Tournament of Roses ParadeLouis Zemperini — Olympic runner, World

War II soldier and prisoner of war, inspirationalspeaker, subject of the current movieUnbroken — was chosen as the GrandMarshal of the 2015 Tournament of RosesParade as a shining exemplar of the Parade’stheme, Inspiring Stories.

Mr. Zemperini passed away on July 2,2014, shortly before the movie was released,but members of the Tournament of Rosesstrongly wished to move forward withrecognizing Mr. Zemperini and his life, told inthe book Unbroken: A World War II Story ofSurvival, Resilience, and Redemption byLaura Hillenbrand.

The University of Southern California (USC)was very special to Louis Zamperini. TheUniversity remains very special to his family.

To honor this great man and all he hasdone for the world, the Tournament of Roseshas arranged to have the USC MascotTraveler® participate in the New Year’s Dayactivities.

Hector Aguilar — Tommy Trojan at USCfootball games — will ride Traveler 7, anAndalusian that has been the University’sequine mascot for thirteen years.

In the honor position of the CaparisonHorse beside Traveler 7 wll be Traveler 9, anineteen-year-old Andalusian gelding.

One of the oldest and most evocative ofmilitary traditions in a full honor funeral is thatof the riderless, caparisoned horse. The horseis led behind the caisson wearing an emptysaddle with the rider’s boots reversed in thestirrups, indicating the warrior will never rideagain.

Beside the riderless horse will be anactive-duty soldier in uniform to recognize theservice of Louis Zamperini in the U.S. Army.

The Caparison Horse group will precedethe family of Louis Zamperini in the RoseParade. Mr. Zamperini’s children and theirspouses will ride in a beautiful 1936 PackardStandard Eight shown in the photo below.

This chic vehicle has a very interestinghistory, as fewer than ten of them wereproduced.

This particular vehicle was exported toRussia in the 1930s as a gift to Joseph Stalin.

Provided from the collection of theAutomobile Driving Museum in El Segundo,California, the vehicle is elegantly decoratedby Florists Transworld Delivery (FTD) .

A crowd favorite returns — the skies overPasadena never feel so safe as when the B-2Spirit stealth bomber flies the Tournament ofRoses parade route, air power in its purestand most elegant form. Offering somevintage color, membersof the Los AngelesCounty FireDepartment will ride instyle aboard horse-drawn Steam FireEngine 226 wearingFirefighter "Class A"Dress Uniform.

The two teams in this year’s Rose Bowl —the University of Oregon Ducks and FloridaState’s Seminoles — will of course each berepresented by a float and their marchingbands.

This year’s class of Rose Bowl Game Hallof Fame Inductees will ride down ColoradoBlvd. in a sharp, fully restored 1955 CadillacSeries 62 convertible, provided by GeoffAbadee. The inductees are Knute Rockne(represented by his grandson, Knute RockneIII), Dick Vermeil, and Ki-Jana Carter.

The 280-member Salvation ArmyTournament of Roses Band has beenmarching in the Parade for 95 years! These

sharply-dressed, big-hearted workers in theLord’s fields can befound wherever ahelping hand is needed— their work followingHurricane Katrina islegendary.

Another dynamitenon-profit is LionsClubs International,locally represented bytwo powerhouses inSeal Beach and BuenaPark. Watch for theirfloat!

Also strong in ourlocal communities is Rotary International,with Clubs in Cypress and Seal Beach/LosAlamitos. Each year, Rotary’s high school KeyClubs help decorate the organization’s float,which this year emphasizes “Changing LivesThrough Clean Water.”

Two Cerritos boys have been cast in theupcoming production of the award-winningmusical Camelot at the Cerritos Center forthe Performing Arts (CCPA) on Friday, Jan. 9,at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 10, at 2 p.m. and8 p.m..

The production, about the legend of KingArthur, is recommended for ages 10 and older.

Eric Han, 12, and Amario McGuire, 9, willportray Tom ofWarwick, a young boydestined to be a knight.He wants to fight forwhat is right and givesKing Arthur hope forthe future.

Han, a Whitney High School seventh-grader, has been featured in local productionspf The Lorax and Stars on Ice. Han will appearin the Friday night Camelot performance.

A fourth-grader at Our Lady of Fatima,McGuire has appeared in StagelightProductions’ Peter Pan, Charlie Brown, Josephand the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat,and Wizard of Oz. McGuire performs in theSaturday matinee and evening show inCerritos.

The 2014-2015 national tour of Lerner &Loewe’s Camelot re-imagines the tale of KingArthur, Guenevere, and Lancelot. The new

production features the classics If

Ever I Would Leave You, The Simple Joys ofMaidenhood, and the title song Camelot.

Taught well by Merlin, King Arthur, withQueen Guenevere, rules the kingdom ofCamelot with new ideals, bringing peace to atroubled land.

With the addition of Sir Lancelot to theKnights of the Round Table, one of the mostfabled love triangles of all time ensues.

Mordred, the king’sillegitimate son,catches on and, seeinga kingdom in chaos,attempts to destroyCamelot.

The musicalgarnered four Tonys and three Oscars. Theoriginal 1960 production ran on Broadway for873 performances and spawned revivals,foreign productions, and the 1967 film.

The original cast album was a top-sellerfor 60 weeks in the United States.

Camelot, featuring lyrics and a book byAlan Jay Lerner and music by FrederickLoewe, is based on the adaptation from theT.H. White novel The Once and Future King.

Sunday Serenades: New Year ConcertHoly Cross Lutheran Church wishes you a

very Happy New Year and invites you to “Singin the New Year” on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2015 at 4p.m.

This Sunday Serenades Concert, in thestyle of Das Neujahrskonzert (The New YearConcert) held annually in Vienna and manyother towns in Austria, features Symphonyby the Sea along with Erin Wood, sopranoand Kevin Kyle Gino, tenor.

A chamber ensemblecomprised of RobinCecil (violin), EugeneMechtovich (viola),Maksim Velichkin(cello), and KathleenDyer (flute), Symphonyby the Sea performs awide variety of repertoirein Orange County andSouth Bay churches and

recital halls. Joining the Symphony by the Sea for

“Sing in the New Year” is widely acclaimedsoprano Erin Wood.

Ms. Wood has portrayed Amelia in UnBallo in Maschera by Giuseppe Verdi,produced by the San Francisco Opera; andLisa in The Queen of Spades, an opera byPyotr Tchaikovsky based on a story by

Alexander Pushkin.Ms. Wood has also performed as

Sieglinde, Ortlinde, Gutrune and the ThirdNorn in the Wagner Ring Cycle for the LyricOpera of Chicago.

She proudly joined the roster of theMetropolitan Opera in 2004. Recentengagements include the Verdi Requiem withthe London Symphony Chorus and concertsin Anchorage, Macon, Redlands, SantaMonica and San Bernadino.

Joining Ms. Wood in the “Brindisi“ from LaTraviata by Verdi is tenor Kevin Kyle Gino.

Mr. Gino, the recipient of ChapmanUniversity’s Nancy Bramlage Award in Operaand the winner of the Schloss MirabellCompetition in Salzburg, Austria, is noted forhis sensitive interpretations throughout hisrepertoire,

He is currently pursuing graduate studiesat the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.

Their recital program includes pieces byboth Johann Strauss Sr. and Jr. plus operaexcerpts from Tosca, La Traviata, and more.

As is the Austrian tradition, the concertends with the Radetzky March, composed byJohann Strauss Sr. in 1848. An audienceparticipation piece, guests clap along underthe conductor’s direction.

The suggested donation for tickets is$10.00 for seniors 55+ and students and$15.00 for adults.

Tickets are available in the church officefrom 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Fridayand at the door.

Written by a man who could express deepemotions with the sweetest singing musicallines, Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto isexpressed by Augustin Hadelich, praised forhis poetic sensitivity and gorgeous tone,during Pacific Symphony’s first concert of thenew year.

A star of his generation, Hadelich wasfeatured on the cover of the May 2014 issue ofStrings Magazine and is making aninternational presence across North America,Europe and Asia this season.

“The essence of Hadelich’s playing isbeauty...revealing something from a planebeyond ours,” says the Washington Post

The Symphony, led by guest conductorLeo Hussain, also performs Jean Sibelius’Symphony No. 2 in D Major, a piece of Nordiccharm full of joyful energy.

Requiem by Toru Takemitsu (1930-1996)opens the program with an innovative blendof Western and Eastern musical styles.

Tchaikovsky’s Concerto in D Major makesfor a luminous centerpiece with its gracefullyricism, contrasting bright and dark melodiesand exuberant energy. This excitement wasfound in the music, but also in the composerhimself. In fact, Tchaikovsky was so eager towrite a violin concerto that he startedcomposing it before he had finished hisgreatest opera,Eugene Onegin.

Although itsdedicatee, the greatviolinist LeopoldAuer, firstpronounced theconcerto“unplayable,” it has

since become one of the most beloved andprogrammed solo violin works in therepertoire.

Complimenting this classic is Sibelius’joyful Symphony No. 2, a piece that somebelieve reflects the political state of thecomposer’s homeland. If this is the case, theSymphony of Independence depicts Finland’sfight for cultural liberation from Russia. Abright and optimistic beginning can be heardas the people of Finland hope for theirfreedom. The resistance and suffering underforeign dominion is reflected in the darkersecond movement. A triumphant finaledescribes the eventual emergence of Finlandas a free nation.

The performance opens with Requiem, aunique musical compilation by Japanesecomposer Takemitsu, a self-taught composerwho discovered Western music at age 14 whileliving in a shelter in the mountains west ofTokyo during World War II. He wrote morethan 180 concert pieces as well as scores forsuch Japanese films as Ran, Rising Sun, andHarakiri. The piece combines the naturalismof Japanese culture with the urbansophistication of globalized countries.

The Symphony’s Classical series is madepossible by the Hal and Jeanette SegerstromFamily Foundation, with additional supportfrom Mercedes-Benz, the official vehicle; the

American Ballet Theatre returns toSegerstrom Center premiering an all-newproduction of the classic ballet The SleepingBeauty as choreographed by Artist inResidence Alexei Ratmansky. ABT’s returnto Orange County from March 3 – 8 marksthe company’s 23rd visit to the Center.Pacific Symphony will perform the belovedscore by Tchaikovsky. Sets and costumesare by Tony Award®-winning designerRichard Hudson. The production will receiveits New York premiere during ABT’s 2015spring season, certain to be acornerstone during the Company’scelebratory 75th anniversary year atthe Metropolitan Opera House. Thisversion of The Sleeping Beauty isthe Company’s fourth production ofthe ballet and marks Ratmansky’seleventh work for ABT.

“I have long wanted tochoreograph a version of TheSleeping Beauty,” said Ratmansky.“Tchaikovsky’s complex score andPetipa’s choreography represent thehighest achievement of Russianclassical art. It symbolizes theharmony and magic of classical

dance for me.”Hudson’s designs will be based on the

historic work of Léon Bakst, who created aseminal version of The Sleeping Beauty forSerge Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes in 1921.
