Emptying out your account every time you step into the mall? We know you can’t help but shop the sales, especially when they’re ridiculously low at this time of year. It only makes sense to shop half price right? Our selection of budget items (page 18), and homes to rent or buy, should offer relief and put a smile on your face. Here’s a tip: before hitting the stores, set a budget and shop for exactly what you need. Have friends and family staying with you this summer? Transform your room to make it look and feel like a hotel suite (page 36), and don’t overlook the bathroom (page 38). Dreaming of a getaway, or wishing your house resembled a stunning villa tucked away on an island? Stem inspiration from villas in Mykonos (page 45).

Jumeirah Village Circle is the highlighted area of the month, offering reasonably priced homes to lease and invest in. Take a look through the listings (page 64) and find out what this area has in store for you (54 and 58).

Happy reading.

Kitchen Factory, from the Aster Cucine range at KITCHENS & beyond, is a dynamic, innovative space that brings together materials, and textures that aren’t traditionally used in high-end kitchens. Aged iron shelves, unpolished reclaimed wood, and blackboards are some of the key elements that make this kitchen a lively, interesting one.

Bedroom Home Outfitter’s snooze zone scheme is a mixture of minimalism, rustic-elements, and a bit of masculinity. The giant bed is the focal point, with eyes slowly gravitating towards the art. Brick-style walls can easily be recreated with paint effects from Kansai or Jotun, and complement the wooden side tables, almost making it all seem like an industrial-style loft in New York.

Combined Space A studio doesn’t have to be compact or limited in terms of furniture and accessories. If you have tall ceilings, consider putting in a staircase to build a bedroom on top, and stem inspiration from this Sedar setting. The pops of colour from the couch, and statement chair give the space depth. Pick accessories that aren’t too flashy, like the lighting fixtures in this image, and try to synchronise colours with art.

Living Room Crate and Barrel’s interiors are fresh and inviting, making spring/summer indoors all the more exciting. The room is colour coordinated with accessories and art complementing each other, and the furnishing. Neat lines and simple wooden furniture work well, offsetting the otherwise airy, light living room.

Better Homes Magazine | HOME TOUR

I love the community. I tell everyone it’s a self-sustaining one

Lebanese national Joelle Rached moved to Dubai eleven years ago, and within that span of time she has lived in Karama,

Bur Dubai – back in 2005 – Downtown, and Jumeirah Village Circle. This area is one she is most fond of, having lived here for four years now. “I was previously in a townhouse, but it was too big for my six-year old son Karim and me,” says Joelle, as we sit in her two-bedroom apartment ideal for her, her little boy, and King Charles spaniel Caramel.

One of the main reasons for choosing this apartment was because of the friendly neighbours, views, and swimming pool. “I love the community. I tell everyone it’s a self-sustaining one, because there are pharmacies, clinics, supermarkets, and if I need anything more there’s Barsha mall close by too. It’s quiet but you don’t feel isolated, and you can still be in Dubai Marina or wherever in no time,” she says. Joelle is an Arabic copywriter for an advertising agency, and splits her day between the office and home. Another feature she

loves the most is that her bedroom looks out to the swimming pool, so she can work from the terrace, while watching over Karim while he’s splashing around.

The living room has pops of mustard yellow, blue and beige complementing each other. “I wanted a mix of English/American style of light colours, with Moroccan elements,” she says. Morocco has a lot of engravings, calligraphy, and elements that exude an Arabesque vibe, which is why it was the perfect fit, showcasing her Arabic heritage in a contemporary setting. When Joelle first moved to the city, eleven years ago, she admits her home was fully furnished from trusty Ikea. She relocated to Lebanon in between and sold everything, but when she headed back to Dubai, decorating her home at her own pace was on the cards. “It took me a year and a half to furnish my place, and I got help from my best friend who is a creative director/interior designer,” she tells us. The décor came together after the two purchased a rug and coffee table from Homes R Us. Joelle confesses her love for the extra large table, despite the fact that her friends have told her she needs

Page 35: Better Homes Magazine May'16

to swap it for a smaller one. “I love it, and I’m not giving it up,” she laughs. One look at her home and you may think she bought pieces from high-end stores, but Joelle tells us it’s a good mix of affordable and luxury. “My friends are always surprised when I tell them a few of the antique-style pieces are from Pan Emirates.”

The large items are a combination of Pan Emirates, Homes R Us, and Home Centre, while the accessories were picked up on sale from Marina Home and Crate and Barrel. The entryway mirror, a large stunning turquoise piece from Marina Home, lifts the space and Joelle tells us these little details have a great impact overall. She brought back throws, and crochet glass covers from Lebanon – knitted by her grandmother – adding in memorabilia from back home. The living room’s blue and beige couches work well with the surroundings that are of the same colour. “I love the sun! I hate drapes and darkness. You don’t need privacy in the living room, so I put this little drape in with a dainty hanging accessory,” Joelle tells us as we admire the creativity behind such a simple element.

The lobby exits out to the master bedroom – which belongs to Karim –packed with blues and reds. His first football jersey and Converse hang on the entrance wall, and an organ, baby-foot table, and TV are inside. “He got the largest room in the house because kids need space to play, plus his friend’s come over for sleepovers.” Joelle’s room is fresh, and airy, with whites, a wall adorned with pictures of Karim as a baby, and a little unicorn given by him, that is probably her most prized possession in the household. The bed from Ikea is an elegant all-white frame, with cushions that brighten it up. Little storage cabinets and trunks are placed all over the house in various colours, and most of them were budget buys from Pan Emirates too.

The kitchen wasn’t renovated, and she confesses she loves cooking, mostly Lebanese dishes like spinach and meat stew with rice - her son’s favourite. One of the only disadvantages is that the kitchen doesn’t boast enough drawer space, and just cabinets. However, Joelle worked that to her benefit by adding in a buffet cabinet that matches the home décor scheme.

While she enjoys cooking, Friday mornings are reserved for an authentic Lebanese breakfast from Al Karya bakery located in JVC. “Their food is the closest to back home, and I love relaxing on a Friday and eating in,” she speaks of her life in the neighbourhood.

How-to: Make your bedrooM feel like

a hotel suite

FIND YOUR INSPIRATIONat lXa, an interior design firm, the process begins with a ‘look and feel’ for clients, a great tool to identify your style. When pulling images from the web, spot a recurring theme that will help set the stage for a hotel-room vibe.

MAKE SPACElimit yourself to only a few precious objects, in order to keep your bedroom clean. organisation is key to having a stress free bedroom. under the bed storage is always useful in smaller spaces, along with bedside tables including drawers to allow books, iPod, a sleeping mask, and personal items to be stored away. the rule of three’s (or odd numbers, generally) is always a useful one to follow. objects that appear in threes are more appealing, memorable, and effective than other numbers of objects. think of spacing in photographs and paintings. in design, the rule serves as a tool for building drama and progression in a space.

TECHNICAL ASPECTStechnology plays a big role in our lives, and we all know that wires make a room

look unappealing. the team at lXa are fond of the batelier natural oak wooden cable chargers (batelier.net) that keep wires together. leave as many work-related activities out of the bedroom for a good night’s rest. if you prefer to have a desk, ideally this would be a multi-functional zone incorporating a dressing table/vanity/desk.

ZONE IT OUTPlan out how you want to use the space. a hotel room is unique because everything is thought out and measured. Creating certain areas for specific activities is extremely important, for example, a reading lamp next to a small sofa with side table - for reading and relaxing. also consider soft seating, vanity/dressing table/desk, and the sleeping zone.

FOCAL POINTSluxurious wallpaper creates depth, while adding a layer to the space, making it feel inviting and pulled together. apply it to the bedhead wall, and keep colours neutral when creating a harmonious space. for a monochromatic scheme, layer textures in the same tones to add

life and create a three dimensional feel. add a luxurious area rug that fits in front of the bedside tables, and extends at least one metre from the end (if you have enough space, if not 50 cm is fine). Consider splurging on lush wall-to-wall carpeting.

SOFT FINISHCapitalise on cushions, and layer sizes and patterns to tie in all tones. a pop of colour/pattern throughout the space with a luxurious throw at the end finishes the look, creates a sense of comfort and luxury. opt for egyptian cotton sheets for the bed, and consider silks, damasks, and linen for your fabric choices. if the room gets a lot of light, it’s smart to avoid bright colours, since fabrics fade quicker.

THE MOODuse dimmer switches for main lights and a warm white light for the side table lamps. don’t be afraid to use a feature decorative pendant or chandelier above the bed. floor lamps are extremely versatile too as it defines zoned areas – choose one with a dimmer. tips supplied by LXA. STATEMENT WORTHYFaucet and washroom fit-out pioneers Villeroy & Boch believe that a bathroom shouldn’t be just that. This setting boasts character, and charm, while resembling other rooms at home. The Octagon column bathroom sink provides refinement combined with quality, thanks to the TitanCream material – a combination of clay, quartz, feldspar, pegmatite and titanium dioxide. Styles such as the wood veneer dark chestnut, fine mocha leather, or smoky slate stone veneers are available, and when combined with a decorative copper ring between the sink and column, exudes elegance.

MYSTICAL AND MOODYDark colours can make a compact washroom look claustrophobic, thus a combination of warm and cool colours is imperative for those who want to achieve this look. Hansgrohe’s high-end mixers, combined with the Axor Citerio E Ambiance washbasin, oozes warmth and comfort. The brown hues, light panel, and stainless steel faucets are all the more glamorous when paired with elements including lanterns and textures in the form of rugs, and towels.

MONOCHROMATIC COLOURSFor a clean, sophisticated look, you can’t beat a classy black and white combination. This scheme from Kohler is chic, with minimalist design that isn’t too starkly modern. Wood elements add warmth, while wall-hung vanities, the toilet seat, and a freestanding bath contribute to the openness. To achieve the look, choose materials that offer reflective qualities, to focus the eye and create depth. Stick with angular, geometric shapes and simple forms to keep it clean and modern, and lastly, clear clutter with a vanity that stores everything you need behind closed doors.

The stunning backdrop of the sea, white and blue tones, and clear blue skies – the natural features of Greece, all of which

served as inspiration for the stunning Villa Sauria and Villa Mourzika in Mykonos. “We aimed to magnify the authentic local elements through interior design, which is why we have floor-to-ceiling windows, open spaces, and large outdoor decks with infinity pools, so guests can enjoy the bright skies and vividly blue seas,” says Ioannis Kalesakis, Founder and Managing Director of Magnificent.

The idyllic maritime climate means

A range of modern and chic villas,

as well as rustic, vintage types

guests at the hotel can experience the cold winter days in cosy surroundings, or the heat of summer tempered by sea breeze. “Private rooms accommodate large families and give them the privacy and seclusion they may desire,” he says. Visitors can find a range of modern and chic villas, as well as rustic, vintage types to cater to guest’s distinguished preferences.

Ioannis chose Mykonos due to its cosmopolitan nature, paradise-like beaches and hospitable culture, which attract tourists from all over the world. The villas are a great place for events and corporate gatherings too, with

lush green landscapes and seamless infinity pools that look as thoughthey are lapping into the Mediterranean Sea. “Despite the Villa Mourzika being 15-years old, the lay out, materials used, and matching furniture, offer a minimal aesthetic with a rustic touch. All these elements along with the unique location of south west orientation, natural light for most of the day, and breath-taking cliff views with uninterrupted sea horizon, gives this villa a unique character and ambiance unparalleled to the competition,” he says.

The kitchen is one of the major features in the house, and was designed

by passionate foodies. Wide spaces and dining areas were included at Magnificent, as dining and food plays a vital role in Grecian culture. The rustic character combined with state of the art Gaggenau appliances, makes it very kitsch. Earth tones, and materials such as wood, inox, and glass, are featured in the wood, mixed and matched with collectable furniture designed by Paul Potten. Having a centre island for guests to view preparation from the dining area is important for this setting. It is modest yet sublime, traditional yet modern, bringing together elements with state-of-the-art amenities and decoration of

the highest quality. Hardwood floors, wooden planks for ceilings, steel dish racks and a long, distressed dining table contrast with the contemporary stove, glass storage cabinets and dishwasher, exuding an inviting charm. “The dining table most definitely reflects the Mediterranean culture. Dining is always a big occasion for family and friends who enjoy eating in large groups surrounded by close ones in a room filled with food and laughter,” he says. Food plays an important role in the Greek lifestyle, and here we have incorporated the idea of huge dining tables to accommodate large families as is typical in Greece.

The villas also have in-house chefs and butlers who are available 24/7 to make your experience perfect with personal culinary and concierge assistance.

Neutral colours, especially white and beige tones are on-trend in the Mediterranean. A similar idea has been reflected in the interiors of the villas. Light shades make the room appear larger, and allow natural light to come in and brighten the space. It is also calm and soothing to the eyes, creating a mellow and warm atmosphere. “A neutral backdrop creates a welcoming interior when mixed with warm textures such as rough hewn wooden

elements, shiny tiles, and linens,” says Ioannis, reflection upon elements that complement the design.

Ceiling panels allow an efficient cooling system to be in place, while keeping with the rustic yet current theme of the villa. “Traditionally the ceilings at homes in Mykonos are covered in wood, for various reasons. It is practical for insulation from the cement construction, aesthetically to warm up the total white of the building from the cold winters, and cool the interior during the hot summers,” he says. A balance is kept in the climate indoors, between the natural sunlight and cool ceiling panels. These create dim lighting, due to low lights from the ceiling, which makes the spot seem intimate and relaxed.

The Roman Empire served as inspiration for the washrooms of Villa Mourzika, with a combination of marble, pebbles and stones, with a modern twist. The isolated drop-in jacuzzi, mirror frames and stainless steel faucet, down to the stained white and grey colouring, creates a regal effect. All rooms within

The design is as Grecian

the villa feature en suite bathrooms, with most comprising traditional built-in showers, and the master bedroom having additionally a round bath tab with jacuzzi. Minimal materials such as marble, cement tiles, and wood are noticeable too.

Overall, the design is as Grecian as possible, and Ioannis sourced local makers to buy materials from. “We went to popular makers as well as the hidden gems of Mykonos to complete the look,” he says. The architectural style of Villa Sauria is stunning yet simple, utilising local granite rock with mosaic decorations, which interplay with pristine whitewashed walls. Exquisite hand-made pebble mosaics by local artists decorate the entrance as well as the outdoors dining table. For Villa Mourzika, materials used for the finishing originated from various places, yet combined sublimely. The traditional local island technique of cement scrid is applied on the hallways, stairs and parts of the rooms and bathrooms. Marble and cement tiles hail from Italy, with parts of wooden floors from Germany, making it traditional with European influences.

Supermarkets and express stores are dotted all around JVC, and if you do need to head to the shopping mall, City Centre Me’aisem at IMPZ is just a few minutes away by road. Culinary options include everything from Indian to Lebanese, and most eateries offer home delivery. Studios, one-and two-bedroom apartments are on offer in all buildings, while townhouses showcase two, three, and four-bedroom options. Studios are available from 300-500 square feet, one bedrooms stretch to 1,200 square feet, and two-bedrooms up until 2,000 square feet. The houses are pretty spacious for the rent value, with one bedrooms being anywhere between Dhs55,000-Dhs75,000, and Dhs600,000-Dhs900,000 to buy. Villas and townhouses can be leased from as low as Dhs120,000, and are up for sale from Dhs1.2 million. Buildings boast a gym, swimming pool, and facilities such as a sauna and steam room – some buildings also house a rooftop terrace.

If you’re worried about children’s schooling, Jumeirah Village Triangle, The Springs, and Al Khail Road have plenty of options, and aren’t too far away. Getting in and out of the area isn’t a hassle either, as most cab drivers are familiar with JVC. Bus service has recently begun in the area too.

Jumeirah Village Circle, the last development on Al Khail Road, before the turn off onto Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed road, is packed with townhouses, villas, apartments and lofts that span over a wide price range that’s suitable for all budgets. It is ideally located just 10-15 minutes away from central locations such as Mall of the Emirates, Dubai Mall, and the new airport. At the moment, the community is under development stage, and will take around two years to complete. There’s ample space to walk your dog, and a couple of parks – with jogging tracks – around the community for little ones. Fun days and markets hosted by Nakheel take place in the community, and it’s a great way of meeting up with the neighbours.

What sets your educat ional inst i tut ion apar t f rom others in the c i ty?Jumeira Baccalaureate School (JBS), a Taaleem school, is an established International Baccalaureate (IB) World School in the heart of Dubai, where young people thrive, learn and succeed. At JBS we celebrate and embrace diversity. As an IB school we reflect on the culture of the world, and how this impacts our lives. Our students come from 85 different countries and this provides a rich learning environment so that students can understand and value the opinions of others in a safe place. Studying in an international setting, with students from around the world, also provides them with the environment to develop strong communication skills and universal human values.

What grades does i t go up unt i l? From the early years all the way through from Grade 1-12, the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme provides students with a world-class, inquiry-based learning experience that is linked to real life examples, enabling young people to be prepared for a future that is constantly changing.

Why should a parent enrol l their chi ld at your school? At JBS, we believe each student brings his or her own interests, abilities and motivation to learning. In an ever-changing world, we are educating children for jobs that do not exist, and

to use technologies that have not yet been invented to solve challenges that we cannot comprehend. Our goal is also to establish a genuine long-term relationship with the families in our school community.

Q. I’ve just arrived in Dubai and my children aren’t used to the heat. Are there any fun indoor summer camps available through summer?

A. Firstly, let me reassure you that despite the scorching temperatures, it is perfectly possible for kids to get through Dubai summers, and have plenty of fun indoors. There are many specialised camps focussing on everything from sports (like football, swimming and dance), to fashion, music, languages, robotics and even 3D printing; with quite a few options listed on the kids activities website afterschool.ae. So if your children have any particular passions or skills that would be a good place to start when picking a summer camp. Various schools, nurseries and play centres like Cheeky Monkeys also offer multi-

activity camps all over Dubai. Parents of school-goers can connect with other children in their class that will be here over the summer, to try to co-ordinate camps - it is always more fun and reassuring for kids to have a friend with them when trying out a new place or activity. Harkee Wilson

Q. I have a will from my home country. Is this valid in Dubai?

A. The judges apply Shari’ah Law and ignore any wills contrary to this. You would have to plea to the Courts of Appeal, which can be a costly exercise. The only way to bypass this with legal certainty is by registering a DIFC will. The DIFC Courts operate under a common law system, and therefore your wishes will be upheld. Cynthia Trench

WAste Not, WANt NotCut food wastage with these tips:

Add citrus scraps to a pot of hot water, and heat with cinnamon to give your home a lovely aroma. Use a composting bin instead of a garbage bin. Compost is great for those who love gardening, as it add nutrients to the soil. Bones and unused pieces of meat can be used to make a large batch of healthy broth for the family. Store food properly, and make sure you check your pantry before shopping. It’s important to use the ingredients you have before heading out to the store. Check the use-by date and keep any items that are going to expire in plain sight, so that you use it up quickly. In addition, don’t toss bananas or pears when they look a little funky, these can be used to make a fruit bread or decadent pudding.

douBle dut YWant to reduce food wastage, keep fruit and vegetables fresh for longer, and convert your fridge to a freezer over summer, or whenever required? Now it’s possible with Samsung’s latest release, the Twin Cooling Plus. The appliance keeps moisture locked in with its innovative technology, while ensuring the right temperature and humidity level of up to 70% is maintained throughout the fridge. Those who find themselves buying frozen food in bulk, or perhaps going away for a few weeks, can turn off the fridge compartment and switch to the freezer-fridge, energy saving, or vacation modes. Other mode settings include fridge max, and mini. If all that isn’t enough, the cooling system offers separate airflow for the fridge and freezer compartments, keeping the flavour of foods intact. H2O PURE BlUE SHOwER PURIfIER

Lacklustre locks and thin hair? “The UAE water” has long been blamed, though it isn’t the culprit. The water meets compulsory international standards, however the problem lies with contaminants in pipelines. Sand, dirt and heavy metals aren’t properly flushed out during construction, meaning high levels of chlorine have to be pumped into the water supply to keep us from getting sick with bacteria build up. This chlorine content dries out hair and skin. Lucky for us, Pure Blue shower purifier is easy to install, portable, and works wonders for your skin and hair. What we like? Hair was noticeably softer right after the first shower. Natural moisturising oils are kept intact,

80

making skin youthful looking, and hair soft and bouncy. Installation isn’t a hassle either, screw the adjustable head to your shower faucet, and connect the shower hose pipe to the bottom of the unit. The best part is you don’t have to spend much on costly shampoos and conditioners anymore. Each purifier is equipped with a shower filter cartridge, and the package also comprises an angle adapter, brass joint connector and a detailed user manual. What we didn’t like? You have to change the cartridge every four to six months. Sure that’s an additional cost, however it isn’t expensive at all. To buy: Dhs299 at h2opureblue.com
