Brrrrrr! IT’S COLD! “Well, it is Winter and

may I take thisopportunity to wishyou all a Happy andHealthy New Year.

As regular readers ofBreeze you know I putgreat emphasis onprotecting ourselvesby being observantahead of the game.

By that I mean, don’twait until somethinggoes wrong beforeaddressing the problem.

Of course, my maininterest is health and we all need to pay attention to the signs andsymptoms our bodies use to make us aware of problems. Speci#cally, let’s look at our feet! We all know that it takes very little to upsetthem, chilblains, corns, verrucae, fungal nails and hard skin.

Even if it simply a case of nails being too long, pressure exerted ontoes by shoes and even slippers can be really uncomfortable.

All this boils down to the usual theme, prevention is always, alwaysbetter than cure. Take time to really look at your feet and be aware ofany red marks that indicate pressure points.

Take time (only a few minutes) to cream your feet on rising in themorning and just before you get into bed. If you persevere with thissimple regime, you will be astonished by the massive improvementyou see and feel. Also, by doing this, you will get an early warning ofproblem areas that may be appearing”.Call Marion to make an appointment – 0115 939 3662

breezegardeningKeeping our hobby enjoyable this winter withlow cost frames & what to use them for.

With still quite some way to go yet before the weather naturallywarms the most obvious aspect to look at is how we can growplants from seed and take them on to mature in the milder springand early summertime.

This is an obvious progression as we have already previouslymentioned saving on your summer bedding plants by growingfrom seed - much cheaper than buying fully grown if you want lotsof colour later in the year. But that is for a future issue. In themeantime we can grow other plants under cover.

Let’s take a look at the two most basic fundamentals of plantgrowth in our cold winter climate:Shelter, Heating

Shelter from the stormIf you opt to do nothing else but build orbuy some sort of shelter you will alreadysave yourself from withered plants inmany cases (due to the cold exposure). Avery basic but e!ective shelter can bemade from a simple lightweight woodenframe (pictured) using two layers ofcommonly available garden $eecepulled over the top and stapled on theinside - neat and it works! Just lift o! totend to plants when needed. Can be usedto help overwinter succulents such as Aloe Vera but many plants willthrive under one of these so you can get them back out again in thespring.

A ‘twin wall’ polycarbonate (sheeting with two layers) covered coldframe or greenhouse will do much more to keep most plants fromdying o! in the winter. They o!er an expanded growing season byholding o! the wind chill and also keeping a minimum amount ofresidual warmth in at night or on cold days. Unheated they won’t feel‘warm’ as such but will make the di!erence in many cases as towhether a plant can survive. Certainly, frost damage should not be aproblem in most normal UK winters (the severe one we had a fewyears ago was exceptional and would mean supplementary heatingof some kind though).

What size of shelter do you need? It’s an obvious question and it willbe dictated largely by two factors: Garden size, Budget

If funds are limited then rest assured a decent sized lean to will notcost a fortune - you can use a wall against the house as a support andeven build up to it (if you don’t intend moving your shelter) usingsomething like 25mm square treated timber.

All you need to do is erect a 2meter wide by 1meter deep base andbuild up from this to form the height you require - usually around1.5meters high.

What you should end up with is abasic frame, rectangular at its baseand coming up to about just belowchest height. The polycarbonate sheets are

simply cut to #t each side andattached using standard #tting pinswhich don’t damage thepolycarbonate but hold it securely tothe wooden frame. They are light soyou can use light gauge timber aswell.if you cover all surfaces except the

front you can then decide to eithermake a pair of small doors and coverthem with polycarbonate sheeting,or you could just attach heavy dutypolythene sheeting to the front byfastening a batten to the top of theframe and clamping the sheet under

it (this stops it tearing in the wind). Secure the front down whenyou ‘close’ the frame up by clamping the bottom of the sheetbetween two pieces of your treated timber - the weight will keepthings in place. Lift the sheet up and rest it on top when you needaccess - simple!

You can #t simple shelves on the inside as needed and removethem during the growing season to accommodate di!erent plants

such as tomatoes etc.All these materials are available from any good DIY supplier and

don’t require advanced joinery skills or expensive tools. You can ofcourse buy one at really modest cost these days.

Warm frontThen we come to heating: there’s really only one contender here for

cost e!ectiveness and that is the standard garden para"n heater.Keep any heater such as this away from the sides and above the heatsource as it would be a #re risk. The proper garden heaters aredesigned to be safe though so do look at purchasing the correct type.A small one would heat the type of modest frame described abovequite easily and enable you to get going with starting plants o! now, ready for the spring. They use so little para"n that you can keeptopping them up and enjoy the thought that it’s not hitting yourelectricity bill!

A small electric heater on a thermostat set to ‘frost’ will not set youback much either though - it all depends how much warmth youneed for the plants you are growing.

With these two basic components now at your disposal you canoverwinter argyranthemums, tender perennials and even citrusplants as well grow your upcoming crops.

Easy to make shelters - this one usesfleece stapled over a simple frame.

breeze pets corner Just how much noise can a group of children make when given encouragement?Hearing Dogs for Deaf People want you to help them find out by raisingsponsorship for some sort of noise related event.

Hearing dogs alert their deaf recipients to those everyday sounds we takefor granted such as the alarm clock, door bell or baby cry, and dangersignals such as the smoke alarm as well as giving greaterindependence, con#dence and companionship.

In 2008, Hearing Dogs began a ground breaking project todetermine if deaf children could bene#t from the profoundly life-changing experience that a hearing dog can bring. It was well

documented that for an adult a hearing dog can improve con#dence, reliefthe stress, isolation and anxiety that deafness causes. Could a hearing dog dothe same for a deaf eight year old child? The answer was a very positive ‘YES’.

Now we all know that children love nothing more than to make a great dealof noise, especially if they know it will annoy the grown-ups and to capitaliseon this, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People are inviting groups of children toorganise an event called ‘Let’s hear it for deaf children’ to raise funds to trainmore puppies as hearing dogs for children.

The idea is for the children to be sponsored to make noise, preferably with somesort of ‘doggy’ theme like singing ‘How much is that doggy in the window’ whileaccompanying themselves with home-made musical instruments such as dustbin lidcymbals, old pots and pans or anything else that will add to the cacophony. WithChristmas approaching, perhaps the noise could be singing Christmas carols or playinginstruments at a festive party. And of course while not all adults will sponsor children to make asmuch noise as possible, nearly everyone will pay them to stop!
