breezeappealHeart disease kills three timesmore women than breast cancerbut by turning red in Feb, you canhelp the British Heart Foundation(BHF) to reduce this number. Turn heads, warm hearts and wear red on February 24 for the BHF’sNational Wear Red Day. As part of National Heart Month the nation’s heartcharity is calling on Nottinghamshire to brush down their red dresses, shake out their red locks or even unlock their most precious Louboutinsto help raise valuable money for its fight against heart disease.

It can be a touch of red for those who want to be more alluring or itcould be a full blown outfit dedicated to the ‘emotionally-intense’ colour. With a suggested donation of just £1, women, men and children aroundthe country will make a big difference in beating the UK’s biggest killer onNational Wear Red Day.

As well as dressing in red, supporters can also hold their own event –doing whatever they please. One event can make such a difference. Lastyear, Take Heart, an East Midlands BHF affiliated Heart Support Group, supported Red for Heart by organising a quiz night which raised over£100. This gift could help to fund a cardiac nurse working on the BHFHeart Helpline for a full day. Our Nurses offer information and support tothe 2.7 million people living with heart disease in the UK.

It’s also a leap year which means there is an extra day you can use tohelp the nation’s hearts. The bonus day could be used for a Wear Red Dayif you can’t fit it in on February 24 but, if red isn’t your thing, there areother ways of getting involved and sharing the love. You can pen your treasured one a Love Note for a suggested donation of

£1 and have it posted in one of BHF’s shop windows for all to see. What’smore, any women thinking of taking advantage of the leap year can usethe heart-shaped notes as the perfect way to pop the question.

Or buy your loved one a gift such as a Sweetheart Hot Water Bottle orHeart Cufflinks – there is a whole array of heart-warming gifts at BHF’sonline shop. http://giftshop.bhf.org.uk/ The British Heart Foundation (BHF) is the nation’s heart charity dedicated

to saving lives through pioneering research, patient care, campaigningfor change and by providing vital information.

Heart disease remains the UK’s biggest killer. There are almost 2.7 millionpeople in the UK living with coronary heart disease and every six minutessomeone dies of a heart attack, so it urgently relies on donations of timeand money to continue its life-saving work.

Its vision couldn’t be much more ambitious - a world where people nolonger die prematurely from heart disease. To find out more and to order your free Red for Heart Fundraising

Kit, which is packed full of red themed ideas for all ages. Visit bhf.org.uk/red or call 0300 330 0645

Midlands Women's Aid wishes all our supporters a HappyNew Year and we extend our thanks to all who supportedour fund raising efforts during the Christmas period.

Celebrating Forty Years of Women's AidIn November 1971 Women's Aid was formed. The organizationis now forty years old. This means that over a generation ofwomen and children experiencing Domestic Abuse havebenefited from the services provided. In the days before Women's Aid women had no choice but to

stay with their violent partners as there was no where to go.Support was limited and statutory agencies had little or no

sympathy or understanding towards the effects of Domestic Abuse. Women's Aid has worked hard since 1971 to raise awareness of Domestic Abuse

and its effects on families experiencing such abuse. We work in partnership with allstatutory agencies to offer women a whole range of options. Women no longerhave to stay in a violent relationship.

“We offer Outreach support for women and children to inform them of theiroptions, support them to make decisions about their future, offer refuge forwomen that need to leave their homes and support them to secure re-housing. We offer training around increasing self esteem, confidence building andemployability skills to name but a few.

However, due to continued cuts in government funding many of our services areat risk. We have to raise more money by our own efforts. This year as part of thebirthday celebrations we plan to hold fund raising events throughout the year andwe ask you to support us in these endeavours. This could be by sponsoring anevent, donating a raffle prize or volunteering your time. The 8th March 2012 is International Women's day. Throughout the month we

intend to hold several events celebrating women and women's issues. We are interested in hearing from local women from all walks of life who have

stories about women's achievements, their experiences overcoming difficultiesand/or their input into the Community. We have many other fund raising events planned throughout the year and some

of these will be advertised in next months issue”.If you would like to be involved in these celebrations or wish to donate to our

organization, please contact Cathy on 0115 9257647 or write to MidlandsWomen's Aid, P.O. Box 8, Beeston, Nottingham. NG9 1HL

It is still though a time of limited daylight. Here we look at a fun project that canbring you fresh produce even now inmidwinter - all you need is a striplight, afew other bits and a longing to growsomething...

Let there be light! The most important element in plant growth is ofcourse light. What may surprise many people (including someenthusiastic gardeners!) is that it is remarkable easy to set up yourown rig which will enable you to grow plants right now in the darkestmonths of a British winter. This might not seem like a big deal but think of the thrill of growing

something that normally you wouldn’t be able to until around May orJune time - the opportunity to tend and nurture, to see the fruits ofyour labours (quite literally if you grow food bearing plants!).

This method is intended to put a bit of fun back into your hobby thiswinter so why not give it a try this weekend?

Starter project: Grow your own indoor tomatos:

If you have recently been eating those pale, hard, tasteless, imitations of tomatos sometimes sold in shops, you maylong for the real thing - this is the way you can have it! (see‘how to grow your tomato plants from seed’ below to haveplants ready for the following growing cycle under artificiallight).

1. Add your soil/growing compost to the pot or simply usea growbag. Use a good fertiliser that is water soluble.

2. Plant your tomato plant into the soil - dig a hole about 1to 2 inches into the soil and place the tomato plant into it,bedding in gently with your fingers. Fertilise regularly, butlightly, beginning about two weeks after transplanting.

3. Place the tomato plant directly under the artificial light -around 30 - 40cm away from the tube. The light should beon for 12 to 16 hours every day for the tomato plant togrow effectively but not be left on 24 hours a day, sincetomato plants do need some time in the dark.

Generally, if you turn on the light when you awaken in themorning and turn it off before bed, it will be fine. Or use atimer to make sure the tomato plant gets enough light.

Maintain a temperature rang in these mature plants ataround 18c during artificial light hours and keep themhigher than around 6c at ‘night” (when the light is not on).

4. Water plants thoroughly, but not too frequently. When plants start to flower, tap the main stem and larger

side branches with your finger. This moves the plantslightly and encourages pollination. As you tap the plant, you may just see a small cloud of pollen falling from theopen flowers.

As each plant has provided its crop and has becomeunproductive, cut it off at the base, saving the potting soilfor future transplants. Simply place the old plant on thecompost heap.

5. Harvest your tomatoes. Harvest the tomatoes as soon asthey are ripe for the best nutritional value. Continue towater and give light to your tomato plant, since you shouldbe able to get multiple harvests from one plant.

This is probably the best time to invest in solarPV, with the cost of installation at an all time low. With the new feed-in tariff of 21p per unit a 2kwpinstall could save you over £500 per year on

electricity saving. Feed-in tariff payments giv-ing a return on investment of nearly 9%.

These can give a much better return oninvestment than a typical bank or build-

ing society and is a tax free income on domestic installations. The feed-in tariff is index linked and, after years of talkingabout climate change, feed-in tariffs are fast becoming theaccepted norm when upgrading your energy use.Solar PV or Photo Voltaic panels are electricity generatorson your roof, they capture the sun light and turn it intoelectricity which you can use or sell back to your electric-ity supplier, so you are getting paid twice and if you usethe electricity you save on your utility bills.

This almost sounds too good to be true but the govern-ment have introduced these measures in order to at-tract large numbers of people across the country toinstall their own generators, using solar PV, and helpthem meet their climate change targets (as there is noC02 produced with solar technology)This is the green clean way of saving on your utility billsand the environment.Furthermore, these payments aregovernment guaranteed for 25 years.

The cost of a 2kw installation starts at just £5750 and a2kw system would be ideal for a large terrace house or

semi. A detached house could accommodate a 4kw panelarray with a return on investment of up to 12%!So get using that roof space above your head to earn

yourself £££££! and call us today for more information with no obligation.
