Athlete of the Month: Trish Kable
Mother, Grandmother… CrossFit Athlete
February 2014
I was very blessed to become a grandmother in March 2012, which prompted me to have a long hard think about what sort of a grandmother and role model I wanted to be for my beautiful granddaughter. Despite always being on diet, I had packed on 14kg in as many years, so I had a weight issue; and my fitness was zero -‐ I last worked up a mild sweat in a ballet class 38 years before. I knew I had to make some key changes if I was going to be a fitter and healthier granny!
My son Steven had decided to give CrossFit a go after talking to Norma Logan and I decided to bite the bullet and signed up with him for the last Onramp of 2012. Unfortunately I couldn’t finish that Onramp, but I'd already glimpsed the benefits after only three weeks. I had to wait for the first Onramp of 2013 to get back into it and Steven and I badgered my daughter, Nicole, into signing up too.
Since joining CrossFit I’ve moved to a Paleo diet and this combination has made an enormous difference to how I look, how I feel about myself. I sleep better and my energy levels have never been better. So far I'm down 2 dress sizes, which I’m pretty happy about.
I’d really recommend the transformation challenge -‐ I learned so much.
CrossFit is about challenging yourself and the sense of real achievement is enormously satisfying and motivating. The coaches and people at CFEA are truly an incredible bunch, and with their help and encouragement I have accomplished things I never thought I was capable of doing. Just do it.

Getting to know Trish Favourite CrossFit exercise Power lifting. I love the weights, probably because I've seen such enormous improvement in my ability over the year. Most hated CrossFit exercise I really battle with the cardio stuff and my squats are a work in progress too, so it has to be wall balls. Favorite place to eat a Paleo-‐ish meal in Auckland? De Fontein for mussels in curry, coconut cream or Benjarong in Howick for Thai. I’m very lucky that I have a supportive husband who has taken on the Paleo way and cooks for me most nights while I'm at the box. The song that gets you pumped up for a workout? I enjoy all the music the coaches put on, the louder, the more beat, the better! The last thing you ate? Scrambles eggs, salmon and tomato Proudest accomplishment at CrossFit? Starting from a zero base, almost everything is proud accomplishment. When I started I couldn't run 200 meters without stopping and walking part of the way; I couldn't do a sit-‐up at all for the first four months, I couldn't squat, I couldn’t skip ...the list goes on. On Saturday I was aiming for 1 and managed 12 DU’s! What are your goals for 2014? Continue to get stronger and fitter, but more specifically, do my best at this year’s CrossFit Open. And nail double unders!
Name a CFEA member that has inspired you? What I really admire is seeing people put their everything into achieving a goal and not being discouraged, even if they fail. They're real winners and my inspiration.
