.

An additional 150 units will be ar-

riving every month for the next

    four months.

    VansA2Z.com comments: Mi-

    crovans and mini-trucks are not

everyones cup of tea, but they

are very suitable for urban opera-

    tions thanks to their diminutive

    proportions and very tight tur-

    ning circle.

    Being forward control in lay-

out - the engine resides under the

cab - there is no bonnet to get in

the way. They can squeeze into

    spaces other light commercials

can only dream of fitting into.

    Size, however, doesnt restrict

    their carrying ability. Payloads

range from 590 kg to 1 000 kg, the

van provides 3 square metres of

load space and comes with a sli-

    ding side door.

    * DFSK is the automotive divi-

sion of the Chongqing Sokon In-

dustry Group, a group that is res-

ponsible for the manufacture of a

    variety of automobile-related pro-

    ducts, including car engines, mo-

    torcycles and suspension mem-

    bers.

    A strategic alliance and joint

    venture with Chinas second lar-

    gest automotive manufacturer,

    the Dongfeng company (DFM) has

allowed DFSK to tap into DFMs

    joint ventures with well-known

    Japanese, Korean and French ma-

    nufacturers. DFSK also manufac-

tures a range of heavy commerci-

    al vehicles.

    Hyundais new i20 (continued)

    The ride and handling

    had some issues. The

    pretty 16-inch rims look

    better than they drive

    and when combining

    those with low profile

    rubber, the supposedly

    comfortableridegoesout

the door. I would opt for

    the 15-inchwheels on the

    1.4 Fluid model.

    The steering felt sharp

    and when pushing on you

    dontalwaysknowwhat the

    front wheels are doing.

    But lets face it, whoever

buys the i20 wont use it on

    theannual trackdayorcon-

    vert it into some pimped-

    out street racer.

    On the exterior Hyundai

    continues with the so-

    called fluidic-sculpture

design and now the i10, i20

    and i30 boast almost the

    same front end.

    I like the single black

    grille and those headlights

    look superb at night. This

i20 is a really good looking

car, but it is up against

    some stiff competition.

    There are quite a few

    good rivals in this category

    namely theVolkswagenPo-

    lo1.4,KiaRio1.4Tec,Toyota

    Yaris1.3Xi,SuzukiSwift 1.4

    GLS, Ford Fiesta 1.4 Ambi-

    ente and theOpel Corsa 1.4.
