or twice a week or even once a month - it's entirely up to you. We’lltake the strain while you have some quality time with family andfriends. We are dedicated to creating tasty but healthy cuisine. We only use

high quality ingredients - organically farmed meat, dairy andvegetable products as well as locally sourced ingredients, wheneverpossible. We also limit the use of refined sugars, processed foods, saltand fat.

For us, using organic produce has re-awoken memories of howCaribbean food used to taste ‘back in the day’.

Our menu offers a varied selection of fish, meats and vegetarianoptions. We use produce which is available seasonally and so, someof our dishes will not be available all year round. For those of you withless carnivorous inclinations, we are particularly keen to support theglobal “Meatless Monday” campaign with our sumptuous vegetarianoptions available on Mondays. We will cook your meal from scratch on the day that you require it -

family who now supply us with the cleanest, tastiest wild mussels. Our self service luxury olive counter continues to please,

and now includes a section for quail and duck eggs. Now is the time for hearty winter veg, which we

buy directly from Nottingham farmers. Burstingwith flavour and goodness, no-one else canbeat us on freshness and quality, along witha vast choice to keep testing your culinaryskills. The Beeston Methodist Carol Choir was first formed during the 1870’s by members of the Methodistcongregation then worshipping in premises on Chapel Street. Theirobject was to raise money for a local charity called the BeestonBenevolent Society which helped the local “poor and needy”.

In the early days up to 1914, singing took place outside the homesof the chapel’s own members, in an area which ranged from thecentral parts of Beeston (around The City) through the newerdistricts by the railway, the Park district in Chilwell and as far asMeadow Lane. At this time the singing took place throughoutChristmas night until breakfast and the choir was made up of menonly!

During the First World War, many members were called-up to theforces and it was decided to invite ladies to join the Choir. Theyreadily agreed and so the Choir developed into one with four partsand mixed voices. The rapid expansion of Beeston during the period between the

wars made it impossible for the Choir to continue to sing to allChurch members, thus efforts had to be confined to the areas northof the High Road in Beeston and the Park districts of Chilwell. The Choir still goes out singing every year on Christmas Eve, butsince the late 1950s it has also been necessary to sing on one or twoevenings before Christmas in order to cover such a large area. Nor is it any longer socially acceptable for singing on the streets tocontinue late into the night, so singing now concludes around10pm.The amount of money raised by the Carol Choir has increased

steadily and now provides the Beeston Chilwell Road MethodistBenevolent Society with its only income. The Society (founded in1826) distributes money and gifts to the sick poor and needy of thearea irrespective of race, creed or sect and is still fulfilling a greatneed in the area.

The beauty of a greenhouse isthat we can grow nearly anytype of plants that we wouldlike, because all of these otherclimate variables can becontrolled. You can heat your greenhousenaturally with the sun or useartificial heat. In some casesyour night heat will be up to 10-20 degrees higher, using justthe free power of the sun.For those who think they

don’t have the space for agreenhouse there are a varietyof lean-to greenhouses thatcan fit in a tight space such as ayard or smaller garden. Like people, they also come in

many varieties and sizes so wetake a look and help youchoose just the right type foryou to keep happily gardeningthis winter.

Greenhouse frame materials

Wood: Experienced hobbygreenhouse owners oftenprefer a wooden frame and Ifyou are building your owngreenhouse or lean-to thenwood is also the natural choiceto work with and is strong ifchosen correctly so you can

use glass or plastic sheeting. The other benefit of wood is that when you

want to put shelves, hooks up etc it is asimple hammer job, not something you cando with an aluminium or galvanised steelframe.Aluminium or galvanised steel: Requires

virtually no maintenance and, like wood, cantake any covering you choose. The disadvantage of metal that heat and

cold conducts easily, so are more difficult toheat.Plastic: Only strong enough to be used with

lightweight plastic sheet coverings.Generally found in small structures likesportable and mini greenhouses, they canalso be prone to wind damage - especially ifnot secured properly.

Glass or plastic windows?

There are three common choices of coveringfor a home greenhouse: glass panes, polycarbonate sheets, or polythene plasticsheeting.

For most hobby gardeners, thechoice is likely to be between a glass, or apolycarbonate cover. Glass allows the mostlight to penetration but is such a goodconductor that heat and cold just passthrough. Also not so good if going to be placed near

trees, around kids playing ball or in aparticularly windy area etc. Polycarbonate sheets are lighter than glass

and far less prone to breakage. Sunlightpenetration is less than with a plain glasscover. However, as light diffuses through thesheets, plants are less likely to burn understrong sunlight (more useful in the springand summer). Single polycarbonate is asattractive as glass but the real value inpolycarbonate comes from the double ortriple thickness sheets which have an in-builtair space between each sheet and can save alot of money on heating costs.

Polythene sheets are the most likely to failon you under bad conditions such as heavysnow and usually found in smaller lean-to’sand cold frames. In summary: a wooden frame usingpolycarbonate sheeting units will probablygive the best insulation all round and becheaper to heat in the coldest part of winter.

Heating & lighting

There are several popular types ofgreenhouse heater:An electric heater is cheap to install, easily

moved, respond quickly to sudden changesin temperature. Always choose an electricheater designed specifically for greenhouses -household heaters are not safe in thegreenhouse.Get one with a thermostat and preferably

one you can switch the fan on or off for moreoptions on placement. Thermostatically controlled types only come

on when needed but if you are worried aboutthe cost of electrically heating yourgreenhouse then why not buy one of thosesmall plug in energy monitors? These arearound £5 - £7 and will track usage which youcan easily translate into ‘pounds shillings andpence’. This way you can see day by day howmuch your greenhouse is costing you, whichis quite reassuring. Alternatives if you have no electricity to your

greenhouse are propane gas heater orparaffin heating.

Gas probably the best option after electric. They can be bulky thoughand give off carbon monoxide. Condensation can also be a problem withthese heaters. For both reasons you need to make sure that propanegreenhouse heaters are only used with adequate ventilation. Paraffin heating is the simplest and cheapest way to heat a greenhouse

in a relatively mild winter climate for example if the outside temperaturedoes not fall below about -6C and the required greenhouse temperatureis no more than +5C. One paraffin heater will keep your greenhouse orlean-to free of frost and should run for about three days solid with asingle fill. When weighing up the economics and cost of greenhouse heaters you

may also look at soil-warming cables. These considerably reduce therequirement for greenhouse heaters. These are available from gardeningsupply outlets. There are also small heating ‘mats’ which go under a trayand heat just that one area - very quick and cheap to run.

LightingAs mentioned in our previous article, standard fluorescent tubes can

offer invaluable light for plants during the shorter days and they areeconomical to run - you only need to supply light to the plants you aregrowing so you can choose how little you want to use artificial lightingor how much depending on your space and ambition!Let us take a look at how we can use artificial light to grow some fresh

chillies as a beacon of warmth in the winter gloom:

Ward off the chill with fresh chilli peppersSimply plant your chilli pepper seeds straight into some normal multipurpose compost, ideal mixed with some vermiculite. Remember thatdifferent varieties take different times to germinate. If you are growinghabanero peppers for example you can expect them to take up to threeor four weeks to germinate, where as annum varieties such as cayennewill sprout much more quickly.Aim to space them about 5cms apart then lightly cover the seeds with

about 0.5cm of compost and spray the tray lightly with water. Check them every day and spray with a little water if they look a bit dry.

Aim to prevent the compost from drying out rather than keeping itwet.

The two main requirements the seed has at this beginning stage areheat and moisture. The optimum temperature for germination varies

from species to speciesbut is roughly in theregion of 70 degrees f.

Try and keep thetemperature of the seedsconstant by using a heated propagator mat under your seed trays orkeep them indoors in a warm cupboard until they have sprouted - thenuse your heated greenhouse or lean - to. The time taken for germination varies greatly between varieties. Some

between one to three weeks. Others such as Habenero may take up tosix weeks or longer.

Then they will require light. Depending on where you are and whichway your greenhouse is facing you may well have enough light to growthem on but if you don’t then you can use a cheap option which is asimple fluorescent tube light bought from any DIY store for around £20.

Purchase tubes that are referred to as ‘cool white’ as they are not thenlikely to give off too much heat and scorch any leaves.

Rig the lights up above your chilli seedlings, positioned between 5-25cm from the top of your plants, but using lightweight chains or thinrope so that you can adjust them higher as your plants grow. Use asimple timer switch so that the plants use daylight as long as possibleand then dial in the artificial light to make up to eighteen hours e.g awinter day gives us seven hours of daylight, you set the timer to delivereleven hours of artificial light during darkness. The end result will be lovely fresh chillies, bursting with goodness and

warmth for those lovely spicy winter warmers. You can, of course, growother plants using this basic method. Finally, by only heating the part of your greenhouse which you use at

any one time you save on energy use so partition off any section not inuse unless you have a small lean-to or cold frame.

There! - it need not be so expensive to set up a simple and smallgreenhouse or lean-to, with a small paraffin heater, and a mini strip light.Low cost, effective and which allows you to still enjoy tending to yourplants - even give you some ‘space’ from the indoors and a sense ofpurpose. In the meantime may we wish you a Merry Christmas and many happy

hours ‘playing’ in your greenhouse. Have fun and be merry!* Always consult a qualified electrician if you require any electrical work for

your greenhouse.

A dog is for life, not just for Christmas!

Every year around Christmas and shortly afterwards, Castlefield Kennels get a risein the number of stray dogs. Could you offer a home now for one of these dogs whichhave been with them for up to two months, and all need a permanent, forever home?

Many unclaimed dogs are often frightened, have been turned out on the street and do not understand what has happened tothem, which is why a new home, perhaps before Christmas, would be marvellous for them all.

However, Castlefield Kennels know taking on a new pet is a major decision, a lifetime commitment. So if you can afford the time for love, food, vet fees, worming, de-fleaing, annual vaccinations, then you are ready to take on arescued dog, and just maybe one of these would be for you.

Sarah encourages the children to enjoy all sorts of interestsranging from local clubs and sporting activities through tocinema trips, days out and family holidays.
