SPECIAL NOTES!!!!GHC “CURRENT SINGERS ONLY” SECTION UPDATE

Parts files have now been posted in in the GHC web site’s “Current Singers Only” section for most of our concert songs. If you have questions about how to play or download audio files please click here. If the answers you need are not on the web page that link opens up, or if

Page 2: CREATE & POST PDF VERSION BEFORE SENDING€¦  · Web viewNEWSLETTER NOTES. WORD LIMITS & WORD COUNTS . I get a number of items submitted each week that are over the 100 word limit

you have problems with any of the practice file links let me know at: [email protected] or 250-920-4160.

If you are currently registered with the Gettin’ Higher Choir and you didn’t get, or can’t find, your copy of the Current Singer’s Only Access Codes email (sent out Mar. 14) let me know so I can send you one.

A GERM FREE SINGING ZONE

Given the nasty bugs that have been floating around Victoria in recent weeks, and in light of their causing the postponement of the first week of choir, it isn’t surprising that that there is a concern felt by some members of choir. A couple of members have expressed that concern to me after finding themselves singing next to someone showing cold symptoms.

If you find yourself experiencing such symptoms I’m sure it would be appreciated by all if you could keep them at home. When we are singing in such close quarters it is very easy to pass your germs on to others.

You can use the parts files posted on our site to practice at home…and…once you have recovered you can always come to extra practices to catch up on what you have missed.

RELEASE CONCERTS FOR CCLT GRAD CARI BURDETT’S DEBUT CD “MAGNOLIA”

On Saturday Cari will be performing with a stellar group of musicians in Oak Bay and then again on Sunday on Saltspring Island. All the details on these March 21 & 22 events can be found in the Community Events section. I encourage all music lovers to go!

If you need more than my word to get you to scroll down to the listing for these events this is what Kelly Nakatsuka of CBC Radio Victoria and former GHC Thursday Tenor had to say…

“Cari Burdett’s Magnolia is a stunning accomplishment. Her voice is strong and versatile...bringing listeners on a rich journey across genres and musical eras. She is supported by a remarkable cast of superb musicians.”

…and from Gloria Hansen, GHC Dir. Asst., HNC Registrar, CCLT Registrar (and much more)…

I went to Hermann's Jazz Club to hear these songs…both Cari and the band were incredible.  I would heartily endorse attending.

PLEASE NOTE THAT DENIS'S POETRY WORKSHOP HAS BEEN POSTPONED TO APRIL 10/11

POETRY WORKSHOP WITH DENIS

Over two sessions, Denis will gently guide you to deepen your own dialogue with the ancient and honoured poetic tradition. Working with poems mainly

Page 3: CREATE & POST PDF VERSION BEFORE SENDING€¦  · Web viewNEWSLETTER NOTES. WORD LIMITS & WORD COUNTS . I get a number of items submitted each week that are over the 100 word limit

from the 20th century, he will explore the ways that poetry works both on the page and within us, and how it can enlighten and enliven our own passages.

Denis will focus mainly on poems that are inspired by the natural world. By considering such aspects of poetry as image, sound, form, syntax and allusion, we will seek to broaden into a tradition that, at its heart, carries the wisdom of humanity, if only we are able to find a way beyond its sometimes opaque surface.

Length: 1 evening, 1 dayTime: Fri Apr. 10, 7 pm to 9 pm; Sat Apr. 11, 10 am to 5 pm

NEWSLETTER NOTESWORD LIMITS & WORD COUNTS

I get a number of items submitted each week that are over the 100 word limit and even over my 115 word “Oh well I’ll let it go” limit. Perhaps the problem is that some of you aren’t sure of what to count or how to count it so….

What to count

All the words in the “body” of your item (ie everything except the Title and your “Submitted by..” line)

How to count Unfortunately I can only give you the method for MS Word here which is to select all of your body copy and then look down in the bottom right hand corner of your Word window to where you can see something like:

(the number after the / is the number of characters)

If you feel the urge to see more information simply “right” click on the “words” section and a list of different types of information regarding your copy will pop-up.

Most other word processing programs will have some way of giving you a word count without you having to do the old 1, 2, 3, 4…. I don’t know, however, whether there are any email programs that offer such a function. I haven’t found one in my treasured, but ancient, Eudora program but more recent email programs and services may. If your email program doesn’t you could consider writing your item in a program that does and then, when it is ready to submit, copy it and paste into your email.

APPRECIATIONSHI CHOIR FRIENDS

I am delighted to finally be back in Guatemala after 8 years. I am in San Antonio Palopo on the shore of Lake Atitlan to work on our project here that you have so generously supported at our scarf sales over the years.

I am so happy to be back in this village that i love so much - in spite of the extreme poverty, it is beautiful and the people have been so warm and welcoming.

WE have been very busy with our projects, especially working with the centre in our little casita, where we have programs for women and children in great need. One of my favourites is the lunch we serve once a week to a group of 17 " ancianas' - elderly women, some of whom have only this one full meal a week. Most of them barefoot and with few teeth left but they are delightful to spend time with even though they speak little spanish, (they speak their indigenous language), we somehow communicate beautifully.  Yesterday, we all danced together after lunch - lots of smiles and chuckles and some tears.

One of our concerns is that the temporary school in the basement of the church, established after the school was damaged by the mudslides 5 years ago, is being forced out of the church march 31 st and as the govt. won't build a proper school, another temporary school is being built by the parents on top of the mercado for 500 students and as again there was no govt. help we are financing it. And we think our govt is bad?

We only have a week left - it will hard to leave - and we have so much more to do.

If you want to read more about what we are doing and see some photos, please check out or blog below.

Much love to all of you and a heartfelt thank you for your interest and support,

THOUGHT FOR FOOD

As readers of this newsletter may have noticed once or twice a season I tend to recommend Blair Mart Mediterranean Foods, my favourite store here in Victoria. I recently stumbled across a Monday Magazine article about it on-line that I’d like to share with you. I think it is a couple or three years old but it has some good things to say about a store, its owner and its mouth watering variety of incredible edibles all of which deserving of such good things being said.

Check it out!

Please sponsor me in BOWL FOR KIDS SAKE APRIL 10, 2015

Big Brothers Big Sisters in Victoria matches about 500 children to improve their lives. We have 100 children on the waiting list. Most are boys and stay on that list for up to 2 years. We have volunteers but not the resources to set up the matches. Making a match is an important step and great care must be taken. We are raising money to reduce that waiting list.

I'm bowling in the 2015 Bowl for Kids Sake for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Victoria on April 10 and I'd like you to sponsor me. You can do it online and will automatically get a tax receipt.   http://bowlforkidssakevictoria.kintera.org/mikewyeth

THE SECRET LIFE OF POEMS: (Mar 20 & 21) with Denis Donnelly

Sunday Afternoon SACRED WRITING CIRCLES (Mar 22, 29 & Apr 5, etc.) with Junie Swadron What’s it about?   It’s sharing from our hearts, it’s laughter, it’s friendship. It’s learning to stop judging our work, it’s sipping tea. It’s finding our voice and feeling safe to speak our words out loud. It’s about being authentic and kind. It’s about music and moving our bodies during the break. It’s about creativity and it’s about catharsis – allowing the writing to become our wise teacher.   It’s poetry and it’s prose. Short stories and drawings that we write from. It’s different every time! Every Sunday Ongoing2:30 – 4:45 p.m.$20.00 Limited Space. $20.00

Please sponsor me in BOWL FOR KIDS SAKE 2015  (April 10)
