Whether it’s a traditional home in a rural village or a high-rise penthouse in an exclusive area

of London, a Redrow home is instantly recognisable. The housebuilder prides itself on the build quality and craftsmanship that goes into every new home. Combine this with unrivalled customer service and it all adds up to an outstanding homebuying experience and a long history of delighted customers.

In celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2014, Redrow has reached a milestone that proves not only experience and business acumen, but also the enduring appeal of the brand. Here we explore the qualities that have made the company the success it is today, including the cornerstones of heritage and evolution, and look at the way the company continues to innovate, such as the launch of My Redrow – its pioneering customer service experience.

QUALITYThe craftsmanship of a Redrow home is immediately apparent even before you walk through the front door thanks to the exquisite exterior detailing and strong kerb appeal. Upon entering, it’s clear the uncluttered contemporary interiors are designed to the very highest specification,

with open plan layouts and plenty of family friendly features to make you feel right at home.

Redrow’s skilled builders and interior designers make sure that every property, regardless of size, is built to the same excellent standard and every feature is carefully planned to suit modern family life; whether this be the stylish Heritage Collection kitchens, inspired by research trips to Italy, or intricate detailing such as stone bandings on Regent Collection properties.

Many appliances are included as standard from well known brands such as Siemens, Smeg and AEG. Similarly, Redrow works with leading bathroom designers to incorporate suites from leading names including Ideal Standard, Sottini and Villeroy & Boch. Bathrooms may also be customised with a choice of tiles from companies such as Johnsons and Porcelanosa.

“We know what quality means to our customers and take the highest care in the construction and design of our homes,” says Dave Bexon, Group Sales and Marketing Director for Redrow Homes. “Working with top designers and manufacturers ensures that our specification and appliances stand out from our competitors for style, performance and energy efficiency.”

“We know what quality means to our customers and take the highest care in the construction and design of our homes” Dave Bexon, Group Sales and Marketing Director

In 2014 Redrow Homes celebrated 40 years of building high quality

properties for new and existing homeowners. We look back at what

the homebuilder has achieved and find out how it continues to

maintain a reputation for innovation and forward thinking.

COME HOME TO REDROW

HERITAGEIn celebrating its 40th year, Redrow can look back on many milestones: welcoming its 50,000th homeowner in 2005 (they’ve helped up to 3,000 more homeowners to find their dream home every year since); the redevelopment of two Grade II listed buildings on Knightstone Island, which won the International Property Award for Best Redevelopment in the World; and completing the award winning One Commercial Street, a 22-storey building in a prime London location, to name but a few.

“Our experience and traditional values are also reflected in the names of our collections such as The Heritage Collection,” says Dave. “Homes from this range feature traditional architecture, inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement.”

INNOVATIONAnother collection, introduced only last year, is Abode, which is designed for a more contemporary way of life with open plan living areas and features such as underfloor heating, wet rooms and BBQ area. The launch of Abode is a prime example of the way in which Redrow continues to evolve and stay one step ahead of the competition.

“Abode added another dimension to our portfolio, offering first-time buyers, families and downsizers a fresh option and bringing city-style interiors to our semi-rural developments,” Dave adds.

The only way to complement Redrow’s

exceptional architectural design and beautiful interiors is with state-of-the-art technology and building methods, employed to make the homes as energy- efficient as possible and helping to save customers money. A combination of high-quality insulation, double glazing and low-energy boilers all ensure heating bills remain low, while low-energy light fittings and new energy-efficient appliances keep electricity costs down.

Compared to an equivalent sized upgraded Victorian house, a four-bedroom Redrow home is estimated to save its owner £1,332 a year on energy bills. As important as these savings are, of course, insulation and double glazing also make for a very cosy home that’s warm in the winter and cool in the summer.

MY REDROWIn 2013 Redrow homebuyers were introduced to a brand new customer experience – My Redrow. By signing in via the housebuilder’s website – www.redrow.co.uk/myredrow – customers can search through current and planned developments to find their perfect property. Users can then manage viewings

and telephone appointments, see detailed specifications and floor plans, save favourites and browse the extensive range of options and choices available

Once they’ve reserved their new home, customers can select and purchase options and choices available to them to customise their new home, day or night, all online. From kitchen units, work surfaces and tile choices to wardrobes, fireplaces and even light switches, the opportunities to put a unique design stamp on your new home are vast. Not only does My Redrow make the homebuying experience more exciting and involving, it also brings all the details of your home purchase into one place.

“The introduction of My Redrow demonstrates our commitment to improving the customer journey – from searching for your dream home, to perfecting the final product,” says Dave. “My Redrow has received plaudits from industry experts and customers alike, which makes us confident in our ability to lead the way in customer service.”

Indeed, My Redrow was recognised in the 2013 Peer Awards, winning Overall Customer Engagement, as well as the Technology for Engagement Category.

“The introduction of My Redrow demonstrates our commitment to improving the customer journey – from searching for your dream home, to perfecting the final product” Dave Bexon, Group Sales and Marketing Director

COME HOME TO REDROW

COME HOME TO REDROWAbove all, Redrow knows that it’s only by excelling in every area – from design and construction, to innovation and customer service, that it can maintain its reputation among its customers for excellence. Here’s what homeowners who have already come home to Redrow had to say…

MARTIN WEDGE OWNS A REDROW HOME IN CHESTNUT WALK, BILSTON“I bought my previous property from a different developer and lived there for six years, but was never happy there. The rooms were small, there was no storage space – it was like a shoebox. I’d decided I didn’t want to buy a brand new house again and had looked online at Victorian and Edwardian homes that I could renovate, until Redrow’s Heritage Collection caught my eye.

“I adore this house and am much happier here. Coming home is a completely different experience to what I had before. The house is comfortable, spacious and relaxing to be in.”

SHIRLEY AND ALLAN CASLIN FOUND THEY COULD LIVE THE HIGH LIFE AT CROWN PARK IN CHESTER“We loved the plans, the plot location and the general style of the home. We were able to go online and look at the rooms, so it didn’t feel like much of a risk to buy before the home was complete. Buying off plan gave us the opportunity to have a say right from the start about all the fixtures and fittings and really make the house our own. Our home has a lovely flow to it and its versatility really suited us.”

STEVE KANE AND TRACY STOCKLEY PURCHASED A HOME AT RATIO IN ERITH, KENT“Because we’d come from rented property, we didn’t have all of the kitchen appliances that Redrow include in their standard specification and if we’d bought an older house we would have had to buy them ourselves. We enjoyed being able to choose what we wanted in terms of things like the finish of the kitchen cabinets and work surfaces and the bathroom tiles.”

Suddenly, bucket lists – those collections of things to do before you die, or, as the phrase goes, ‘kick the bucket’ – are all the rage. The

practice has grown in popularity following the 2007 fi lm of the same name, in which Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman starred as two terminally ill characters on an adventure to sample all those experiences they always wished they had enjoyed.

Now, there’s a Food Lovers’ Bucket List, dreamed up by Kenwood and a panel of experts, including critic Giles Coren, Waitrose magazine editor and sometime MasterChef judge William Sitwell and Great British Bake Off fi nalist Miranda Gore Brown.

It’s not as heavy and emotional as Nicholson and Freeman’s road trip – think death by chocolate rather than actual death – but nevertheless it was a serious business for those who helped to compile it. Simon Rimmer, best known as the cook on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch, was among those deciding what had to appear in the top 50.

“There are many things that play a part,

aside from ego and desire of those on the panel,” he explains. “First, we had to know where to pitch it. With myself, William and Giles, the natural inclination was to think about the most amazing thing we’d ever eaten, or the most unbelievable experience, but then you think what your mum might want, what my kids would like or what I’d like them to do.”

As a result, alongside visiting certain restaurants around the world, there are some simpler, yet truly rewarding experiences among the 50. Cooking a curry from scratch is one of them, for example; not something that should trouble even the most amateur home cook, and not needlessly extravagant, but something we should all do at least once.

Catching a fi sh and cooking it on the beach is another. OK, it’s not something you could do each day for your tea, but it does sound quite romantic. Baking a chocolate cake with your children is a third choice and perhaps typifi es the idea of the simple pleasure.

“When that one came up, everyone

FOOD TO DIE FORWhen TV chef Simon Rimmer was asked to help compile a list of the 50 food experiences you must try before you die, he knew it would be tough. From renowned international restaurants to DIY cooking experiences, Andy Welch discovers which tasty treats made the cut

around the table just said ‘Oh yes, absolutely’,” says Rimmer, who claims he’s done around 40 of the fi nal 50 on the list. There were three items he was particularly keen to fi ght for, and number one was Betty’s Tea Room in Harrogate. Rimmer loves the place – he had his wedding reception in the York branch of the tea room and says he’d recommend a visit to anyone.

“It’s deliriously overpriced, but the level of service and quality of food make it worthwhile. You might pay £7 for a piece

of fruitcake, but then if you were sitting opposite the Place de l’Opera in Paris, you wouldn’t moan about your nine-euro coffee - you’d just admire the view. These aren’t about everyday experiences; I’m not suggesting going there is something you do on your way to work.”

He wasn’t quite so lucky with ‘eating cold baked beans from the can’ and ‘eating a doner kebab’ – perhaps the rest of the panel don’t know what it’s like to be a hungry, drunk student – but his choice of

fi sh and chips made the grade.“I even stated which chippy it should be

– and that’s Seniors just outside Blackpool,” he says, explaining it exemplifi es everything that’s great about a local institution. “It was very tough deciding these things and the meetings were fraught with lots of shouting. The thing is, if we’d been asked to make a list of 500, we could’ve done it, but I’m very pleased with the 50 things we’ve chosen. I honestly think it’s a list for everyone.”

REDISCOVERING RieslingEvery grape has its moment and, mainly thanks to the surge in popularity of Asian cuisine, the time has come for Riesling

redrow.co.uk

WINE

31

ADVERTGermany’s trophy grape comes in

a variety of styles and this noble white, with its crisp, natural acidity, no oak infl uence and

a lower-than-average alcohol level, is light and elegant, but with the power to partner spicy curries, stir-fries, sushi and sashimi.

The beguiling fl avours of apples, peaches and pears come in varying degrees of sweetness - from bone-dry to richly sweet - and the distinctive slim bottle that’s sometimes too tall to fi t in the door of the fridge (a minor irritant) has also found favour in South Africa, Australia and New Zealand where the wine grape is grown in small quantities.

Just across the border from Germany, the picturesque Alsace region in Northeast France also produces excellent Riesling and the famous wine route (which celebrated its 60th anniversary last year) stretches along vine-covered hills on the west bank of the river Rhine.

The sunny, warm and dry climate provides ideal conditions for winemaking and dry, spicy styles such as Cave de Beblenheim Grafeneben Riesling 2010, Alsace, France (£9.99, 12% ABV, Waitrose), is a lovely example. With typical aromas of spring fl owers and a streak of minerality running through the lemony fl avours, this would

also pair well with fi rm white fi sh for non-spice lovers.

A sweeter counterpart and an off-dry

style from one of the region’s most famous winemakers, Rolly Gassmann, Riesling 2009, Alsace, France (£55 case of six, 13.5% ABV, www.rdfi newine.com) is rich and lush, but has enough acidity to stop it being over-the-top. With succulent pear fl avours and a hint of pepper, it has a gewürztraminer lychee nose, but without the oily

mouth-feel and tastes utterly delicious. Lucky for some, Germany has 13 wine

regions and the second largest; Pfalz is marked by powerful, dry styles such as Darting Estate Dürkheimer Riesling 2013, Germany (£9.49, 12.5% ABV, Marks & Spencer). Fresh and lively with peach, apple and melon, punctuated by a bracing note of minerality that gives way to orange groves, it’s exotic and appealing.

For another racy Riesling echoing typical Pfalz ripeness and strength, try Reichsrat von Buhl Riesling Nr 1 2013, Germany (£10.99, 12.5% ABV, www.laithwaites.co.uk). Pure and zingy with notes of lemon, lime and peach, counterbalanced by good acidity, this would be especially delicious with a lightly spiced prawn stir-fry.

Elsewhere, the ancient soils of Elgin in South Africa produce a tiny amount

of Riesling that’s richly fruited and elegant, especially in the hands of producers such as Paul Cluver Estate. Try Paul Cluver Ferricrete Riesling 2013, Elgin, South Africa (£12.99, 10.5% ABV, Marks & Spencer), which is off-dry and has an appealing fl oral nose with honeysuckle notes, white peach and yellow apple fl avours, plus a touch of

zesty lime that keeps it fresh, appealing and deliciously rounded.

For newcomers to Riesling who prefer to venture Down Under for their vino, Wakefi eld in the Clare Valley have found a formula for success with their medal-winning Wakefi eld Estate Riesling 2012, Australia (£11.99, 12.5% ABV, Marks & Spencer), which is dry, crisp and brimming with orchard fruits, tingling acidity and lovely, lingering aromatics on the lively fi nish.

Uber citrusy, pungent and very lively, it may come as little surprise that Belmonte Riesling 2010, New Zealand (£11.99, 12% ABV, www.virginwines.co.uk) is from the Marlborough region, home to top-notch New World Sauvignon Blanc. With similar zippy appeal, it’s fruity and pure, with honeysuckle aromas and an energetic fi nish that’s more than a match with fusion food.

STEP INTO STYLE THIS SEASON

If you’re looking for new and interesting ways to freshen up your home’s interior, there are plenty of exciting trends coming into fashion for 2015.

We hear from the design experts, who share their opinions on some key looks that will see you through the coming months

Nights may be drawing in, but thanks to the

fabulous new interior trends that are sure to

brighten up your home this autumn/winter

season – from bold colours and tropical prints

to warm woods, luxurious metals and feature

headboards – you’ll just love spending time

indoors. Emma Brindley, Redrow Homes’

Interior Design Manager, and Dawn Kitchener,

Managing Director of interior designers blocc,

who work alongside Emma to design some of

Redrow’s show homes, share their thoughts…

GO FOR BOLD WITH YOUR COLOUR PALETTE AND PRINTSIn 2014 we saw lots of botanical prints

emerging in soft furnishings and it’s a trend

that’s set to continue into 2015 – but it’s even

bigger, bolder and brighter, as Dawn explains.

“There are lots of strong colours and striking

patterns around,” she says. “While we did see

a lot of floral and foliage appearing in prints

earlier in 2014, it’s taking a more tropical,

exotic direction for the new season. There’s

no reason why your interior needs to echo the

dreary winter weather outside – think birds of

paradise and palm leaves. It’s an injection of

style to really warm up your home.”

No one colour holds the key to the

autumn/winter look; it’s a combination that’s

really making waves, from vivid reds and

pinks to indigo blues and sea greens.

“If I had to pick one colour that we’re

probably going to see more of this season,

then I think navy could make the biggest

impact,” continues Dawn. “Navy can actually

be fairly neutral. It blends really well with

most other colours. If you don’t want to go

for darker walls, a navy sofa or chair can look

very stylish.”

For those who don’t want to take the

plunge with wall-to-wall colour and patterns,

it’s very easy to stay on the bold trend, but

retain a more subtle, adaptable look.

“For those who don’t want to go all out

on a new look every season, which obviously

isn’t very cost-effective, it is still fashionable

to retain a neutral palette with ivories, taupes

and soft greys and add accents of bold

colour,” says Emma. “This is hugely practical

as you can change the accents very easily,

particularly if you introduce them through

cushions and rugs. This neutral look, making

use of accent colours, works well for both

classic and contemporary décor styles.”

PICK AND MIX YOUR FURNITUREMatching furniture is out and contrasting

pieces are in, according to Emma.

“It’s still a very eclectic look that is popular

– really, anything goes,” she says. “This is

actually a much more cost-effective way

EXQ_3_Redrow_Interiors v3.indd 32 28/10/2014 15:51

Page 33: Exquisite New Homes Redrow Homes November 2014

INTERIOR DESIGN

33redrow.co.uk

to furnish your home, as you don’t need to

purchase everything in one go; you can really

build some key pieces up over time. You can

also blend older, antique-style pieces with

others that are much more contemporary.

“If you are looking to introduce a few key

items of new furniture into your home, metallic

effects are big news. Copper, brass and bronze

are all making waves and you can mix metals

that perhaps you wouldn’t normally place

together. We’re using lots of pieces that mix

chrome and brass at the moment.”

If metallic’s not your thing then the trend

for painted furniture could give a tired room a

new lease of life.

“Painted furniture is making a comeback,

particularly in ivory, grey and taupe,” Dawn

says. “It tends to work best on straight-lined

pieces such as tables, chairs, office furniture

and sideboards and is a great way for people

to give their existing furniture a fresh look.

“Natural wood will also be coming to the

fore, particularly oak and smoked oak. It’s

strong, comfortable and solid and can appear

very warm in the winter, particularly under

soft lighting.

Smoking is a process used to darken the

wood without it looking like it’s been painted

or stained. It’s a great alternative to wenge

wood and looks great in more neutral or

minimalist surroundings.”

LIGHTING THE WAYLighting is a very important and occasionally

overlooked element in many people’s homes.

It can change the whole feeling of a room and

in the colder months, can really help to create

a warm and cosy interior to come home to. As

LED lighting improves and represents better

value for money, there is an increasingly wider

choice of lighting styles available.

“Lighting can be functional and stay under

the radar, or it can be its own work of art,”

explains Emma. “We’re using lots of luxurious

pendant lights in our show homes to give

a sense of grandeur. These look fabulous in

dining rooms and bedrooms, but can also

transform an entrance hall.

“In one of our new show homes we’ve used

a pendant light fitting to make a statement in

the grand hallway, using an oversized brown

and cream nine-light chandelier. Low-hung

lighting above dining tables can create a

really intimate atmosphere and table lamps

are also an elegant way to dress a formal

lounge. Tying in the metallic trend, carved

bronze and brass lamps can create warmth

and also look great combined with leather for

a very traditional, heritage feel.”

ALL ABOARD THE HEADBOARD TRENDFeature walls are a great way to put your

own unique design stamp on a new home

and can work particularly well in a bedroom.

However, wallpaper has been replaced

with a stronger emphasis on oversized

feature headboards, which can completely

transform a room.

“Headboards add real interest and can

be a great way to introduce texture and

different materials around the home,”

Emma adds. “This year we’re seeing lots of

contrasting piping and deep buttoning, as it

creates quite a striking effect. For example,

a large navy headboard with lighter piping

around the edge is one way you could

introduce the bold colour trend without

breaking the bank or risking clashing with

your existing furniture.”

Emma’s key trends for autumn/winter

2014/15 can be seen in Redrow’s

show homes across England and Wales.

The colder weather might be upon us, but there are still measures you can take to keep your outside space looking fabulous. We hear from the professionals, who offer some key pointers on how to get your garden ready for the frostier months and make it an eco-friendly haven for wildlife

WALKING IN A WINTER WONDERLANDPREPARING YOUR GARDEN FOR WINTERAs well as decorating your new Redrow

home just as you choose, your garden is

also a blank canvas for you to put your own

unique stamp on. It’s an extension of your

living space and, even when the days get

colder and the nights draw in, it can still be

a place to enjoy – although that might be

mainly from the window of your warm and

cosy Redrow home!

We spoke to landscape gardener Mark

Oliver, of Wildwood Landscapes, to get his

tips on how to prepare your garden for its

annual winter battle with Mother Nature. The

key for any homeowner, he says, is getting

preparation underway early.

“The most important thing is planning

ahead,” he explains. “Tidy your borders by

forking over soil and removing any weeds

and debris. Spiking and scarifying any lawn

areas can also help with draining and remove

any thatch that builds up.

“Two things I’d really advise, though, are

pruning your hedges and also topping up

on bark mulch along your borders – both

steps will really give your garden that added

protection against any cold waves.”

Of course, as any green thumb will tell

you, with a remarkable variety of plants

and bulbs available in Britain, winter is still a

perfect time to get growing.

“While it’s true that this is a time for

protecting what you’ve already got, there’s

a staggering amount of deciduous trees

and plants that are all ripe for planting now,”

Mark continues. “You might not think it, but

those cold months between November and

March really are the time to get planting,

planning and filling any vacant border areas

you may have – you’ll really start to see

the benefit come April.”

Finally, then, can Mark

recommend a plant of the season?

“I’d be going for a plant called

Cotinus ‘Flame’ (pictured)– a

deciduous shrub that offers its

owners lush green foliage and

flowers in the summer and fantastic orange

and red foliage in winter,” he says. “The

plant only needs about four years to reach

its ultimate height and it really is about as

resilient and hardy as they come.”

Mark Oliver is a landscaper whose

company Wildwood Landscapes is based

in Easingwold, North Yorkshire and was

responsible for Redrow’s show home

gardens at its Oaklands development.

GARDENING

CREATE A HOME FOR NATURE IN YOUR GARDEN THIS WINTERSo, now your hedges are perfectly pruned

and your borders ready to burst with buds in

the spring, Redrow’s Sustainability Manager,

Nicola Owen, has some great advice on how

you can encourage wildlife to your garden

this winter.

“Autumn is definitely time for the

birdfeeders to go up if you haven’t done so

already,” she says. “Although it’s important to

remember that the food you provide is only

a supplement – a few snacks could make a

big difference in extreme weather or help to

feed demanding young.

“Planting a tree or even a hedge can help

– winter is the best time for tree planting, but

you need to choose a day when the ground

is not frozen. Choose trees or hedge plants

such as hawthorn, rowan and holly, as these

will provide berries for birds in winter, as well

as places to nest in the spring.”

A SMALL PROJECT TO LOOK

AFTER FROGS AND TOADS

THIS WINTER

When to do this project: Autumn/winter

Difficulty: Four out of five

How long does it take: Three to four hours

You’ll need: Brick, rubble, soil, leaf litter,

logs, brash, spade, fork, shovel, secateurs

and a wheelbarrow

• Frogs and toads love humid conditions, so

a great place to dig for them is in a damp

and partially shaded area

• Ideally you want a hole that you can stand

in up to mid-calf; the size depends partly

on how big your garden is

• Line the bottom of the hole with brick

rubble, then cover with soil as well as

stones, leaf litter, logs and brash. Repeat

this process until your pile of rubble is

visible above ground

• For the second to last layer, add some large

pieces of concrete, making sure to leave

gaps big enough for creatures to get in

• Finally, top the whole thing off with a thin

layer of soil and woody brash, taking care

not to block off the gaps

TIPS FOR FEEDING WINTER BIRDS FROM THE ROYAL SOCIETY

FOR THE PROTECTION OF BIRDS (RSPB)

• Put out fatballs, dried or soft fruit, mild cheese, porridge oats, unsalted nuts and

seeds, leftover mince pies and Christmas cake, mealworms, cooked rice, pasta, potato

(minus the skins) and pastry

• Put out water for birds to bathe in and drink (add a twig or ping pong ball to stop it freezing!)

• Set feeders up in quiet areas close to trees

• Try to fill the feeders around midday

• Plant a prickly bush either around the birdfeeder or table or nearby to stop other

animals taking the food and for birds to hide in

• Put up a bird box for smaller birds to shelter in and for birds to mate in later on

FINALLY, IF YOU’RE KEEN TO CREATE A SUSTAINABLE GARDEN THAT WORKS HARD THROUGHOUT EVERY SEASON, WE’VE GOT THREE SUGGESTIONS FOR WINTER COMPOSTING:

• Create a roof or place a tarp over your compost pile – this protects it from unwanted precipitation

• Block it in – build a protective barrier around your pile or surround your compost with existing

garden debris

• Shred it – shredding the material in the pile will allow it to heat more uniformly and will insulate

it from outside temperature extremes

DRESSING YOUR HOME FOR SALE

BOOST YOUR

If you’re struggling to sell your property, there are several simple and inexpensive things

you can do before considering lowering the price. Our Group Interior Design Manager,

Emma Brindley, looks at the best ways to attract buyers

SELLING POWER

DEFINE YOUR ROOMS

Rooms will be much more appealing to buyers

if they have a specific purpose. Make sure each

room is set for its designated intention – if it’s a

three-bedroom house, ensure it is just that, as

bedrooms add more value to properties than

studies or store rooms.

DE-CLUTTER AND CLEAN

An untidy home can often seem small and

disorganised, so de-cluttering will help buyers

to visualise how the house will look when

they’ve moved in. Minimise lotions and potions

in the bathroom, put excess clothes away, thin

out books on the bookcase and clear surfaces

in the kitchen as much as possible. Then, it’s

time to give everything a thorough clean and

maybe light some scented candles to make

your home even more inviting.

NATURAL COLOURS

Most buyers prefer natural colours to

bold tones as they can make a room feel

brighter and more spacious. Colour can

be added with accessories and the right

lighting can also help to enhance the

space.

MAKE AN IMPRESSION

First impressions really do count. You can

maximise your home’s kerb appeal by

making sure there is no litter in the front

garden, pathways are clear, the gate isn’t

broken and the front door is painted. Plant

pots can help add a splash of colour and

you can always take them with you when

you go. The hallway is equally important –

maybe add a mirror to make it look bigger

and create that ‘wow’ factor as people

cross the threshold.

DEFERRED JOBS

If there are various DIY jobs that you’ve

been putting off for ages, start working

your way through them. Things like

dripping taps, broken blinds, peeling

paint and squeaky hinges are all off-

putting to buyers and can be fixed

quickly and easily.

When your home has been lightened, brightened, de-cluttered and updated, the next

step is to start the actual selling process. Redrow can help here too, as its Mastermove

scheme can alleviate all the stress of selling in three easy steps:

• Simply find your ideal new Redrow home, register with Mastermove and pay a fully

refundable registration fee (paid back on completion)

• Redrow will arrange for two to three valuations to be carried out on your current

house and agree a selling price with you. They’ll then liaise with one of their tried

and trusted local estate agents to market your property for you at no cost. Redrow

will even pay all your estate agent’s fees

• With your old house sold, you are then ready to proceed with the purchase of

your new Redrow home and move in as soon as it’s ready

CASE STUDIES

HOW REDROW CAN HELP GET YOU MOVINGSo, you’ve decided it’s time to move, but there’s an obstacle in your way. Perhaps you have a house to sell or don’t have a large cash deposit or substantial equity in your current home. These factors needn’t be a barrier, as Redrow has a range of incentives available to help make moving as simple and straightforward as possible. Exquisite has spoken to some of the housebuilder’s newest homeowners about their experiences. Here are what just a few of them had to say…

April Davies, Summerhill Park, Liverpool, secured her dream home using Redrow’s Early Bird scheme

If you know which Redrow home you want to buy, but it’s yet to be offi cially released for sale, you could make an ‘Early Bird’ reservation, giving you fi rst refusal when your preferred property comes onto the market.

“We looked at lots of houses before deciding on a three-bedroom Broadway from Redrow,” says April. “It hadn’t been released for sale yet, but we told the sales consultant which property we wanted to buy. We then fi lled in a form and paid a £500 refundable deposit to make an ‘Early Bird’ reservation, which meant that Redrow would let us know when it was available to buy and give us fi rst dibs on it. A couple of weeks later we reserved our home and didn’t have a nervous wait worrying that someone would beat us to it.”

Jemma Campanaro, Tove Grange, Towcester moved with Mastermove

If you’re already a homeowner, Redrow’s Mastermove service could help you to secure a buyer for the property you want to move from. They’ll arrange valuations on your house, market it through a local agent and even pay your agent’s fees.

“We already had a sale lined up for our old home and reserved a four-bedroom property from Redrow, but were disappointed when our buyer pulled out,” says Jemma. “We really wanted to move and feared we’d miss out. We were relieved when the sales consultant told us we could sell up and move quickly and simply with Mastermove. Redrow enlisted a trusted local agent to market our house and the fi rst people who viewed it bought it, so Mastermove worked out really well for us; especially as Redrow paid the estate agent’s fees!”

Jemma Campanaro, Tove

Levy Jeffery, Orchard Mews, Larchfi eld used Help to Buy to purchase his fi rst home

Help to Buy means you could reduce the initial cost of owning a brand new home. Those who opt to take out a 20% equity loan via Help to Buy should only need a relatively small deposit of 5% of the purchase price, plus a 75% mortgage from their chosen lender. The valuable incentive is available on new build homes in England priced at up to £600,000. Redrow can now also offer Help to Buy in Wales, on homes priced at up to £300,000.

“I’d become sick and tired of landlords ripping us off – it felt like all of my money was going into some kind of black hole,” says Levy. “After just four months of hard work and plenty of saving, Sophie and I had all the money we needed for a deposit. I couldn’t believe how lucky we’d been. Help to Buy seemed to come along at the perfect time for us – there’s no question in my mind that we’d still be in my mum’s place now if it wasn’t for this scheme.”

If you’re getting ready to make that big move, you’ll no doubt be experiencing a mix of excitement and nerves, particularly when it comes to how your children will adapt to a new environment. Here we present some top tips on how to make the kids feel right at home

Moving home can be a rollercoaster of emotions for the

whole family. While it’s often very exciting, making a

fresh start and a longed-for step up the property ladder

can also be stressful, especially for children, who may take time to

adjust to their new environment. That’s why Redrow has compiled

this handy guide to make moving home with kids fun, with the

help of expert Professor Neil Humphrey, a psychologist at The

University of Manchester.

TIP ONE:

INVOLVE As our expert says: “It’s helpful for parents to talk to children about the

impending move as far in advance as possible, and get them involved

in the process so that they feel part of what is going on.”

HERE ARE SOME EFFECTIVE WAYS TO GET

THE KIDS INVOLVED:

■ Ask for their opinion at the start of your property search.

What would they look for in a house? It may be a large

garden or a bigger bedroom

■ Bring your child to family-friendly open days and to look

around show homes, so that they feel more familiar with

the concept of a ‘new house’

■ Once you’ve moved in, let them customise their bedroom.

Perhaps they can pick the wall colour or bring with them

their favourite pieces of furniture or posters from their

previous room

TIP TWO:

MOVING DAY This can be very stressful for adults who are responsible for making

sure it all runs smoothly. However, youngsters can feel stressed too

if they don’t understand what’s happening. Prior to moving day,

Neil advises: “As far as possible adults can reduce any anxieties by

explaining what is going to happen and when e.g. When is moving

day? What happens on moving day? Who is involved?”

HERE ARE SOME EASY TIPS TO ENSURE MOVING DAY GOES

WITHOUT A HITCH:

■ Put a calendar on the wall with the date clearly marked

■ Explain to your children if a removal company will be

involved and introduce them on the day – friendly faces

make the whole process much easier

■ Let kids pack their favourite toys and label their box so that

they feel a sense of responsibility

■ Give them a job to do – this may be making sure one of

their toys is well looked after or packed up

TIP THREE:

ROUTINEWhile some change is inevitable when moving to a new house,

it’s important to reinforce older routines, so that children can take

comfort from what they know. “When routines are changed, there

are lots of unknowns and feelings of uncertainty,” explains Neil.

“There may also be sadness with having to say goodbye to friends

and favourite places.”

HERE ARE SOME GREAT IDEAS FOR HELPING

YOUR CHILD FEEL AT HOME:

■ Do you watch the television on a Saturday morning

together? If so, try to do it the first Saturday in your

new house

■ Read them a bedtime story with a warm drink

on the first night so that they go to bed feeling

reassured and secure

■ Eat a family meal together in your new home and talk

about the move, asking your kids how they feel it went

TIP FOUR:

SOCIAL LIFEWhen moving to a new home or area, integrating your child

within the local community as soon as possible is the best way to

ensure they settle quickly. Our expert notes: “Children may take

more time to adjust to the social changes and transitions such as

friends and school, than the physical ones such as getting used to

their new house or room.”

HERE ARE SOME EASY WAYS TO HELP YOUR CHILD

GET TO GRIPS WITH THEIR NEW AREA:

■ Encourage them to join a sports team or afterschool clubs,

especially if they were a member of a similar club where

they used to live

■ Carpooling is a great way to meet other children and save

money, so find out which children at their new school live

nearby. If you’re close enough and they’re old enough, find

out if any of their classmates can walk to school with your

son or daughter

■ A coffee morning for local parents is a great way for you

to make new friends, as well as meeting potential pals for

your kids

NHBC

THE BENEFITS OF BUYING NEW

Offering greater affordability and protection, new-build homes are an increasingly popular option for both aspiring and existing homeowners. We hear from the experts at the National House Building Council (NHBC), who offer some key reasons why a brand

new home could be the right move for you

Buying a house is one of the biggest

investments you will ever make in

your life. So, whether you’re a first-

time buyer or are looking to move up the

property ladder, there’s no doubt that you

will face a number of choices and decisions.

Before you start the hunt for the house

of your dreams, it’s a good idea to have

a long, hard think about exactly what

you want and need from a property. Is

it location? Running costs? Space? At

NHBC, the leading standard-setting body

and warranty provider of new homes, we

recently carried out a survey with over

1,000 new homeowners. They told us that

design was the thing they loved most about

their new-build home, followed by location,

size and space.

So, with more new homes being built than

before the end of the recession, now is as

good a time as any to consider buying a

new-build home. Here are just a few reasons

why you should:

A BLANK CANVASNew-build homes have neutral interiors, free

from any decorating disasters of previous

owners. They also come with a similar fresh

start in the garden, allowing buyers to

design and plant to their preferred taste.

SHORTER PROPERTY CHAINLong chains can be extremely stressful; with

a new home this is minimised because there

is no threat of the seller accepting amatuer

offer elsewhere or the vendor changing their

mind about moving. You will be at the end

of the selling chain and can concentrate your

efforts on packing up and moving out.

LOWER RUNNING COSTSNew homes are built with higher levels of

insulation and have more efficient heating

systems than ever before; some may even

come with renewable technologies that

improve efficiency even more. Better energy

efficiency means a reduction in carbon

emissions and lower heating bills.

10-YEAR WARRANTYAround 80% of new homes are covered by

NHBC’s leading 10-year Buildmark warranty

and insurance, which currently protects

1.6million homes across the UK. Check that

the builder is registered with NHBC before

you visit at www.nhbc.co.uk and ask for

a copy of the policy document when you

reserve your home.

ADDED CONSUMER PROTECTIONWorking with the industry, NHBC has

developed the Consumer Code for

Home Builders. The Code protects new

homebuyers by ensuring that they are

treated fairly, that they are fully informed

about their purchase and their consumer

rights before and after they move in, and

that they are provided with a suitable

redress scheme to deal with complaints.

More information can be found at

www.consumercodeforhomebuilders.com

INCENTIVE SCHEMESAs well as the Government-backed

Help to Buy scheme, some housebuilders

operate their own buyer incentive schemes

such as part exchange on an old house,

payment of stamp duty, help with removal

costs and part-funded deposits. Many

developers also offer properties off-plan,

meaning homeowners reserving before

the house is built can choose their desired

plot and personalise the house to their

individual needs.

BE NOTICEDYou’re bound to get admiring glances from your neighbours when you drive up in the all-new Audi TT Coupé or 310PS TTS with their high-tech lightweight construction, all-digital virtual cockpit and sub-five-second sprint ability

T he sports car that in 1998

emphatically defined the Audi

design philosophy and paved the

way for the brand’s current success has been

respectfully updated and comprehensively

re-engineered for its third generation. It

is again characterised by innovation in

construction, engine design and technological

input, the latter being particularly evident in

its new all-digital Audi virtual cockpit.

THE EXTERIOR When the first-generation Audi TT made its

debut in 1998, its design was seen as nothing

short of revolutionary – with its strictly

geometrical lines, it struck out in a new stylistic

direction that arguably changed the course

of modern-day car design, and it has gone

on to achieve iconic status. For the third TT

generation, the Audi designers have returned

to many of these ideas and placed them in a

new context that is as dynamic as it is diverse.

The front of the new TT is dominated by

horizontal lines. The Singleframe grille is much

broader and flatter than that of the previous

model, with a powerful line dividing it into two

zones. Starting in the top corners of the grille,

sharp contours run in a V across the bonnet,

which bears the four Audi rings – as on the

Audi R8 high-performance sports car.

The flat headlights give the car a

determined look. Xenon plus units are

standard, with LED headlights or units using

the pioneering Audi Matrix LED technology

first seen in the A8 luxury saloon available as

optional extras.

The Matrix LED units each incorporate

12 separate controllable LEDs, which form

the high beam and can be individually shut

off when sensors detect traffic ahead or

approaching to ‘divert’ the beam around

other road users without diminishing its

effectiveness.

Depending on the version or options

chosen, the new TT sits on wheels ranging

from 17 inches to 20 inches in size, helping

to convey an impression of lean muscularity

from the side.

At the rear, horizontal lines give the TT

real presence. When the optional LED and

Audi Matrix LED headlights are specified,

the tail lights also have dynamic indicators.

In parallel with the headlights, a strip in

each tail light also forms a daytime running

light contour – another Audi innovation.

The third brake light is an extremely narrow

strip positioned under the edge of the rear

spoiler. It plays an essential part in defining

the tail light silhouette.

All ‘standard’ models have two large round

exhaust tailpipes, which are again reminiscent

of the original TT. Like all Audi S models, the

TTS exhales through four oval tailpipes.

THE BODY Lightweight construction is one of Audi’s

greatest areas of expertise. The second-

generation Audi TT already featured an

Audi Space Frame (ASF) body comprising

aluminium and steel. For the new TT, Audi has

taken this composite construction principle

even further, in line with its philosophy of ‘the

right amount of the right material in the right

place for optimal functions’.

The low overall weight is further proof of

Audi’s expertise in lightweight construction.

It impacts particularly positively where

acceleration, handling and fuel consumption

are concerned.

THE INTERIORThe inside is the embodiment of the sports

car’s character. As in the exterior, flowing

curves, notably in the centre tunnel console

and door panels, are combined with horizontal

lines and surfaces that emphasise width.

for ALL THE RIGHT REASONS

EXQ_3_Redrow_Motoring_XR.indd 80 21/10/2014 16:57

redrow.co.uk 81

MOTORING

In the cabin the designers worked on

the basis of ‘less is more’, just as they did

externally. Pure, clean lines underscore both

the lightness and the uncompromising focus

of the car. They are particularly evident in the

impressively slender instrument panel, which

has been made possible by combining the

instrument cluster and MMI screen in a central,

digital unit – the so-called Audi virtual cockpit

- and by repositioning the controls for the air

conditioning system in the air vents.

Seen from above, the instrument panel

resembles the wing of an aircraft; the round air

vents – a classic TT feature – are reminiscent

of jet engines with their turbine-like design.

The vents also contain all the controls for the

air conditioning system, including seat heating

where applicable, temperature, direction, air

distribution and air flow strength.

The standard sports seats have integrated

head restraints and are positioned lower than

their predecessors in the outgoing model.

They are also more than five kilograms lighter.

“The Audi TT is the epitome of an authentic design

icon and a top-performance driving

machine”

MOTORING

ADVERTAs an option – and as standard in the TTS

– there are newly developed S sport seats

with highly contoured and pneumatically

adjustable side sections that are exceptionally

comfortable and provide excellent support.

The new multifunction steering wheel has

a flattened rim, while aluminium-look clasps

encompass the spokes. It also has a driver

airbag that takes up 40% less space without

compromising safety, and hence emphasises

the sense of visual lightness.

Countless details demonstrate the

considerable focus that Audi places on

interior design and craftsmanship. They

include the newly designed, split gear

lever, the very precisely engaging MMI

rotary pushbutton and the finely finished

loudspeaker covers with light guides in the

optional Bang & Olufsen sound system.

As a 2+2 seater, the new Audi TT is a sports

car that is suitable for everyday use. The load

area has a capacity of 305 litres, which is 13

litres more than before, and can be extended

by folding the rear seat backrests forwards.

THE COLOURS The new Audi TT offers a far more

distinct and vivid range of colours than its

predecessor. There are 11 exterior colours,

one of which is exclusively reserved for S line

models. Seven of the colours in the range

are new for the TT, and two of these are

completely new for Audi: Nano Grey and

Tango Red. There are also two additional

paints available for the TTS – crystal-effect

Panther Black and the highly expressive

Sepang Blue.

There is a completely new range of colours

for the interior, too – the Audi TT and the TTS

each offer a choice of three interior colours.

For the first time, Audi is offering a two-tone

interior including contrasting stitching for S

line models.

Naturally, the Audi TTS is the peak

performer. It covers the standard sprint in 4.7

seconds and its top speed is electronically

governed at 155mph. Here, the 2.0 TFSI

produces 380 Nm (280.27 lb-ft) of torque

between 1,800 and 5,500 rpm. Controllable

flaps in the exhaust system modulate the

sound and make it even richer. A manual

transmission is standard, with an S tronic

transmission incorporating launch control,

which regulates maximum acceleration from

a standstill, available as an option.

With its elaborate chassis design and firm

setup, the new Audi TT handles superbly in

all situations. The body is lowered by 10mm

in S line versions, in the TTS and wherever

Audi magnetic ride is fitted.herever Audi

magnetic ride is fitted.

An Audi icon redefined - The all-new Audi TT

and 310PS TTS Coupés have been redesigned

from the ground up to deliver much improved

performance with greater efficiency, and also

offer innovations such as the new all-digital

Audi virtual cockpit.

ADVERTAntwerp Travel to Antwerp with only one change of train - this doesn’t exactly sound like a difficult way to head off for a relaxing city break in Belgium. The journey to the ‘capital of diamonds’ will take you less than four hours from Central London via Brussels - giving you a chance to explore two cities if you so wish.

This place is home to around 1,500 businesses dealing in precious gems, while four exchanges are active in the diamond district of the city. It is also Belgium’s second largest city and boasts the second biggest port in Europe. You can head to the Grote Markt (main square) and see the imposing Cathedral of Our Lady, the ornate Hotel de Ville and the legendary statue of Brabo.

Travelling with Eurostar to Antwerp provides you with you a quick and easy check-in, reserved seating and a bar buffet serving light refreshments – although the journey isn’t long, it’s a great place to stretch your legs and make the most of the trip. A mini-break is a fantastic way to experience everything this sparkling city has to offer. Travel and accommodation at the four star Plaza Hotel starts from just £222.50.

Lille Situated close to the Belgian border, Lille offers a delightful blend of French and Flemish style, filled with grand architecture and cobble-stoned streets. You can climb to the top of Europe's tallest Belfry at the town hall; then visit the Palais des Beaux-Arts, the second largest museum in France after the Louvre. Relax and take your time as you wander around the narrow streets filled with antique shops and art galleries and pay a visit to Europe's biggest bookshop, the Furet du Nord. If all that sightseeing works up a bit of an appetite, try finding a spot at one of the street cafés and enjoy some moules-frites with a locally brewed beer, or treat yourself to something tasty from one of the many little patisseries or chocolate shops.

This exciting break is really easy with a comfortable journey from London on the Lille Eurostar; you can take in the sights and sounds of this beautiful city in an hour and a half ’s journey. Breaks to Lille include a stay at a hotel, so you can take some time to relax before your next day of sightseeing. They offer three nights for two when staying at the three-star Art Deco Euralille Hotel on a break priced from £160.

WEEKEND BREAKS

ADVERTBruges Just hop onto the Eurostar in London and you will be whisked directly to Brussels, where you can then catch a connecting train to take you on to Bruges. In just four hours, you will arrive relaxed and refreshed at your destination; a mini-break has never seemed so appealing.

Bruges by Eurostar is a great way to experience everything this medieval city has to offer. Stroll through the busy squares, refreshing parks and quiet, cobbled streets, or choose an intimate cruise on the romantic

canals and then take in some Flemish art. If you’re in need of a rest, you could always sample one of the countless restaurants, tea houses and pavement cafés in the city. Next, try indulging in fresh-from-the-sea

mussels with chips and mayonnaise, all washed down with a specialty Belgian beer. Bruges has its very own chocolate museum, boutiques, trail and fair, making this Belgian town the ideal place for chocolate

lovers! A Bruges break, with the three nights for two people offer, starts from £181.50.

Ghent Cobbled streets, striking architecture and peaceful waterways easily make Ghent one of Belgium's most popular mini-break destinations. From the prominent Castle of the Counts to the picturesque medieval town centre, 14th century Belfry and the UNESCO sights of the Beguinages, Ghent is home to some simply outstanding properties. This stunning architecture combined with great shopping choices and lively cafés and restaurants,

make Ghent ideal for a short break. With Eurostar you can book a hotel to make your trip more relaxing and give yourself plenty of time to explore Belgium's second largest port town. The train takes

just under three hours from St Pancras and you can add a return train trip into London from your local station to help make your journey hassle-free. A Ghent getaway is

available from just £180.50 under the three nights for two offers.

ILKLEY MOORToday, people still use the historic Ilkey Moor for

walking and horse riding, although the range of

activities has broadened. It all begins with the

New Year’s Day dip at White Wells. After that

comes the fell run and the spring flowers. The

summer is a great time for tourism and autumn

sees the attraction of the heather, the moor’s

great glory and bilberries for gathering. The

moor is a great place for relaxation and a perfect

platform to look out over the Wharfedale ward

– especially on Bonfire Night. The rocks are

also a fine vantage point for watching the skies.

Although no one lives here now, people still love

to be involved with the moor and its rocks.
