A Closer Look at TaylorThe Trojans come into tonight’s contest with a perfect 4-0 record, their best start since the 2008-09 team opened up with four wins en route to a 21-12 mark on the year. TU is outscoring its opponents by 27 points per game this season, while connecting on a blister-ing 44.6 percent of its shots from the fi eld.

Legendary head coach Tena Krause is in her 23rd season at the helm of the Taylor wom-en’s basketball program, having compiled a impressive 425-295 record over the course of her career. Krause has guided the Trojans to

Erin Guarneri leads Taylor into tonight’s game, averaging a team-best 14.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per contest. She is helped by junior forward Erika Redweik, who is posting 11.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. 2010-11 Second Team All-MCC selection Tess Rudolph also returns for Trojans, dropping in 9.7 points a night this season.

Last Time vs. TUStephaine Beck poured in 31 points to lead the Purdue Calumet past nationally-recognized Taylor University, 85-73, in the fi nal day of the Sleep Inn Tip-Off Classic in Hammond.

Beck torched the nets with 12-of-20 shooting from the fi eld and a blistering 6-of-7 shooting from beyond the arc to tie the career-high scoring output she tallied the night before. Tierra Turner continued her outstanding play as well, recording a double-double en route to Sleep Inn All-Classic accolades. The 5-foot-8 guard fi lled up the stat sheet with 17 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and a pair of steals.

Alex Starr came off the bench to help the Peregrines put the game away in the second half, pouring in 14 of her 16 points in the stanza. Jennifer Britton added eight points, while Amanda Gaskin dropped in seven points and fi ve rebounds.

Series History with the TrojansThe Peregrines have a 6-5 advantage over Taylor in the all-time series between the two schools, as PUC snapped a four-game skid to the Trojans with an 85-73 victory in the Sleep Inn Tip-Off Classic last season.

Tom Megyesi is in fi fth season as the head coach of the Purdue Calumet women’s basketball program. He has continued to

transform the women’s basketball program with his high-octane offensive attack that has helped the Peregrines improve their win total in each of the past four seasons.

Under Megyesi, PUC has become the most prolifi c offense in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference, as the Peregrines have led the conference in scoring for the past three years with over 75 points per game in each of those campaigns.

Megyesi’s teams have also put their imprint on the school record book, as both individual and team marks have been set during his tenure. His last three teams have found the top of the school’s scoring list, including 2010-11’s record-breaking offense that put up 2,396 points on the year.

The Peregrines turned a corner in 2010-11, tallying 17-13 overall record and a 7-5 mark in the CCAC on their way to the CCAC Tournament semifi nals for the third-straight year. The Black and Gold’s .567 winning percentage was the program’s highest in eight years, when the 2003-04 team went 25-9.

Purdue Calumet’s success under Megyesi has been rec-ognized by the rest of the conference, as he has seen 10 athletes receive All-CCAC recognition and one earn CCAC Freshman-of-the-Year accolades in his fi rst four cam-paigns at PUC.

Last Time OutPurdue Calumet withstood a late rally by Roosevelt University on Tuesday night, recording a 79-68 victory at the Fitness and Recreation Center. The Peregrines’ second-straight win pushes them to 4-2 overall and 2-0 against CCAC Div. I opponents.

PUC’s defense proved to be the hero, holding Roosevelt to 36.4 percent shooting and forcing 30 turnovers. The Black and Gold were able to turn those mishaps into 28 points.

Purdue Calumet was able to get to the free throw line in bunches, attempting 46 free throws on the evening including 27 in the second half alone. That sheer number of at-tempts allowed the Peregrines to overcome a rather pedestrian night at the line, when they connected on just 65.2 percent (30-of-46) of their shots.

Stephaine Beck topped PUC with 19 points on the night, while Kami Graber and Alex Starr joined her in double-fi gures with 16 points apiece. Brooklyn Short dished out a game-high four assists and Amanda Gaskin ripped down a season-best 10 rebounds.

All-Tourney HonorsPurdue University Calumet’s Stephaine Beck was named to the Viterbo NAIA Showcase All-Tournament Team, after averaging 23.5 points per game during last weekend’s tour-nament. Beck exploded for 29 points in the Peregrines’ opening game of the tournament against No. 5 Briar Cliff, connecting on 6-of-8 from beyond the arc. She followed that performance with 18 points and four assists in PUC’s 88-72 victory over Mayville State.

A Recipe for Success?Purdue Calumet has improved in all four of Head Coach Tom Megyesi’s season at the school and a good portion of that success can be contributed to the high-octane offense he introduced upon his arrival. PUC has led the CCAC in scoring in each of the past three seasons and ranked third in the NAIA Div. II with its 79.9 points per game a year ago. 2011-12 is no different, as the Peregrines once again top the conference and rank ninth nationally in scoring with their 81.2 points per game.

Youth MovementPUC Head Coach Tom Megyesi brought in an impressive recruiting haul this past offseason, as expectations were high for the touted fi ve-player class. However, the Peregrines’ newcomers have lived up to the high billing, despite a wealth of experience returning for Purdue Calumet. Kami Graber leads the way with 12.5 points and 2.8 assists per game off the bench, while Quinci Eller has notched 4.7 points per game on 62.5 percent shooting from downtown. Stephanie Balon and Carolyn Sandrick are combining for 4.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per contest.

PUC’s 20-Point Performances

Just six games into the 2011-12 season and Purdue Calumet has already seen players reach the 20-point plateu on fi ve occasions. Alex Starr leads the way, having eclipsed the mark three times, while Stephaine Beck and Kami Graber have each accomplished the feat once.

Turning Up the HeatThe Peregrines have turned up the pressure defensively in the opening weeks of the year, showing off some new full-court pressure. That pressure has paid off, as PUC ranks 13th in the NAIA Div. II in steals with 73 on the year. That stat has helped Purdue Calumet in the turnover margin column, as it ranks 26th in the nation with a positive 4.6 mark.

Early Bird Gets the WinOne of the keys to Purdue Calumet’s success has been its ability to jump out to an early lead. The Peregrines are 4-0 when leading at halftime this season and 27-4 record over the past three seasons when accomplishing the feat. 21 of those 27 victories have come at the Fitness and Recreation Center.

Deep ThreatsThe Black and Gold have been among the NAIA Div. II leaders in three-point shooting in each of the past three seasons and once again fi nd themselves towards the top of the ranks. PUC has had no problem moving back to the men’s collegiate three-point line, as it is knocking down 38.6 percent of its shots from beyond the arc to rank 11th in the NAIA Div. II. The Peregrines are 11th in the country in three-point fi eld goals made (44) and 21st in three-point fi eld goals per game (7.3) this season.

Climbing the Career RankingsPUC has several individuals working their way up the all-time career records list, led by Stephaine Beck, who is on pace to wrap her career in style.
