Director’s MessageM. Darrell LoveletteDirector of Parks & Recreation

In an effort to keep everyone informed, please read the brief summaries below. Over the course of the year,

updates will be given through social media and at our monthly Parks Advisory Board meetings which are

held at the Municipal Office Building the third Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm. A summary of what to

expect and look forward to is:

Sadie Thomas Park Swimming Pool - Our consultant is working on the design of a new leisure style pool

for this park. Earlier in the year the City surveyed our residents to find out what type of aquatic facility

they would like to see built. We received 460 responses with 349 favoring a pool with a zero entry, splash

elements and a place to swim lap lanes. The consultant’s design will reflect the resident’s wishes while

staying within the $950,000 budget. The design of the pool will be presented at the end of August. Con-

struction should start in October and be completed by March, 2016.

Williamson Park Skate Park - Grindline Skate Parks is our design/build contractor for this project. Cur-

rently, they are working on construction specifications for the final design. The park will be a 17,500

square foot facility and will offer challenges to skaters and bikers of all abilities. Construction is expected

to start in the fall with the Grand Opening of the park to occur in late spring, 2016.

Bryan Aquatic Center Renovations - In 2015 the City hired a consultant, Brannon Corporation, to perform

an Aquatic Facility Inventory for our four aquatic facilities. The Bryan Aquatic Center was part of that in-

ventory and recommendations were made to renovate, upgrade and improve the facility. In the FY16 bud-

get there is funding available to address some of their recommendations. We are now working with them

to draw up a list of improvements that should be done first and fit within available funding. It is expected

that the work will start in the fall and conclude early in 2016. The pool will be closed but the changes

and improvements will be worth the effort. Projects being considered include liner replacement, concrete

bulkhead, recreation side renovations, and upgrades to the filter room.

Park System Renovations - Over the course of the last two years staff has been working on a Parks

Improvement Plan to maintain, improve, and renovate our parks and related amenities. The plan contains

capital projects and operation and maintenance needs. In the FY16 budget funding has been set aside

to start addressing the listed operation and maintenance needs. These needs are being prioritized and

will be addressed accordingly. Over the next year residents should see a number of changes in the park

which could include renovations and/or replacement of equipment; renovated turf; renovated landscaping;

better lighting; structures cleaned and repainted; repairs to trails; and more.

A....................

s we close out 2015 and look forward to the start of 2016, there is excitement in the air as we

embark on a number of Park projects and a variety of programs, both old and new. The next

12 months promise to be exciting and will offer everyone an opportunity to enjoy new facili-

ties, improved facilities and new programs throughout the year.

Page 7: Bryan Parks and Recreation 2015 Fall and Winter Activity Guide

Parks Master Plan - In July, 2015, Freese Nichols was hired to assist the City of Bryan to update and

develop a new Comprehensive Plan and Parks Master Plan. On August 26 and 27, the process started

with a tour of the city and a series of meetings between the consultant, stakeholders, city staff and the

Comprehensive Plan Advisory Committee (CPAC). This committee will have the opportunity to provide

input throughout the preparation of the Plan and help craft the goals and objectives of the Plan. The

CPAC is a committee which is comprised of 27 individuals representing city boards and commissions

and a number of organizations throughout the city. The Parks Master Plan was last approved in 2002.

Freese Nichols put together an excellent team and is teamed up with Dunkin Sims Stoffels Inc. who will be

responsible for the development of the Parks Master Plan.

Bryan City Cemetery Expansion - The Bryan City Cemetery had less than a two year supply of open spaces

left. However, eighteen acres of land had been purchased years ago in anticipation of this future need.

Well, it is now time to expand the cemetery. In September the City will be go out to bid to develop the addi-

tional 18 acres. The work should be completed in the spring of 2016. There will be over 800 lots available

with 12 spaces per lot which will address the need for many years to come.

Recreation Division Programs - Over the last couple years this division has been adding a few programs

per year and redefining some old programs to better meet the needs of our residents. To date we have

had good success and have had record participation in a number of programs. This effort will continue

this year with the addition of new programs, expansion of some existing and reintroduction of others.

Examples of some of these programs include expanding our Culinary offerings, a Kickball League, Adult

Volleyball League, Monthly Special Events, a Walking Club, youth sport camps and clinics, and partnering

with other entities to provide fitness and continuing education classes.

ADVISORY BOARDA special Thank You to the Bryan Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. We are grateful for your insight, your ideas and your commitment to helping keep our parks a vibrant and important part of the good life here in Bryan.

The City of Bryan’s Water-Fit aquatic fitness class is designed to push anyone, of any fitness level. This four (4) week class meets twice a week at the Bryan Aquatic Center and focuses on aerobic conditioning and toning of the body by using the resistance of the water and a variety of challeng-ing aquatic exercises. Water-Fit is definitely a step up from water aerobics and your body will know it when the work out is over. It’s also a great option for those who are limited by orthopedic issues when it comes to traditional land based fitness programs.

The City of Bryan’s water fitness class is fun and challenging for expecting and recent moms! You will use the resistance of the water to tone your body and stay in shape during your pregnancy or after when traditional fitness routines may not be an option.

SWIMMING......trains the cardiovascular system, ...relaxes the mind,...is a low-impact exercise and great whole body workout.

The open water dives will be held on a separate weekend from the classroom & pool portions of the course and will be scheduled with the instructor during your class sessions.

In the PADI Open Water Diver course, you learn to use basic scuba gear including a dive computer, and standard accessories. The equipment you wear will be chosen by an Aggieland Scuba Representative to ensure your comfort throughout the course.
