NOT LONG ago I mentioned the difficulty I had gettingrid of books. Every time I tried to trim down the number ofbooks on my shelves the volumes selected for removal wouldcry out to me: “I’ll be good. I promise not to collect dust. AndI won’t slouch, so my spine doesn’t become crooked.”

Then two things happened to give me the courage to let goof some of my children. The first was relocation. Movers loveboxes of books. They add weight and can be loaded easily

with hand trucks. I had to get serious about paring down. Thesecond thing was a message from Paula Cohen, a member ofThe Friends of Harrison Memorial Library. Paula informedme of the forthcoming annual book sale to benefit theLibrary. She wanted me to know that any books I donatedwould be well cared for. She assured me that persons whopurchased my books would be vetted to insure the bookswere going to good homes and that I would have visitationrights. She even acquiesced when I insisted that my books bekept away from sexually explicit material.

Books are needed now, even though the sale doesn’t takeplace until August. Members of “Friends” have been collect-ing books for the past three months. They will continueaccepting donations every Tuesday from 10 a.m. until noonat a building behind Sunset Center. Signs along San Carlosand Junipero point the way to the collection site at San Carlosand 10th.

This is the 43rd annual book sale. Harriet Harrell, whoworked the sale until she was 97 years old, organized it in1972.

“She was the driving force,” said Susan Murphy, thegroup’s current president. “My mother was her friend, andthat’s how I got involved. This is a great organization of vol-unteers. More than 50 people help out at the three-day sale(August 6 - 8).”

The book sale’s purpose is to provide major funding forthe Harrison Memorial Library.

“I really appreciate all the hard working, dedicated mem-bers of Friends,” Librarian Janet Bombard said. “They makea substantial contribution every year. Last year proceedsfrom the book sale accounted for 18 percent of our bookbudget.”

The Friends are eager and willing to accept your dona-tions. However, to make it easier for you to donate, and easierfor them to receive saleable books, there are some guidelinesestablished by Anne Rurka, who has chaired this event for thelast six years.

Please don’t bring in musty, moldy, or mildewed books. If

rub their spines. This relaxes them. Then, tell them they aregoing to a far, far better place. (Books by Dickens understandthis). I tell the older books to look after the younger ones –to especially make sure they don’t lose their jackets. I makesure they have my phone number so they may call me if thereis an emergency – such as a book with a burst appendix. I tellthem not to be upset if someone rifles their pages or stickstheir nose in them. They should make themselves irresistibleso someone will take them home. And, finally, I tell them thatthis is not “goodbye,” but “farewell.” Perhaps we’ll see eachother again in another format.

The Friends of Harrison Memorial Library promotesawareness of the library by hosting author programs for thepublic and sponsoring a bookmark contest for area youth.

Members receive announcements of author programs andan invitation to the “Friend’s Preview” for the annual booksale. Annual dues are $10. To become a member contact:Carole Frederickson, membership chair, at (831) 626-9067,or mail your name, address and dues to:

Treasurer, Friends of Harrison Memorial Library, P.O.Box 87, Carmel. The zip code is 93921.

Jerry Gervase can be contacted [email protected].

Now is the time to donate for the Harrison Memorial Library book saleyou don’t want them, no one else will either.

Sets of books (including encyclopedias) don’t sell, nomatter how helpful they were to your kids’ homework. Thesame is true with textbooks.

No Yearbooks, please. The schools don’t even want themback. Maybe your grandchildren would be interested in themto see how you looked back in the day.

Save us the trouble of recycling your magazines. Instead, try sneaking them into a physician’s waiting room, especiallymagazines with covers that would look good with greenNaugahyde chairs.

Readers Digest condensed books make good doorstops orhelp prop up a window with a broken sash cord. They don’tsell at book sales.

No old greeting cards, please. Keep your maps, book-marks, and calendars, too. Books that have been heavily writ-ten in, or with pages and pages of highlighting have no inter-est to prospective buyers.

Playable audio books are welcome, as are CD’s, tapes, andDVD’s in good condition.

Finally, before you donate books to the book sale, youmay want to do what I do.

First of all, gather them all together in a circle, and gently

Selling land and suggesting wines; landmark property hits the market

DAVID LYNG Real Estate’s newestrealtor, George Fletes, can do more than help

you find a new chateau. He can also help youfind a nice Chateauneuf du Pape to cele-brate. That’s because he’s also been a som-melier at The Lodge at PebbleBeach. He still works there someevenings, but he’s enjoying the tran-sition to his new career in realestate.

He said, “I’ve had my real estatelicense for about six months now,”and explained that he decided itmight be an interesting career afterselling some investment propertieshe had in Arizona.

He and his family live in Marinaand he likes running and biking. And of course, Fletes said, “I play alot of golf.” Seems like he’s found asweet spot to do all of that and starta new career, too.

In other news, a piece of Carmel

history is up for sale. According to an article by Elizabeth

Barratt in the February 2014Carmel Historian, IrishmanWilliam Hatton moved toCarmel Valley in 1884 andacquired a 1,000-acre dairyranch. Some of the land iswhere the Barnyard now sits,

and from Barratt’s description, it sounds likethe shopping center’s building and its wind-mill are an homage to the old dairy.

Barratt wrote that,at his peak, Hattonowned or managed2,200 acres of dairyfarms stretching fromHighway One to thepresent-day ValleyHills ShoppingCenter. Through suc-ceeding generations, much of the land wassold and the family’soriginal Victorianhome was torn down.Today, 140 acresremain. According toErnie Lostrom ofLostrom and

Real Estate InsiderBy ELAINE HESSER

Company, which represents the seller, muchof the land is leased for use as RanchoCañada’s golf course. Hatton family attorneyMatt Welty even said the clubhouse willrevert to the Hattons when the lease expiresin 2017.

Lostrom said, “we feel very proud to have

been trusted to sell this family legacy asset. Iam certain that it will be the largest propertyin Carmel that I will ever work on.”

It sounds like a big job and we’re gladLostrom’s up to the challenge.
