A Message from the County Executive...

After a summer filled with swimming, camps, sports and outdoor

adventures, kids have returned to school and our pools and facilities

are a little quieter. The Parks Department had a busy summer hosting lots of

events such as summer camps, the FEAST in the Park food truck events (which will

continue on through September) and Farm Fridays at Suson Park. One of the most

exciting events this summer was the opening “Go Ape,” a tree-top adventure course

in Creve Coeur Park. This new attraction offers residents and tourists of the St. Louis

Metropolitan area a unique outdoor experience that allows participants to live life

adventurously and experience Creve Coeur Park from a new vantage point - from 40

feet up in the trees.

Even as the days grow shorter and the temperatures plunge, Parks stays busy running programs,

events and activities because our mission to provide high-quality recreation is a year-round pursuit.

As you will see in this issue of our Activity Guide, our Parks department provides various opportunities

to keep you and your family busy throughout this fall and winter. Our largest event of the year, Winter

Wonderland in Tilles Park, begins in November and we invite you to bring your friends and family to

experience this display of one million twinkling lights that will create holiday memories that will never be

forgotten. Honorable Charlie A. Dooley

Social connections not only give us pleasure, but they also influence our health? People who have strong relationships with family and friends have been shown to be happier, have fewer health problems, and live longer.

Social connections help relieve harmful levels of stress, which can harm the heart’s arteries, gut function, insulin regulation, and the immune system.

Will we have any Fall Color of the fi rst crimson leaves of autumn, and learn about fall blooming crocus very similar to the spring blooming crocus. The ravages of heat, storms, drought, and humidity make the late summer garden appear so worn out that the freshness of newly emerging fall crocus and colchicum bulbs, Pansies, our cool weather crop are a breath of fresh air. One glimpse and you’ll suddenly want to bite into a crisp apple, or go on a hayride in a County Park, check it out in our Activity Guide www.stlouisco.com/parks. Some say nature saves her biggest show for fall, but I feel you need to appreciate each season Mother Nature has to give us.

Psychologists believe that creative play teaches children a number of important skills: how to improve memory, increase flexible thinking, control emotions and resist impulsive behavior. Moreover, creative play with other children gives each child an opportunity to practice these mind-expanding and self-regulating skills.
