PRACTICE CD INFO UPDATE

For those of you who missed my earlier invitations to submit an order for a practice CD please note that I intend to be distributing them next week. If you want one please place your order now.

For those of you who have ordered please be sure to pick up your CD’s next week or have a choir friend do it for you. If you can’t do that then contact me to make alternate arrangements so that I can get them all distributed quickly.

BILL HUOT'S CHRISTMAS AND YULETIDE MUSIC SAMPERS

Bill will be selling his annual compilations again at every GHC practice from December 9 to 20.

He is a Christmas music folklorist. These are compilation CDs with detailed interpretive liner notes focused on various seasonal themes.  Some feature songs about the birth of Jesus, the angels, shepherds etc.  Others celebrate the Winter Solstice, and some have songs related to the secular celebration of the holidays. See descriptions here.  This year's new sampler is a children’s-album-for-grownups a musical Christmas stocking filled with toys and goodies.

Each 78 minute (or longer) CD features a wide variety of performers and styles of music, carefully selected and organized to reward active listening. The musical selections are drawn from Bill’s extensive collection of recordings (many of which are out-of-print).

He requests a donation of $15 each $5 for people on low income. ALL of the proceeds are donated to the Power of Hope and to the Vancouver Island Marmot Recovery Foundation.

A belated Editor’s Note

Since this newsletter was posted Bill Huot has submitted an item about his Music Sampler CDs for this coming Friday’s Admin Issue that includes two free sample files from this season’s Music Sampler. I decided “Why wait, do it now” so here are the links to them:

GIFT CARDS FOR SALE at GHC and HNC until the Christmas break.

Caia Connection and Power of Hope Gift Cards will be available from now until the week of Dec 16.

If you don't know about these cards -  they are a really convenient and meaningful way to give a gift to someone for the upcoming season.   Convenient,  because they are easy to pop in the mail,  or give by hand - and meaningful because they help support the two organizations that the choir raises money for through our concerts each year.

The cards are $10 each and receipts are available for purchases over $20.

On the back of the cards there is a message saying that  "A donation has been made in your name in support of:

a)  the Kuwangisana Education program in Mozambique,  or b)  The Power of Hope programs to help out youth.

Additional information about the organization -  programs,  website address,  etc. is also provided.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Gloria Hansen,  Tenor -  GHC admin. and HNC registrar

EDITOR’S NOTES & REMINDERSACCESSING THE NEWSLETTER

A High Noon Choir member told me recently that she has trouble navigating to the newsletter on our web site and that other HNC members that she has talked to say the same thing. I suspect, therefore, that there are other HNC and GHC members that are experiencing similar difficulties but haven’t said anything. So….

First

I strongly recommend that you all keep the current week’s Newsletter Announcement email where you can find it easily (at least until you receive the next week’s email). That way you can completely avoid having to navigate the site by simply opening the current email and clicking one of the links in it.

The PDF and Word links each open a version the current newsletter without you having to go to our web site at all.

The link below them opens the Newsletters page without you having to navigate the site. Once there you have access to the current newsletter via the PDF and Word links at the top of the page as well as many archived issues by scrolling down the page to the appropriate links.

Second

If you want, or need, to get to the newsletters page by navigating to it on the web site take the following steps:

1. On any page of our site click on the “Choir Life” button (top menu far right)2. Click on “Newsletters” (left sidebar menu 1/3 of the way down)3. Click on either the PDF or Word link at the top of the page to open the current newsletter or scroll down to the

appropriate link for a desired archived issue.

Third

If the above information is helpful I suggest you keep a copy of it handy (printed it or filed) so that it the next time you want to access the newsletter you don’t have to remember it.

MANY THANKS…

…to all who came out and supported the African jewelry sale at choir last week! ********************************************A HUGE THANK YOU TO HNC AND GHC CHOIRS FROM THE GUATEMALA SCARVES FOR STOVES PROJECT:

We are delighted to tell you that the choirs’ responses once again to our scarf sales for our SCARVES FOR STOVES project has been wonderful.

We raised $4,083 selling scarves and from donations, at HNC choir and at all 3 GHC nights, and the donations are still coming in via the Innovative Communities Foundation website, (see blog below).

It is truly heartwarming how the choir has embraced this project over the years and enabled us to go on making a huge difference in the lives of the Mayan villagers, where we volunteer.

With hearfelt gratitude from us and all the villagers you help, and also a big thank you to all of you who help us to put these sales on at choir  Check out our Guatemala project blog at: http://www.icoatitlan.blogspot.com

PAST or DISTANT VOICESVISITING “ALLEZ CHANTE” IN MONTREAL

When I go to Montreal, visiting family and friends, I like to go to Centre St-Barthélémy. Why? To sing and join the choir: Allez Chante!

The choir, led by Evemarie Brunelle (CCLT5 - 2008/09), is a Montreal based extension of GHC Victoria. Allez Chante Choir started 4 years ago having one practice per week. Her approach is inclusive and very dedicated to her choir singers. This fall she opened a third evening to form a new group.

Surprisingly, it was my sister France who introduced me to the choir and without knowing that Evemarie was trained by Shavon and Denis. Les Chorales Allez Chante have a repertoire tailored to the community, in a spirit of sharing and healing  approach, and steeped in the tradition of our choir GHC. During 90 min. as a solo leader Evemarie direct the group three evenings a week.

So here is the directory for this fall session of the Allez Chante Choir !

If you want to know more about Allez Chante Choir visit her web site at: http://www.allezchante.ca * Not a surprise, as in Victoria male singers tend to be fewer.

********************************************GHC SWAT - THE 12 DAYS OF CHOIRS

This is a wonderful opportunity to sing in this fabulous acoustic space. We thoroughly enjoyed it last year, and are happy to be invited back again!

********************************************CHRISTMAS DAY SWAT:

Many of us participated in the SWAT on Christmas Day last year in support of the annual Christmas Spirit Dinner at Glad Tidings Church, Quadra St. at North Park. The organizers and have asked us to sing again. There are two sittings:

First sitting: arrive to warm up at 11:15; we sing from about 11:30 - 1:00 approximatelySecond sitting: arrive to warm up at 2:15; we sing from about 2:30 – 4:00 approximately

We'll sing a combination of GHC standards (warm-up songs, various rounds, etc) and well-known Christmas songs and carols for which I will have song sheets available. It's very (cheerfully) noisy and informal and we are mostly background so don't be put off by thinking that you don't know everything.

If you are willing and available for either or both of the sittings, please:

EMAIL ME AND TELL ME YOUR NAME, SECTION, AND WHICH (OR BOTH) SITTING YOU WILL BE ATTENDING. My email is [email protected]

********************************************HOME SECTIONAL SCHEDULE:

Jan. 8th ~ Basses @ Bills

I am hosting a home sectional for all Basses on Jan 8th from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.  and the more of us there are the better it will be. Especially since Denis plans to be there to put us through our paces.

Beverages of choice and snacks to share are welcome. The practice will be followed by a social gathering for those feeling social.

WORD OF MOUTH / RECOMMENDATIONS

BEAUTIFUL VERSIONS OF WE ARE AND WAVES OF LOVE On his most recent release, Ravi Ji, a multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer, delivers gently hypnotic renditions of 2 works were currently practising at HNC.  Both are about 8 minutes long, and feature lovely harmonies and a delightful tapestry of instrumentation.  While these are not choral versions of the songs, they are, nevertheless, well worth a listen. To listen to these songs, and indeed, the entirety of Ravis latest release:https://soundcloud.com/koratone/sets/songs-for-the-golden-age Recommended by:  Alex Armstrong, HNC

********************************************CARING

Several of us in the choir have been moved by this video of how we can connect through music and touch to those who no longer talk.  Gladys Wilson and Naomi Feil - YouTube  Recommended by Celia Cheatley GHC Monday Alto

********************************************SIMPLE GIFTS ~ SOUNDINGS IN CONCERT

Once more for emphasis…

For those of you who have never been to a Soundings concert I say…”Do your ears the favour of being there for either their Dec. 7th or 8th concert. Ears like surprises but if you need an advance listen before committing yourself you can check them out on YouTube.

Those of you who have been to past Soundings concerts need no urging from me but consider yourself reminded anyway.

Recommended highly by Bill Hanson GHC Bass etc. (and Soundings Fan)

********************************************UNIQUE GIFT BASKET AND STOCKING STUFFER ITEMS

As many of you know I am a fan of Blair Mart, that great source of Mediterranean, Middle East and Near East food items. Matt, the mild mannered super hero owner, is importing a range of unique gift items for the Christmas season. Check it out as a source of gifts stocking stuffers and scrumptious gift basket contents.

Yummmm…

BOBBY MCFERRIN ON IMPROVISATION

I am a great fan of Bobby McFerrin and just found his master class on improvisation video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AIIVoVRx1tA&feature=em-subs_digest-vrecs

Wonderful.

Submitted by Mary Wynne Ashford GHC Monday/Thursday Alto & CCLT9 2012

Editor’s NoteAs another dedicated Bobby McFerrin fan I checked out the above link as soon as it arrived in my in-box and, no surprise, it’s excellent. When I finished watching it, however, I struck gold. There was a link next to that video to a series of 49 videos of his talks and demonstrations of vocal improvisation. Once I get this newsletter finished and on its way I’ll definitely start enjoying my way through all 49!
