Personal Branding Definition:

Personal Branding as a science started far back in the history & the 1st company working in this field

started in 2001 – “REACH Co.” represented in Middle East by Persona International Co.

Strong Brands are known everywhere. So, what is BRANDING really?

There are some wrong conceptions about Personal Branding:

- “Branding is creating a false image” (X)

To preserve your brand, you must keep it a unique & true. Your external attitude must match

your inner self. Branding is not about a spin, hype or packaging. It’s about being true to yourself.

“The most exhausting thing you can be is inauthentic” … Anne Morrow Lindbergh

- “Personal Branding was created by Nike & Coke” (X)

Actually it was created by Mr. Miller’s Bakery. What branded his bakery shop was his warm

interpersonal skills with his clients & the relaxing environment of his shop.

Today everything is a brand! Consider these Brands:

Oprah Winfrey Humanitarian activities thru all her work

Bill Gates Microsoft

So, Personal Branding is actually a way to clarify & communicate to people what differentiate you than

others & makes you special. That’s how you land your dream job!!

WE DO NOT CREATE PERSONAL BRAND… WE ONLY UNCOVER iT!! It’s about identifying your own flavor.

Brands are “Authentic”

You can think of it as your “Reputation”

“Mirror “ How do we see ourselves & others! .... Noha El Attar –Cofounder & Partner Of Quttab

What’s your inner calling? What do you really love to do?

Is it “Helping Others”? Attracting attention? Feeling loved by people? Drawing?

How do we learn?

We learn thru 3 phases: Observation, skill acquisition & experimenting.

BRAND YOURSELF May 17, 2013

Think of yourself as a brand! Page 11 Documented by Amr Noaman

Phase 1: Observation

We focus on ourselves too much when we should focus more on others & deeply observe them inside.

Try more to understand before judging.

It’s how to see ourselves & others for what we really are, not what we want to see!

Phase 2: Skill Acquisition

Mirror Neurons in our brain we learn best thru imitation.

Phase 3: Experimenting

It’s Practice, exposure to critics, fear of disapproval, falling down & standing up again.

When entering a new place focus on the following:

1. What’s the norm of that place? What spins the wheel here?

2. How are the relationships doing here?

Experimenting is actually the skill of being inferior or amateur without fearing of failure. It’s how to let

go of being superior at everything. It’s being the little kids we once were, when we used to do get to

know the world around us by testing it & doing everything wrong & be happy about it!! ☺☺

It’s how to criticize yourself & observe what people say about you. It’s how you perceive failure as one

more step to success. The more you accept criticism, the more you’re stronger & more capable to

develop yourself.

We should keep our work colleagues or friends who point out our weakness points in a positive way.

We should find our Mentor.. Our Coach & only follow them in their strength points.

This doesn’t mean to accept being over criticized!! You should keep a distance from over criticism, set

limits around yourself, around your self confidence & always learn to be emotionally detached from

unfair & over criticism.

Panel Discussion ………………………………… Bassem Elhady , Amira Salah & Ahmed Abo ElSaoud

Speakers:

Amira Mostafa Salah – 2007 Graduate – Social Fruits & Kherna | Co-Founder

Social Fruits – We architect social platforms and then farm them into delicious fruits for the masses to

see, drool, taste, and then eat! We are experienced agile practitioners from Business, Technology and

Social backgrounds.

Kherna – It’s basically a facebook for NGOs. It’s an Online social networking platform for all for-good-

cause organizations to share their activities with the world and compete together by offering

transparent real-time information to attract the most donations from donors based on their perceived

credibility.

Ahmed Abo ElSaoud – 2009 Graduate – EED | Executive Chairman

– IEEE Tanta Student Branch | Co Founder

EED (Egyptian Engineering Day) is a very special national event that receives a very special

deliberation from the Egyptian Government, Academic Parties, Industry and Media with both local and

regional recognition. It's considered as the annual nexus for engineers in Egypt and an opportunity for

all engineering professionals to meet new associates in the field, share ideas, collaborate on projects

and learn something new. EED is where industry and university enter a win-win situation.

IEEE Tanta Student Branch (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers; read as I-Triple-E) is one of

branches representing IEEE in Tanta University through organizing regional events, educational

programs and competition. IEEE is a worldwide professional association headquartered in New York

City that is dedicated to advancing technological innovation and excellence. It has more than 425,000

members in more than 160 countries.

Bassem Elhady – 2010 Graduate – Kijamii | Founder & CEO

Questions:

Q1. Please tell us a little about your entrepreneur life!

Bassem – Facebook users in Egypt before Jan 25th revolution were 3.5 million, after they became.. 10.5

million!! Totally overwhelmed by the idea of being an Entrepreneur, I was jealous & inspired by TEDx

speakers. I was inspired & supported by “Enjaz” who conducted entrepreneur courses for poor schools

students in poor & ruler areas!! I wanted to help companies in Egypt get digitalized in terms of both

operating software & online front. That’s when I started Kijamii! Social Media revolves around story

telling. So, we created a story for us so that our clients would know that our concept of Digital media is

story telling.. In Swahili (African Tribes language), Kijamii means Social, this became our culture & what

we live for & we ask our clients to join our interactive social community! Our slogan is “E7na Beto3

ElSocial Media ☺”

Amira – Overwhelmed by charity & social work since my very early days in college, I was geared up by

extensive experiences in that field. I co-founded Social Fruits which mainly aims at helping NGOs thru

social media. Kherna was one of Social Fruits successful products by which we wanted to communicate

NGOs & charity activists using social media tools. Kherna aims to spread Charity everywhere & support

reach out to the small NGOs around the corner that probably no one really heard of!

Abo ElSaoud – Devastated by the huge numbers of graduation projects that Electrical & Electronic

Engineers in Egypt submits every year & yet they get left in the drawers & never comes to light! I co-

founded IEEE branch in Tanta University to help get those projects out to light thru organizing regional

events, educational programs & competitions. I joined EED since 2008 & I’m currently leading its 2013

event in coming 26-27th of August as Executive Chairman. EED aims at reaching out to all electrical &

electronic engineers under the supervision of I-triple-E to collect their graduation project. It’s an annual

summit that facilitates the opportunity for the best of the engineering graduation projects from all over

Egypt to be implemented.

Q2. What do you say about Personal Branding?

Bassem – As inspired by the book “Think & Grow Rich” for Napoleon Hill, Personal branding is the

process by which people & their careers become a brand. You don’t have to own your company to be an

entrepreneur; you can be one inside your company. That’s what Brand Managers are inside

multinational companies like Google. Personal branding is how to successfully present yourself. It’s what

makes you different & efficient. So, ask yourself if you like what you’re doing? Is it adding value to you

or to others? Is your team or company growing? You have to follow your passion & seize the

opportunities. Search for your mentor. Learn to be creative to convince others with yourself. I

remember here that one of my friends was so eager to get a training at a famous company that kept

refusing his CV, so he bought a nice gift box, placed the CV inside it & sent it to the attention of the CEO

of the company. The CEO was amazed by his creativity & eagerness & my friend got the training he

wanted ☺ Finally, don’t forget to celebrate your achievements!

Think of yourself as a brand!

Knowledge is Power. Identify your strengths & weaknesses. Work on your strengths & work on your

weaknesses or learn how to manage & avoid it so as not to become an obstacle to your goals.

Second: Your Me Inc.

Get to know your VPs. Vision & Purpose. And Set your Goals:

Vision is a long term. How you want the world to be in the far future?

Purpose is your role in making your vision a reality.

What is your purpose? Which actions verbs appeal to you that you use to introduce yourself? What are

your values & principles? What angers you? Do you currently act on these principles? Can you

remember at least 3 times when you felt proud?

What is your passion? Your driving interests? What’s the one thing that you can do all day all night

without feeling tired or bored instead you feel excited!

Set your goals. Goals must be SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant & Time frame specific)

“As long as you’re going to be thinking, you must think big” Donald Trump

Don’t set small goals. Set Big Goals. Write them down & read them everyday. Reading them

automatically activates your brain to focus on them.

Goals provides direction & steadiness to your personal brand!

Express “Become Visible & Clarify your brand to others”:

Who are your Target Audience? When you’re searching for a new job, who is the HR manager? Who is

the manager of the department you’re interested in? Get to know everything about them. What do they

do with their spare time? Their extracurricular activities. What do they like to read..etc

Who are your peers? You must standout from them & be unique. What do you offer? Don’t be “Me

too”. Eliminate the F word “Fine”. Be the Best, Be exceptional & Outstanding.

Be positive. Accentuate your strengths. Open to opportunities. Stay focused on positiveness. Don’t let

details drag you down!

Don’t be over visible. Have others speak for you (Testimonials, references & case studies) to gain

credibility.

Your Personal Online Identity ………………………………. by Mohamed El Shafie – HR Professional

Everything counts:

Everything in your CV counts, even the slightest detail. My personal experience taught me this!!

After my graduation, my CV was geared up with extensive training experiences & activities, so I was by

far better qualified then my peers. And, there was an opening for an HR position in a famous

multinational company, so I applied to the position with great confidence that this position is mine.

Normally, in big companies, you would receive a receipt confirmation email once you submit your CV to

the designated recruiting email, but I didn’t receive any. So, I kept sending my CV to the same email

numerous times. Finally, while I was with my friends in a cyber café I got an email from Mr. Steve B, the

HR Director Manager of that company. The email read the following:

My happiness was great that before even reading the rest of the email, I jumped out of my chair & kept

yelling with happiness & celebrating with my friends. Then after a while I calmed down & I returned to

my laptop to scroll down thru the email & read the rest of it….

At that point I was surrounded by my friends reading the email with me I’ll let you imagine what

happened but I was overwhelmed by the feeling that I want to disappear!!

After that I learned that I should focus on each slight detail in my CV & each & every piece of

information there is about me Online!

Dear Mohamed,

Congratulations!

I normally don’t reply to job applications but yours was one of a kind.

I’ve never seen anything like it before!!

I’ve noticed that you wrote your name in your CV as “mohamed el shafie”?!!

How come do you expect us to hire you when you lack the slightest respect of yourself to write

your own name in Capital Letters!!!

Regards,

Steve B – HR Managing Director

Celebrities & community figures always face cases of stolen online identities. A faker would fake a

facebook page for example for a certain community figure by putting his profile picture & posting some

of his recent statements, adding some of his publicly known friends & then he would start adding mass

numbers of public people, once he has over 200 subscribers or so, he would start miss-presenting &

falsifying the image & reputation of that community figure by posting fake extreme opinions &

comments on his page. Those cases led to the emerging of agencies & firms who specialize in the

protection of the online identity. Firms like “Reputation Defender” RD™. Of course those firms can’t

prevent people from faking your identity but what they do is that they track all the faked opinions,

comments & news about you online & they counter attack those ones by posting the correct opinions &

news at the same time with larger numbers so that anyone searching for such news or opinions would

only get the correct ones at the very start of the search results.

way that you don’t.

- In some cultures, directly facing the other person when talking to them may be interpreted as

an intimidation or confrontation.

Your business card

number & what you do.

Why do we need networking?
