Last time: bonnies cruise past Canisius, 65-47(Box Score and Full Recap on Page 27)

buFFaLo, n.Y. - A strong second half effort led the way as the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team cruised by Canisius 65-47 at the Koessler Athletic Center on Tuesday night. Senior Dana Mitchell tallied double-figure scoring for the third straight game, leading the way with 22 points, shooting 9-12 from the floor in a career-high 37 minutes. Sophomore Jessica Jenkins landed a career-high 19 points thanks to five trifectas, to match her career-high and 4-4 from the line. The Bonnies kept up their defensive front, holding the Griffs to 30 percent from the floor and forcing 13 turnovers. St. Bonaventure edged Canisius in rebounds 33-19 and allowed only one player to score double-digits. This is also the third game in which the Brown and White held their opponent to under 50 points. Clutch free-throw shooting by Jenkins, senior Andrea Doneth and sophomore Megan Van Tatenhove through the last 1:34 closed out the game and kept the largest lead of the game at 18.

give it a seConD CHanCeThe team has exploded in their second halves, outscoring opponents 109-67. Senior Dana Mitchell put up six field goals and two from the line in the second stanza against Canisius (11/17). Sophomore Jessica Jenkins had a big second half against the Bearcats, knocking in three trifectas and a jumper for 11 points to lead the team in scoring at Binghamton. Freshman Chelsea bowker putting up two three-pointers and two from the line in the second half against Akron.

g-ForCeDana Mitchell scored her 1,500th career point in a 65-47 win at Ca-nisius on November 17. Mitchell became the fifth player in program history to reach the milestone. Mitchell is now only 62 points away from moving into the fourth spot and 95 from third on the all-time scoring list in the program record books. Even with two consecutive seasons of scoring 500+ points, the Fairless Hills, Pa., still trails the top spot held by Hilary Waltman by 643 points.

suPer seniorsWhen seniors andrea Doneth and Dana Mitchell joined the team in 2006-07, the Bonnies had not had a winning season in eight years. in their rookie season, St. Bonaventure went 16-15 to break the trends of years past. Now, three seasons later, the Bonnies have 57 triumphs, totaling more than the program’s combined total from the last six years (2000-06).

Preseason accoladesSenior Dana Mitchell was tabbed as a Preseason Atlantic 10 All-Conference first team member. Mitchell returns for her final season in the Brown and White following a junior campaign in which she garnered All-Conference second team accolades for the second consecutive year. She averaged 15.5 points to rank second in the conference and pulling down 5.6 rebounds per contest. The Fairless Hills, Pa., native also shot 50.3 percent from the field and 82 percent from the free throw line to rank seventh and fourth, respectively, in the conference.

Can’t Wait to get on the road again...The Bonnies only travel to six non-conference games this season, but will travel more than 4,000 miles and spend almost six combined days traveling. St. Bonaventure hopes to continue its out-of-con-ference road success in the 2009-10 season following a 6-3 non-conference road record last season. The Bonnies have already been successful in two road games, winning at in-state rivals Binghamton and Canisius.

bonnies in noveMberSt. Bonaventure is 24-7 under head coach Jim Crowley in November. With six games in the first month of the season, the Bonnies look to beat the program record of five wins in November. Below is a look at how the current Bonnies have fared in the first month of the season.

in our DeFenseThe Bonnies have held their three opponents to under 50 points and to 31 percent shooting. Only two players have scored double-digits against the Brown and White, while Akron did not have any players score more than six points. Akron only scored 37 points marking the second time in as many seasons that an opponent was held under 40. Last season, the Bonnies shut down Yale, allowing only 35 points to be scored. The Brown and White have forced their opponents into 56 turnovers in three games.

no traiL MixThe Bonnies have only trailed for 2 minutes and nine seconds in 120 minutes of play and the trail was only by two points. Canisius was able to score the opening basket to lead, but senior andrea Doneth opened the scoring and that would be the closest the Griffs came to the lead. Akron was within two points, 3:00 into the Bonnies home opener, but the Bonnies would not let the Zips come within seven points of their lead through the game.

seeing DoubLeSenior Dana Mitchell now has 93 double-figure scoring games through her career, sitting at third on the all-time list. With two more, she would move into second on the all-time list and could surpass the top spot with four more games of double-figures, beating out Hilary Waltman who has 98. The record has stood for almost 10 years.

HeLPing out where she canSenior andrea Doneth is just 38 assists away from breaking into the top 10 of the all-time assists list. She currently has 225, leading the team with six so far this season. Beth Gromlowicz currently holds the 10th spot with 263 from 1989-92.

rewriting HistorySt. Bonaventure made history in several different ways on its way to a record-setting 2008-09 season. First, the Brown and White beat nationally ranked Michigan State 63-52, on Bob Lanier Court. The Bonnies received their first postseason opportunity with a bid to the WNiT. St. Bonaventure then went on to defeat West Virginia in the first round and Wisconsin in the second. The 1997-98 squad is the only other team in program history to beat two BCS schools in the same season, when they beat Syracuse and Northwestern. Also, the win against WVU was the first postseason victory by any of the Big 4 women’s basketball teams in the division i era.

Court smartsSenior Katelyn Murray was named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America second team, as selected by the College Sports information directors of America. Murray’s ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America nomination is her second in as many years, as she made third team in the 2007-08 season. Murray graduated with a 4.0 grade point average in biology.

As a team, for the sixth time in the last seven academic years, St. Bo-naventure earned a spot on the Women’s Basketball Coaches Associa-tion (WBCA) Academic Team Honor Roll as the Bonnies ranked 16th in the country among NCAA division i institutions with a cumulative team grade point average of 3.35.

it’s raining threesLast season, St. Bonaventure shot 42 percent from beyond the three-point line, which ranked first in the A-10 and 19th in the nation. The Brown and White made at least six trifectas in a contest 18 times, while shooting at least 40 percent 12 times last season. Three players (Kate-lyn Murray, erica schiefen and Jessica Jenkins) nailed 142 combined three-pointers. Murray ended her career ranking third on the St. Bonaventure all-time three-pointers made list with 197

Double Figures ClubThe Brown and White owned an 8-3 record last season when someone scored 20 or more points in a game. Dana Mitchell led the way in 20-point games with eight and Katelyn Murray tallied behind her with four. When senior ashley edwards had a 10-point game against Fordham, all 10 of the Bonnies in coach Crowley’s regular rotation scored in double figures at least once last season. Mitchell led the way with 31 double figure scoring outputs, while Murray notched 21 double figure games.

1,000-500 ClubDana Mitchell collected the 500th rebound of her career in the Brown and White’s loss to duquesne on February 18. With that mile-stone rebound, Mitchell became just the eighth player in the 38-year history of St. Bonaventure women’s basketball to score 1,000 points and grab 500 rebounds in their career.

two-Minute WarningSt. Bonaventure showed a knack for putting opposing teams away down the stretch last season. The Bonnies were an incredible 21-0 when leading in a game with less than two minutes remaining in the game.

- Returns to the lineup after sitting out last season due to injury

Crowley says:“It will be key for us to get Tiara on the floor and hopefully our training staff can make that happen. T is a point guard through and through. Her whole game is about making other people better. She is an incredible rebounder from the guard position and a really fierce competitor who is a great leader and communicator with her teammates. She will do some things in the stat sheet that will help us, but she’ll do even more behind the scenes that will help us become a very good team.”

- Scored a game-high 16 points against Akron

- Named to Preseason All-Conference first team- Is only 37 points away from a career 1,500 points- Started every game in the past two seasons

Crowley says:“We’re expecting a very big senior year from Dana. Obviously she’s been able to do things her whole career, but what Dana does better than anyone is put the ball in the basket. She did that well last year, but not as well as she’s capable of. She had a down year last year and even with all of our team success her health and some other things weren’t where they needed to be and she didn’t have the year she’s capable of. She came back in great shape this year and has something to prove. Last year she was preseason first team, ended up on the second team. She has something to prove that she’s an elite level player in the Atlantic 10 and we feel in the country and its up to her to prove that.”

Crowley says:“Jess can be really special. The thing she has to continue to improve on, and she will, is playing her game off the bounce at her size and finding shots. She has had an amazing offseason and preseason and has a great mentality and really shoots the ball well. Jess can do some different things to get her shot off as well. She is going to have games where she’s not going to make shots, but she will still make a big impact for us. She’s a kid we need to step into a bigger role for us and we’re confident she can do that.”

Senior Dana Mitchell also pitched in netting 15. A pair from the charity stripe from sophomore Megan Van Tatenhove started the second stanza in which the Bonnies never looked back going up as much as 25 late in the half. Senior Andrea Doneth continued the Bonnies’ lead when she threw up a last-second shot to beat the shot clock with a 3-point bucket and push the lead to 43-24. Jenkins and Walker hit consecutive layups followed by Jenkins’ 3-pointer and two charity stripe points in less than three minutes to swell the Bonnies’ lead to 52-28. I give a ton a credit to them and I hope our team recognizes that we stayed with our defense and didn’t give them easy lay ups,” said head coach JimCrowley.“Ithoughtwereboundedexceptionallywellwhichstoppedeasypointsandthat’sour whole philosophy, we don’t want to give up easy scores.” AfteranopeningpossessionbucketbyCanisius, theBonniesscoredonfiveofitsnextsixpossessions, going on a 12-3 run highlighted by a Jenkins’ and Andrea Doneth three-pointer for an 14-5 score at the 10:51 mark.
