EDITOR’S NOTES & REMINDERSRE-SUBMITTING ITEMS TO THE COMMUNITY ISSUE

If you wish to re-submit an item of yours that has appeared already in a previous Choir Community Issue please copy it from that issue and paste it into an email rather than pulling your original version from your files. Using the version that was already in the newsletter will retain any formatting changes I have made to it so that I don’t have to re-do them.

Once you have it in the email you can edit/update it as needed before you send it to me.

Technologically hesitant computer users please note:

If you want/need to upgrade your basic "Select, Copy, Cut & Paste" computer skills (Windows or Mac) just click on:

It’s easier than you think

If I have made any format changes to your submission please notice what they are and then try to incorporate them in your future submissions.

Sometimes the changes are simply for visual consistency or clarity but most often the reasons for the changes rest in the word limits, format standards and policies described on the “Using Our Newsletter” page of our web site at:

http://www.gettinhigherchoir.ca/choir_life/newsletterinfo.php#guides

Submissions that don’t require me to make any changes save time in preparing the newsletter for distribution and are a gift that is always greatly appreciated.

Opportunities to sing'TAKING THE LEAD' VOCAL WORKSHOP WITH OLIVER SWAIN (Apr 5)

Hosted by the Victoria Bluegrass Association.

Great singers of all genres seem to know just the right time in a song to hit that high note, hushed tone or throw in the perfect ornament. Oliver will explore ways of treating every song and performance individually to draw out the meaning and find the opportunities to strut your stuff. Basic ornaments and technique, following the narrative, pitch stability and discovering your voice will all be covered in this workshop.

THE SPONTANEOUS VOICE – VANCOUVER (Apr 12 - 13)Presented by: Laurel Murphy (CCLT9 – 2012)

When you put down the sheet music or disregard the rehearsed song, what is left?

Singers take a leap of faith. Open your ears, heart, mouth, and soul in order to fly free, trusting your powers of intention, invention, and improvisation. Is this something any one can do? Vocalist and teacher Laurel Murphy says, “YES!”

CYCLE OF HOPE FOR ALS 2014

I am honoured to be riding with the Cycle of Hope again in August.  Our aim is to raise $50,000 for ALS - half of it will go to ALS BC for an electric wheelchair - the other half will go to ALS Canada for research.

Our fundraising efforts will include bottle drives during June and July, selling Level Ground Coffee and the awesome Oodles of Noodles dinner/dance for the second year running. This was such an amazing event last year.

Save those bottles!!! I will be asking for coffee orders during choir and can collect bottles on a Monday night.  We start training in March 3 days a week - Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. So I won't be able to time travel.

If you have any bottles or want to order coffee or are interested in attending the Oodles of Noodles dinner/dance please email me at:

THE SECRET LIFE OF POEMS (Mar 29 & 30)at Royal Roads University Presented by Denis Donnelly

Over two days, I will guide you to deepen your own dialogue with the ancient and honoured poetic tradition. We will explore the ways that poetry works both on the page and within us, and how it can enlighten and enliven our own passages. Our focus will be mainly on poems that are inspired by the natural world.

By considering such aspects of poetry as image, sound, form, syntax and allusion, we will seek to broaden into a tradition that, at its heart, carries the wisdom of humanity.

Length: 2 days – March 29 and 30Time: Sat 9:30am – 4:30pm & Sun 9:30am – 3pm Cost: $145 + applicable taxes. Registration is limited so please book early. Best to Register by: Sat, Apr 12, 2014   http://cstudies.royalroads.ca/courses/TAET3346-Y13.htm

Oliver will explore ways of treating every song and performance individually to draw out the meaning and find the opportunities to strut your stuff. Basic ornaments and technique, following the narrative, pitch stability and discovering your voice will all be covered in this workshop.

A RETIREE'S LAST TRIP TO WAL-MART

Submitted by Bill Hanson GHC Bass etc.

Yesterday I was at my local Wal-Mart buying a large bag of Purina dog chow for my loyal pet, Jake, the Wonder Dog and was in the check-out line when a woman behind me asked if I had a dog. What did she think I had an elephant?

So because I'm retired and have little to do, on impulse I told her that no, I didn't have a dog, I was starting the Purina Diet again. I added that I probably shouldn't, because I ended up in the hospital last time, but that I'd lost 50 pounds before I awakened in an intensive care ward with tubes coming out of most of my orifices and IVs in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a Perfect Diet and that the way that it works is, to load your pants pockets with Purina Nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry. The food is nutritionally complete so it works well and I was going to try it again. (I have to mention here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story.)

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care, because the dog food poisoned me. I told her no, I stopped to pee on a Fire Hydrant and a car hit me.

I thought the guy behind her was going to have a heart attack he was Laughing so hard.Wal-Mart won't let me shop there anymore.
