Welcome to today’s game at Hyland Arena

Lindenwood University is celebrating 184 years of educating young people. This new academic term began with nearly 4,000 students living on the this beautiful 500-acre campus. We are continuing to construct modern facilities and hire the very best faculty members to provide a college education of the highest quality.

Many examples of our expansion are near the Hyland Arena. Just to the south of the Hyland Arena, the 119,000 square-foot Evans Commons student center is open for business. To the north of the arena is our new School of Business and Entrepreneurship, housed in Harmon Hall, which was recently doubled in size. And just outside of Hunter Stadium, we

are constructing a 43,000 square foot Student-Athlete Center that will house an academic success center, new locker rooms, athletic training facilities, a Champions’ Room, and

coaches offi ces. Completion of that building is expected in late 2012. Lindenwood’s athletics facilities are fi rst-class and ensure a competitive training and recruiting

environment.

Lindenwood’s doctoral program in education is thriving, and additional doctoral programs are under consideration. We are busy planning a new apartment-style student

residential facility, and other wonderful changes are on the horizon. We are proudly transitioning 26 sports into the NCAA Division II, many of which will be joining in Fall 2012 the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA), the fi nest Division II athletics conference in the country.

Tony Francis is entering his second season as the head coach of the Lindenwood Lady Lions basketball program.

In 2010, Francis led one of the top turnarounds in the country when he took the Lindenwood program back to the upper echelon of the HAAC. The Lady Lions went from nine wins in 2009 to 21 in 2010. The program also fi nished in second place in the HAAC Conference. Lindenwood put together two six game winning streaks during the season. The Lions compiled

a home record of 12-4 and conference mark of 15-5. Under Francis’ guidance, the team placed in the top fi ve in numerous school records. Three Lady Lions were named to the All-HAAC squad and Morgan Harrington was named to the NAIA All-American team. Coach Francis was also named the Conference Coach of the Year.

Before accepting the head coaching posistion at Lindenwood, Francis spent eight seasons as an assistant coach at NCAA Division I, St. Louis. At Saint Louis, Francis was the recruiting coordinator and he helped the Billikens land some of the top talent in the St. Louis area and beyond. He was also in charge of developing the team’s post players. The past couple of seasons, he was a mentor to center Amanda Kemezys, who earned Atlantic 10 all-conference honors the past two seasons. He also signed Theresa Lisch, who was a fi rst-team all-conference and Academic All-American at Saint Louis.

Melanie Schmit is entering her second season as an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team.

In her fi rst season, Schmit helped turn around the Lindenwood program. The Lady Lions went from nine wins in 2009-10 to 21 wins in 2010-11. Lindenwood fi nished second in the HAAC, had three all-conference performers, and one All-American.

Schmit comes to Lindenwood after spending the 20 years as a high school coach. She spent 17 years at New Haven

High School and the last three years at Troy High School.While the head coach at New Haven, Schmit helped start the

women’s basketball program in 1994 and compiled an overall record of 177-69. She also led the Shamrocks to the 1A state championship in 2002, fi ve conference titles, four district championships, and was named the 1A coach of the year in 2002.

For the past three years, Schmit was the head coach at Troy High School where the Trojans went 50-32 and played in the district title game for three straight seasons. Schmit was named Coach of the Year by the Lincoln County Journal.

Women’s Head Coach - Tony Francis

Francis helped the Billikens win 82 games. He was a member of the staff in 2002-03 when the team fi nished fi fth in the Atlantic-10 and advanced to the WNIT. That squad had the second-best winning percentage at Saint Louis over the last 23 years.

Prior to coaching at Saint Louis, Francis was a successful head coach at Silex (Mo.) High School from 1994-2002. In eight years, he led the Owls to a 159-67 record and won fi ve district and fi ve conference championships. His top team came in 2001 when Silex won the Class 1A Missouri state championship. Francis coached fi ve All-State players and nine players earned college basketball scholarships. He was named the 1A Coach of the Year after his state championship season. He was the Lincoln County Coach of the Year fi ve times and District Coach of the Year once.

Francis played basketball at Culver-Stockton College. He began his coaching career there as a men’s student assistant, helping the team win the 1991 HAAC Championship. He graduated from Culver-Stockton in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education.

Francis and his wife, Rhonda, have two daughters, Lexis and Arianna.

Assistant Coach - Melanie Schmit Assistant Coaches

Kelly Albers is in her fi rst season on the coaching staff for the Lady Lions. Albers will be a graduate assistant for Coach Tony Francis after playing for Lindenwood the previous two season.

During her playing days at Lindenwood she averaged over 10 points a game and seven rebounds. She was named to the third team all-conference her senior season. Recorded 16 double-doubles over her career as a Lady Lion.

Jeremy Leake is in his fi rst season as a student assistant on the women’s basketball staff.

Leake was a standout high school basketball player for Mark Twain. After high school Leake attended Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Mo.

He has been involved in many areas of basketball including assisting at clinics, and coaching an AAU girls’ team.

He and his wife, Tanya, have three daughters, Skylyr, Sydny, and Shayly.



Marshall Newman returns to the sidelines for his seventh year as an assistant coach with the Lions basketball team and his third year on head coach Brad Soderberg’s staff. Newman assists in all aspects in the program including recruiting, and on-court coaching.

Newman has been a part of the top two Lindenwood teams in program history. In his fi rst season at the school in 2005-06, he helped the Lions win a school record 26 games. That squad won the fi rst HAAC Championship in school history,

and it advanced to the NAIA Division II Tournament Final Four. In 2010-11, he was a part of the coaching staff on the Lindenwood team which broke the 2005-06 record for wins. Lindenwood won 29 games that year, won its second HAAC Championship, and advanced to the second round of the NAIA Division I National Tournament.

Newman completed his playing career for Webster University in 2005. He earned all-St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference honors for the Gorloks. Prior to playing at Webster, Newman was an all-conference performer at Illinois Central College, where he averaged 13 points and six rebounds per game.

A native of St. Louis and a 2000 graduate of Lindbergh High School, Newman graduated from Webster University in May of 2005 with a degree in media communications, and received his Master of Arts in Teaching in May of 2007.

Terry Hollander is entering his second season as an assistant coach for the Lindenwood Lions basketball team. He came to Lindenwood after 30 years as head coach of St. Charles West High School.

In his fi rst year at Lindenwood, he was part of the coaching staff for the top team in program history. The Lions went 29-6 overall, won a share of the HAAC Championship, participated in the HAAC Tournament Championship game, and advanced to the second round of the NAIA Division I National Tournament.

During his time at St. Charles West, he compiled a record of 549-279. He led the Warriors to the school’s only state championship in 1995, a second place fi nish in 2008, and fi nished third in 1994 and 2003. His teams were also district champions 12 times.

Hollander was inducted into the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2008. During his coaching career in high school athletics he has also been a football, baseball and golf coach.

Hollander graduated from Truman State University with his bachelor’s degree in 1973 and also received his master’s degree in secondary school administration in 1983. During his time at the high school level, he taught American History for 34 years.

Hollander and his wife, Brenda, have three children, Blake, Kirk and Leigh Ann. He also has two grandchildren, Eden and Zoey.

Brad Soderberg is in his third season as the head coach of the Lindenwood men’s basketball team. He is in his 16th year as a collegiate head coach, including six at the NCAA Division I level.

Under Soderberg, the Lions have won 20 games in each of his fi rst two seasons. That marks just the second time in school history that Lindenwood has had back-to-back 20-win seasons. Lindenwood is 52-16 through two seasons under Soderberg and enters the 2011-12 season with a career record of 263-163.

In 2010-11, the Lions had their best season in school history, setting a school record for wins. They fi nished with a record

of 29-6 and had a 17-3 mark in conference play. Lindenwood compiled a record of 15-3 at the Hyland Arena and a 12-2 mark on the road. During the season the team had a school record winning streak of 16 games. In the middle of the streak the Lions beat then No. 1 Robert Morris on the road.

For the fi rst time in school history, the program made it to the NAIA Division I National Championship. The Lions won their opening round game 78-77 over St. Catherine College. For the second consecutive year, the Lions made it to the HAAC Tournament Championship game. After the season, three members were named to the All-HAAC squad. Kramer Soderberg was also named to the All-American team.

In 2009-10, his fi rst season as the head coach of Lindenwood, Soderberg’s team compiled an overall record of 23-10 and a 13-7 mark in the HAAC. The 23 wins were the most for the Lions since the 2005-06 season. Soderberg’s team was also dominant at home, compiling a 13-1 record which was the highest home winning percentage and the most

home wins in school history. The Lions won two games in the HAAC tournament before falling to William Jewell in overtime by one point in the championship game. During the regular season, the Lions were 5-2 against ranked teams, including an upset win of the No. 1 team in the country at the time, Robert Morris. Four Lions were named to the all-conference team in 2009-10 and Toriano Adams was named an honorable mention All-American.

Soderberg returned to the St. Louis area in 2009 after being the head coach at Saint Louis University from 2002-07. He compiled 80 wins at Saint Louis, the sixth-most in school history, and led the Billikens to two postseason berths.

Soderberg also spent one year as an assistant coach at Saint Louis in 2001-02 under Lorenzo Romar. Prior to that, he was at Wisconsin for six years. He started as an assistant coach under Dick Bennett and helped the Badgers advance to four NCAA Tournaments, including the 2000 Final Four, and one NIT appearance. In 2000-01, he took over as the interim head coach early in the season and led Wisconsin to a 16-10 record, and a fi fth-place fi nish in the Big Ten.

Soderberg was the head coach at South Dakota State University from 1993-95 and at Loras College from 1988-1993. He was named the National Catholic Basketball Tournament Coach of the Year in 1992 after leading Loras to a runner-up fi nish. He also had previous coaching jobs at Loras, University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, Colorado State University, and Fort Hays State University. He also spent the 2008-09 school year at Loras as the interim Director of Athletics.

Soderberg graduated from UW-Stevens Point in 1985 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, and he earned a master’s in physical education from Colorado State in 1986.

Soderberg and his wife, Linda, have two sons, Kramer and Davis, and a daughter, Daley.

Basketball is in Their BloodThe Lindenwood men’s and women’s basketball teams have had many

talented players over the years. Both basketball teams especially competed well in the 2010-2011 season, with two players standing out the most during their treacherous season. As you may or may not know, some of these players have been playing basketball for as long as they can remember. However Kramer Soderberg and Morgan Harrington, both starting point guards for the respective teams, have been coached by the most infl uential person an athlete can be taught by, their fathers.

“I think any dad whether they admit or not, are always coaching their kids from the day their born. Kramer and I have always been close and he’s been a part of a Big Ten program, fl own on planes with the team, been to a Final Four not just as fan but part of the program,” Lindenwood men’s head coach Brad Soderberg said about his son, Kramer. “I had the chance to coach Kramer in fi fth grade at Sacred Heart’s Catholic School in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. I was the interim coach at Wisconsin and both games were equally as important. We would play St. Joe’s Academy at 8 a.m. and Michigan State at 8 p.m.”

Senior point guard Kramer Soderberg said he started playing basketball ever since he was born. Fortunately for him, his father was a college basketball coach. Coach Soderberg has had the opportunity to coach some great players at some of well-known universities.

“Even though I wasn’t offi cially coached by him that much, being around him and the basketball world, there was never a year when he wasn’t coaching me,” Kramer said. “I would start to watch things and learn things through perception and since I was around it so much, my knowledge expanded so much as a player.”

His talents carried on to high school where he attended St. Charles West and graduated in 2008. During his time there, Kramer was a two-time all-state selection, earned conference player of the year honors three times and all-conference accolades four times. In his senior year, he earned the Gatorade Player of the Year in Missouri and was also named the Saint Louis Post Dispatch Player of the Year.

As a teammate, Kramer helped guide the Warriors to four conference titles, district championship appearances his freshmen and senior year along with a Missouri State Class 4 fi nal four appearance in 2007-08. Kramer was a four-year letterwinner and three-time team captain who helped the Warriors to a combined 100-18 record during his prep career.

“He’s not the most coachable by any means. He is stubborn and a lot of times he thinks he’s right and I’m wrong. He’s a competitive kid and I think he gets that from me and that’s okay,” Coach Soderberg said. “I can say that he is the hardest working player I’ve seen in the off season. He wanted to be as good as player as his body could allow and although he

isn’t the biggest, he defi nitely is one of the best I’ve been around.”

After spending three seasons Miami-Ohio Kramer wanted to fulfi ll a dream.

“It was always a dream of mine to play Division I basketball. I got to play in the big venues and was able to experience that,” Kramer said about playing at Miami-Ohio. “I always love being home and when my other dream came along to play for my dad, Lindenwood opened up as an option.”

“I’m going to miss him a lot as a player. He is one of those unique guys that can score outside the concept of the basket, which bails me out sometimes,” Coach

Soderberg said. “But I will miss seeing him every day. When he was at Miami-Ohio, we were unable to see him as much, and now I see him all the time and I wish it can go on forever but I know it can’t.”

The other Lindenwood athlete who has shown great leadership and passion on the court is Morgan Harrington, starting point guard for the Lady Lions basketball team. Morgan’s father Jay Harrington is a legendary basketball coach and current head men’s basketball coach at Southwestern Illinois College. Coach Harrington’s coaching record at Southwestern Illinois is 651-385, along with an overall coaching record of 734-427.

“Growing up I listened to all of my coaches, but I can still hear my dad in the crowd no matter what,” Morgan said about other coaches. “We had hand signals and certain words that were kind of like code in high school.”

He has received a number of awards, three Coach of the Year awards including Region XXIV, Great Rivers Athletic Conference, and the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Southern Region. Jay was also inducted into the Illinois Coaches Basketball Hall of Fame in 1999. As a player, he played professional basketball in France after his college career where he played at Montana State.

“Since my dad was a coach, he has changed the way I look at basketball,” Morgan said about her dad. “He has pushed me and taught me to communicate with my coach. He also taught me to be tough mentally, physically, and to always work hard if I’m in a bad mood, or tired it doesn’t matter. When you step between the lines, you have to forget everything that has happened that day and focus on the game.”

Morgan attended Belleville East where she was a four-time all-state honoree, all-area honoree from the Belleville News-Democrat all four years, and from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch her last three seasons. She also earned third-team all-state honors, fi rst-team all-conference, honorable-mention all-state team and the McDonald’s High School All-America nominee as a senior. Harrington ended her high school career the ninth-leading scorer in school history, while ranking No. 2 on the Lady Lancers’ all-time assist list.

“In high school I would work out with him on the weekends and even after some practices. We went to the gym on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and my birthday,” Morgan said about training with her father. “I remember how hard he was on me and how tough it was, but I wouldn’t trade those days for the world. He made me the player I am today,.”

Both of these players have displayed tremendous athletic abilities along with a great fi ghting spirit as they continue to compete for Lindenwood. They have helped mold the school into a force that is to be messed with and prove to be some of the best basketball players the program has produced. The 2011-12 season will be a good glimpse of what Lindenwood will continue to produce and what they are in pursuit of: greatness.

Hyland ArenaThe Hyland Arena was built in 1997 and is home to Lindenwood basketball, volleyball, and wrestling. The facility is named after Robert Hyland who was the chairman of the Lindenwood Board of Directors for many years and was also the CBS regional vice president and general manager of radio station KMOX in St. Louis for four decades. Hyland introduced the fi rst talk radio format and the fi rst listener call-in programs at KMOX.

About Lindenwood

Pioneer educator Mary Sibley founded Lindenwood as a school for young women in 1827. Lindenwood was committed to combining professional issues with academic pursuits, the social with the intellectual, and the spiritual with the physical. In short, Mary Sibley brought holistic higher education to the American frontier.

Lindenwood became a Presbyterian college in 1853 and still maintains a historical relationship with the Presbyterian Church. In 1918, Lindenwood became a four-year college. In 1969, Lindenwood attempted to strengthen its fi nancial base by becoming co-ed. The school altered its name in 1974. Doing business as The Lindenwood Colleges, it had become a federation of four enterprises: The Lindenwood College for Women, The Lindenwood College for Individualized Education. Graduate programs had also been added to the mix.

During the ‘70s and ‘80s, the school suffered annual operating defi cits and accumulated substantial indebtedness. In the spring of 1989, the number of students had dropped below 1,000, the fi nancial situation was dire, and there was no well-defi ned sense of purpose and direction. In view of the school’s seemingly inexorable decline, the board of directors considered closing the doors permanently. Instead of shutting down of America’s oldest institutions of higher education, Lindenwood’s board of directors made a courageous decision to “refound” the school by returning to the fundamental precepts of individualized, holistic, values-oriented higher education that combines the practical with the academic.

At the height of its revival, Lindenwood College became Lindenwood University in 1997. Enrollment burgeoned, and new construction arrived in late 1997 with the Hyland Performance Arena. By 1998-99, the unduplicated student count approached 9,500, the faculty was growing, and the school balanced its budgets and increased revenues.

In 2000, Lindenwood dedicated the fi rst of eight new residence halls to be constructed over a decade - the fi rst such construction in more than 30 years. In 2002, Lindenwood built a beautiful new campus center. The 136,000-square-foot J. Scheidegger Center for the Arts opened in 2008.

Mary Sibley ran a tightly managed school with a resourceful spirit and a clear purpose. She would have been proud of today’s Lindenwood.
