Widely considered the greatest cellist alivetoday, yo-yo Ma makes a special OrangeCounty appearance to honor Music DirectorCarl St.Clair’s 25th anniversary season withPacific Symphony.

One of classical music’s true superstarsand an ambassador for the art form, Maperforms the passionate and ground-breakingCello Concerto by Antonin Dvořák. Filled withdramatic flair and romantic singing lines, theconcerto captures the human quality of thesolo instrument like none before it.

Led by St.Clair, the Symphony shines withanother virtuosic masterpiece as ModestMussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition opensthe concert. Arranged for orchestra byMaurice Ravel, the original fifteen-part pianowork was written both to create a musicalevocation of a series of paintings and tomemorialize the artist who painted them,Viktor Hartmann.

This special concert takes place onTuesday, May 5, at 8 p.m. in the Renée andHenry Segerstrom Concert Hall. A limitednumber of tickets are available starting at$200. For more information or to purchasetickets, visit PacificSymphony.org or call 714-755-5799.

Ma’s history with the Symphony datesback to his first performance with St.Clair in1995, when he also performed the DvořákConcerto. in 1996, he was featured on theSymphony’s CD release of Elliot Goldenthal’sFire Water Paper: A Vietnam Oratorio. He lastappeared with the Symphony for the worldpremiere of Ballad, Dance and Fantasy forCello and Orchestra by Chen yi during the2004 American Composers Festival.

“i am honored that so many of mymusical friends, such as yo-yo Ma, havechosen to be with us during this season,”says Maestro St.Clair. “it allows me an

opportunity to pay my appreciation to themfor all they have meant to me, PacificSymphony and to our audiences during mytenure as music director.”

Ma’s multi-faceted career testifies to hissearch for new ways to communicate withaudiences and to his desire for artistic growthand renewal. Whether performing works fromthe cello repertoire, coming together withcolleagues for chamber music, or exploringcultures and musical forms outside theWestern classical tradition, Ma strives to findconnections that stimulate the imagination.in 1998, Ma established Silkroad, a nonprofitorganization that seeks to create meaningfulchange at the intersection of the arts, education and business. Ma is recognized forhis strong commitment to educationalprograms, and has reached young audiencesthrough appearances on Arthur, MisterRogers’ Neighborhood, and Sesame Street.
