G illotts Funeral Service in Stapleford is part of theEastwood Funeral Partnership, a family business whoseorigins go back more than a century to an era when funeral

service was very different. In 1867, the Leivers family started the ‘Star Livery Stables’ in Victoria

Street, Eastwood, next to what was to become the birthplace of theauthor DH Lawrence.

The business originally supplied horse-drawn hearses to Undertakersthroughout a wide area, and has changed over the years to reflect thechanging needs of modern families. Today, the business remains familyowned and run, and operates funeral homes in Eastwood, Stapleford,Heanor and Kimberley.

The Stapleford Funeral Home was the Partnership’s first branchoffice; established in 1986 at Carrara House on Cemetery Road inStapleford. In 1997, the funeral home moved to the current muchlarger premises at 136 Derby Road in Stapleford. Thefuneral home was originally named Staplefords FuneralService, but in 2008 was renamed Gillotts Funeral Serviceto reflect the funeral home’s growing reputationthroughout a much wider area, and to strengthen itsidentity as an independent family business.

“Our emphasis is on providing a personal service in aflexible and professional way. After meeting with a familyto discuss their wishes, our funeral directors will then doeverything they can to make those wishes a reality. Forsome families this may involve a traditional Church servicefollowed by a burial, for others this may mean a non-religious service followed by cremation, with a brightlydecorated coffin carried in a horse-drawn or motorcyclehearse”.

In the past decade in particular, the number of choices and optionsavailable to families has grown enormously, and sometimes time isneeded to make certain decisions.

“For this reason, families in our care receive our 36-page funeralfolder, which contains a host of information to help them over the daysleading up to the funeral. This includes a list of well-known hymnssuitable for funeral services, information about our service sheetprinting service, a number of poems and verses which can be read atthe funeral, and a range of containers for cremated remains, rangingfrom traditional Urns and Caskets, to remembrance jewellery, sundialsand even a teddy bear specially designed to hold a portion of cremat-ed remains or keepsakes”. In years past, the subject of money and funerals was often shrouded

in mystery. As members of the National Association of FuneralDirectors, they have always believed in being open and honest aboutfuneral costs. The funeral folder contains information about theircharges and those of third parties, and is available to all from theirpremises, and can also be downloaded from their website;www.gillottsfuneralservice.co.uk

All clients receive a written estimate of the likely costswhen a funeral is arranged. They regularly monitorfuneral costs in the local area to provide the highestquality service at a fair price, and they welcome allenquiries.Over the years there have been many changes, but some

very important aspects remain the same - the business hasretained its family base, and still operates to the samemaxim as it did in generations past: “Treat others as youwould wish to be treated yourself.”

breeze appeal

Marie Curie CancerCare is askingpeople to help ‘paintthe town yellow’ thisMarch by wearing adaffodil pin to backits annual GreatDaffodil Appeal.

Every donation for a daffodil will helpmore Marie Curie Nurses to providefree care to terminally ill people in

their own homes or one of the charity’shospices.

Sixty-five per cent of the population wouldchoose to die at home if they were terminal-ly ill, yet the majority die in hospital, theplace they least want to be. This year MarieCurie Nurses will provide free care for 29,000terminally ill people across the UK. DebbieVentham, one of the charity’s NursingAmbassadors, tells her own story.

“My mum died of cancer on the first day ofthe millennium and, just a couple of weekslater, my sister Diana was diagnosed withbreast cancer. Diana battled with cancer forseveral years but she made sure she lived lifeto the full during the time she had left. Ilooked after her right to the end and shedied at home in May 2007 surrounded by allher family, including her husband and fourchildren.

“Like my sister, most people want to be athome – in their own bed, looking out ontotheir own garden, with their family andfriends close by – and Marie Curie CancerCare makes this possible.

“Marie Curie Nurses work shifts, often atnight, to give patient’s carers the chance totake a break, spend quality time with theirloved one, or simply get a good night’s sleep.Just being there to talk to patients and theirfamilies and put their mind at ease aboutany worries or fears they may have can makeall the difference.

“In March I’ll be wearing my daffodil pin inmemory and celebration of my mother, sister, and all the patients I’ve had theprivilege of looking after over the years. Please join me by wearing a daffodil pin andensuring that every person with a terminalillness has the choice to access free MarieCurie nursing care.”

Daffodil pins can be picked up from localstores, schools, street collectors and MarieCurie Shops across the UK throughoutMarch. People with a couple of hours tospare can turn these into Marie Curie nursinghours by joining their local team of volunteercollectors, or by organising their ownfundraising event. Why not get yourcolleagues together and set yourself a newwork target - help raise £5m for Marie CurieCancer Care as part of the Great DaffodilAppeal this March.

You’ve entertained the relatives, put away the seasonal decor -it’s now time to turn yourattention to your home. With this month’s suggestion

we’ve the experts on hand tohelp you get the look you desire...

S oft, colourful shades are easy to live with, and a great way toget rooms ready for spring. Pick up on the power of pastelswith our guide to pretty pinks, beautiful blues and gorgeous

greens. If you need further convincing, just look around at the new crop of

soft pastel colours blooming in homeware. These gentle shades mimicthe colours of new growth and plants that we can look forward toseeing blossom in the garden as well as uplifting, sunny skies.

So think of a palette of blushing pinks, soft blues - duck egg and tealare particularly popular this year - as well as delicate mossy greensand primrose yellows.

Pastels seem to have a perennial appeal, possibly because they’reuber-easy on the eye. There’s something cosy and comforting aboutthem, reminiscent of childhood rooms.

They’ve now graduated from the nursery and grown up into idealcolours for conjuring a number of looks, from the faded but gloriousgrandeur of vintage to a fresh coastal style or cosy country.

Fionnuala Johnston, design manager, suggests using a patchwork offresh blues, whites and pinks to recreate the country living look thisspring.

“A gentle pastel colour palette can be brought to life with a shock ofpink to produce a homely, comfortable and inspiring look,” she says.

Pastels work particularly well when used in floral and gingham prints, perhaps intertwined with lace, ribbon and embroidery for a folksy look.

Alternatively, be imaginative and revamp a piece of furniture bypainting it a pastel shade, or choose wallpaper or bed linen in a pastelpattern. Even a discreet nod to pastels will make your rooms feel readyfor spring. continued...

Pretty PinksSoft pink is an obvious choice for thebedroom but is also worth consideringfor a small room, like a study, as it createsa warm and optimistic feel. Whenplanning your scheme, try to avoid usingmore than two pastel colours in the samespace, unless you want a very girly look.Pastels are a fresh and cheerful way tolighten up a space, making it look largerand creating a calming effect.

Why not try yellow for hallways andkitchens, and a combination of paleyellow and blue for a timelessly stylishliving room.

Beautiful BluesCapture the feeling of blue skies and seasidesettings with pale blues, or opt for the fashion-able duck egg shade for a bang-on-trend look.

Team a duck egg blue floral with pinks ormaybe lavender, suggests Jo Cassabois, windowdressings expert and owner of Pret a Vivre inLondon. “As pastel tones are so pale, they’re not

so suitable used individually for major interior decorations like a window dressing. Singly, theeffect can be too washed out,” she says.

“Mixing a couple of pastel colours turns them into a strong combination.”

Gorgeous GreensSoft greens are the perfect shades to warm and complement neutrals. They’re totally in voguebecause they reflect our desire to bring the outdoors in, with leaf-inspired patterns and foliagehues.

As the new yearbegins, you maybe consideringwhich flowers togrow from seedto create a riot ofcolour in themonths ahead -and there is noshortage of newvarieties. Breezehas some advice...

T he seed catalogues all look sotempting, promising masses ofblooms in a vast array of colours

but what you need to know is whetherthey produce what they promise, long-lasting flowers which will withstand ahost of pests and diseases, keeping yourgarden colourful through till autumn.Friolina trailing pansies and new collec-tions of bacopas and calibracoas are sureto add pizzazz to your hanging basketsand containers.

The following will flower this summerfrom a January to March sowing. Theyinclude Foxglove 'Carillon', a dwarf(12in/30cm), primrose-yellow variety withlarge flowers, and Geum 'Cooky', whichproduces bright orange, single bloomsfrom June to September, reaching 16in(40cm) in height. To see how a number of new varietiesfared, Which? Gardening, the Consumers'Association magazine, trialled 34 newvarieties, before they came on themarket, revealing the results. Seeds weresown in a heated greenhouse at the

Association's trialgardens at Capel ManorCollege in north London.Young plants werehardened off in coldframes during May andplanted out in June.

Overall winner wasRudbeckia 'Cappuccino',whose enormous flowerswere up to 24cm across. When many wereplanted together, theylooked like a carpet ofbronze, gold andchocolate brown.

Bursting into flower inJuly, these half-hardyperennials (grown asannuals) continued toflower well intoNovember.

Other high performersincluded Marigold'Double Mr Majestic',described by the magazine as a 'brilliantbedding plant' with dense foliage, strikingly uniform plants which producedhundreds of dazzling gold and maroonstriped flowers.

Lavender 'Spanish Eyes' also received thethumbs up in the trial, producing a hazeof sky blue flowers on long, elegantstems. It remained untouched by diseaseand flowered from July to September.

Other flowering plants which receivedacclaim included Cosmos 'All Sorts Mixed',which featured picotees (differentcoloured edging) and plain flowers, singles and semi-doubles in shades ofcrimson, pink and white, Viola 'ChickyChicks', a lovely mix of early and lateflowering perennial varieties with prettyfaces in blue, white, apricot, yellow, pinkand purple, and Antirrhinum 'Spangles',selected to include early and late flower-ing types for a long display.

BEST OF THE BUNCH - Dogwood(Cornus) If you clipped some of thecolourful leafless stems from yourdogwoods over the festive season, you'llrealise what valuable plants they are, producing vibrant stems in shades of red, orange, yellow, pink and purple/black. Ifyou want red stems in winter, look nofurther than the traditional Cornus alba'Sibirica', while for something different tryout C. sanguinea 'Midwinter Fire', whichhas orange and pink stems.Dogwoods, which bear clusters of white

flowers in spring and white or blue-blackfruit in the autumn, can tolerate wet soilwell and are useful for planting in clay soil, bog gardens or along riverbanks, as wellas normal gardens. They are easy to grow, but when you prune them you must cutout the oldest stems at the end of eachwinter, as the new shoots replacing themwill have the brightest stems. These areshown off to their best in full sun.

HOROSCOPES THE MONTH AHEADBy ANNE HARBOUR Dip.Hyp. HPD. MNCH - Clinical Hypnotherapist HPD.Member of the National Council for Hypnotherapy (MNCH)

ARIES [21ST March-20th April]

You are certainly not going to sitback with your feet up this month.

With plenty to do and with youfeeling much stronger in yourself, aplan of action to get things on theirway becomes not only challenging,

but exciting at the same time. Having adopted a different outlookon life to what it has been in recentmonths you make a clear picture inyour mind of how you would like2010 to go, and that is your way.

Any break ups or difficulties in anyrelationships during February are

dealt with in a mature and sensibleway. Having taken more control

over how your life is run, you makegood and positive moves which intime are beneficial, not only to you

but others also.

TAURUS [21ST April-20th May]

Taking care not to rock the boat youtread carefully in one area of yourlife which you feel you have been

treated unfairly in at times. By thinking things through youadapt a different attitude and

welcome other changes in a differ-ent way. Feeling unloved and

emotionally insecure, you reach outto someone close, listening to whatthey have to say but not necessarily

taking their good and sensibleadvice. Some success regarding work

pleases you with some financialimprovement. By accepting one

social invitation you become awareof an admirer of yours and enjoy the

evening much better than youthought possible. Any minor health

problems are dealt with easily.

GEMINI [21ST May-21ST June]

With your charismatic persona youtread where no other dare regard-ing romance. For the single this is amonth of excitement, with many an

opportunity to make that specialrelationship more special. Making up

for lost time goes well and in turnallows you both to look forward tothe future in a positive and secure

way. It appears to becomeimportant to you during the month,

that time is spent with friends orfamily who you haven’t been in

touch with for some time. A gathering socially leads to bettertimes for all. Any disappointments

experience of late becomes yesterday’s news. Ideas for earningextra pennies become reality with

welcoming prospects.

CANCER [212ND June-23RD July]

By making sure everything goes yourway you arrange a suitable time tovisit an interesting place for a well-earned break. Careful not to rock

the boat with finances you plan thetime accordingly. Loosing small items

in or around the home infuriatesyou, particularly when the episodekeeps you away from meeting up

with someone. Checking upon thoseimportant days and dates takessome of your precious time but

keeps you from rushing around atthe last minute, plus gives you that

peace of mind.Being in company and overhearingchatter pricks your ears. Taking in

what they have said puts a smile onyour face and little do they knowyou know the truth behind it all.

LEO [214TH July-23rd August]

Feeling more secure and confident inyour own abilities you step forwardmaking some alterations, which youfeel, are long overdue. Two or more

people consider another person’spoint of view and from that youmake a firm decision. With the

outlook positive you oversee a planof action not by choice but necessity.

With a busy schedule during themonth you manage to fulfil one

wish of yours and please others atthe same time. Going with the flow

mid month you put your feet upwith family or friends enjoying a fewhours of good old solid basic discus-sions of life in general. With plentyof good humour and laughter you

become pleased how time wasspent.

VIRGO [24TH August-23rd

September]By distancing yourself a little from

those who take your time andenergy you recharge your batteries

quickly and soon get down toimportant business. By not Seeing

Eye to eye with those you love someconcessions are made to find a

happy outcome for those involved.Any unexpected visits from family

around the 11th to the 26th ofFebruary make a pleasant change tothe humdrum of routine, which hastaken so much of your spare time.Planning ahead from the ideas youhave had regarding how to spendspare time in the future keeps you

well occupied toward the end of themonth. Outings to the pictures or

the theatre as well as travelling longdistance are accommodated.

LIBRA[24TH September-22nd

October]Finding an alternative solution to

something that has been of concernto you relieves any pressure or

tension felt recently. Loved onesbecome supportive when you makeone decision to change certain plansand go more with what you know

best. Others welcome any ideasdrawn from present experiences and

are put into practice. Relying onforms of travel becomes a headachewhen either someone or the vehicleyou are using lets you down. For the

time it takes to correct matters allturns out well with nothing lost andthe episode put behind you. Happyhours spent with family away fromhome put an end to an uncertaintime. A good positive outlook for

the future.

SCORPIO [23RD October-22nd

November]With a new and exciting chapter inyour life about to open up for youFebruary becomes the start to newbeginnings. Being in demand proves

you have still got what it takesregarding both your professionaland social life. Taking new and

exciting ideas aside then puttingthem into practice confirms to otherswhat your capabilities are. Having a

certain amount of freedom toachieve your goals becomes

important and with some recogni-tion coming your way, the following

weeks are most welcoming.Standing your ground becomes easywhen the other person is well out of

order. You make your point andmove on. With romance in the air

the month becomes complete.

SAGITTARIUS [23RDNovember-22nd December]

In as much as you try, the monthseems a little tipsy curvy. As soon asyou work out why, the correction is

made and the rest of Februarybecomes calmer. By taking things in

your stride in the second week, many achievements come to light

around your working life. Travellingbecomes highlighted third week,

when against your will and with littleor no time to spare you help out ifand when. Taking no chances youkeep your cards close to your chestgiving nothing away. Needing sometime alone you make arrangementswhere you can reflect from the past

months experiences.

CAPRICORN [23RDDecember-20th January]

With added responsibilities comingyour way you organise the month toyour liking. With others in mind and

with a little help and support youaccomplish and complete somethingyou feel has been neglected in your

home. Taking a new course of actionyou collect information and books, which are relevant to certain plansfor later in the year. A gathering offriends helps you see clearly what isachievable now and in the future.

Muck and mess may well be on theway for many. Building alterationswithin or outside the home is likely

to occur any time. Organisationbecomes the key to success. Plans to

make anniversaries or eventsmemorable you enjoy the planning.

AQUARIUS [21ST January-19th February]

Your intentions to keep busy andwell occupied pay off when feeling alittle under the weather beginning

of the month. The feelings soondisappear and you’re back on form.Guarding against any intruder you

reach out for information regardinga future event including someone

either in the family or a close friend.Taking time you check whetherthings have worked out well forthem. With lots to do this month

you make sure you balance areas ofyour life out so as not to burn yourcandle at both ends. Being wined

and dined on a special day releaseshappy and fulfilling emotions. On

Harpist Liath Hollins’ lifelong fascination with the harp has blossomed in to a successfulfreelance career. She specialises in traditional music from across the UK, combining harpand voice in beautiful combination.

Born in to a musical family, Liath plays a variety of instruments but was especially drawn tothe harp, choosing to study with some of the UK’s most respected traditional music special-ists - including Ashbourne native and renaissance specialist Jean Hudson, renownedScottish harper Charlotte Peterson and harping superstar Catriona MacKay - while develop-ing her own distinct style.

An engaging and accomplished performer, Liath ismuch in demand at folk venues and this year completeda season of solo concerts at the Buxton Festival Fringe,spell-binding audiences with her own arrangements.

Originally from South Wales, Kathryn Lewis grew upsurrounded by harps and harpists. Always a keenmusician, Kathryn’s harp journey began at the age of 12when she was invited to take her compositions to beplayed by the head of harp studies at the Royal WelshCollege of Music and Drama.

Kathryn’s harp education has been broad and varied:she’s studied authentic Irish Baroque with AndrewLawrence-King; jazz-age gems with the Warldorf-Astoria’s resident harpist Ray Pool; traditional Scottishmusic with Anne Macdiarmid and Isobel Mieras andtraditional Welsh music with some of Wales’ mostaccomplished musicians.

Kathryn’s particular vice is stealing music from otherinstruments’ repertoires and creating a new perspectivefor them on the harp.

Kathryn’s busy freelance career takes her all overEurope and she has performed as a guest artist withorchestras, as a soloist at festivals and has worked aconsultant with harp-makers in Wales. She has complet-ed residencies in stately homes and hotels, including theScandic Luosto, 80km above the Arctic Circle!
