AN EXTRA SPECIAL NOTE ~ BREAKING NEWS!

DEFEND OUR CLIMATE - MARCH FOR AN OIL FREE COAST   A Day of Action, tomorrow, Saturday May 10

A rally to Defend our Climate, starting at 12:30 with live music onstage at the Bandshell in Beacon Hill Park.

Singer Phil Vernon from Salt Spring has written new lyrics to the great Canadian anthem Northwest Passage. Renamed "Boundary Passage", the new version about stopping the tankers has been approved by Stan Rogers' widow, and is very moving. If you would like to learn the chorus, listen to the MP3 link below, print out the sheet music, and show up at the bandshell at noon tomorrow (Saturday) for a run through. I'll be there, singing alto.

More info on the event:

~ Shivon

4 part sheet music for the new chorus(note the harmonies are different than Denis’ choir arrangement)

An MP3 of the chorus(all 4 parts together)

The new lyrics in full(for context)

WORD OF MOUTHFor supporting and celebrating 'others' whose businesses / actions / way of being / kind words - whatever! - have helped you, us and/or our world grow, come alive and/or prosper.

A WONDERFUL NATIONAL MENTAL HEALTH AWARENESS WEEK MUSICAL PROJECT

May 5th to 11th is National Mental Health Awareness Week, and Soundings bass Clive Wright has been personally touched by the tragedy of mental illness. He has composed and put together a musical project documenting the journey that he and his daughter have gone through.

Perhaps you could take a moment to reflect on this week’s importance and visit this project that Clive feels so passionate about on its web site (Click on the rose image for lyrics) and Facebook page. Please forward this item to others who might benefit from the insights into this powerful and sometimes tragic condition.

Clive says: I am so grateful for the words of support and encouragement that so many of you have afforded me over the development of this ambitious project. Please be sure to contact me with your thoughts at [email protected].

COMMUNITY NETWORKINGINDIGENOUS YOUTH SCHOLARSHIP FUND We are seeking funds to support indigenous youth participation at the Unis'tot'en camp in northern B.C.  The camp is blocking entry to oil/gas pipelines development. Participants learn first-hand about Wet'suwet'en traditional culture and community-building skills that have been developed through resistance to industrial exploitation.  Our vision is that the youth return home empowered with new skills, knowledge and strengthened sense of purpose to benefit their own community's cultural renewal. Information and online donation at www.wildcoast.ca/sponsoror mail to VIC Forest Action Network c/o UBP Law816-1175 Douglas StVictoria BC V8W 2E1(On Memo line - Indigenous Youth Sponsorship) Submitted by Helen Durie HNC Soprano

CYCLE OF HOPE FOR ALS 2014

I am honoured to be riding with the Cycle of Hope again in August.  Our aim is to raise $50,000 for ALS - half of it will go to ALS BC for an electric wheelchair - the other half will go to ALS Canada for research.

Our fundraising efforts will include bottle drives during June and July, selling Level Ground Coffee and the awesome Oodles of Noodles dinner/dance for the second year running. This was such an amazing event last year.

Save those bottles!!! I will be asking for coffee orders during choir and can collect bottles on a Monday night.  We start training in March 3 days a week - Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. So I won't be able to time travel.

If you have any bottles or want to order coffee or are interested in attending the Oodles of Noodles dinner/dance please email me at:

[email protected]

CONCERT BENEFICIARY DONATION OFFERS Any individual, business or organization willing to offer donations to our next concert beneficiary is welcome to submit an item (max 150 words) describing what they offer and the terms that need to be met for them to make a donation.

DOG TEAM TO DAWSON

I've written another book, Dog Team to Dawson: A Quest for the Cosmic Bannock and other Yukon stories. I'll bring copies to the choir over the next few weeks. Regular retail price is $19.77. Choir members can buy for $15.00, with $5.00 of that going to the concert Scholarship Fund.

From the book’s cover:

"Dog Team to Dawson is a nostalgic collection of true Yukon stories written by bestselling author Bruce Batchelor. This book is the prequel to Bruce's Nine Dog Winter, providing readers of that classic account with earlier adventures into the heart and soul of the Yukon Territory."

I’m usually at choir on Tuesdays and sometimes on Thursdays and I might make it out for a Monday session.

Anyone in our choir community who won’t, or might not, be able to connect with me at choir is welcome to contact me to make alternate arrangements by emailing [email protected] or calling 250-380-0998.

thanks, cheers,

**************************** QUOTE BREAK ****************************

Once upon a time, wasn’t singing a part of everyday life as much as talking, physical exercise, and religion? Our distant ancestors, wherever they were in this world, sang while pounding grain, paddling canoes, or walking long journeys. Can we begin to make our lives once more all of a piece? Finding the right songs and singing them over and over is a way to start. And when one person taps out a beat, while another leads into the melody, or when three people discover a harmony they never knew existed, or a crowd joins in on a chorus as though to raise the ceiling a few feet higher, then they also know there is hope for the world.

SOUNDINGS IN CONCERT (May 24 & 25)

I hope that many of you will take me up on my invitation to hear Soundings at one of our concerts on either Saturday May 24 (8:00 at Oak Bay United) or Sunday May 25 (2:30 at St Mary's in Saanichton). The "Contemporary" program is wonderful, with pieces from people like Lennon-McCartney, Coldplay, Bob Marley, Sting, Randy Newman, and Pete Seeger (you'll be able to sing along with that one!).

Soundings was born out of the GHC in 2001, and has 25 enthusiastic singers. This program is all a cappella (unaccompanied).

I'll have tickets ($20/$15) at all GHC evenings, or you can email ticket reservations to [email protected].   See you there?

Please join us for an inspirational evening.Wednesday, May 28th, 2014, 7:30pm – 9:00 pm

SONGS AND STORIES OF DAVY THE PUNKBob Bossin In Performance At The Uno Festival! (May 28, 29 & 31)

Many of us will remember Bob from his appearances with the GHC a few years ago. This is a new one-man show about his father, Davy Bossin, who was born in 1905, and grew up in the Ward, Toronto’s notorious immigrant slum. Finding his way blocked by the rampant anti-Semitism of 20th century Canada, Davy blazed his own path in a new, vibrant, international industry…gambling.

JUST FOR FUNA reward of laughter for reading this far

I HAVE TO PASS THIS CLASS!

Submitted by Bill Hanson GHC Bass etc. after a about 40 minutes of Google searches on various phrases that included “humor” and only finding jokes that were either too salacious but funny or non-salacious but dumb. This one finally caught a balance that tickled my funny bone.

A student comes to a young professor's office hours.

She glances down the hall, closes his door, and kneels pleadingly.

"I have to pass this class," she pleads.

The professor looks at his grade book and shakes his head. "You've missed most lectures, you haven't done the homework, and the one paper you wrote was terrible -- it shows you don't know the material."

Page 19: CREATE & POST PDF VERSION BEFORE SENDING  · Web view

"But you don't understand!" she says. "If I don't pass your class, I can't graduate."

"The final is 50 percent of your grade," the professor says. "If you get 95 percent, you would end up with a D, which is passing."

"I would do anything to pass the final," she says.

She leans closer to him, flips back her hair, gazes meaningfully into his eyes."I mean..." she whispers, "I would do anything!"

"Anything?" he says, returning her intense gaze. "Do you really mean ...anything?"

"Absolutely!" she says, finally smiling broadly.

His voice turns to a whisper: "Would you... study?"
