Please do not bring any snacks with nuts or peanuts to choir on Tuesdays, as one of our members is severely allergic. Just the smell of nuts/peanuts on your breath can quickly trigger a deadly anaphylactic reaction.  Thanks for helping make it possible for this member to join us at choir.

AN EXTRA SPECIAL NOTE

HONOURING ANDREW

Last season Andrew Kielbowicz reluctantly resigned for health reasons after 12 years as volunteer choir photographer.

He has been a professional photographer, and photography teacher, for many years and has a large body of excellent work, some of which can be seen on his web site. While his work for the choir is a small part of that body of work his documenting of 12 years’ worth of concerts has created a large number of choir photos.

In his early years as choir photographer he would post the photos from each concert on his site and I would post a link to them on our web site. Each concert collection would remain on his site for a year or two and then be rotated off in favour of more recent concert photos. As a result we have never had a complete collection of his choir work accessible to us from our site’s Choir Life: Choir Photos page. That is about to change!

As he was approaching his retirement he gifted his complete catalogue of GHC photos to the choir and I have been gradually posting them on our site. Time permitting I hope to have all of them posted and accessible from our Choir Life: Choir Photos page within the next few weeks. Each concert collection I post will be announced in the newsletter.

As the rest of this season progresses we will be honouring Andrew by continuing the series of Community Issue displays of his photos that we started last season. The first such display for this season can be found below.

'SONGLINES, MANTRA, AND RAGA ROADS: SINGING OURSELVES HOME'Hosted by Gina Salá and Paul Henderson

Retreat June 6 - 11, 2014

Take a refreshing trek along ancient raga roads and wild yak trails of sound. Experience the power of sound tantra, opening your energy system to greater freedom and illumination. Enjoy all of this in the inspiring beauty and with the delicious, healthy meals of BC's Hollyhock Retreat Center on Cortes Island.

Explore the vast spaciousness of the "notes between the notes of Indian raga singing, where time expands and we distinctly feel the exquisite beauty of all the emotions and relationships in the music, and therefore in our lives.

Rejuvenate and cleanse in the cave of mantra- with Gina's precise guidance in mantra pronunciation (and mouth positions) and memorable stories. These enable us to rest deeper in remembrance of Who we are. Creativity flows naturally, the voices, bodies, heart and mind relax. Learn liberating vocal techniques and dance in a caravan of vocal jams, connected to the natural world.

Gain the tools and support to discover your own heart (medicine) songs that are healing to ourselves and our community. Deep roots and belly-laughs abound. All welcome-no experience required.

WORD OF MOUTHFor supporting and celebrating 'others' whose businesses / actions / way of being / kind words - whatever! - have helped you, us and/or our world grow, come alive and/or prosper. MEET THE ‘HUGGING SAINT’

Amma, affectionately called the ‘hugging saint’, visits cities all over the world to embrace all who come to meet her.  Her closest visit to us is Seattle. This year she will be there May 23-26th.

Amma has received many awards over the years for her countless humanitarian projects. Amma says her religion is love. People of many faiths have enjoyed her embrace. For me, meeting Amma was a confirmation that there is such a thing as pure love in this world.

For more information, visit http://amma.org/news/ammas-2014-north-american-summer-tour Feel free to email me at [email protected] if you have questions.

COMMUNITY NETWORKINGCYCLE OF HOPE FOR ALS 2014

I am honoured to be riding with the Cycle of Hope again in August.  Our aim is to raise $50,000 for ALS - half of it will go to ALS BC for an electric wheelchair - the other half will go to ALS Canada for research.

Our fundraising efforts will include bottle drives during June and July, selling Level Ground Coffee and the awesome Oodles of Noodles dinner/dance for the second year running. This was such an amazing event last year.

Page 6: CREATE & POST PDF VERSION BEFORE SENDING€¦  · Web view

Save those bottles!!! I will be asking for coffee orders during choir and can collect bottles on a Monday night.  We start training in March 3 days a week - Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. So I won't be able to time travel.

If you have any bottles or want to order coffee or are interested in attending the Oodles of Noodles dinner/dance please email me at:

DOG TEAM TO DAWSON

Page 9: CREATE & POST PDF VERSION BEFORE SENDING€¦  · Web view

I've written another book, Dog Team to Dawson: A Quest for the Cosmic Bannock and other Yukon stories. I'll bring copies to the choir over the next few weeks. Regular retail price is $19.77. Choir members can buy for $15.00, with $5.00 of that going to the concert Scholarship Fund.

From the book’s cover:

"Dog Team to Dawson is a nostalgic collection of true Yukon stories written by bestselling author Bruce Batchelor. This book is the prequel to Bruce's Nine Dog Winter, providing readers of that classic account with earlier adventures into the heart and soul of the Yukon Territory."

I’m usually at choir on Tuesdays and sometimes on Thursdays and I might make it out for a Monday session.

Anyone in our choir community who won’t, or might not, be able to connect with me at choir is welcome to contact me to make alternate arrangements by emailing [email protected] or calling 250-380-0998.

A day with David Whyte! Through poetry and the insights of poetry - looking at the fruitful discipline of first finding, then asking, ever keener and more beautiful questions; questions that do not produce easy answers, but which help us to re-imagine ourselves, our world and our part in it, and most especially, questions which work to reshape our identities, helping us to become larger, more generous, more courageous; equal to the increasingly fierce invitations extended to us as we grow and mature.

JUST FOR FUNA reward of laughter for reading this far

THE SQUEEZER  Submitted by Bill Hanson from a cyber-forward received from Victoria musician Graeme Card

The local bar was so sure that its bartender was the strongest man around that they offered a standing $1000 bet. The bartender would squeeze a lemon until all the juice ran into a glass, and hand the lemon to a patron. Anyone who could squeeze one more drop of juice out of the lemon would win the money. Many people had tried over time: weightlifters, longshoremen, etc., but nobody could do it. One day this scrawny little fellow came into the bar, wearing thick glasses and a polyester suit, and said in a small voice, " I'd like to try the bet."  After the laughter died down, the bartender said "OK "and grabbed the lemon, squeezing it dry. Then he handed the shrivelled remains to the little fellow. But the crowd's laughter turned to total silence as the man clenched his little fist around the lemon.... and six drops fell into the glass. As the crowd cheered, the bartender paid the $1000, and asked the little man: "What do you do for a living? Are you a lumberjack, a weight-lifter, or what? "The little fellow quietly replied: "I work for Canada Revenue Agency."

(It seemed appropriate for the end of April but perhaps not as funny as it might be some other time of the year)
