We are living in uncertain political and economic times.

In these times, we must …walk by faith, not by sight”

(2 Corinthians 5:7). What is faith; and, what is sight?

Hebrews 11:1 states, “Now faith is the substance of

things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” The

word “sight” indicates the ability to see something

through earthly eyes. Sight enables us to see people

and material things, while faith gives us insight to

understand God and His plan for our lives.

When we are hurting, we can turn to God for help.

Paul did, and God spoke to him with these words,

“My grace is sufficient for you, for my strength is

made perfect in weakness.” (2 Corinthians 12:9). Our

weakness, our hurting, our cries to God for help bring

us into a closer relationship with the Father and, at

the same time, deepen our worship and invite God’s

strength into our lives.

By faith, we serve a living God whom we cannot see.

By faith, we are able to experience love beyond human

comprehension. By faith, we are able to ride out the

storms of life. American heroine Helen Keller, shortly

before her sixtieth birthday, expressed pity for those

who have eyes, yet do not see. Her long years of

physical blindness gave her a spiritual insight which

enabled her to understand and enjoy life. She said, “If

the blind put their hand in God’s they find their way

more surely than those who see but have not faith or

purpose.”---Western Recorder

“Oh say can you see, by the dawns early light…gave

proof through the night that our flag was still there. “ If

we are to remain the land of the free and the home of

the brave, we must …walk by faith, not by sight.

In His Love,Andy

Great Hymns of the Faith

The Adult Choir is preparing for a Great Hymns

of the Faith concert to be presented on Sunday,

August 9, at 6:30 p.m. during the evening worship

time. As the name indicates, the concert will

feature arrangements of some of the greatest

hymns of all times, including Amazing Grace,

Great Is Thy Faithfulness, Jesus Saves, How Great

Thou Art, and To God Be the Glory.

During the concert weekend, Dr. Tom Smith will

be our guest clinician and conductor. Dr. Smith

is former director of the Auburn University

Singers and Choir. He began directing the

Auburn University choir in 1973 and continued

over 30 years while, at the same time, leading worship at Providence Baptist Church in Opelika. It will be an honor for

our choir to be under his direction to learn and worship.

What I have learned about the great hymns is that, when written, they all contained a fresh, timeless message and

unforgettable melody. The Baptist Hymnal contains hundreds of hymns; but, when it comes right down to it, there are

about 75 that have become famous. And, several of them have continued as favorites during our generation.

The arrangement of How Great Thou Art that we enjoy now was made popular by the Billy Graham Crusade during

the late 1950s and early 1960s. It’s most famous singer,

George Beverly Shea, is still living in North Carolina;

and a person my brother knows just installed a new

plasma TV in Shea’s home. Shea is 100 years old and I

think they gave him a lifetime warranty on the TV.

Music certainly evolves over time. Even the hymns we

enjoy, such as Amazing Grace, change their structure

and have verses added. The 5th stanza to Amazing

Grace – When we’ve been there ten thousand years

– was added in hymnals in the early 1900’s. Recently,

Chris Tomlin composed a new chorus to the hymn

which, I believe, will become a permanent part of this

most popular hymn of all time.

Let’s all take advantage of this opportunity to worship

together through the singing of these great hymns.

We will make a recording of the choir to mark this

event at Taylor Road Baptist Church. I hope you will

plan to attend with your family, invite your friends and

neighbors, and pray for the choir as we prepare the

music. Join us Sunday night, August 9, at 6:30 p.m.!!!
