LAST TIME OUT Despite a disappointing loss to Edgewood on the road earlier in the week, the Sabres were able to bounce back and defeat Dominican with a strong second half performance in River Forest. Marian shot over 57 percent from the field in the second stanza and locked down the Stars defensively to turn a seven-point deficit into an 81-65 victory. Junior Sarah Olewinski poured in a career-high 25 points in the win, while senior Sarah Albert added 21 points and six rebounds. Freshman Emma Jarvey chipped in 13 points, eight rebounds as well. The Sabres connected on 10-of-19 three-point attempts, giving them seven double-digit three-point performances this season, including two straight.

A LOOK AT THE WARRIORS Wisconsin Lutheran College has won 14 straight and comes in with a 15-3 overall record, including a 13-1 mark in conference play, which rates first in the league. The Warriors haven’t lost since a three-point setback to Alverno back on Nov. 30, and are averaging a margin of victory of more than 23 points during the streak. The Warriors rank first in the NACC in field goals per game (26.2), rebounds (44.3), rebounding margin (9.8), blocks per game (5.5), opponents’ field goal percentage (32.7) and opponents’ three-point percentage (22.8). A front-runner for NACC Player of the Year, junior Kristen Schulz has dominated the opposition and leads the Warriors with 16.8 ppg, 12.1 rpg and more than three blocks per game. Taylor Bahr adds 10 ppg, followed by Melanie Laete and Rachel Hoft, who turn in 9.8 and 9.2 ppg, respectively.

ALL-TIME VS. WISCONSIN LUTHERAN Marian has struggled against the perennial powerhouse of the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference of late as Wisconsin Lutheran College has won 10 straight meetings and enters Tuesday’s 49th meeting all-time with a 36-12 edge in the series. The last Marian victory was back on Feb. 8, 2005 in a 62-56 result in Milwaukee. Last time both teams met was on Jan. 9, and the Warriors dominated from start to finish with a 75-28 win. The Sabres were held to 20.8 percent from the field and were outrebounded 32-17. Schulz turned in a 20-point, 17-rebound performance as her team shot 43.8 percent and commanded the paint with a 38-8 advantage.

SCOUTING THE SPARTANS Aurora University has won three of its last five and snapped a two-game skid following a 75-54 victory over Dominican at home back on Jan. 29. The Spartans have a busy three-game week this week as they take on Rockford on the road Tuesday, followed by Thursday home date with second-place Concordia Wisconsin before arriving in Fond du Lac on Saturday. The Spartans rank second in the NACC in three-point percentage (35.6) and third in three’s made per game (5.9). Their soft spot lies in protecting the rock as they average 18.8 turnovers per game, which is 10th in the league. They also allow opponents to shoot the three at a rate of 32.4 percent, which ranks 10th. Sophomore Bethany Dorrington leads four Spartans in double figures this season with 16.7 ppg, to go along with seven rebounds, 5.6 assists and 1.5 steals per contest. Shay Jenkins comes in at 16.4 ppg, while Shannon Koski and Anna Roszkowski average 13.6 and 10.7 ppg, respectively. Roszkowski adds a team-best 8.3 rebounds per game.

ALL-TIME VS. AURORA Marian and Aurora will be meeting for the 11th time in the all-time series with the Spartans holding a 7-3 edge. The Spartans have won two of the last three meetings, including a slim, 66-64, win in Fond du Lac last season on a last-second shot by Shay Jenkins back on Jan. 19, 2013. In their last meeting back on Jan. 15, in Aurora, the Spartans took a 32-29 lead into halftime and held on for a 65-59 victory at home. Marian was led by Sarah Albert’s 20 points, 18 of which came in the first half on a 6-for-6 effort from three. Jenkins led Aurora with 19 points, while Dorrington chipped in 12 points, eight rebounds and six assists.

WORKING OVERTIME The Sabres snapped their nine-game losing streak with an 86-74 double overtime victory over Alverno, Jan. 25, using a 21-point second overtime outburst to seal the win. It was just their second overtime contest of the season and first win in an extra-session game since another double overtime win over Alverno back on Feb. 16, 2011.

FROM WAY DOWNTOWN Like it did last year, Marian is once again leading the NACC and ranks 10th in the nation in three’s made per game. The Sabres are converting 8.0 three’s per game on 23.9 attempts per game for an average of 33.6 percent, which ranks fourth in the conference. Marian has registered seven double-digit three-point efforts this season, including two straight, and recorded a season-high 15 three-pointers in a loss at UW-Stout in the season opener back on Nov. 19.

STIFF NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE The Sabres faced the brutal task of taking on five Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponents to make up their 2013-14 non-conference schedule, which included four road dates. Despite coming up short in all five, Marian had a respectable showing against UW-Platteville on the road, falling in overtime, 81-77. The Sabres wrapped up non-conference play at UW-Oshkosh, Dec. 18, falling to the then-21st-ranked Titans, 65-44. One of the more dominant leagues among Division III conferences, Marian’s WIAC opponents have combined for a 58-40 mark through Feb. 3.

FOR THE 42nd TIME Marian University women’s basketball began its 42nd season in program history when it faced UW-Stout on the road Tuesday, Nov. 19. The Sabres played their first-ever season under former Head Coach and Athletic Director, Bruce Prall, back in 1972-73.

LIVING UP TO THE “BILL”ING Head Coach Bill Peters, who enters his fourth season at the helm, has revived a struggling program that won just 19 games combined in the three seasons leading up to his arrival. Peters was the third-fastest in Marian history to 32 wins over his first three seasons.

VETERAN PRESENCE TO LEAD THE WAY The Sabres return five players from the 2012-13 squad, led by seniors Dani Huray and Sarah Albert. Huray tied the single-season record with 123 assists last season, averaging nearly five helpers per game. Albert, who was the 2011-12 three-point percentage champion among all divisions, is just eight three-pointers shy of taking over second place all-time in Marian laurels.

WHO ARE YOU, WHO WHO There are several new faces on the roster this season, nine to be exact. The list of newcomers features eight freshmen and junior college transfer Sarah Olewinski, who hails from Waukesha and attended UW-Waukesha a season ago. Those newcomers have accounted for over 45.4 percent of the team’s offensive production through 18 games. Freshmen Molly Kovarik and Jessica Roberts traded in their soccer and volleyball apparel, respectively, for a basketball uniform. Women’s basketball and women’s hockey are the only teams on campus with multiple two-sport athletes.

OH CAPTAINS, MY CAPTAINS Head Coach Bill Peters has named his captains for the 2013-14 season and they are: Seniors Dani Huray and Sarah Albert, junior Amelia Mirsberger and senior student assistant coach Kelsey Moore.

RECORDS MAY FALL Sarah Albert has shown to be one of the purest shooters in the conference, if not in the nation. The Howards Grove native averaged 49.6 percent from three-point range in her first season as a Sabre back in 2011-12. She followed it up with a 42.4-clip last year for a career average of 45.9 percent. After going 43-for-93 through 18 games this season to give her 166 career made three-pointers and is now in sole possession of second place on the all-time list. Brook Haen (‘11) stands as the all-time leader with a program-best 204 made three’s. Albert currently holds the career standard in free throw percentage, going 84.7 percent (138-for-163) in her third season.

PRESEASON POLL The Marian University women’s basketball team was picked to finish eighth in the 2013-14 Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Preseason Poll, as voted on by the NACC head coaches and sports information directors. Three-time defending champion Wisconsin Lutheran was the majority pick to repeat once again, garnering 18-of-the-24 first-place votes for 281 poll points, after going 25-3 a season ago, including a perfect 17-0 in league play.2013-14 NACC Preseason Coaches’ and SIDs’ Poll1. The 2013-14 season presents a fresh start for the Marian University women’s basketball team as a host of veteran returners look to guide a team loaded with nine

newcomers eager to get the program back to the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference tournament for the third time in four years. Head Coach Bill Peters, who enters his fourth season at the helm, was accustomed to making the postseason after averaging 14 wins in his first two seasons at his alma mater. Last year was a different story, however, as the Sabres stumbled to a four-win campaign with a squad that lacked size and depth. This year, those issues have been addressed and there’s an added motivation to get back to where Peters and his leaders believe the program belongs. “I expect to get back to the conference tournament,” Peters said. “To be .500 and battling for one of the top-eight seeds is our baseline goal.” Three players that started all 25 games last year return to a lineup that now features more size, depth and overall balance that the squad lacked. Senior Dani Huray (Little Chute, Wis./Little Chute), who tied a school record with 123 assists last season, will share team captain responsibilities with fellow seniors Sarah Albert (Howards Grove, Wis./Howards Grove) and Kelsey Moore (Sister Bay, Wis./Gibraltar), as well as, junior Amelia Mirsberger (New Holstein, Wis./New Holstein).

Huray leads a backcourt that features a host of ball handlers, which proves more important this year with the newly added 10-second backcourt rule. A great distributor in her own right, Huray won’t be relied on as heavily as the team’s point guard with the new addition of junior-transfer Sarah Olewinski (Waukesha, Wis./Pewaukee), who is coming off two very productive seasons at UW-Waukesha where she averaged over

16 points per game a season ago. “She has already

emerged as the floor leader for our team,” Peters said of Olewinski. “She has the characteristics of a true point guard as she is able to push the ball well, while spreading the floor and scoring when she needs to.” Albert is just two years removed from leading the nation in all divisions and NAIA after posting a 49.6 shooting percent from three-point range. Last season, she turned in a respectable 42.4-clip, while leading the team in rebounding and finishing second in scoring at 11.6 points per game. The lack of depth forced her to play more than 37 minutes per game, which will tire any shooter out. “Defenses will continue to key on her as she is one of the best three-point shooters in the conference,” Peters said. “Our added depth to the position will also cut down on her minutes

and allow her to be a more dangerous shooter by keeping her legs fresh throughout the season.” An emerging leader on the squad, Mirsberger, who will relinquish her point guard duties in 2013-14 and instead focus on her much-improved outside shot, received much praise from Peters. “Anytime you have an upperclassman who has been in the system for two years already, it’s a huge asset to have,” Peters said. “She’s accepted the role well, leading by example like she always has, while also becoming a vocal presence when needed.” Providing depth at the two off-guard positions will be a host of newcomers, including Nicole Paulus (Belgium, Wis./Random Lake). “Nicole does a lot of things well,” Peters said. “She is a very heady player who has a nose for the ball and raises the intensity level from the moment she takes the floor.” Also in the mix will be Abigail Acosta (Marshall, Wis./Marshall), Michelle Koster (Ripon, Wis./Ripon) and Mariah Hulbert (Fremont, Wis./Weyauwega-Fremont). At the post position, returning will be sophomores Lindsay Vogels (De Pere, Wis./West De Pere) and Brianna Tietz (Lake Forest, Calif./Northwood). “Lindsay really worked hard on her game in the summer,” Peters said. “She’s a versatile player and, with the year of experience, we’re hoping for a breakout year from her.” Freshman Emma Jarvey (Green Bay, Wis./Ashwaubenon) stands six-feet tall and will give the Sabres added depth at the post. “Her ability to rebound and play defense will certainly give us a boost inside,” Peters said. “She’s provided a lot of competition at the five-spot and will be fighting for a starting role leading up to the opener.” Molly Kovarik (Walworth, Wis./Big Foot) is familiar with defending already as she started as outside back on the Marian women’s soccer team this fall. She has already shown in just a few days of practice to be a welcomed addition on the defensive end. Another two-sport athlete is freshman Jessica Roberts (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes), who finished up her first season with the volleyball team after a solid basketball career at nearby Oshkosh Lourdes, gives the Sabres a versatile presence, standing five feet, nine inches tall. The non-conference schedule will be daunting as four state schools in Stout, Platteville, La Crosse and nationally-ranked Stevens Point await the Sabres out of the gate with Oshkosh scheduled in mid-December. “We like to schedule opponents that will prepare us for conference play and, by playing better teams, it will get us ready,” Peters said. “Just turns out that this was the year we had an agreement to play all five state schools.” The league slate will be a little different this year. Instead of two divisions, the 12-team NACC is transitioning to one division with a 20-game league schedule that mimics the Big Ten Conference format. The Sabres will face every conference team twice with the exception of Lakeland and Concordia Wisconsin, which they will face only once. Marian was picked eighth in the NACC Preseason Coaches’ and SIDs’ Poll. If the season were to end that way, the Sabres would qualify for the final tournament spot. They will be chasing league favorite, Wisconsin Lutheran, who garnered 18 first-place votes, followed by Concordia Wisconsin and Benedictine.
