2011-12 LADY TROJANS GENERAL INFORMATION
http://www.vsu.edu/pages/102.asp http://www.vsu.edu/pages/102.asp
James Hill is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Virginia State University Lady Trojan
basketball team. This season Coach Hill became the first Virginia State women's coach to be
named the CIAA Coach of the Year in back-to-back seasons. Taking over a VSU team which had
only won four games five years ago, Hill guided the Lady Trojans to a 22-7 record and the CIAA
Eastern Division crown in 2010. The Lady Trojans also made it to the semi-finals of the CIAA
Tournament for the second straight year. To cap off the season, VSU made it's first appearance
in the NCAA Tournament since 2002 and while Hill was named the CIAA Coach of the Week on three separate occasions.
Hill also became the third VSU women's coach to record back-to-back 20-win seasons. Leon Bey and Bertha Cummings
achieved the feat during the 1980s. Hill also became the first VSU coach to guide the Lady Trojans to a Top 20 ranking in
the USA Today/ESPN Women's Basketball Poll. VSU was ranked as high as #16, the team's highest ranking ever in the
national poll. The Lady Trojans, under Coach Hill's guidance, also reached as high as #3 in the Atlantic Region of the
NCAA, marking the team's highest ranking ever in the regional poll.
Hill's coaching philosophy, both on and off the court has blossomed into academic success for his Lady Trojans.
Rhon'Neisha Taylor was named to the CIAA- All Commissioner's Academic Team for the 09-10 season. Hill also coached
three other Lady Trojans that were recipients of the 2009-10 DII Academic Achievement Awards; Domminique Dunn,
Tierney Rock, and Nia Thompson.
Hill guided the Lady Trojans to a 21-8 record in 2008-09, becoming one of only four VSU coaches to reach the 20+ win
plateau. Only Leon Bey, Bertha Cummings and Peggy Davis have reached 20 or more wins in a single season while at
VSUA Division II, and only Cummings had more wins, with 23 wins in a single season. Hill was named the CIAA Coach of
the Week twice in 2008-09, and the Lady Trojans reached the semi-finals of the CIAA Tournament for the first time since
2002. VSU was also ranked in the Top 50 of the USA Today/WBCA Rankings several times during 2008-09, marking the
team's first appearance in the poll since the 2001-02 season. VSU was also ranked as high as sixth in the NCAA Division II
South Atlantic Regional Poll and won nine of their first 10 games last season, a feat that hadn't happened since the 1995-
96 team won their first 18 games.
For his efforts, Hill was named the 2009 CIAA Coach of the Year. The Lady Trojans were also given the award for the
highest team grade point average in the CIAA that year. In his first season, Hill guided the Lady Trojans to a 9-20 record,
including a 57-46 first-round upset of Virginia Union University in the 2007 CIAA Tournament. The win was the first for a
Lady Trojan team in the tournament in four years. In his first season, Hill was named CIAA Coach of the Week twice,
once after the Lady Trojans upset Fayetteville State and Elizabeth City State in back-to-back games. In 2007-08, Hill
coached the Lady Trojans to an 11-18 mark, and guided VSU to the second round of the CIAA Tournament. VSU also won
the John B. McLendon Team Sportsmanship Award from the CIAA.
Hill is a native of Macon, Ga., where he attended Northeast High School. He played basketball for four years while at
Northeast, winning the Best All-Around Player and Most Assists Award for three years. He also received the Grit Award,
one of the highest athletic awards given in Georgia. Hill landed at Shaw University, where he played basketball for three
years while earning his Bachelor’s of Science degree in Allied Health and Professional Recreation. He started his coaching
career at Nash High School, where he was an assistant coach on the basketball and football teams.
Hill moved on to Apex High School, and quickly received an assistant coaching position at his alma mater, Shaw Univer-
sity. During Hill’s tenure at Shaw, the Lady Bears won three consecutive CIAA championships, three Black College Cham-
pionships, a South Atlantic Regional Championship and an appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight. Hill was also named the
CIAA Assistant Coach of the Year for two straight years while Shaw obtained an overall record 105-21 during his time as
assistant coach.

2011-12 LADY TROJANS SUPPORT STAFF
2011-12 LADY TROJANS 2011-12 SEASON OUTLOOK
Virginia State University’s women basketball team will implement a new look for the 2011-
12 season. Head women’s basketball coach, James Hill has won over 80 games entering his
sixth season. In 2010-11 VSU ended the season with a 19-9 overall record, went 12-6 in CIAA
conference play, and finished tied for first place in the Northern Division with a 9-3 record.
VSU ran a complex, up-tempo offensive style a season ago, that led the CIAA conference in
several statistical categories. The Lady Trojans led the CIAA conference in scoring margin
(+12.0 ppg), field goal percentage (.403), three point field goal percentage (.333), and also in
defensive rebounding (37.0 rpg). Hill will build his 2011-12 team around a more defensive
philosophy.
“There is no shortcuts to success, it takes hard work, commitment, sacrifice, and discipline,”
says Hill. VSU’s coaching staff wants their Lady Trojans to become stronger defensively than
they were last year with the departure of six seniors. The 2010-11 CIAA conference leading
scorer, Rhon’Neisha Taylor averaged 17.7 ppg and was named to her second All-CIAA team.
This year VSU will have a tough task of replacing her senior leadership and scoring ability.
Returning for the Lady Trojans will be senior Marquilla Evans (guard,5-7), junior Quiana Kizer
(forward,6-0), senior Mariame Sylla (center,6-3), and junior Ashley Whitaker (guard,5-10).
Evans and Kizer will bring experience after playing ample minutes for VSU a season ago. The
coaching staff expects all four Lady Trojans to have breakout seasons. Coach Hill has also
redecorated his roster with a host of new faces.
The Lady Trojans have several newcomers added to the mix of returners from a season ago.
LaMesha Deal (forward,5-10), Shantel Crout (guard,5-9), Frances Nerius (center,6-1), Brit-
tany Newby-Ellis (guard,5-7), Takeema Blakney (5-
8,guard), Asysa Smith (forward,5-8), and Jasmine
Stewart (guard,5-7) are all transfers looking to make
an impact at “The Land of Troy”. Jasmine Deloatche
(forward,5-11), Dashae Jones (guard,5-7), Briante
Bond (guard,5-6) are all looking to make an impact as
true freshmen added to the 2011-12 Lady Trojan bas-
ketball roster.
The Lady Trojans will begin their 2011-12 CIAA Cham-
pionship run at the “Conference Challenge” in Shep-
herdstown, WV on Nov. 12th
against host Shepherd
University and Kutztown University. As the Thanks-
giving holiday arrives, VSU will host Mercy University,
Augusta State University, and Elizabeth City State Uni-
versity in the 4th
Annual Chik-Fil-A Classic on Nov. 25th
.

paint. Coaches comment that she has great speed defensively. Takeema can also play several
positions offensively and guard up to four positions defensively.
Crout is a transfer from Southwest Tennessee CC, where she was the second leading scorer on
her team in 2010-11. She shot 40% from the field and was ranked in the top-20 in the confer-
ence in scoring steals, blocks, rebounds, assists, and FT percentage. Coaches comment that
Shantel is a long, quick athletic player who can be a key contributor defensively and offen-

Jasmine has the potential to play inside and out. She is a very coachable player that will work hard on and off the
