LET YOUR HOMEMAKE YOU MONEYSolar PV or ‘Photo Voltaic’ panels are

like little electricity generators on yourroof, they capture the sun light andturn it in to electricity which you canuse or sell back to the electricitycompany.

Feed in tariffs are payments of43.3p/KWh (index linked) or unit ofelectricity generated on your roof. Youare then free to use it cutting yourelectricity bill or sell it back to theelectricity company, so you are getting paid twice. This sounds too good to be true but the government have introduced

these measures in order to attract large numbers of people across thecountry to install their own generators (solar pv) and help them meettheir climate change targets. These payments are government guaranteed for the next twenty five

years.

• Start reducing your electricity bills immediately• Make you 43.3p per unit up to 3’400 Kwh (units) per year. *• The electricity you do not use goes into the national grid and you are paid approximately 3.1p per unit.• You also do not have to pay for electricity you have produced so

there is a saving of another £250 per year on your electricity bill.*• A total saving of up to £1’760 per year.*• A reduction of CO2 produced by this clean green solar system by

approximately 30 tonnes over 25 years.

*(Dependant on the size of system and orientation)

DON’T SHIVER THIS WINTER,PUT A BLANKET ON YOUR HOUSEWith the soaring cost of energy sapping more andmore of our available resources it makes sense toinvest in measures to help conserve heat and reducethe cost of staying warm.

And now under a new Government initiativerequiring the major energy suppliers to reduce levels of domestic CO2emissions, the cost to the householder, has just fallen through thefloor. It could even be free.

One of the most important measures we can take is to properlyinsulate the loft space since, according to estimates a whopping 25%of the heat generated in a house is lost straight through the roof whenadequate insulation is not fitted.Fortunately help is at hand for all households. Nottingham based

Framework UK in association with GSI Carbon Solutions is helping todeliver the latest government initiative to help reduce carbonemissions.By supplying and fitting loft insulation and arranging Cavity Wall

Insulation to meet the Carbon Emissions Reduction Target (CERT),Frameworks UK can access funding which is available for manyhouseholds to benefit from completely free supply and installation. Many others are eligible for huge discounts on materials (cheaperthan DIY) and free installation.Congratulations to the hundreds of satisfied customers who have

already taken up this remarkable free offer and now have fullyinsulated loft spaces.“Readers will probably be aware of the recent government decision

to axe funding for solar installations and in light of current policydecisions we recommend that you act quickly to take advantage ofthis opportunity whilst it lasts”.Don’t miss out on this remarkable opportunity for free insulation, contact David at Framework and arrange to get your share now.Tel: 07801 814 209

Last month we looked atways to deal with the onsetof Winter and creative ideasto battle back withsomething to enjoy andwork at even though manyplants (and some animals!)start the process of shuttingdown for next three to fourmonths.

Well here we are and havingenjoyed a lovely season ofunusually mild and benignweather we have every reasonto still expect the season tobite somewhat harder than ithas done so far.

Which leaves us with agreater reliance on either veryhardy plant varieties andgreenhouse cultivation whenit comes to growing anythingin the garden itself. It is possible to grow nearly all

types of plants during thisseason. Winter greenhousecrops are protected fromextreme weather in yourgreenhouse.

Whilst some tropical fruitscan be grown in winter theyrequire extreme heat all yearround - which is an extra

expense and not for the feinthearted!

This is the reason why greenhouse fruitsare more expensive during and just afterwinter. Most leafy and root vegetables will still do

well though, without too much heat if youtake proper care. Grow them in containersor raised grow beds. This reduces thetransfer of the cold from the ground andmakes it easier to move your crops iffreezing looks on the books (as it certainlydid last year with unheated greenhousesdropping down to minus eight on somenights!). As well as containers, some gardeners add

extra insulation to their greenhouse to helpprevent heat loss. Use plastic to surroundthe soil to help keep frost at bay. You canalso surround any vents with plasticsheeting to further reduce heat loss. Some of the plants that do very well in the

wintergreenhouse without costing a

fortune in heating are Kale, carrots, radish, lettuce, Swiss chard or any other plants thatare not susceptible to frost. A greenhouse winter vegetable garden can

keep the cold off the winter hardy cropsallowing a plentiful harvest even during thewinter - and a lovely way to ‘keep somethinggoing’ for these months.Whatever your choice of winter crops, you

will often need more water than usual asthere is no natural rainfall of course. Ensurethat your water level does not leave theroots clogged - just enough withoutdrowning them. The right amount of wateris just as important in the winter as it is inthe other seasons. There is one crop that can be started now

in an unheated greenhouse and which canalso be very educational too.Garlic is one of the few vegetables grown

today that almost never sets seed, so itactually increases by vegetativepropagation. Regular gardeners will befamiliar with the process, and it’s a greatway to teach the kids being not toodifficult a plant to start off and grow. You need to buy a bulb of what is referred

to as ‘seed garlic’ from a garden centre orsupplier, which is disease free and selectedfor good garden performance. Then yousplit this bulb into its individual cloves.During growth, each clove fattens anddivides under its soft and slightly paperylooking skin with tall leaves beingproduced at the same time. The leaves willeventually die back and the result is a newfat bulb of many cloves, which you can usein cooking and for many of the myriad usesthat garlic is put to today as the ‘wonderfood’ it has become! The process of growthcontinues - you just harvest as and when.

With a bit of planning, your wintergreenhouse can be a very enjoyable placeto spend some spare time with that feelingof being ‘semi outside’ when we are in thedarkest depths of winter but in the shelteredspace that the greenhouse is. Who knows, your efforts in the greenhouse could evenbecome a profitable enterprise for you!

No greenhouse? - read on!

But what if you don’t have a greenhouse?Well, another good way to keep yourgardening interests alive (and it’s good forkids to get involved with as well) is tocreate and maintain an indoors herbgarden. They smell lovely and really helpstave off the feeling that all is ‘dead’ inwinter. Some good choices to grow indoors in

the winter include rosemary, bay, oregano, marjoram, parsley, scented geranium, chives, mint, winter savoury and sage. Thebest way to start off your herbs is to eitherbuy plants or dig up and transplant themfrom your garden outside.

Any container with gooddrainage will suffice to plantinto, with Terra cotta pots anespecially good choice, since the clay allowsmoisture out so they‘breathe’. Use high quality pottingsoil to get healthy herbsgrowing nicely.Herbs love a sunny

window (don’t we all inWinter!) in which to bask inas much UV as they canpossible get in these shorterdays. Most herbs need atleast six hours' direct

sunlight, plus an additionalsix to eight hours of indirect light. You can supplement their needs with

artificial lights. Specific ones designed forthe purpose are available (aquarium shopsstock UV type lights actually so it may beworth enquiring there), but plainfluorescent lights will do the job, albeit notquite as effectively. Rotate your herbs every few days so that

each side gets adequate light.Herbs like daytime temperatures around

70 degrees Fahrenheit and night-timetemperatures closer to 55.Water your herbs every two to four days -

the soil should remain evenly damp butnot too wet.

Fertilise only sparingly. ‘Hungry’herbs tend to have more flavourful leaves.A single application of fertiliser or plantfood should be enough to get themthrough the winter.Remove any yellow leaves so that the

plant doesn't waste any energymaintaining them. For maximum flavour, do not allow herbs

to flower - pinch out any buds that show.Keep using your herbs regularly - this will

encourage your herbs to continue to growmore leaves, ensuring that you will have asupply of fresh herbs all through thewinter.Don’t be put off growing some herbs -

just give it a go - enjoy the process oftrying to tease the best out of them, whether with a bit of extra UV lightingfrom an old strip light (or maybe that oldaquarium light you never got round tothrowing away?) or just plain oldpositioning where the sun is best. So, as we settle in towards the winter

season and await the festive rush, let’scontinue onward with our journey andenjoy the hobby of gardening as a realantidote to all that darkness and cold -here’s to the Winter gardener, enjoy!

Is it time you replace your boiler? It doesn’t have to be in such a state that ithas ‘steam coming out of its ears’ as it struggles with the descending temperatures ofWinter to warrant a replacement - find outmore with BathTime, who have been installingboilers for over nine years. There is no set time as to how long your boiler may last asmany factors can weigh in to the equation from how often ithas been serviced to the basic robustness of the design. What you can be sure of though is that if your existing boiler is

more than around ten years old it will probably not be givingyou the best return in providing the most heat for the leastmoney. To put it simply, boilers have been getting far moreefficient over the past ten years.

Jon Malone, who runs BathTime on Wollaton Road in Beeston, has seen how much the trade has changed over the past nineyears he has been involved with installation.“I would say that the most important aspect of boiler

design today is the reliability factor. This is due to the vastimprovements there have been in newer technology whichincludes heat plate transfer and condensing heat scavengers” Explains Jon.

He adds that in working with the newer designs of boiler it isimportant to spot the pitfalls at installation and to check thatthe new unit will work reliably in what in many instances will bea system with older pipework.“We come across all circumstances and have built up a knowledge

basewhichhelps usassessandforestall any problems as we replacean old boiler with a brand new one”.

Part of that service is offering a freeMagna-Clean device which is installedat no extra cost to the customer. Onceinstalled this small piece of equipmentfilters out any harmful deposits which maybe dislodged during the time the heating system is on andpumping water around the pipes and radiators - it uses no extrapower and works 24/7 to keep your new boiler safe from theseharmful deposits. “We are proud of this free service as itenhances the quality of our boiler installations” adds Jon.

Katelyn Severn, 18,from Bramcote qualifiedfor the Royal Academyof Dance GeneeInternational BalletCompetition by passingher RAD Advanced 2examination withDistinction (81%) in July 2011. It was held in CapeTown, South Africa from29th September to 9thOctober 2011. Breeze finds out more...

The Genee competition bringstogether young ballet dancers(aged 15-19) to be coached andjudged by world-wide renownedchoreographers and balletcompany directors in a two-weekcompetition.  Candidates had tolearn two classical ballet variationsin advance of the competitionbut also were taught a completelynew commissioned dance in justfive days.  The competition prizesare awarded as Gold, Silver andBronze medals - if the standardsare achieved.

Katelyn was one of four UKentrants who all travelled fromScotland where they are trainingas part of their  BA degree coursein Classical Ballet.  Other entrantscame from the USA, Canada,Australia, Malaysia, Hong Kong,South Africa, Israel, China, Japan,Spain and Cyprus.  Theyperformed in a professionaltheatre, Artscape, in central CapeTown to packed audiences.  It isthe pinnacle of a young dancer'straining to be part of the Genee and winning recognition inthe competition will almost certainly lead to a professionalengagement in any international ballet company.

The Genee is known as 'the friendly competition' as allcandidates live together and train together for two weeksprior to the finalists being chosen.  Cape Town Tourism officekindly sponsored part of the competition and the candidateshad several cultural visits and opportunities to enjoy thecity. Those candidates who were semi-finalists (includingKatelyn) who did not make it to the final had a day off to sight-see.  They were taken to Table Mountain by cable-car (it stands1067 metres high) and some of them posed in their ballettutus at the edge of the mountain ridges to the delight ofpassing tourists. Cape Town City is lobbying to have TableMountain recognised as one of the New 7 Wonders of Natureand the attached pictures are being featured on their officialtourism website. Katelyn is the second dancer in line in the

black and white photo.  In the large group photo she is sittingin the forefront, wearing a beige tutu.

The competition results gave Bronze medals to two SouthAfrican candidates (one boy, one girl) and Silver medals to oneChinese and one Japanese girl and Silver also to a Chineseboy.  An Australian boy and a Canadian girl were offeredcontracts with Cape Town City ballet and the South Africanballet company.  No Gold medals were awarded this year.  The UK finalist did not get a medal, but performed with credit.

Katelyn thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience and gavea most professional set of performances. She continues to trainin Scotland and will be given a featured role in the balletschool's next production, 'Swan Lake'. She will be listing hersuccess on her CV when she graduates and starts looking forwork in a ballet company and it will certainly impressprospective future employers.

Breeze wishes her every success in the future.
