CONCERT THOUGHTS, FEELINGS AND/OR STORIES TO SHARE?

Whether you were in the audience or on stage for our June 13 & 14 concerts please take a few minutes to share your thoughts, feelings and stories about them by adding a comment on our web site or by posting them on the GHC Facebook page or better yet…both!

We also invite you to scroll through the site’s Past Concerts listings and check out some of the comments for them. If you experience a memory about one or more past concert that you would like to share add a comment. It is never too late.

ADMIN TEAM NOTESSHIVON

Dear Gettin' Higher and High Noon Choirs, and Soundings

I am still vibrating from the high energy of the past few weeks, as we brought our seasons to a close,  with the GHC concerts last weekend, and HNC's singing open house yesterday, and the Soundings concerts a few weeks ago   It's just as well we have a break now for a few months, or I just might achieve "lift off" and never be seen again!

I am filled with gratitude and wonder for the field of loving harmonious vibration we are all creating together.  Singing together seems such a basic, ordinary kind of thing to do. And yet, it is at the same time quite extraordinary.  It asks that

we show up again and again, be present, listen, subdue our individual egos, and enter into a holy whole, to create something beautiful. When we do all that, the music gets really sweet,  hearts open, tears flow, laughter rings out, and we all feel blessed.  My heartfelt thanks to all of you who take part in this amazing ritual.

~ Shivon

DENIS

Well, what an amazing couple of concerts! I know that we say that concerts are not the objective of what we do - that meeting and singing together week to week is what we are really about - but nonetheless concerts can be a lot of fun! My heartfelt thanks to you all for your work and dedication in putting the final touches on all of our music. That we did well was attested to by the reaction of the audience, which I think we can agree was, to put it mildly, enthusiastic! And, to the approximately 1/3 of this season's registrants who chose not to sing in the concert - that's OK! I hope you enjoyed it from the audience.

~ Denis

GLORIA

I’m still feeling the joy from the week-end concerts. Wasn’t Shari the loveliest guest. She really reaches out to the audience and is so appreciative of the choir… hard not to love her.

SPECIAL THANKSTo all the volunteers who helped with the concerts details:

Jo Volek - who stuffed all the programs and was there almost every choir night to help with ticket sales Tom Ovanin and Jack Haas - front door (HNC members) Susan Helgason and Cindy Phillips - CD sales table (HNC members)

THE BOTTOM LINE - Although I haven’t completed a few final details of the accounts for the concerts - we raised over $23,000 for The Caia Connection. The choir raised just over $11,000 in Scholarships - thanks so much for your generosity.

~ Gloria

BILL

As we approached the concerts I was really looking forward to them and looking forward to the end of the season for some rest. Now that I have had a couple of relatively restful days I am wishing the season wasn’t over. Since it is I am now also looking forward eagerly to the Fall season.

It’s been fun. See y’all at the SWAT on Saturday and at the “all batters can hit” softball game and potluck picnic on Sunday. Two more opportunities to sing together…how great is that!

~ Bill

MALI SWAT (Sep 26 27)

Please mark on your calendar a SWAT event on Friday Saturday evening, September 26 27 at the Fairfield United Church Hall.

It will be part of a Fall Equinox fundraising event to help with our project, Instruments4africa, based in Mali. It will be a fun evening that will include the SWAT, a dance with African music, food and a silent auction. Your participation would be greatly appreciated.

More details in the newsletter and at choir practice in September. Thank you!

In the meantime check out our Instruments4africa June newsletter. The great news for us is that Mali is now reopened, at least the southern part where our project is located. We are planning to go back in November and December.

SUMMER DROP-IN SESSIONS (Corrected re: the evening we sing)

Everyone Welcome!

Once again Gloria will lead her popular summer drop-in singing sessions at the Church of Truth.

We will meet every Wednesday Tuesday evening from August 6th through and including August 27 at the Church of Truth. (it was already booked for Tuesdays the previous booking was cancelled)

Cost - $6 per session (Three Toonies for Tunes on Tuesdays).

This is a time when we can just sing without any particular musical destination in mind. Feel free to invite friends and neighbours this is a great way for people to check out the feel of the choir, or just experience the fun of an evening of singing.

We can try new things, revive old songs, and whatever else appeals to us.

Fun!

If you have any “more of this,” “less of that,” “try this” or any other form of feedback that can help us make the GHC experience better for you, and for us all, please pass it on us.

APPRECIATIONSA TRIBUTE TO DEBORAH MILLAR

I am writing my next book, actually 2 are in the works. One is called, A Book of Letters...if you only knewAs the title suggests, it is about letters that I am writing about people who have had a profound meaning in my life.   I have written one to Deborah Millar and as so many people in the choir knew her I would like to share it with them.  It's on my blog. http://junieswadron.com/2014/06/a-tribute-to-deborah-millar/

Editor’s note:Deborah was an extraordinarily gifted choir coach who worked with the GHC and Soundings for a number of years prior to her death a couple of days after the GHC’s June 2012 concerts.

FLASH MOBSIDNEY DAYS PARADE (Jul 1)

All singers are invited to join in this Canada Day event:

The event will happen at 11:00am on Beacon Avenue at the corner of 5th and Beacon (the Parade will start at 11:30 this year).  There will be a rehearsal at the Mary Winspear Centre from 4-5 pm on Thursday, June 12, with a second rehearsal on Tuesday, June 24 from 7-8 pm.  It is OK go to just one if you can’t make both. The song being performed is "Happy" (Pharrell Williams’ YouTube version).

The group performing will consist of both singers and dancers but, of course, likely some of the singers will also want to dance, while some of the (primarily) dancers may want to sing as well.  Some simple choreography is being prepared and whomever wishes to do so will be given the chance to learn it at the rehearsal(s).  They emphasize that learning the dance movements is not obligatory.  The music will be live and provided by the band that plays at the Rumrunner - I'm told they are quite good.

The basic "Flash Mob" idea is that the rehearsed group will run through the song (about 4 minutes) and then they will invite everyone around to join in during a second performance.  Of course, if what has happened in the past occurs, many of the crowd assembled for the Parade may start joining in the first time around!

In any case, it sounds like a fun experience with not too much pre-learning or preparation involved.

It's not necessary for people to let me know if they'll be joining in (although that would be nice) - they just need to turn up at the MWC on June 12 at 7:00pm.   Oh - and on the day, they should just wear something red or/and white - t-shirt, long-johns, whatever.

JAYME STONE ~ BEFORE THIS TIME ANOTHER YEAR

Jayme Stone was at Butchart two years ago and was a big hit.  I've been following his group ever since, hoping for a return to Victoria.

He's involved now in a recording project called the Lomax Project, freshening up some old songs recorded by Alan Lomax years ago.

They are trying to raise $$ for the project through Kickstarter (I've made a pledge).

Have a listen to this great spiritual (Before This Time Another Year) featuring Tim O'Brien which is part of the project...and hopefully will make it to a CD one of these days!!

MARTTIN HURKENS ~ YOU RAISE ME UP

This is so lovely that i had to send it in.  I for one would sing this piece. Love it!

What is wonderful about this is that people will walk past an older person as though they don’t exist, and I am sure that many of you, as have I, have had that happen countless  times.  I think that in the eyes of the young, we become invisible as we age, especially in these days of  all absorbing portable technology that so entrances the young !  This older gentleman made them stop and pay attention; and they did!

This year’s event will include a walk with refugees for a stronger Canada. The walk will lead to different stations around the downtown core, where people can take part in interactive activities that educate them about, and ask them to reflect on, refugee issues. The walk will begin and end at the Greater Victoria Public Library downtown branch on Broughton Street. Some rules for choral singing

Submitted by Loretta Benoit GHC Tuesday Soprano .

1. Everyone should sing the same piece.

2. Do not worry if you do not have perfect pitch - you may find singing less stressful without it.

3. The right note at the wrong time is the wrong note.

4. The wrong note at the right time is still a wrong note.

5. A wrong note sung timidly is still a wrong note.

6. A wrong note sung with authority is an interpretation.

7. When not one note of the original remains, a true interpretation has been realized.

8. If you happen to sing a wrong note, glare at one of your neighbours.

9. If everyone gets lost except you, follow those who get lost.

10. If you are completely lost, stop everyone and start an argument about repeat marks.

11. Strive to achieve the maximum notes per second - that way you do at least gain the admiration of the totally incompetent.

12. If a passage is difficult, slow it down.  If it is easy, speed it up - everything will work itself out in the end.

13. Markings for slurs, dynamics, ornaments, breathing, and so on should be totally ignored.  They are only there to embellish the score.

15. When everyone else has finished singing, you should not sing any notes you may still have left.
