On Saturday, May 21, Kevin Sharpe, founder ofZCW, set off from John O’Groats in his electricblue Tesla Roadster along with EV expert David Peilow, both taking turns at the wheel.

This was the first end-to-end trip of the UK in a production elec-tric car. Completed in a similar time to that of a petrol vehicle, except their journey was completed with zero emissions. Thedrivers reached Lands End on Sunday, with stops to charge upusing a combination of Tesla High-Powered Chargers andMedium-Power Chargers donated by ZCW along the way. Thishistoric drive combined the Electric Tesla Roadster’s long rangewith the current National charging station infrastructure. Thetotal 894-mile feat is estimated to have used no more than £20worth of electricity.

Electric vehicle owners can now enjoy the benefits of their carsas they tour Great Britain, and conveniently recharge while having a meal, using leisure facilities, or indulging in anovernight stay. Tesla’s High Power Chargers (HPC) delivers 70amps of electricity, fully charging an empty battery in less thanthree hours, and “topping off” a partially charged battery in afraction of that time. Complimenting the HPC network, ZeroCarbon World, a charity dedicated to creating a clean energy fu-ture, has installed Medium Power Chargers (MPCs), delivering32 amps, at several sites throughout Nottingham and Britain.www.zerocarbonworld.org Follow them on Facebook and join in the chat on Twitter @zerocarbonworld

Zero Carbon World is a pro-active UK charity ded-icated to delivering a zero carbon society. “We undertake projects that reduce energy

wastage, deploy renewable energy and changelifestyles accordingly; encouraging early adop-tion of these alternative solutions to produce di-rect benefits for the planet and our futurewellbeing. Established in 2009, we rely purely ondonations and community support. 100% of allfunding received is fed directly into our projectsin order to drive them forward and achieve ourvision. We can provide pictures, interviews with the

drivers and a map of the trip specifying all chargelocations as well as arranging new additionalphoto opportunities you feel relevant”.

Important Facts:• 11% of UK’s electricity goes on the refining process offuel. That means we could shut down 1 in 10 of ourpower stations if we didn’t have fuel driven vehicles.• We have enough electricity to run 30 million electricvehicles – now! • Average journey in the UK is 6.2 miles • Charging stations are usually sold commercially for£1,500 - £40,000depending on the power level • Zero Carbon World have donated 15 medium powerchargers to businessesnationwide • The electrical components needed for the donatedZCW MPC’s cost no more than £100 and can charge anelectric vehicle faster than the government installed lowpower chargers that cost £1,500

Hearing Dogs for Deaf People is a nationalcharity and centre of excellence in train-ing hearing dogs to alert deaf people toeveryday household sounds and dangersignals in the home, work place and inpublic buildings.

Hearing Dogs was launched at the worldfamous Crufts dog show in 1982. Sincethen they have created over 1,600 life-changing partnerships between deaf people and hearing dogs in the UK. There are currently over 750 working partnerships in the country.

The Charity trains hearing dogs to alertdeaf people to important householdsounds and danger signals such as thealarm clock, doorbell, telephone andsmoke alarm - providing independence, confidence and security, as well as valuable companionship.

Hearing dogs alert their deaf recipientsto household sounds by touching themwith a paw or nudging with a nose to gainattention. The recipient then asks the dog'what is it?' by voice and/or hand com-mand and then the hearing dog leads therecipient to the source of the sound. Fordanger signals such as the smoke alarm, the hearing dog will alert the recipient inthe same way, but when asked 'what is it?'the dog will lie down to indicate danger. The types of breeds they train to become

hearing dogs are typically Labradors, Re-trievers, Spaniels, Poodles (and crossesthereof ) along with some smaller breedssuch as Cavaliers. The Charity has its own breeding scheme

and receives donations of puppies to train

from breeders andmembers of the public. Hearing dogs are easily

recognisable by theirdistinctive burgundyjacket and lead slips, which helps to identifythe recipient’s otherwise‘invisible’ disability, bringing increased peaceof mind for the deaf person. Deafness canbe a very isolating and lonely disability, a hearing dog can offer a life-transforming practical alternative to technical equipment – particularly forthose deaf people who find such equipment restricting – with the addedbenefit of giving the recipient greater independence, increased confidence, companionship and a feeling of security.

With the summer progressing and theever changing garden giving us different colours how do we keep upthe beautiful array of colour that wesought back in spring? What about my flagging garden that looked so good back inSpring?Avoid that late-summer slump that befalls many gardens at thistime of year by adding some striking plants to your borders.Scented plants, plants with height, structure, colour or even toencourage wildlife, try these.....

Tropical trump cardsLarge leaves, vibrant colours, unusual blooms and a touch of theexotic in your garden - why not recreate that holiday feel?

A palm is probably one the most obvious choices for that‘somewhere other than my plain old garden’ feeling and Trachy-carpus fortunei is the nation's favourite hardy palm (don’t neg-lect the ‘hardy’ aspect as you will lose your palm as soon aswinter bites if it is not one of the hardy species). The Acanthus mollis can conjure up a jungle atmosphere with

large glossy leaveswhich last wellinto winter - anattractive blueflower spike ap-pearing around thistime. Preferring full sun, it will tolerate some shade, allowingyou flexibility to add tropical drama in just the spot you needit.

With its huge leaves, Paulownia tormentosa will certainlyadd an interest point to your garden. You must cut this plantdown virtually to ground level every spring to ensure thelargest leaves as well as to keep it in check.

Looking to spice up your borders? Go on! - with this exoticbloom, Crocosmia ‘Lucifer'. Vibrant and almost sizzling redflowers grow on arching spikes above lengths of mid-greenlush leaf. Needs a fertile, moist well-drained soil. It really doeswork very well from midsummer onwards adding a welcomeintensity of colour.

Reinvigorate your borders! As your borders start to become a little tired, pop in some ver-tical plants to add impact - they use the minimum floor space.

Grasses start to reach their best around late Summer: Mis-canthus, Stipa Gigantea, Calamagrostis and Panicums workbeautifully with many perennials.Eupatorium purpureum has huge purple-pink puffs of flowerreaching up nearly two metres! Superb for creating impact inborders. Eupatoriums are butterfly attractors and also look

great if left to stand through the winter months.Verbascums are the ‘fireworks’ of any grass type border and

have tall spikes which rise above a silvery coloured foliage. - re-quiring well-drained soil to thrive, and should self-seed.Rising well above two metres high producing an enormousspike of a yellow flower, Verbascum Olympicum is the largest ofthe species. Other spires to choose from include lupins, holly-hocks (Alcea rosea ‘Nigra' flowers a sumptuous deep blackcur-rant. Red-hot pokers actually come into their own at this time ofyear, and are a real eye-catcher. These glow like embers whenmixed with tall grasses, and is even more visually arresting whenseen as a colour contrast with orange pokers sizzling whenmixed with purple drifts of Verbena Bonariensis.

Summer sees yellow, orange and red Daylilies create a colourfulclimax in any border - there are thousands of varieties.

The South African perennial, Agapanthus produces huge blueblooms now and would be highly suited being centre-stage in ametal container in your favourite spot in the garden.

Phase your plantsSo there’s no reason to stop enjoying planting your garden foreven more colour as the summer progress - half the pleasure isin seeing how you can ‘ring the changes’ virtually each month asone species takes over from another and keeps your gardenalive to the dance of the Sun. Enjoy!

Gillian and Neil set up Vintage Bluebird Gifts and Interi-ors to create a sanctuary for the independent mindedshopper. “We hope that the shop reflects this spirit andyou find something to your taste and pocket”.

The bluebird is a symbol of hope. Sailors would get a tattoo in port whenever they completed 5,000 nauticalmiles. One popular tattoo was that of a bluebird with itswings spread, positioned on the hand between the indexfinger and the thumb. If a sailor was ever in trouble thesimple action of making the birds wings flap would send a message of hope to would be rescuers.

Vintage Bluebird Gifts and Interiors is situated in a prettycourtyard within a grade II listed mill in the village ofDraycott Derbyshire. A warm welcome and wonderfulshopping experience are assured and Gillian and Neilwould love to meet you.

L S Plumbing & Home Maintenance is a brand new businessventure set up by Lloyd Spendlove of Chilwell, who havingfound himself being made redundant recently after 25 yearsas a Plumber, decided to use this potentially devastating ex-perience as an opportunity to do what he has always wantedto do, which is run his own community based business.“I felt that the redundancy has come at a time in my lifewhere, as my two sons are mostly grown up (incidentally, both of my boys were paperboys for over 5 years in the localarea and went to the local primary and secondary schools soyou may find you know us as a family already) my wife and I,confident in my abilities to successfully work in the community, could be brave and try to strike out on my own.”Obviously, as a fully trained and experienced Plumber,Plumbing is a staple of the business, however there aremany aspects of Home (and Garden) Maintenance, thatLloyd can turn his adept hands to and on his new face-book page (search L S Plumbing and Home Maintenance)there are pictures of his work for you to inspect, includingfencing, decking, and gravel drives, where you can see thatthere is a pride taken in the work done. Further to this Lloydcan easily handle most DIY tasks throughout the home.So if you have any jobs need doing, inside or out, from thesmallest to the largest, please contact Lloyd directly on

Meet Liam Webb, the proud owner of Maple Tree Care.“From an early age I have had an interest in the outdoors! When I left Friesland School I started an apprenticeship studying sports turf at a local golf club. I developed interest intree work when working there.

Unfortunately I was made redundant but this gave me a newlease of life. I applied for and was offered a job with a wellknown tree company in Derby. Going to Brooksby College andlearning on the job attending various college courses I wasadding more skills to my belt!

Having been in the industry for five years and family andfriends asking me to do tree work this gave me ambition to setup my own business. Six months ago Maple Tree Care wasformed. This was a big decision but following various conversations with my parents I decided now was the time tomake the move. I must say without the financial support of myparents this could not have happened. My parents say I wasdestined to work with trees having found me climbing them ata very early age.

Some customers have commented I am young but I ampleased to say they are more than surprised when I have completed the task set for me. My team and I believe in 110%customer feed back. We do not mess around and we do notleave a mess behind! No job is too big or too small. All waste isrecycled and we are fully insured”. Call Liam on 07860 725113

On the 29th July- 31st Julythis year Will Grimshaw, who isBeeston based, and three friends willbe undertaking a 50-55 mile walk in Francefor the Help for Heroes Charity.

Any visitor to Northern France or Belgium willleave the Channel ports and within an hour encounter the silent white cities which dot the land-scape. The cemeteries mark the last resting place of thou-sands of men from these isles who gave their lives duringthe Great War. A sobering sight until you realise that manymore have no known grave and are listed on a number of

memorials in the region. Two such monuments at Arras and Thiepval include the names of over 120,000 poorsouls who left little for relatives to grieve over apart from a simple, engraved name. They have planned a route, the majority of which covers the famous WW1

battlefield of the Somme and are calling the walk, ‘In the footsteps of heroes past, for the heroes of today’.The route will start at the Arras Memorial and will finish at the Thiepval Memorial, which themselves commemo-

rate 107,000 men with no known grave. These make up a portion of the men killed in WW1 who have no known grave, and the walk will be in their honour

to raise money for the brave men injured fighting today.Currently the funds raised stand at around £600 including donations/sponsorship made outside of the website,

but they do really want to get to a minimum of £1000 if not more. For more information visit: www.bmycharity.com/memorialswalk
