About this DjVu to PDF tool

DjVu (pronounced “déjà vu”) was designed in the 1990s specifically for scanned documents: it compresses a scanned book page to a fraction of JPEG's size while keeping text crisp, which is why digital libraries, the Internet Archive and Eastern-European publishers hold enormous DjVu collections. The problem: almost no modern device opens DjVu natively.

Many DjVu files carry an embedded OCR text layer. This tool reads the file in your browser, extracts that text layer page by page, and builds a searchable PDF from it. For DjVu files without a text layer, it reports the document's structure (pages and shared components) so you know what you're dealing with — full image rendering of DjVu requires specialist software such as DjVuLibre on desktop.

How to use it

  1. Drop your .djvu (or .djv) file onto this page and press Convert.
  2. If the file has an embedded text layer, it's extracted and assembled.
  3. Download the resulting searchable PDF.

Frequently asked questions

Why are so many old books in DjVu format?
DjVu's compression was far better than PDF for scans in the dial-up era, so libraries adopted it heavily. The format faded as storage got cheap and PDF viewers became universal.
My converted PDF has text but no page images — why?
Your DjVu file's value here is its OCR text layer, which this in-browser tool extracts. Rendering DjVu's wavelet-compressed page images (IW44) needs a native decoder; for image-perfect output use the free desktop DjVuLibre tools, then your pages render exactly.
Can I open DjVu on a Kindle or phone?
Not natively. Converting the text layer to PDF with this tool is the quickest route to reading on modern devices.
Is the file uploaded to your server?
No — the DjVu file is parsed entirely in your browser.
