A new look at the overfifties means changes tothe way we see ourselvesin our ‘golden years’.

With a new emphasis on maintaininghealth and wellbeing into our older

years and beyond, there is a growingmarket for the needs of a new and far more

active generation of people who are fifty years and over. From support in checking out local tradesmen to sporting and

leisure activities and a greater interest in self care, analysts widelyrecognise the sea change that has been occurring in the way we allsee getting older.

Indeed, getting ‘older’ is less seen as an obstacle and more viewed asan opportunity to get out there and try something new!

Ones older years are also often a time that we may treat ourselves tothose little luxuries that we went without whilst raising a family.

Perhaps it is a home revamp and decoration, or an educationalcourse you always promised yourself.Whatever the goal you have in mind here is a guide to help you

consider what is possible in these goldenyears.

It is also, of course, often a timefor reflection and preparationso that no one is left withdifficulties over importantmatters such as Willsand funeralarrangements.

Above all, it’s abouttaking control overour lives and trulyliving to the fullestand happiest...Here’s to you inyour ‘nifty fifties’....

Plan ahead and make the perfect choiceFuneral Pre-payment plans are becoming increasingly popular as people realise the benefits both for themselves and their loved ones.

However, choosing the right plan provider is important. Many plansare now taken out by post or even sold door-to-door, which can lead tofuture difficulties. Before committing yourself, check that your funeral can be carried out

by the funeral home of your choice – many plans sold by charities orother third party agents are linked to a particular funeral group, whichmay not be your preferred choice, or even have a branch in your area.

Check also that the plan includes everything you need – many plansinclude only basic cremation fees, meaning that a Service in Church orburial of cremated remains would lead to additional charges. Finally, check that the administration fees are identifiable – some plans

pay high commission levels to the plan seller, so only a proportion ofyour money is invested towards your funeral.

“With almost 20 years’ experience with Perfect Choice Funeral Plans,we at the Eastwood Funeral Partnership arealways happy to give advice to anyonethinking of taking out a funeral plan, orconcerned that an existing plandoesn’t fit their needs”.

DIY Wills Tips and Traps

People writing their own Wills maythink they are saving money, butthey risk leaving their beneficiariesunwelcome bills later on.

Most of us know we ought to makea Will, but some are unwilling to payprofessionals to help because theythink “it will cost too much”.Some do nothing and will die

intestate, whilst others buy a Will form at the Post Office. If you aren’t qualified to draft a Will, be aware that lots can go wrong. Recent cases we’ve seen include someone “signing” a Will on behalf of a

physically incapable testator; doubts as to whether the house has been lefton trust; and gifts where the amounts were unclear.

If a Will is badly drafted, its gifts can fail or the Will be void. Either way, your estate doesn’t pass as you intended. The problems will come to lightonly after you die. Lawyers have to sort out the mess, which can take agesand cost far more than the cost of getting your solicitor to make the Will inthe first place.

It doesn’t cost a fortune to get your Will done properly. It won’t be moneyyou’ll ever need for yourself. Think of it as a first instalment of what you’releaving your chosen beneficiaries. They really won’t mind if it saves thema small fortune in fees, time and worry later on. For help in writing wills and much more, contact Rothera Dowson

It shows in your faceYou heard it before and I say it again ‘if your feet hurt it shows in yourface’. Even in mid Summer, it’s not too early to start getting yourself in

tip-top condition. Observe and listen to your body.If you don’t put petrol in the car, it will simply shut down. The human body responds similarly, mainly affecting the extremities,

toe nails and finger nails. So what better time to begin your newregime? If you are suffering cracked, split, flaking or chipping nails simply won’t

grow, they may well be suffering from starvation! Start today! Wear gloves for household chores, especially when using

detergents that rob natural oils. Twice a day if you can, rub cuticlecream well in, then gently push back the cuticles. This is a great way ofclearing up those ragged bits of skin around the nails by providingthem with nourishing oils.

Apply rich hand and foot cream using what’s left with a dab for yourelbows. Make it a regular discipline and within a few days, you cancongratulate yourself on a noticeable improvement.

Check your dietary intake which should include plenty of fruit, oily fishand vegetables. Perhaps a multi vitamin boost is appropriate - youcould check this out with your GP, especially if you are takingother medicines.Call 0115 939 3662 and book your appointment now!

Local Notts residentcelebrates 15 years ofvolunteering at ChildLine

Gillian Young remembers well her first shift atChildLine Nottingham more than fifteen yearsago. It was a time when calls from children andyoung people were written long hand andnotes filed away, when volunteers onlyreceived calls from local children in the areaand when the internet was something only afew knew of.

Fast forward 15 years and ChildLine not only receives calls from young peoplein the Nottinghamshire area, but from all over the UK. Technology has alsoadvanced, with counsellors now trained in one-to-one online chats with children.

The ways in which children and young people contact ChildLine may havechanged but the issues young people contact the helpline about remain broadlythe same. “When I first joined ChildLine all those years ago, I was nervous about taking my

first few calls, but the training I had made me feel confident to be able listen tochildren and young people and to help them with their concerns. The supervisorsare always on hand to help and advise and we always have time for a teambriefing before and after shift which always helps.” ChildLine service manager, Gaynor Birnie, is grateful to Gillian for dedicating so

much of her time to helping children and young people. Gaynor said: “I’d like tothank Gillian for volunteering for ChildLine for 15 years. It is a great achievementand we couldn’t keep ChildLine open for children without all of our volunteers’amazing commitment and dedication.” Gillian feels rewarded by helping children and young people with their problems

or concerns and encourages others to consider volunteering. She said: “Peopleshould think about volunteering at ChildLine as it’s a great way to meet newpeople, learn new skills and help and support many children and young peoplewho may not have anyone else to turn to. It can sometimes be a lifeline for manyyoung people.” For many children with a problem, ChildLine is the only place they feel they can

turn. Last year, ChildLine counsellors at the Nottingham base in Old Basfordcarried out over 22,000 counselling interactions with young people from acrossthe UK, either by phone or via its online service*. Since the service was launchedby Esther Rantzen 25 years ago, ChildLine has counselled almost 2.7 millionchildren across the UK.

The base in Nottingham currently has 125 volunteers but around 75 more areneeded to help them to answer more calls from children and young people.Volunteers are especially needed for weekend and evening shifts. Gaynor said: “More counselling volunteers are urgently required in Nottingham

to help ChildLine reach more children and young people who are in need of helpand support. “

The Nottingham base is holding an open day event on 16 August foranyone interested in finding out more about volunteering. For detailsplease contact volunteer co-ordinator Cat Wynne on 0207 539 6016 or [email protected].

breezewhat’s on

The Henley Farrell Big Band was formed in March 1990 by Michelle Henleyand Tony Farrell who were seeking an opportunity to further develop theirlove of big band music and trumpet playing. Michelle and Tony had met whilstplaying in a local youth band and when big band leader Paul Du Cane wasdisbanding his group he kindly donated half of his music library to the pairwho used this as a platform to start their own big band.Rehearsal premises were found, musician friends were eager to play, newarrangements were added and PA equipment was acquired. Eventually a fullbig band complement was achieved and The Henley Farrell Big Band gave its

first public appearance in 1991.

The line up of 4 Trumpets, 4 Trombones, 5 Saxes, Piano, Bass, Drums, singers and optional Guitar is in keeping with the traditional bands from theswing era. The band now plays a wide range of music for all types of eventsincluding conferences, weddings, 40's theme nights, jazz concerts, Rat Packnights etc. The band has appeared with some of UK 's top musicians includingAlan Barnes, Bruce Adams, Nathan Bray and has performed at many venuesacross the East Midlands and in recent years, as their fame has spread acrossthe country.

The Henley Farrell Big Band is non-profit making and also supports localcharities and worthwhile causes.

As our knowledge of gardening increases we will still find problems which look set todestroy our good work. This month we look atpests to help us treat and care for our plants.

Slugs and snails:Nearly all gardens suffer from slugs and snails and since they

damage a wide range of plants it is not surprising that they causemost consternation amongst gardeners. But how do you know if you‘ve been a victim of the plant eating typeof slug?

Here is what you will see: leaves eaten from the margin or holes (inlarger leaves). Young shoots/seedlings are often eaten rightdown to the stem - or even completely!

Root crops (such as potatos) can appearhollowed out. There are, of course, the usualslime trails left behind on plants, thesurface of soil and other surfaces wherethey have moved. How do we prevent this most

common of garden adversaries?

Prevention/treatment:• Improving drainage; and soil structure is important as slugs prefer

wet and lumpy ground.• Digging; rotavating and raking helps disturb slugs and their eggs

within the soil. It also conditions the soil to dry out on the surface, which slugs don’t like.

Well-prepared soil will enable seeds to get going and grow awaymore quickly, minimising slug or snail damage.

• Natural friends; There are many creatures that feed on slugs andsnails such as: frogs, toads, ground beetles, hedgehogs and manyspecies of birds. Why not make your garden a friendly place for thesebeneficial creatures? Prove a variety of wildlife habitats and nestingboxes, for example: log piles, fruiting shrubs, a pond and mulches. • Inspect vulnerable plants regularly; and remove any snails that are

seen - using rubber gloves can make this job just about bearable!Traps: Various designs are available for all areas of the garden, either

purchased or home made, free-standing or that can beburied in soil. All will require some form of bait beer or a

supplied attractant. Choose a shallow container, leaving a rim 2cm above soil level to discourage

beetles and other creatures from falling intohome-made buried traps.

Lure and destroy! Use roof tiles or halfgrapefruit skins. Place on the soil nearvulnerable plants to provide a shelter for theslugs and snails in the day. Inspectfrequently and remove any pests found inresidence. This method can be used to clearan area before planting by providing lettuce

leaves as bait under the traps.Barriers: These consist of either a physical

barrier or sensory repellent to deter slugs andsnails getting to your plants. There are many

types, either home-made or bought products areavailable:

• Bottle cloches; cut the bottom off a clear plastic bottle andpress it firmly into the soil around a vulnerable seedling/plant.

• Slug collars; plastic rings with a lip to. Makes life difficult for a slimycrossing!, Placed around individual plants e.g lettuce.• Grit/rough granules; mineral products that either form a sharp,

gritty repellent barrier or that suck the moisture from the slime thatslugs and snails exude.• Spray repellent; made from yucca plant extract, you this spray onto

surfaces and around plants. Needs renewing after heavy rain, butuseful in awkward corners as another tactic.• Copper tape/ring/impregnated mats; copper gives a natural electric

charge that repels the pest. The tape is wound around pots and legsof greenhouse staging. Mats can be used around plants or plantedthrough.

• Bran; slugs like to eat bran and it swells inside them, thus reducingtheir appetite for your plants.

OTHER COMMON PESTS:Vine weevil A beetle that attacks a wide range of plants, both indoors and outdoors. Containerplants especially vulnerable.Container plants, outdoors or under cover, are targets of the pesky vine weevil grubs.

Plants growing in the open ground are less susceptible, although the grubs can killstrawberries, primulas, polyanthus, Sedum, and Heuchera.

The adult beetles feed on the foliage of many herbaceous plants and shrubs, forexample Rhododendron, evergreen Euonymus, Hydrangea, Epimedium, Bergenia,Primula and strawberry.

Here is what you will see: Irregular-shaped notches in leaf margins during thesummer. The white legless grubs are plump and have light brown heads. They are upto 1cm long. They are often found among the roots. Plants wilt and die during autumnto spring if grubs have been busy devouring the roots.

Prevention/treatment:Trap; Adults can be trapped with sticky barriers, such as Agralan Insect

Barrier Glue, placed around pots or on greenhouse staging.Encourage natural enemies: as with slugs - encourage the same type ofwildlife.• Chemical control; Plants not used for food purposes and grown incontainers can be treated with acetamiprid (Scotts Bug Clear UltraVine Weevil Killer) or thiacloprid (Provado Vine Weevil Killer 2). Youcannot use these treatments with crops.

With vine weevil, gardeners have to keep up their guard becausestopping treatment after the apparent disappearance of the pest canallow numbers to build up again.

Powdery mildew Produces a white powdery coating on the surface of plant leaves and fruits.

Here is what you will see: Plants look distorted, unsightly andgrowth begins to falter. Plants can also commonly display darkbrown or bright yellow spots. It is lethal to plants if not treated, and affects both ornamental and horticultural (edible) plants).

Many garden plants can be susceptible to powdery mildew, including strawberries, apples, peaches, plums, gooseberries, rhododendrons, roses, honeysuckle, asters, peas, brassicas andcucumbers, melons and marrows, as well most ornamentalplants.

This disease is a type of fungi that produce a 'powdery' effecton the surfaces of plants.

Each species of powdery mildew has it’s own favoured plantthat it lives on and an attack on one species of plant willgenerally not spread to another, unrelated plant.

Prevention/treatment:Chemical control: Myclobutanil, Penconazole, Flutriafol Sulphuras a dust, or as a liquid spray.Other action; Prune out infected branches or shoots as soon assymptoms appear.Work slowly to avoid shaking spores on to healthy shoots - put

the diseased material into a container and then burn the infectedmaterial.

Because of their spores, powdery mildew can survive thewinter on infected material. Get rid of any sick-looking perennialsat autumn time. Clean up thoroughly in the greenhouse with agarden disinfectant.Prevention; Ensure plants have adequate water, container plantsespecially as they don’t have access to ground water.Apply organic matter in autumn and applying mulches in spring

to retain moisture.Don’t overcrowd plants and thin out crowded growth to give

good air circulation.Avoid giving susceptible plants too much nitrogen-rich fertiliser

because this encourages sappy growth and this is moresusceptible to fungi.

breeze what’s on The Beeston Wildlife Group is holdingits first indoor meeting of the seasonon Monday September 17th 2012 at the Trent Vale Infants School,Trent Road, Beeston Rylands NG91LP. 7.30pm £2.00 Adults, £1.00 Children.

The evening will have an illustrated talk by Nigel Slaterabout 'Extinctions, Re-introductions and Aliens'.

It tells the story about animals becoming extinct inBritain and how man has tried to re-introduce some ofthem back into the wild. “Sometimes we get it horribly wrong when we release

alien species that cause havoc amongst our nativewildlife. Some of the species looked at include: Wolf, GreySquirrel, Large Blue Butterfly, Rabbit and Japanese Knotweed. You will be amazed how many animals are notgenuine natives to Britain”.

Please contact Bill Wheatley for more details 0115 9250208.Everyone is welcome, refreshments are includedin the price, you are sure to have an informative and entertaining evening.

Finally it’s the summer, time for a break! It’s the summer holidays and many of us willbe looking forward to a well-deserved trip away. However, the experts at Churchcroft Vets arereminding everyone that just as we need toprepare ourselves for a holiday (sun screen, passport, good book to read), we also need toget everything in place for our pets. Dependingon what your best friend is doing whilst you areaway there are various areas to consider.

George at Churchcroft says: “If your pet istravelling too, you need to consider any specialneeds arising relating to the journey itself. And,since there are different problems around theworld (and even just around the U.K.), you need to cover for any localproblems you might encounter.

Disease prevention measures can include Vaccinations, Flea treatment,Worm control, Tick prevention and other steps to avoid exotic diseases thatmight be encountered. Depending on where your pet is going, the risks willvary and, since every animal is unique, the best solution for your pet variesaccording to their individual needs.Travel concerns to be avoided include travel sickness, stress and heat stroke

(which can be a major issue since pets can’t sweat to cool down). A long journey with a car-sick dog can be a traumatic ordeal for all concerned!

In addition, don’t forget to check that any documentation that might beneeded is up to date (e.g. Passport, Vaccination record card).

It’s terrible to experience that sinking feeling when you discover yourholiday is going to be delayed or cancelled because of a simpleadministrative oversight! Finally, if your pet takes regular medication or a particular food, you’ll need

to get in sufficient stocks to last you through the holiday period.”Don’t leave it to the last minute! Contact Churchcroft Vets on 0115 9224855 to ensure the best protection for your best friend so that you canboth have a relaxing holiday.

breeze what’s onErewash Musical Society perform ‘Chess’at Duchess Theatre,Chatsworth Centre,

Long Eaton 1st – 6th October. Following on from his West End success’, Lyricist Tim Rice teamed up with Abba’s BennyAndersson and Björn Ulvaeus to write the musical ‘Chess’. The show features some wonderful melodies which the cast of Erewash Musical Society are thoroughly enjoying learning, under the capable baton of Musical Director James Rayner.

Within the context of the Cold War struggle between the USA andRussia, the story involves a romantic triangle between two top Chessplayers and a woman who manages one and falls in love with theother. The show begins in Merano, Italy as the country welcomescompetitors to the World Chess tournament. First to arrive is thebrash American Freddie Trumper to be played (in his first principalrole for the society) by Phil Deakin. Accompanying Freddie is his as-sistant and girlfriend Florence, played by Lynette Stevenson (who pre-viously played the female lead in EMS’ NODA Award nominatedproduction of ‘Jekyll and Hyde’). Lynette is thrilled to be appearing inher favourite show and recreating the role originally played by Elaine

Paige. Florence soon meets and falls in love with the romanticRussian champion Anatoly Sergiseki (played by Grant Walker). Chess isalso Grant’s favourite show and he is looking forward to singing thehauntingly beautiful song ‘Anthem’.

As the Chess Tournament travels the world, the 2nd Act opens withFreddie enjoying the experiences in ‘One night in Bangkok’. Anatoly’s estranged wife Svetlana (played by Kellie Pearson) arrivesduring the pre-tournament press conference, further complicatingmatters. Svetlana sings the emotionally moving song ‘Someone Else’sStory’ and later duets with Florence in ‘I know him so well’, where thetwo women each contemplate their individual relationship with Ana-toly. Probably one of the best known songs from the show, ‘I knowhim so well’ was a chart hit for Elaine Paige and Barbara Dixon in 1985.

Keeping a sharp eye over the Chess game proceedings is the Arbiteror referee (played by Kevin Riley), while wheeler dealers AlexanderMolokov (played by Mike Seed) and Walter de Courcey (played byMartin Mould) play their own game by manipulating the various char-acters within the story, for propaganda purposes.

Fabulous singing, a Chessboard stage and filmed sequences meanthat ‘Chess’ will be a truly new and exciting experience for Long Eatonaudiences. Re-uniting the successful ‘Jekyll & Hyde’ Production teamconsisting of Producer Nigel Taylor, Musical Director James Raynerand Choreographer Laurie Trott, together with a chorus of singers anddancers, ‘Chess’ is sure to be a spectacle for both the eyes and ears, and a show not to be missed.

‘Chess’ will be performed at the Duchess Theatre, ChatsworthCentre, West Gate, Long Eaton on the evenings of Monday 1st – Saturday 6th October 2013 starting at 7:30pm and a matinee performance at 2:30pm on Saturday 6th October. Tickets can be purchased from Chatsworth Centre on Saturdaymornings, booked online at erewashmusicalsociety.co.uk or via the Box Office on 01332 875350.
