Activity Guide

Page 2: Fall/Winter 2014 Activity Guide

The beautiful, mild weather got our residents outdoors in force this spring and summer. Our Parks staff stayed very busy hosting a variety of programs and events for the community to enjoy including the very popular FEAST in the Park food truck events.

We are always looking for ways to live out our mission of providing high quality parks, facilities and recreation services that enhance residents’ lives and promote an active lifestyle. This summer we proved that with the opening of our first water trail. This new four-mile trail, which is the first of its kind in the St. Louis area, opened on Creve Coeur Lake and gives our community a new type of water adventure experience. Water trails are also planned at Simpson Park and Spanish Lake Park.

Just because the weather is turning colder doesn’t mean that recreation stops. Please take the opportunity to look through our Activity Guide and see for yourself how St. Louis County Parks can keep you and your family busy throughout the fall and winter. We challenge you to get out and visit parks you haven’t visited and seek out new experiences that will create lasting memories for you and your family.

“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.”—John Dewey

Welcome to the August Meeting, we appreciate & Thank David Sherwood & Staff for their continuous support of the Chil-dren’s Garden Club. Has everyone survived the Heat ? how about the plants in your landscape. Today we will discuss this new season we are about to enter, Fall Gardening.

Hope to see you next month at For the Garden @ Haefners Greenhouse 6703 Telegraph Road, topic is All about Bats.

This is also the First meeting of the Fall Session of the Junior Master Gardener – Golden Rays Series. This program is modeled after the highly successful Master Gardner Program and offers Horticultural and Environmental, Science Education, Leadership, and Life skills. Development though fun and creative activities. This program is committed to helping Young people become good gardeners and good citizens so they can make a positive contribution to their community , school and family. To enroll please let us know , or contact us @ (314) 615-8482 – Tonya or Doug. Or Email us @ [email protected] or [email protected]

Will we have any Fall Color of the fi rst crimson leaves of autumn, and learn about fall blooming crocus very similar to the spring blooming crocus. The ravages of heat, storms, drought, and humidity make the late summer garden appear so worn out that the freshness of newly emerging fall crocus and colchicum bulbs, Pansies, our cool weather crop are a breath of fresh air. One glimpse and you’ll suddenly want to bite into a crisp apple, or go on a hayride in a County Park, check it out in our Activity Guide www.stlouisco.com/parks. Some say nature saves her biggest show for fall, but I feel you need to appreciate each season Mother Nature has to give us.

Kranzberg Exhibition Series 2014Tom Huck: Bugs40 years ago, a young artist named Thomas Lindhardt witnessed an event that changed the world of children’s play. He realized that children were more interested in playing on his brightly colored sculptures rather than admiring them. Now “springers” are an enduring playground favorite, because they encourage children to use their imaginations and to develop their range of motion and movement helping them learn balance and confidence. Local artist Tom Huck has designed three bug “springers” based on a series of his original woodcut designs and inspired by the many insects inhabiting the micro-environment of Laumeier Sculpture Park. The monumental insects, to be installed in the Children’s Sculpture Garden, reflect Huck’s signature beautifully grotesque stylized illustrations in his infamous woodblocks. These interactive works also illustrate how both nature and art experienced together, with a sprinkle of mischief, can inspire creativity and amusement in both children and adults. Exhibit runs October 3, 2014-February 1, 2015. An Opening Reception will be held on Friday, October 3, 2014 from 6 - 9 p.m. Admission is free.

Docent-guided tours can also be customized for groups. Reservations are required three weeks in advance and will last 45 minutes to 1 hour. Cost is $3/person or $25 for a group of 12 or less.
