A Note from William FordWell San Marcos, its that time again. Time to wrap up the fun activities that summer

has to offer and get ready to bring in all the excitement that comes with fall and winter.

There is much to be grateful for, and the Parks and Recreation Department would like

to express our thanks to you for your continued support and participation that makes

our programs and events what they are!

For three years in a row, San Marcos has been named the nations fastest-growing city.

In order to keep up with that growth, we are doing more to provide a better customer

service experience for our community. By using a new program called ActiveNet, online

registration is easier and more user-friendly than ever before.

Our residents and visitors are important to us and the Parks and Recreation

Department is proud to work hard so we can serve everyone. I hope this guide

provides you with the information needed to utilize all there is. We look forward to

seeing you enjoy the facilities, parks, and river that this city has. Be safe, and stay

    active!

  • 40 San Marcos Parks & Recreation Department Activity Guide - September 2015 - February 2016

San Marcos enjoys a beautiful river flowing through the city and five natural areas with both handicap (ADA) trails and single-track hiking and biking trails. Maps detailing street addresses for the trail heads, trail lengths and elevation are located at http://smgreenbelt.org/SMNaturalAreas.htm and can be found at the Parks and Recreation Office, 401 E. Hopkins Street, or in new large display maps at the kiosk of each trail head.

Several groups offer regular hikes and activities on trails along the river or in one of the natural areas. A monthly birding hike starts off early in the morning on the first Saturday of each month. Hikes generally last 1 to 1 and 1/2 hours depending on the weather and number of birds seen. Many of the hikes are very conducive to sighting a variety of Central Texas birds. The river and Spring Lake bring water birds including herons, kingfishers, ducks, cormorants and egrets. Natural areas with mature trees are abundant with woodpeckers, song birds such as chickadees, mockingbirds, wrens, warblers, sparrows and finches. Weve seen Painted Buntings at Ringtail Ridge and two natural areas are prime habitat for the Golden Cheek warbler. Contact [email protected]

The Texas Outdoors Woman Network (TOWN San Marcos Chapter) leads weekly hikes in the natural areas for exploration of fauna and flora. These educational hikes are often led by a Texas Master Naturalist and are open to everyone. Contact [email protected]

Another group is the San Marcos Area Trail Walkers, a Meet Up group on the social media network. Theyre hikes are more social and often end with a meal at a local restaurant. They are held more than twice a week and get in some walking exercise before partaking in a repast. Contact http://www.meetup.com/San-Marcos-area-trail-walkers/

This is just a sampling of groups that obtain maximum benefit of the natural areas. There are trail running groups, mountain biking groups and even mothers with youngsters who enjoy getting outside. The San Marcos Greenbelt Alliance does trail maintenance on Thursday mornings, another group works in Sessom Creek on Saturdays and a third group does restoration (invasive removal and re-seeding) on Sundays.
