ADMIN TEAM NOTESSHIVON

I am still floating from the wonderful weekend of singing and celebration!

To all of you who sang in our concerts, I must say, Bravo!   Your attention, focus, and presence were extraordinary, not to mention your dedication in the weeks and months leading up to the big show, learning all the music. The funds we raised - our most successful PoH fundraiser ever - will make a huge difference in many kids lives, a difference that will ripple out into the larger community in countless ways. The songs are yours to keep, in your hearts,  for the rest of your life. May they always be there for you when you need a little boost of inspiration or hope.

To all of you who came to the show, to enjoy it from the audience perspective - Thank you!  I love seeing so many familiar faces from choir seasons past in the audience - it reminds me of the beautiful big harmonious vocal community we are growing.  We love to receive your feedback and comments - feel free to add more, on the CONCERTS page of our website.

And a huge thanks to Bill,& Gloria, to Barb McLintock (PR) , and all of  you  poster-putter-uppers, ticket & CD sellers, crowd herders, etc.  who worked together seamlessly to make the shows so successful. As singers, audience, and volunteers - we can all feel really good about pulling off two great events!

~ Shivon

DENIS

My heartfelt thanks to you all for your dedication, your voices, and your heart in these concerts. They were truly amazing. I am left with a palpable sense of gratitude that we are able to move ourselves and our audiences so profoundly with the songs that we sing, and with the messages that they carry. It is a gift to work with you all.

Now we are starting to gather repertoire for the coming session, and I am very much looking forward to working with Shari Ulrich again - what an amazing presence Shari is in our Canadian music landscape!

I hope that I will see most of you back again in the singing circle starting the week of Feb.24.

~ Denis

GLORIA

Wow! What an amazing team effort. I would like to thank everyone who made these concerts such a success. Thanks to all that Shivon listed in the many, many categories in her notes, I’d also like to thank the following individuals: Tom Ovanin, Mike Graham, Trina MacDonald, Susan Albion, Janetta Ozard, for handling the CD sales and Front Door. And of course, our wonderful musicians, Oliver Swain, Richard Moody, Quinn Bachand, Glenna Garramone, Katree Weick and Chris Fretwell.

And…the bottom line - taking into consideration all the fundraising efforts - i.e. the ticket sales, individual choir member donations from both the Gettin’ Higher Choir and the High Noon Choir members, percentage of CD and Book sales, we cleared over $18,000 for The Power of Hope.

Many thanks

~ Gloria

THE SPONTANEOUS VOICE - VANCOUVERPresented by: Laurel Murphy (CCLT9 – 2012)

When you put down the sheet music or disregard the rehearsed song, what is left?

Singers take a leap of faith. Open your ears, heart, mouth, and soul in order to fly free, trusting your powers of intention, invention, and improvisation. Is this something any one can do? Vocalist and teacher Laurel Murphy says, “YES!”

Community NetworkingCYCLE OF HOPE FOR ALS 2014

I am honoured to be riding with the Cycle of Hope again in August.  Our aim is to raise $50,000 for ALS - half of it will go to ALS BC for an electric wheelchair - the other half will go to ALS Canada for research.

Our fundraising efforts will include bottle drives during June and July, selling Level Ground Coffee and the awesome Oodles of Noodles dinner/dance for the second year running. This was such an amazing event last year.

Save those bottles!!! I will be asking for coffee orders during choir and can collect bottles on a Monday night.  We start training in March 3 days a week - Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. So I won't be able to time travel.

If you have any bottles or want to order coffee or are interested in attending the Oodles of Noodles dinner/dance please email me at:

Using examples from selected times and places, including Chinese, Anglo-Saxon, Medieval, the Renaissance, the European Romantics, and poetry from indigenous peoples, we will explore some of the currents in these traditions. THE SECRET LIFE OF POEMS (Mar 29 & 30)at Royal Roads University Presented by Denis Donnelly

Over two days, I will guide you to deepen your own dialogue with the ancient and honoured poetic tradition. We will explore the ways that poetry works both on the page and within us, and how it can enlighten and enliven our own passages. Our focus will be mainly on poems that are inspired by the natural world.

By considering such aspects of poetry as image, sound, form, syntax and allusion, we will seek to broaden into a tradition that, at its heart, carries the wisdom of humanity.

Length: 2 days – March 29 and 30Time: Sat 9:30am – 4:30pm & Sun 9:30am – 3pm Cost: $145 + applicable taxes. Registration is limited so please book early. Best to Register by: Sat, Apr 12, 2014   http://cstudies.royalroads.ca/courses/TAET3346-Y13.htm

SINGING FROG

Submitted by Bill Hanson GHC Bass etc. (found on http://www.jokesgalore.com)

A mangy looking guy who goes into a bar and orders a drink. The bartender says: "No way. I don't think you can pay for it."

The guy says, "You're right. I don't have any money, but if I show you something you haven't seen before, will you give me a drink?"

The bartender says, "Only if what you show me ain't risque."

"Deal!" says the guy and reaches into his coat pocket and pulls out a hamster. He puts the hamster on the bar and it runs to the end of bar, down the bar, across the room, up the piano, jumps on the key board and starts playing Gershwin

songs. And the hamster is really good.

The bartender says, "You're right. I've never seen anything like that before. That hamster is truly good on the piano." The guy downs the drink and asks the bartender for another.

"Money or another miracle else no drink", says the bartender. The guy reaches into his coat again and pulls out a frog. He puts the frog on the bar, and the frog starts to sing. He has a marvelous voice and great pitch. A fine singer. A stranger from the other end of the bar runs over to the guy and offers him $300 for the frog.

The guy says "It's a deal." He takes the three hundred and gives the stranger the frog. The stranger runs out of the bar. The bartender says to the guy "Are you some kind of nut? You sold a singing frog for $300? It must have been worth millions. You must be crazy."

"Not so", says the guy. "The hamster is also a ventriloquist."
