It’s officially the end of the year. What are your plans for the festive season? I’m staying in town, and making my way to festive markets for copious amounts of hot chocolate with marshmallows and gingerbread. We’re skipping the turkey basting and opting for a takeaway (Page 60), but can’t wait to fill our homes with the scent of freshly baked pumpkin pie (Page 61).

Shopping for ornaments and décor? Get inspiration from page 24, or the shabby chic bedroom on page 22, to give your space a refresher. Take a tour of two villas, on page 36 and 46, for tips on how to style a home in a specific location – one by the sea, the other next to a golf course.

December is all about entertaining family and friends, and this issue is packed with chef’s tips and DIYs to try with friends and little ones.Since this is one of the trickiest months to keep the pounds off – mince pies, toffee nut lattes., chocolates – we are staying on the health track by sipping a smoothie every morning. Turn to page 80 to find two makers we reviewed. Jump on the bandwagon and enjoy your favourite concoction while flicking through the latest properties for sale or rent – maybe it’s time to purchase a home in 2016?

Happy Holidays.

this month we love… Paul Smith’s 15 year mark collaboration with The Rug Company is one of the best team-ups we’ve seen this year, that can actually be integrated into a home. The six hand-knotted rugs feature muted palettes, along with runners, and a cushion - fusing geometrical prints and colours. The foyer is about to go up a few notches with this natural yarn piece. Winter is the season to add warmth to a space. While we all can’t enjoy a fireplace at home in this country, it can be mimicked with a faux piece. Fill up an empty space with logs of wood to create the effect. The use of green, yellow, and the statement grey couch in this Ethan Allen room, brightens and balances the otherwise brown tones. Natural elements in the form of plants, branches, and wood complete the look.

Welcoming family and friends is an important

part of my lifestyle

if you’ve stepped into the French boutique comptoir 102, chances are you will recognise some of the pieces in this household. This four-

bedroom villa on Beach road is sited a street behind the boutique and café; and belongs to none other than the co-founder Alexandra de Montaudouin.

As we entered the foyer of the white exterior villa, we were greeted with a striking wall, grand piano and an interesting backlit art piece - a wedding gift. “i wanted to create a mysterious atmosphere where the dark colour of the walls emphasised the designer’s furniture. The wall light by Jean royère, of La Galerie Nationale Dubai, adds a warm tonality to the dark burgundy wall,” she says. The industrial wooden table picked up in Germany – a piece from the 1960’s – gives the entrance authenticity. Light is played around quite a bit, continuing on from the foyer to the living room, which showcases striking art pieces like a wire, when lit, reads ‘infinitely far’ on the bare white walls. “some of my favourite pieces include the architectural folding floor light by Florence Lopez, the Le Deun

i trained myself to spot unique and one of a kind items,” she says. her design philosophy is a mixture of elegance, comfort, artistic, and unique pieces, combined with a few anonymous objects.

Alex previously worked as a freelance interior designer in Dubai, and tells us that whenever she decorates a house, she thinks of how to best entertain family and friends in it. “i adore hosting dinners and welcoming friends as it is an important part of my lifestyle. We can entertain inside or outside, standing up or seated. it’s really flexible, and i like to change the setting depending on who is coming over,” she says. The round dining table is ideal for small, intimate dinners, and Alex makes sure her Aster of Villatte dishes are brought out for elegant dinners, to accompany the candle

and flower arrangements. This villa was chosen despite the

garden being small, as the kitchen and dining rooms have large doors that open out to the backyard space. “The garden was in terrible shape so we immediately had a teak terrace built to cover the area. it spreads over most of the space, creating the illusion of an enlarged attached area, while allowing plants to grow from under the terrace,” she says. A bench was added in, and covered with cushion, to complement the silver Moroccan coffee table. her ardent love for art is seen through pieces she cherry-picked over the years. After recently becoming a fan of the iranian trio rokni herizadeh, ramin herizdeh and hesam rahmanian, she bought ‘The howl’ piece from iVDE Gallery, to place in the

LED circles which look like a sculpture, and the hubert robert standing light,” says Alex.

The living room interiors consist of her favourite pieces from the boutique, combined with furniture from the 20th century, which she has been collecting through the years. some key antique pieces include the Acajou high armchairs from the 1940’s, a red sofa by ico Parisi, a scandinavian themed buffet, brass floor light by hubert robert, and the folding small table by Fortuni. To give the space a contemporary touch, yellow cotton fabric was used on the small Mira sofa, and dark grey velvet of the big Victor sofa, both by caravane. india Mahdavi’s ceramic bishops, and Don Giovanni ceramic and glass light add a personal touch to the area.

The mother of three has always had a knack for interiors, and claims that her style is highly influenced by French culture, and her background in the art world. “When i worked at sotheby’s, i was exposed to a selection of the finest art and design pieces, and this was how

Page 41: Better Homes Dec'15

dining room. “Two of my favourite pieces in our collection are an installation by Fred Erdekens, titled ‘infinitely Far’, and Gerhard richter P8 Edition 2014, chromo graphic colour prints, mounted on an aluminium structure in the study,” she says. i am also very fond of ‘Aquarelle’ by Bram Van den Velde in my bedroom, and a drawing by Jean charles de castelbajac in the passage, which was especially commissioned for me,” she adds. she also purchased a piece from carbon 12 Dubai, by the Portuguese artist Gil heitor cortesâo, which has yet to find a spot in the home.

The downstairs has much to offer, but upstairs is where the family probably spends time the most. The study room, used predominantly by Alex’s husband, boasts a vintage German desk, and black walls – creating a contrast to the natural light – and the Princess Bed with 5 mattresses by caravane, which adds a touch of comfort and lightens the atmosphere with its warm colours. The walls are adorned with photos from Muriel Bordier, mixed with magnifying glass mirrors, to give the room character. Alex’s bedroom is peaceful and relaxing, with pale grey walls that compliment the dark grey curtains and the blue/

grey linen on the Louis XiV armchair. The bed has a dash of mustard, with a woolen bedcover by caravane, and you will notice a few other similar coloured accents in the room - in the hand-woven geometrical cushions by india Mahdavi. “i use a lot of linen, natural fabrics and soft colours, to keep the room light and slightly whimsical,” says Alex. Both side tables hold a collection of décor magazines, so she can grab them whenever she needs inspiration. The children’s bedrooms are on the lighter side, with powdery grey/pink for one daughter, and light turquoise and green for the other.

When the family first moved in, they realised the villa was quite old and

in desperate need of modifications. “i started with the ceilings and lighting in the kitchen and bathrooms, added colour to the walls, and put parquet in the living and dining room. i also transformed a bathroom and, as mentioned previously, added the teak terrace outside,” she says. As for further transformations, Alex says she is constantly refreshing the colours of the walls, and shifting art and furniture around. she would also like a high tech, but minimalist kitchen with a steam oven. Alex enjoys the residential feel the community offers, and the ability to cycle, and walk to nearby places. “Living close to the boutique, and beach, is such a luxury,” she says with content.

GeT YOUr rOOm TO APPeAr bIGGer Step 1: Place a large single mirror in the room, preferably over the couch, as the focal point. This allows the reflection of natural and artificial light, making it look considerably brighter.

Step 2: Pick sheer drapes and window coverings, so that natural light can flood through the room. You can also brighten dark corners with LED lamps and spotlights, so that it seems like one large bright space.

Step 3: Keep furniture off the floor, and big pieces against the wall. Raise the couch by installing legs underneath, and do the same for your coffee-and side-tables. This allows the light to float through freely, portraying the illusion of more space.

Step 4: Install floor-to-ceiling bookshelves to add height to the space. This will make the room appear taller and bigger, by drawing all eyes and attention upwards.

Step 5: When picking rugs, avoid fussy, printed types and choose soft colours with delicate prints instead. Busy rugs make the room look cluttered.

creATe YOUr OWN cANOPYStep 1: Position your tassel, lace, or pom pom trim – enough to run down the length of two curtains – at the top of the first curtain, placing it on the left edge so that the decorative elements hang off. Pin in place and continue until you reach the end of the curtain. Cut excess trim. Pin perpendicular to the trim and curtain edge, to sew over the pins.

Step 2: Repeat with the second curtain, from the right edge, so that the trim faces each other when hung from the bed.

Step 3: Thread your sewing machine with the chosen colour and sew down the middle of the pins. Secure the ends by raising the needle, turning the fabric, and then sewing horizontally back and

forth over the trim multiple times. Trim excess thread, and remove pins once secure. Repeat for the second curtain.

Step 4: Sew a ribbon on both ends of each curtain, to hang on a four-poster bed. To make a round hoop canopy, remove the inside loop from a large 24 inch diameter embroidery hoop, and slide the curtains on, so the sides done well are

facing out, and trims meet.

Step 5: Close the hoop with the hardware (usually included with the set) and hand sew three pieces of ribbon around it, to the tops of the curtains, to hang it. You can also wrap with fishing line, by joining and knotting the rope or ribbon in the middle to make a hook. Attach to the ceiling.

Step 1: Lay out the pillowcase, making sure the edges are matched up as closely as possible, so when you cut it, all sides are even.

Step 2: Grab a piece of cardboard or newspaper, cut out half of a U shape (vertically), and make a simple pattern to trace, so your strap cut outs are even on each side. Play around with the length of the cut, especially if you plan to wear the bag on your shoulder. Add 3 inches to the overall length for your finishing knot.

TUrN A PIllOWcAse INTO A reUsAble TOTe

Step 3: Keep the pillowcase as flat as possible, cut through both sides of the fabric to make the cut outs for the armhole. Tie up the open end in a tight double knot to secure.

Step 4: The edges of the tote will naturally fold when in use, but if you want to go ahead and finish the edges, use a no-sew iron-on adhesive. Seal the open edges of the pieces you cut out to make the armhole. Run a drawstring through the hems and use these longer bags for produce the next time you’re at the grocery store.

Step 2: Add craft glue to a large cork, and place the geode on it, pressing down firmly. Set aside to dry and use on your favourite bottles, to replace caps or corks.

S ienna Lakes, Jumeirah Golf Estates, is the ideal retreat for those looking for serenity, with leisure activities like a

golf course within distance – especially for an avid golfer like the husband residing in this holiday home. Merete Broen’s latest project was to transform the holiday home for a retired couple from the UK, so that they could host their children, and grand children, whenever in town during the cooler months. “They wanted a luxurious feel that they could look forward to visiting,” says Merete. The sense of space and light were played upon, and reflected in the design, with the use of warm colours to make the rooms spacious, yet cosy. Customised rugs were added in, along with wall coverings from Casamance and

Harlequin for a personalised touch.Keeping the theme of entertaining in

mind, the family opted for a large dining table both indoor and outdoor. “This influenced our design decisions when selecting the furniture, most of which was custom designed from brands we chose, so that we could specify the size, colour and finish,” she says. A Saphir JNL

dining table, buffet TV console, and coffee table were fitted in the dining room.

Purple tones are noticeable all over, as requested by the client, and these were weaved into the design through accessories, and soft furnishings. “The colour has a very regal quality and feel, and since it’s quite a warming shade, it suited this home well,” says Merete. She turned to trusted brands like Poliform, to customise an L-shaped sofa for the bedroom, as well as fabrics from Casamanca for a lounge chair from Giorgetti. Merete also dug into her own company’s interior range for furniture and accessories to suit their style. The bedding is a mixture of The White Company and pieces from her company’s tailoring team.

The kitchen is the core of any

household, and to continue with the social aspect of entertaining, Merete opted for a breakfast counter with seating, finished with granite. Overall, the team thoroughly enjoyed working on the project, personalising furniture, choosing themes and colours, and furnishing it to become the ultimate holiday sanctuary. “The client wanted the house to be completely furnished and accessorised, and all they had to do was turn up with their bags. We filled the kitchen cupboards with crockery, glasses and cutlery, the bathroom with towels and soaps, and the linen cupboards with bedding,” she says. The client was incredibly impressed with the outcome, and decided to hand over the interior and architectural development for the next plot of land too.

Dubai Marina is one of the city’s prime locations for expats, couples, and singles. It is within walking distance from popular attractions like the Marina Walk, The Beach, Sky Dive, Pier 7, and numerous five star hotels, restaurants and cafés. The residents within the vicinity benefit from access to the nearby tram, and metro stations too.

The area offers studio accommodation as well as one, two, three and four bedroom apartments, penthouses, and townhouses. The Marina also boasts waterfront villas as part of a building complex, making it apt for families that still want to live within the happening

What sets your educat ional inst i tut ion apar t f rom others in the c i ty?JBS is an International Baccalaureate World School, and one of only a handful of IB schools worldwide, offering all four programmes: the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, Diploma Programme, and the Career-related Programme. It has become the leading international school with over 85 nationalities in the heart of Jumeirah, due to its focus on inspirational teaching and learning. The school accepts students from ages three-18; Pre-K all the way through to Grade 12.

Why should a parent enrol l their chi ld at your school? The school is dedicated to enabling all children to access an education that will prepare them for the future, providing a sense of cultural and national identity as an essential part of life in the 21st century, whilst promoting intercultural understanding and respect. We have a strong language programme offering Arabic and French alongside English. Our record of 100% pass rate for the Diploma Programme, with results above the world average score, is amplified by the fact that many of our DP students do not have English as their first language. Our classrooms are designed for future learning featuring a blend of tablets, inspirational textbooks, audio-visual facilities, with secure WiFi connectivity for students’ own laptops and tablets.

What e lse does the school focus heavi ly on?Our students’ work in society engage them in projects with populations in less fortunate circumstances. Such activities teach them personal responsibility and accountability, communication skills, and mindfulness, all of which prepare them for adulthood. Extra curricular activities are a vital part of our learning environment and students are encouraged to take part in a broad range of activities.

Does the school of fer anything e lse in par t icular? We have a Gifted and Talented programme, and offer yoga, cricket, football, rugby, drama club, chess, robotics, choir and orchestra, to name a few.

Q. My baby has been falling sick ever since we moved. Could you please recommend a doctor - I think I’ll need to check for allergies?

A. When arriving in a new country there are many varying factors that can contribute to health complaints. In the UAE in particular it can get very dusty which can cause allergy-like symptoms. Dry air caused by air-conditioning can also cause chest and nose complaints, and can be very unpleasant. While these may not sound serious, it is always important to get your family checked out. And while it may seem daunting at first, luckily there are many great healthcare facilities around the UAE which offer 360 services including Arabian ranches

Q. The water in this region is pretty hard, and I can feel the drastic change in my hair texture. Is there a solution to this?

A. Desalinated or hard tap water in Dubai is stronger than countries abroad – this has been shown to contribute to

hair breakage and loss. One solution is to install a filter before your bathroom water heater, with the purpose of filtering the damaging water from its main aggressor: chloride, as well as killing harmful bacteria and ionizing the water – leaving you with softer hair and skin. Colin Thomas and Daniel Garner

Q. Could you please reccomend a shop for organic bedding and products for children?

A. I love The Change Initiative on Sheikh Zayed Road. It is like a wonderland for organic lovers, and includes everything from clothes, bedding and products for children, to organic fresh fruit and vegetables from local farmers, and a lovely little café fantastic for coffee and healthy bites. The place is also great for mummies and babies as it regularly hosts events and classes for tots to enjoy. My other favourite place is the RIPE Market. I love it there as the majority of stalls retail products made by local businesses, many of which sell adorable organic products for children. Abbey Michelle

Q. Is there going to be a further drop in rents in 2016, and could you please point out which areas? I have two children so I’d like to keep space in mind too.

A. According to my personal observations, rents will continue to decline in 2016. Simply said, too many new homes will be available to tenants; tightening and complicating of the administrative processes, and cost for renting homes which will prompt tenants to share accommodation or move to less regulated areas. Of course, there will be two exceptions to the trend of declining rents. The rent of signature villas and one-of-a-kind luxury apartments will remain high as such properties are not comparable, neither that many. The other types of properties for which rents will remain high are in centrally located business hubs like DIFC, and to some extent Sufouh, which is near the Dubai Internet and Media cities. Families with children will benefit from the decline of residential rents too, and can now rent in suburban communities such as the Arabian Ranches, Falcon City, The Springs, Mirdif, The Villa, and similar, at lower rates. Those looking to rent cheaper, new and modern apartments, should also consider Sports City. Gergana Mineva

L U X U R Y B Y T H E S E AThe spacious, fully furnished four bedroom penthouse situated in Aquamarine, exudes an Arabesque vibe with its’ Roman influences on Islamic architecture, including columns and architraves, as well as Mashrabiya techniques on brackets, the television units, and cushions. TRIED & TESTEDWe review the latest household gadgets on

the market

kEnwOOD SmOOTHIE 2gO

With two speed options and cups, this gadget is the ultimate for couples, and those rushed for time. Keep your mix ready the night before, or dunk in whatever you can find, before turning it into a fresh smoothie.

What we like? The cups are portable, light to carry, and easy to clean. The two speed options allow you to perfectly blend the smoothie to your desired thickness, and you can use soft and hard fruit and vegetables. It isn’t extremely loud as well.

What we didn’t like? The gadget isn’t available in many colours, however the black/chrome works perfectly well for every kitchen scheme.

To buy: Dhs179 at Jashanmal.

SmOOTHIE On THE mOvE makER

Kick-start your day with a nutritious fruit and veggie smoothie to amp up your vitamin and antioxidant intake. Place all your ingredients into the blender bottle, so that you can whizz your concoction, grab the bottle, and go.

What we like? The compact smoothie maker is ideal for one, and doesn’t take up much counter space. The base unit is easy to operate and perfect for making

everything from smoothies to mocktails. The box even includes a selection of recipes so you don’t get bored of your daily berry or green blends.

What we didn’t like? The bottle isn’t too attractive, however that isn’t a crucial problem as you can always switch the cups when heading out.

To buy: Dhs270 at Lakeland.
