How long have you lived here on SZR?Only one year, I was living in Burjuman Residences before but I moved here because the rent is so competitively priced – I’m paying half what I was before for a similar sized apartment. I really like living in big houses, I was born and raised in Dubai in a big villa, but once I established myself (I’ve been in the fashion industry for seven years now) I moved out.

What kind of residents does this area seem to attract?The people here are mostly from the UAE and Middle East. Most people also work in DIFC and are single. There aren’t too many families in this particular tower.

What’s the best thing about living here?The space and the fact that it’s quiet and very chilled out. Sheikh Zayed Road is right downstairs, but you cannot hear it at all. Also, although I don’t have curtains, no one can see in to my flat due to the dark windows, so it’s very open but very private.

Where do you tend to go to shop or get a bite to eat nearby? I go to Okku and Zuma for fresh, sophisticated Japanese food and Caramel for international food. These are the threespots I hang out in. For Shisha I go to Mezza House in Bur Dubai. For shopping I go to The Dubai Mall or to BurJuman shopping centre. I like to shop in quiet places, so BurJuman is ideal. Plus, they

have some great coffee shops there which you can relax in after a shopping trip.

What are the other facilities like here?In the building we have a gym, a pool and a spa with a steam room, sauna, cold pool and hot pool. Plus, there are plenty of taxis downstairs and the Metro close by. There are also schools nearby, including Wellington and the Canada International College. Jumeirah is 10 minutes away, as is Downtown and the airport.

How did you come up with the idea for your apartment’s interiors?My signature style is actually black and white – it’s how I decorated my boutique and my previous apartment – but, this time, I decided to go for something different. My sister is an interior designer and she advised me to come up with a colour. Blue has never been my favourite colour, neither has beige, but they actually work really well in the home. I then made the chandeliers by hand. To get everything to match wasn’t easy; I imported pieces from Laura Ashley and collected pieces on my travels, including cow-skin rugs from South Africa which are in my dressing room and reading room. I also got cushions from Fendi, Marina Exotica and THE One in Dubai. My wallpaper was much trickier to find. I looked everywhere for the right one and was so disappointed and fed up about not finding what I wanted. Then, I was in Bur Dubai and saw a small boutique with an Iranian owner. I looked at his catalogues and got so excited because it was exactly what I was looking for. I asked him to come to my home the same day and decorate. The overall result is a really simple and classic design.

What’s your favourite piece at home?I love everything but if I had to choose it would be the pictures of my niece and my piano. I play regularly and, while I can

change the furniture, I can not get away from the piano. I love classical, rock and roll, Latin and Iranian music but really hate house music – it’s too noisy for me. I like my space to think and be alone. Sometimes I don’t want to be disturbed so I have a room in my apartment where I just sit and look at the city.

What’s the secret to good design?This is something you’re born with, but, this particular look was an experiment that came out really well. I think it is important with any design to add personal touches; I did this with my chandeliers. I really like plain crystal, so I bought the frames and decorated them with crystals I had imported, made by a Czechoslovakian designer. I designed these chandeliers in the same way I design dresses; using beading techniques.

Can you share your top interior tips?Don’t rush; interiors take time and cannot be done overnight. Also, travel around for pieces, don’t settle on the first thing you see. Think about colour, too. Of course, you can speak to a designer, but remember you have to live in the space so it has to suit your needs and you have to be comfortable. Lastly, everyone can design, even if they think they don’t know how, so don’t be shy.

Would you ever buy a house in Dubai?No, I’m not interested in property, I’m a designer. I’m here because my family is here but I do want to live in another country at some point, to get the experience of another culture.

What’s the trick to making a Dubai apartment feel like a home?I’m frugal in certain areas of my life, but not when it comes to my home. Here you invest in your sleep, in your comfort, and your relaxation. This is where I create new designs, and I would do anything for my own comfort. That’s the secret for me.

Flanked by facilities and amenities, Sheikh Zayed Road sits on the fringe of major areas, including DIFC, Jumeirah and Bur Dubai. While it’s not possible for expatriates to buy property along the multi-lane-highway, lessees will have their pick of competitively priced, spacious apartments in a variety of modern skyscrapers, the 22-floor-high Safa Tower among them, which boasts sweeping views of coast and city. The building also contains the Zahra Private Medical Centre (alzahra.com), the only residential-based hospital in Dubai. Further south, you’ll find numerous housing options, such as the post-modern, aluminum and glass Millennium Tower, where would-be residents can take their pick of some 407 luxury three and four bedroom apartments, and share a 25-metre pool, gym, squash courts and ten-storey car park.

Shopping and a bite

The sky’s the limit when it comes to shopping and dining venues within SZR’s reach. Most Dubai schools can be accessed within a 10 to 30 minute drive from SZR, with the excellent GEMS Wellington International School (gemseducation.com) the closest. Head north of SZR and you’ll find The Millennium School (millenniumschool.com) and the Sheffield Private School, which caters to primary and secondary international students and offers excellent sports facilities, from volleyball and basketball courts to an astro-turf football pitch. Alternatively, Al Diyafah school (diyafah.com), caters for pupils up to sixth form level.

Rid stubboRn stains

Tea If there’s a spillage on your carpet, try and remove it with a cold water cloth. If it’s made its way on to fabric, though, use hot water to rinse it out. After, use either carpet shampoo or detergent on the fabric and then dab it dry with an absorbent cloth or towel.

BlackcurranT juice As soon as you spot the spillage, get dabbing! Rid as much as you can using a paper towel, but, if it’s on fabric, rinse the stained area immediately using a cold, damp cloth, then add soda solution and put the fabric in the washing machine on the highest temperature it can take. Still a stain there? Try dabbing it with a hydrogen peroxide solution.

FaT and grease If the mess is on your carpet, cover the stain with a paper towel, then grab an iron, set it on a cool temperature and run it over towel: the paper should absorb the grease. If you’ve spilt it on upholstery, though, try talcum powder. Let the powder absorb the grease, wait for it to dry, and then vacuum it up. As a last resort, try methylated spirits.

Pen If dreaded ink has made its way on to your clothes, try removing it using hydrogen peroxide. Don’t have the chemical to hand? Try shaving foam or hairspray. After, machine-wash the garment as usual and it should come out looking good as new.

chewing gum Firstly, get some ice and freeze the culprit solid, then handpick off as much of the offending lump as you can. If there’s still residue, turn the heat up instead, by rubbing Deep Heat on the gum and blasting it with a hairdryer. When the gum has gone, wash the Deep Heat off with soapy water.

How does cleaning homes differ in dubai to the rest of the world? A big problem here is poor construction. Windows are not tightly sealed and there’s usually dust everywhere. Water pipes leak and damage floors, and parquet floors are often damaged because they are cleaned using the wrong chemicals. Ongoing construction also creates a lot of dust and dirt and, of course, living in the desert is a major factor as sand literally gets everywhere.

What is your top cleaning tip?To avoid a build-up of dirt by cleaning all household areas regularly. Invest in the right equipment; a few microfiber cloths and microfiber flat mops, a

vacuum cleaner and dump cleaner and correct chemicals. I’d also advise people not to use bleach or chlorex at home – it is harmful and does not clean at all.

How can a clean home affect us psychologically?I’m no psychologist, but nobody feels comfortable in a messy environment, and of course it’s both unhygienic and unhealthy.

scorch marks If you’ve left your hair straighteners or tongs on the carpet, banish the mark using a wire brush and scrubbing the burnt carpet tips away, or trimming the top layer. If it’s on a mat or rug, wash it with a light detergent and this should make any leftover stain fade.

rusT If you have the orange stuff on your clothing, mix water, lemon juice and bicarbonate of soda together and soak the item in it for a couple of hours, then rinse. If it’s got hold of metalwork, though, wipe it with a wire brush or sandpaper. If grill pans have fallen prey, wash them with detergent, then cut a potato in half and rub the fresh side over the pan.

chocolaTe It may look scary, but don’t panic. Scrape off as much of it as possible with a blunt instrument then shampoo it, or soak the stain in a soda solution.

Clean up YouR aCt

keTTle Banish that horrible lime scale residue by filling your kettle with 50 per cent vinegar and 50 percent water and leaving it overnight. The next day, empty it, wash it with soapy water, refill it with fresh water, boil it and brew away, lime scale free...

kiTchen sink To kill stubborn germs that a normal dishwashing liquid can’t, clean your sink with a weak bleach and water mixture. If your sink is a little rusty, try a bicarbonate of soda paste and use lemon juice to rid lime scale.

mirrors and glass Mix one part washing soda to one part vinegar or lemon juice and wipe the surface of the glass or mirror with a cloth that’s been soaked in the mixture. Next, take a piece of screwed up newspaper and repeat the wiping action – surfaces will sparkle.

washing machine Want to avoid fluff on your newly-washed clothes? Unclog your filter regularly and freshen up your machine by running it on empty with washing powder or clear vinegar. This prevents mildew and lime scale from growing inside.

work surFaces and Tiles If you’ve got some particularly dirty areas in your kitchen, mix bleach with water and use an old toothbrush to scrub between the tiles. On really stubborn spots, repeat the action using a kitchen cream cleaner or water with bicarbonate soda solution and a few drops of chlorine.

crysTal and glasses For squeaky clean results, drop some white vinegar in to very hot water and rinse your glassware by hand. If there are tricky stains along the way, use white toothpaste to scrub them off gently. Place pricier crystal in a plastic bowl to prevent breakages in the process.

Freezer Is your freezer starting to resemble an igloo? Take all of your food out and place it in a cool box with some ice. Next, defrost your fridge by turning it off and putting a bowl of hot water inside to speed up the process. When it’s fully thawed out, give it a soapy rub down. While the appliance is still off, vacuum the back of it – where the cooling devices are – and this will make it run more efficiently.

TaPs Go to work on dirt rings by using a mild bathroom cleaner. If there’s still a lot of lime scale, though, dip a cloth in vinegar and you’ll be able to wipe it away in seconds. For extra shine, do the same again using white toothpaste: it really works.

15 to 20 drops of essential oils to a pump bottle filled with water, or simply drop the oil straight in to your bath. Try combining lavender with two drops of clary sage, three drops of geranium and five drops of grapefruit to relax and invigorate you.

• 80g brown sugar

• 80ml balsamic vinegar

• 40g fresh thyme

• 200g low fat feta cheese

• 20g brown manakish dough

For the dough...

• 45g all purpose flour

• Half a tsp salt

Light DelightsThe Health Factory's excutive chef, Paolo Serafini, shares the tricks of his healthy-eating trade – just in time for Dubai's best beach weather...

Caramelised onion tartlet

• Half tsp brown sugar

• Pinch of yeast

• 20ml water

• 15g fine brown flour

• Tsp vegetable oil

1. To make the dough, mix the flour with oil, water, sugar and yeast and create a smooth dough using your hands. Allow it to rest in the fridge for 30minutes. 2. Cut the onion in to long, thin strips and sauté in a pan with the brown sugar and balsamic vinegar. 3. Stir frequently, for about 20minutes, until the onion reaches a deep golden-

brown colour and is tender to the touch. 4. Preheat your oven to 180°C and place its cooking rack in to a central position. 5. While your onions are cooking, roll out the dough to slightly less than an eighth of an inch thick. 6. Cut out 12 pieces using a round-shaped cutter and lightly press each one into a mini-muffin cup. 7. Bake for approximately 10 to 12 minutes, until pale gold in colour. 8. Remove from the oven and set aside. Once cool, place Feta cheese mixed with fresh thyme in the centre of the dough and top it with the caramelised onion.

• 240g quinoa bio grains

• 80g yellow zuchinni

• 80g green zucchini

• 8g salt

• 8g black powdered pepper

• 80g red capsicum

• 80g parmesan

• 140g bottled sundried tomatoes

• 20g capers

• 32ml olive oil

• 20g parsley

• 20ml lemon juice

1. Add the quinoa to boiling water for 10 minutes and drain.2. Dice all of the vegetables into 1cm cubes and sauté in a frying pan. 3. Let the ingredients cool and then mix together with the lemon juice oil dressing.4. Cut the tomatoes in to long, thin strips and garnish with parmesan cheese, olives tomatoes and parsley.

Grilled salmOn FilleT and lemOn pasTa

• 800g salmon fillet (4 x 200g fillets)

• 50g parsley

• 50g spinach

• 350g durum wheat pasta

• 30g / 1 squeezed lemon

1. Allow the pasta to boil for 6 minutes and then toss the spinach in with it.2. Drain the water and dress the pasta with lemon juice and add salt to taste.3. Place the salmon fillet on a very hot grill for several minutes on each side and serve together.

• 320g white Chinese cabbage

• 240g tofu blocks

• 160 dry seaweed

• 160g cucumber

• 120g red cabbage

• 8g alfalfa sprout

• 8 chilies

• 120g carrots

• 5g ginger

• 5g garlic

• 10ml soya sauce

• Olive oil, salt and pepper to taste

1. Slice the tofu (half an inch in size) and pan fry, two minutes either side. 2. Cut the cabbage, cucumber and carrots into long thin strips.3. Make the sweet chili sauce by combining the ginger, garlic, soya sauce, oil and salt and pepper. 3. Mix the vegetables with the sprouts, seaweed and the sweet chili sauce.
