Ratepayers and development contribution payers will have to pick up the cost of a $1.859 million payout to developers, after the Tasman District Council lost a legal battle involving the Oaks Business Park subdivision on Lower Queen St. The High Court ruled last week that the council is liable to pay defunct developer VPCL full market value of $1.48 million for land council purchased in 2009. The council had contested the valuation of the 1.6 hectare lot it required for a drainage reserve and agreed to pay about $120,000.

The council’s chief executive Lindsay Mc-Kenzie, says they have accepted the court’s ruling and will not be appealing the decision. He concedes council made a mistake agree-ing to purchase the land without knowing its value and had been “shocked” by the $1.48 million price tag. “The deed was deficient,” Lindsay says. “It didn’t sufficiently define the valuation meth-od and it effectively put the price to be paid into the valuer’s hands. “That wouldn’t happen today. You would have the valuation as an input into a negotia-tion, rather than leaving it up in the air.”The deed was signed by former chief execu-tive Paul Wylie, as well as mayor Richard Kempthorne “on advice from the chief ex-ecutive”, Lindsay says. However, Lindsay says the decision to sign

the deed needs to be put into the political context of “council bending over backwards” to help a significant development proceed. Although council has “paid a premium” for the VPCL development it has produced a number of benefits for the district, including Transport Nelson Limited moving into the Oaks Business Park.Justice Clifford did have some good news for council last week when he dismissed a sec-ond claim by VPCL for $572,500. The claim was for payment for a 0.55 hectare lot it sold to the council for protection of heritage trees - council had already paid $27,000 for the lot.Last week’s rulings are unlikely to be any compensation for the original developers who purchased the land for $5.25 million in 2005. VPCL went broke in 2012 leaving its direc-tors and mainly Dunedin-based investors with nothing.

Raising $100,000 may seem like an impossible task, but bit-by-bit the Corkill family are get-ting closer to “dad’s new lungs”.Since Waimea Weekly reported the plight of Mike and his fam-ily, the community has jumped in behind the family and al-ready raised more than $6000, with plenty more fundraisers in the pipeline. Mike, his wife Julie-Ann, and their five children, have been selling raffle tickets and collect-ing money in the Richmond Mall with huge success. From the mall campaign alone the family has raised more than $3000. Local businesses such as Colour Plus and Richmond Brake and Clutch have donated tins and a free warrant of fit-ness. Kevin Gear from Colour

Plus says he decided to help af-ter seeing the family’s story in the Weekly. “We need to get in behind him. It’s a sense of com-munity, that’s what it is.”Brumby’s on Hardy St have offered to have a tin in their store and give a percentage of its muffin profits to the family. Waimea College will be hav-ing a mufti day next week with proceeds going to the cause and Mike’s eldest daughter, Cassie, is hosting a garage sale this Saturday. Anyone want-ing to donate items can email [email protected] or drop them off at 3 Fergusson St, Stoke, where the garage sale

will be held.Mike says the response from the community has given him new vigour and he’s busy or-ganising a quiz evening and auction for next month. “It’s been really nice talking to people in the mall and the mall itself have also been great. Manager Belinda has bent over backwards for us and it really shows they’re keen to help our community.”Mike needs to raise $100,000 for a lung transplant. He’s been told that if he doesn’t get the transplant he could be dead by the end of the year. His children have labelled the campaign: “Dad’s new lungs”.If you’d like to donate to Mike’s operation his bank account de-tails are: 38-9006-0093683-03.

They wore red, but the smiles of 500 women walking or running to celebrate mother’s day was the standout of the Jennian Homes’ Mother’s Day fun run on Sunday. The fun run is now in its seventh year and, while giving mothers the chance to spend their special day with family and friends, it also supported the Heart Foundations Go Red for Women cam-paign, raising money that is vital for life-saving research into women’s heart disease. Fun run organiser Daryl O’Reilly says the event had already received a record number of entries by last Tuesday morning and saw 544 women take part in the fun run on Sunday. Nelson mother Vanessa Donald says it was the first time she’d taken part. “I decided to do it because my daughter and I started running to-gether. We’ve done the women’s day out up in the

Maitai and we’re keen to keep it going, thought it would be a nice thing to do together on mother’s day.”The fun run was a 5km-long loop around the Richmond area following the Walkway Reserve and it was able to raise around $10,000 through registrations. “I think the major success of our event on Sun-day was the number of woman who took time out on mother’s day to complete the 5km walk / run,” says Daryl. “Five hundred and forty four participants entered the event, benefitting their own heart and in doing so, supported the Heart Foundations ‘Go Red for Women’ campaign. We are very proud to be able to give back to the com-munity with this initiative to raise awareness, keep families together for longer and help NZ women lead heart-healthy lives.”

The percentage of Nelson’s “over 65” popula-tion is expected to double in less than 20 years, which means significant growth will be needed in housing, rest homes and the health sector, a forum of agencies which care for the elderly has heard.Bill Findlater of the Nelson Economic Develop-ment Agency, says that a study worked on by the EDA shows that, by 2031, 26 per cent of Nelso-nians and 29 per cent of Tasman residents will be over 65. That compares with around 14 per cent currently in each region. The stats were from a report that the EDA pre-pared last year and was delivered in front of 42 organisations that work in the aged-care sector. The forum was organised by Grey Power Nel-son, and aimed to get each of the 63 agencies working together towards a strategic plan for dealing with more retired people.Bill says the figures show a significant opportu-nity for Nelson businesses to cater for the group. “People retiring now still want to live their life and stay active, but they will most likely be look-ing at smaller accommodation, technology that makes their life easier and access to services.”He says the medical workforce alone is set to grow by 50 to 75 per cent between now and 2026, and that aged-care and health care de-mand is set to rise by 37 per cent.Grey Power president Neville Male says the fo-rum was a success and believes that getting each agency working together will be of huge benefit for the region. “Every one of these organisations is doing good work in their own right, but there is very little linkage between them on how they can work together for the future good.”The likely outcome of the forum would be a working group set up to develop a strategy, with the Primary Health Organisation, District Health Board, Age Concern and the Positive Aging Forum expected to take leading roles.A “community hub” of services was a popular idea, says Neville, and would mean older people could go to the hub with all of their concerns and be pointed in the right direction from the one place. It would also mean the current or-ganisations would work together more, passing information from one agency to another.A draft strategy is expected to take several years to complete but work would start in the next few months, says Neville.

When Jon Toogood was at high school he had one musical mentor, although his approach was some-what unorthodox. “He just said he knew nothing about heavy metal so he just sat outside and had a ciga-rette while we had a jam,” the lead singer from Shihad says, during a two day visit to Waimea College. “That was my band mentor. He was in a band called the Holidaymak-ers. I’m so glad that’s what he did though. We’d be playing and he’d just be reading a book.”Jon was visiting Waimea College as part of the New Zealand Music Commission’s Music Mentoring Programme during New Zealand Music Month and in the lead up to Smokefreerockquest, which is on this Friday.

He used his near-20 years of experi-ence as the front man of Shihad and The Adults to conduct workshops on composition, performance, get-ting over nerves and how pop songs were arranged. His mentoring was a lot more professional than what he spoke of in his teenage years, but he did joke that “I just like stealing all of their ideas” after he had worked with a Year 10 band. “This will be on the next album. The guitar was cool man. Actually the bass line is pretty cool.”Flynn Eathorne was on the bass and was thrilled with Jon’s praise. “I learnt that I could actually write music,” he says. “He’s a well-known musician and he’s had plenty of success, so any tips from him were good.”

The airfield at Nelson Airport has been home to the Royal New Zealand Airforce for the past 10 days and on Saturday they opened it up to their neighbours. Around 100 personnel from Base Ohakea set up camp on the airfield last Monday, as they deployed for Exercise Wiseowl. Exercise Wiseowl is a Pilot Training Squadron de-ployment that is designed to test the military stu-dent pilots in elements of military flying. Forty tents were erected on the airfield provid-ing for field catering, a field medical facility, an administration unit, an operations headquarters, a logistics unit in charge of camp supplies and spares, and a maintenance centre for the aircraft.

Last Saturday also saw the camp open its gates to the public, giving students, organisations and any-one else interested the chance to visit the airfield, meet the Air Force personnel and find out more about the Air Force. Children got the opportunity to try on the mili-tary gear, sit in the planes and explore some of the temporary facilities. “I think it’s awesome,” says Richmond’s Sharona Stanton. “I love helicopters and planes, plus the kids are having so much fun, I’m even having fun. We just came to have a look at what they do and how they do it and everything they have.” The Air Force will end its exercise and leave Nel-son on Thursday.

When someone tells you they are planning to spend three months walking the length of the South Island – most of it by themselves– one of the first questions you have to ask is “why?”Zascha Mann, a former Nay-land College student who re-cently graduated from the University of Otago, is set to undergo the 1360 km journey through the Te Araroa Trail in September, and he has a couple of reasons why he’s doing it. “I guess it starts way back in my childhood. My family used to always go on holidays to the Marlborough Sounds, Golden Bay and the Nelson Lakes, and we’d always do awesome out-door activities like tramping and kayaking, and pretty much everything outdoors,” he says. “It developed a real love for the outdoors and a real passion for adventure.“After high school I went on my O.E and through Asia. I really got to see the affect pol-lution can have on the natural environment and it made me realize just how lucky we are in New Zealand. It’s a pretty beau-tiful country.”

Zascha studied neuroscience in Dunedin for three years, and was hungry for another adven-ture when he graduated. “So I guess all of that stuff led to the idea of traveling New Zealand and I wanted to do it in a way where I could make a small dif-ference to the planet, and may-be inspire some people as well.”The 22 year old, who lives in Appleby, is using the adven-ture to fundraise for animal welfare charities Save Animals from Exploitation (SAFE) and World Wildlife Fund (WWF), and has already raised half of his $3000 goal. He will be holding stalls at

markets across the region, in-cluding the Nelson Saturday Market on May 24, to hope-fully raise the rest. “I want to inspire positive change in New Zealand and, once I’ve done the walk, I’m going to tour the South Island and visit schools and do sustainable activities.”He will take a sleeping bag, tent, camera and a week’s worth of food on the journey – picking up food packages his dad plans to drop off in towns along the way.For more information on Zascha’s trip, or to donate, visit http://zaschamann.wix.com/leaveonlyfootprints

www.ezytravel.co.nz

Next month police throughout the country will be opening up their doors and holding open days, where the public can come and see what policing is really like. For Nelson Bays ,the open day will be held at the Nel-son Police Station. People will be able to see a number of the displays we had at the First Responders parade and as well we have some of the agencies we work really closely with there such as Victim Support. We're hoping people will take the opportunity to take a closer look at what we do and have a chat to their local police. There will be opportunities to have a ride in a police car and see certain parts of the Police Station. You'll be able to test your speed against the speed camera and get up close to some of our Armed Offenders Squad members. No doubt, the most popular members of the squad - our canine compan-ions - will be making an appearance as well. For us, the open day is about getting to know our communities better and to send a mes-sage that we are approachable and willing to take the time to chat with you. We rely heav-ily on the positive relationship we have with our communities in Nelson Bays, to be effec-tive in the work we do. I can tell you from my time in other areas that not all police areas have the benefit of the level of support we get from the people of Nelson. We'll be putting more information out as we get closer to the date, but for now put Saturday, 14 June in your diary and I hope to see you there.

The Morepork Dart Club turns 60 years old this month and with the sport gaining in worldwide popularity its members say it’s a good time to be a member. The club started life in a garage in Tahunanui, then moved to another garage in Tasman St be-fore buying its own clubrooms at Ben Cooper Park in Richmond. Its 28 members, ranging in age from 18 to 85, meet once a week and its old-est member, Joy Andrews, says it’s great fun. “I’ve never been one to enjoy the heat too much, so darts has been a great sport for me.”Club member Steve Wastney says the club bought the Ben Cooper Park building after a rugby league club ended its lease and Tasman

District Council were weighing up its options. The club put forward a proposal to buy it and says it’s served the membership well.“It’s a great place for us and we’ve seen a really steady group of players over the years.”He says membership has increased slightly over the past few years, including more younger play-ers. “Having people like Courtney involved is great, it shows that no matter how old or young you are, you can play darts. It’s a challenge for everyone.”To celebrate the milestone, the Morepork Dart Club will host its rivals of 50 years, the Flyrite Dart Club from Christchurch, on Queen’s Birth-day weekend.

NEW SEASON

Another restaurant has opened at the site vacated by Rob Roys, and its new owner believes Richmond could have lost people to town if it hadn’t been replaced by another place to eat.Armadillo’s opened last Monday and Tony Crosbie, who also owns the Star & Garter, says the focus will be on food and functions, compli-menting the Star & Garter. “They’re two completely different markets,” he says. “The theme is good food and family friendly.”Armadillo’s is open seven days a week from 11am until late. “This

is for food, functions and the after-work crowd. Richmond needs it more than ever with the way the positivity is and how it’s all happen-ing.”Tony hopes the restaurant, which has ten employees, will bring more people to Richmond. “[If the res-taurant had not been replaced] we would’ve lost people to town. At least now we can keep people in the precinct of Richmond.”Rob Roys closed in February after going into liquidation. The building and land are owned by Tasman Dis-trict Council.

Mother’s Day fun run:I’ve been to the Jennian Homes’ Mother’s Day run for the past

three years and this year was the best. It was really neat to see so many families out together enjoying the sun and their mums! (Via text).

Thank you message:Thank you so much to all the people who have stepped for-

ward to help us raise money for our dad’s new lungs. We’d like to thank a few people: Avon rep Monique Hardi-man for donation of a gift box for the mothers day raffle and congratulations to Wendy Pearson for winning the raf-fle. Can Plan for wiping our outstand-ing bill, Copy Art for the signs, Barry at Richmond Brake & Clutch for the oil change and power steering on our fam-ily car.Kevin from Colour Plus for the dona-tion buckets, Tina-Maree Thomas from Proper Snacks Ltd for the crisps. Club Waimea for the free use of the hall for the upcoming dinner and dance.

To all the peo-ple who gave on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the R i c h m o n d Mall.Belinda de Clercq, man-ager of the R i c h m o n d Mall for let-ting us have a donations

stall. M.R & K.A Hoddy for their ex-tremely generous donation of $1000. Noel Leemings Richmond for the PS3 which will be auctioned off, McGlashen Pharmacy for the make-over voucher, Queen Street Pharmacy for the two gift packs to be auctioned off, Stirling Sports Richmond and Made For Men Richmond. To all the other people who have donat-ed so far, thank you and to all the peo-ple offering their services, we will be in touch soon. Last, but not least, we’d like to thank the team at the Nelson Weekly and Waimea Weekly, without them we would have no chance of raising the money. From our family thank you so much, we have raised about $7000 so far. Corkhill family, Richmond.

Should the wood burner rules be re-laxed in Nelson?

Some people can’t afford to heat their homes with electricity and

we all know nothing heats your home like a wood fire does. Wood fires aren’t the issue, smoky chimneys, because of wet wood or insufficient combustion, and rubbish burning are the cause of poor air quality. Glen James Tomlinson.

They also have to bring back proper fires. This rubbish, clean-

air one I had to install is useless and the only way to make it heat all night is to load it up before bed and close it right down, creating smoke. Rather than old ones where you could wait till it’s burnt more and then shut it down properly

with less smoke and still be warm in morning. Tristan Fish.

I think so! In a power cut with-out a wood burner or gas, how

are you meant to keep the house warm? I know Richmond Wood and Coal do a layby system so you can afford “good wood”. Felicity Watson.

Yes, they should!! Power prices are ridiculous enough without

being forced by a council full of power trippers to use electricity that a lot of residents can’t afford. If the council had the best interests of the people in mind they would know this. But they don’t. Janelle Thorpe.

There was always going to be a price to pay for clean air - inter-

esting that when an environmental is-sue clashes with a social issue the Green Party is nowhere. Mark Roden.

It’s the tree-hugging greenies, living in an idealistic bubble

on your council, doing this. Trees are a renewable resource not all electrical sources are. Andy Cameron.

No, absolutely friggin not! There are other ways of staying warm,

draft stoppers for doors, close curtains early, rug up, etc. Think smarter people, save what $$ you can and install HRV. We did and it’s the best decision we ever made. For most of the winter last year, we were always in credit with our pow-er. Think smarter people, stop whining. Sharon May Patterson.

Do you remember the ‘round tuit’? That thing that you were always planning to do but never quite got around to it!Don’t put off doing something you’ve always thought you’d like to – take the opportunity when it arises. It is inevitable that tutors and courses will come and go based on either community demand or their personal availability to tutor. Over the past twelve months we have sadly said goodbye

to some long-standing tutors and courses such as Lance Trolle’s Picture framing, music teacher Mike Gough, and chef Luke Macann’s popular cooking classes. Upholstery’s Fay Vaughan will be moving on to new work opportunities next term and our deaf Tutor Rachel Summers will be relocating to Wellington next year.On the upside we are excited to have new tutors and courses coming onstream. This term it is a pleasure to welcome the creative Sarah Campbell teaching custom-made fabric lampshades. We welcome the passion for knitting and teaching

skill that Jessica Powers brings and the continual demand for a digital photography course has been responded to by teacher and keen photographer Ray Salisbury. Golden Bay resident, mosaic artist, Elvira Pontier and sewing guru Margy Meys will once again offer weekend courses. At Nayland Adult Community Education we are very proud of the passion with which tutors deliver classes. These talented and dedicated

people do so because they get a buzz from sharing skills with adults who want to keep learning new things, uncover latent talent or increase confidence levels.Don’t delay any longer – learn what you’ve always thought you’d like to. Rachel Sutton and Linda Bunt with some of the icing decorations they were learning to make at the Nelson Cake Decorators Guild workshop in Richmond. Photo: Simon Blooomberg.

Cake decorating used to be a dying art but now, thanks to the popularity of re-ality television food programmes like Ace of Cakes and Cupcake Wars, it’s slowly making a comeback. And that popularity was evident at the Nelson Cake Decorators and Sugar Art-ists Guild workshop at the Richmond Church of Christ on Saturday, when about 30 enthusiastic amateurs spent the day learning some new tricks. Blen-heim’s Cathy Ferguson was the guest decorator and she showed the group the finer points of making icing butter-flies and decorating cupcakes.“Cake decorating is quite a nerdy thing to do but we’ve been lucky because it’s been popularised by all the television

shows,” president Maureen Grage says. “We have monthly meetings and after a conference last year we have picked up a few more members.”Although all their members are hobby decorators, Maureen says some of them “are very, very good”. She says three members, Rachel Sutton, Lois Diaper and Linda Bunt, have won lots of com-petitions and “they are as good as any of the professionals”. Maureen says it takes years of practise and learning to become proficient at cake decorating and even longer to be-come an expert. It is an extremely intri-cate art that requires a lot of patience, taking two to three weeks to decorate some cakes.

She says the guild’s members typically start off as home bakers who are frus-trated that their cakes “don’t look quite as good as they do in the cookbooks”. So they take some lessons and join a club and gradually improve their skills.“It’s so much fun and better than doing housework,” Maureen says.Linda, who has been decorating cakes for 20 years, says she started after one of her friends became very good at the art. Linda took a night class at Nayland College to learn the basic skills and has never looked back. “It’s so creative and really rewarding,” Linda says. “It’s very special when you decorate a cake for someone and then you see the joy on their face when you give it to them.”

What is love? Some years ago elderly Aunt Maureen was thrown down the bank steps. In her eighties, she was coming out of a bank on The Terrace in Wellington. The exit was one of those steadily moving revolving doors. She tripped

and the door caught her. She remembered lying on the steps and lots of smartly dressed people just walked by. The man who stopped and helped her had long hair, wore black leather and was tattooed. He spoke gently and comforted her while they waited for the ambulance. I don’t know what motivated the man but he showed love in action.

In 1999 Mother Teresa was voted the most widely admired person of the century — she came top by a huge margin. Mother Teresa reached out to those who were rejected, unwanted and unloved. In 1952 she opened the first Home for the Dying, a free hospice for the poor in Kolkata (Calcutta). Those brought to the home received medical attention and were afforded the opportunity to die with dignity, according to the rituals of their faith; Muslims were read the Quran, Hindus received water from the Ganges, and Catholics received the Last Rites. “A beautiful death,” she said, “Is for people who lived like animals to die like angels — loved and wanted.”

Mother Teresa’s fame is because in her we see unconditional love in action. This was her motivation; “I see Jesus in every human being. I say to myself, this is hungry Jesus, I must feed him. This is sick Jesus. This one has leprosy or gangrene; I must wash him and tend to him. I serve because I love Jesus.” Jesus said that when we care for the least important and most vulnerable, then we are caring for Him and doing His work.

One day when I was frantically busy I left my credit card and money behind at an ATM. When I raced back an elderly gent smiled and handed me my money and card. That day I saw Jesus’ care, love and concern in that action.

Doing random acts of kindness does make the world a better place. It can be the smallest thing - Mother Teresa suggested that we greet each other with a smile for with that smile comes peace.

A fantastic local playgroup

Friends n’ Fun is a Ministry of Education certified community playgroup operating on Monday and Thursday mornings, 9:30–12:00 pm.

Parents can come along with their babies and preschoolers. They can all join in our fun, active music and movement programme, with dancing and singing. We incorporate parachute, ribbons, beanbags and musical instruments.

After the music and movement we go to the creche for morning tea, where the children play with the toys, sand, water, books and puzzles or they can participate in creative activities.

It is a great place to meet others particularly if you are new to the area.

I really love Friends n’ Fun because I enjoy seeing the children grow in confidence and seeing the long lasting friendships develop.

— Carol Sardella

Youth discuss science & religion

Every fortnight on a Sunday we have a group for youth aged 15 and older from 5 pm to 7 pm. The night consists of a shared meal at the beginning and an in-depth discussion on the night’s topic. This year we have topics as

diverse as finding one’s purpose in life, relationships, the relationship of science and religion, self-image, youth mental health, the Biblical view of the afterlife, and ethics. We have a great group of youth attending and newcomers are always welcome.

The topic on the 25th of May is “a brief history of science and religion”, so come along and bring something to share for tea. Any questions? email: [email protected].

Congratulations on your new look!

Scissor Art hair salon in Brightwater has under-gone it’s own major make over and owner Sharon Stockdale is loving the new stylish look. The aim of the renovation was to bring the salon into this cen-

tury and create a comfortable place for clients as well as a great work environment for the stylists. “It’s a fresh, crisp, clean look. It’s great, I love it,” says Sharon. “I didn’t want to have anything ul-tra modern, I wanted to keep it comfortable and a place where people feel like they can bole on in and say hi.” Scissor Art provide a full set of services from cut to colour and have a talented team includ-ing Bidi Marquet, a fully qualified stylist with over 10 years experience and Neisha Woodward, a fully qualified senior stylist with over eight years experience. Bidi has a particular talent for blondes while Neisha is outstanding with any colour. Sharon herself has been in the industry for 30 years and is a ‘Jack of all trades.’ She took over the business nine years ago and before that had been hairdressing all over from Australia to Christchurch. She worked from home when she had her children, tutored for three years at Polytech and was also involved with WOW for three years. “That was an amazing experi-

ence,” says Sharon. “I’d never been to WOW before but I worked for them through NMIT, got to see the show and I swear to God it was just WOW the whole time. It was a very cool and interesting experience.” Scissor Art is the only hair salon in Brightwater and Sharon says their country location has no effect on the high quality services they offer and their constant training means they are always learning new skills to benefit their clients. Every six

weeks they have a technician from the Keune range of hair products work with them to add to their knowledge of techniques, mostly in colouring. “Colouring is such a progressive thing, its changing all the time. Different looks, different techniques, just bending the rules a little bit and having a little bit of a play.” They also get together every five weeks and do each other’s hair which provides not only a chance for staff training but a social time

Call in and check out the fresh, crisp, clean new look at Scissor Art.

when they all get to work together. They stock and use a variety of Keune products which includes a paraben and sulphate free range as well as the exclusion of PPD’s from their hair colours which limits the possibility of skin irrita-tion. The salon also offers facial waxing, eyelash tinting and eyebrow shaping. Customer satisfaction is important to Sharon and the team at Scissor Art. They are a professional, reliable, enthusiastic and creative team of stylists that strive to give their clients the best possible re-sults. They always take the time to get to know cli-ents and provide that special personal touch. An up to date magazine, a coffee and a chat are all part of the service; some of Sharon’s best friends started out as her clients. Scissor Art is also big on being a part of and contributing to the community so this year they are tak-ing part in the Pink Ribbon event for the Breast Cancer Foun-dation. It’s running through the month of May and involves host-ing breakfast, morning

tea, afternoon tea or dinner. People attending pay ten dollars and will receive nibbles and a drink. Although the event at Scissor Art is invitation only, Sharon would appreciate any donations for the cause which can be made under the name of Sharon Stockdale by visiting the Pink Ribbon website. “We’ve had clients just diagnosed with breast cancer. It’s hard to single out a cancer to support but this is our way of putting something back into the community.” You’ll find Scissor Art at 56 Ellis St, Brightwater, or call them on 542 3839 to make an appoint-ment.

To further enhance our range we have Robertson machinery which focuses on stock feeding and fertiliser spreading equipment with Hardi sprayers and Stoll front end loaders to add to this. Top Con GPS systems offer every-thing from a basic light bar guidance to a full auto steer system in a tractor, from sub meter accuracy to two centimetre accuracy. While the Mainland Tactix were in town to play the Central Pulse in the ANZ Champi-onship game at Saxton Stadium on Sunday night, Weekly netball reporter Carol Cook met up with the only local in the team. De-spite rolling her ankle two days before the game, Zoe Walker still made the trip to her home town and took Carol through a week in the life of a professional netballer.

Saturday, May 3: The Tactix travelled to Brisbane to play the Queensland Firebirds. The team arrived at 2pm and, after check-ing into their hotel, they had a refreshing wind – down walk along the beach before dinner and bed. After breakfast, the team did their “walk through” at the Gold Coast Convention & Exhibition Centre. The girls then went for a drive and enjoyed a coffee. Lunch was followed by a rest period which is up to the individual – a wee nap, a chill out or maybe straighten your hair! Then there is the pre-match food, which resembles a second brekkie, and toasted sandwiches. The all-important strapping is next on the check list. Although the Tactix did not come out on the right side of the ledger, losing 52-69, there were some great peri-ods of play and they did outscore the Fire-birds in the third stanza. Monday: While the usual plan of attack is an early flight home, they didn’t actually

leave until 6pm. So after a team debrief the players had free time, where the girls caught up with fam-ily, did a wee bit of shopping at the mall or just chilled out at the beach, before re-grouping for the flight home which touched down at 11.30pmTuesday: The girls had the luxury of a sleep in, before head-ing in for a light weights session fol-lowed by pilates, yoga and stretching, so they could continue their recovery. Zoe had a massage – legs and lower back-be-fore heading home to cook dinner. Zoe flats with team mate Nicola Mackel and a male friend. And Zoe “thinks” she picked up her books for a bit of study in the evening. Zoe is study-ing Applied Science through Otago Poly-technic and does the maximum two papers allowed during the season.

Wednesday: Training is 9am – 12pm, with Zoe arriving at 8.30am in time to get her

strapping done. It’s a netball session – to work on what came out of the debrief, how to improve for the next game. Coach Leigh Gibbs constantly asks her players what worked, what went wrong, what needs to be done which gives the players the re-sponsibility for some decisions. Then there is the “Honey Badger” portion of training – hard core condition-ing, tough, specific, short sharp stuff, jumping, lunging, body on body. Zoe went to work at Wax Glow, a candle factory who allow Zoe to fit in work around her net-ball commitments.Thursday: Sees a heavier weights ses-sion when they train from 4-7pm, where

they look to learn from Wednesday and put into a game scenario. They view foot-

age of their next opposition, where they look for where they are most vulnerable, most strong, common themes in play. Thursday wasn’t a good training for Zoe as she rolled her ankle, which may be season ending. The physio was on hand to quickly assess the situation, and it is she who books appointments with doctors and specialists.Friday: A day spent dealing with her in-jury, with most of the morning with medi-cal team. Friday is a “self directed day” – if your body is tired or you have any “niggles” you might choose to do a pool session, or a light bike session. If you feel the need you might have a hard-core bike session. It is very much a case of being honest with yourself and where you are at. On Fri-day Zoe and team mate Hayley Saunders went out for lunch and bit of retail therapy, which helps any girl get over a disappoint-ing injury!Saturday: The Tactix team flew to Nelson Saturday morning and had a great coffee at the Oxford Street Cafe, before heading to Saxton Courts for signings with Nelson’s young fans. Then it was back to the hotel for lunch before training at Nelson College for Girls’ Alison McAlpine Health & Fit-ness Centre from 3-5pm. Zoe was given a pass to stay at her parents’ home (she would have been with the team had she not been injured) where she received a whole lot of lovin’ from proud parents Jenny and John.

The 2014 netball season got under-way in glorious weather conditions. Premier 2 has been re-introduced this season, with 60 minute games. The lengthened game may be a challenge to some of the teams early on, as it is usually the last few minutes in each quarter when some struggle.Top seeds Nelson Col-lege for Girls A met promoted Richmond Black, and it was the college team who hit the ground running to score four unanswered goals to open their ac-count. However, once Richmond found their rhythm they scored on their own centre pass seven times and went into the first break trail-ing 8-14.Richmond played their best netball in the sec-ond period, with Jess Anderson moving from wing de-fence to wing attack where she de-livered some great ball to her goal shoot, Jenelle Strickland. After a shaky first quarter, Janelle found her range and was strong on the re-bound for the second opportunity. Richmond won the quarter 11-9.Nelson lifted their work rate after

the major break with Ellie Bell di-recting play through the court, she found the circle edge time and time again to put in quality ball to her shooters. It is often stated that the third quar-ter is the championship quarter and Nelson hammered that theory home to the tune of 18-10.Richmond’s Janelle McGregor

toiled tirelessly against the ac-curate Abbey Franklin. Overall, Richmond coach Deb Vincent, was pretty happy with her team’s performance and felt there is con-fidence within the team that they can compete in the higher grade, despite coming out on the wrong side of the ledger 39-54.

Richmond Athletic will face a side from Christchurch if they can beat Nelson College in the second round of the ASB Chatham Cup on June 2.Richmond Athletic were drawn against Nelson College in the second round of the 91 year old competition, the longest run-ning in New Zealand football, after both teams won on the weekend. Nelson College beat Blenheim club side Central Pirates 4-2 on Saturday, before Richmond put three goals past FC Nelson to win 3-0.The winner of the Richmond versus Nelson College clash will join three other Christchurch sides in the next round, before it opens up to a nation-wide draw.Richmond coach Marc Evans was pleased with his side’s per-

formance, comfortably seeing off FC Nelson thanks to two goals from Jamie Cresswell and a third to Gavin Peattie. “It’s what we expected. We’re play-ing nice football and the boys are confident,” he says.

And while a win in the next round would give Richmond the opportunity to test itself against a Mainland Premier League side, Marc says the fo-cus is still on the Nelson Pine Industries division one comp.

Two keen young Nelson netballers ap-peared in front of their biggest crowd ever on Sunday, when they took to the court at Saxton Stadium flying the flags of the Mainland Tactix and Central Pulse. Eleven year-olds Sofia Sampson and Dani McLellan won the opportunity through the ANZ Future Captains competition to meet Tactix captain Anna Thompson and Pulse captain Katrina Grant, before join-ing the two teams on court for the open-ing of the game.Sofia, who attends Waimea Intermediate School, says her favourite part of the night was carrying the Tactix flag out on to the court.

“It was really cool when the goal shoot Mwai Kumwenda put her arm around me and said ‘hi’. I felt really nervous, but also really, really excited.”Sofia has been playing netball for four years and says she loves playing centre. “You get to move around all the court, and get lots of space to run.”Dani, who attends Collingwood Area School, says she was happy to get to stand next to Irene van Dyk. “She’s tall, I felt like I was looking up a lot. She asked if I was nervous and, when I said I was, she said ‘we all are’.”Dani wants to play with the Tactix one day. “It would be so cool.”

It was another beautiful day in Nelson for our last Nelson Waimea Gun Club shoot.Clear blue skies with no wind made for perfect conditions for clay target shooting. With 35 shooters and 115 targets in competition to shoot and 25 Five Stand Sporting practice, it was pretty full on for the office. 25 Skeet - A Grade: 1st Neil Simpson 25, 2nd Keith Van Asch 23, 3rd Wesley Oldham 23. SG Waimea Old Boys RugbyWaimea Old Boys RugbyWaimea edged by WanderersStar & Garter Waimea Old Boys coach Mark Milne concedes the Tas-man Trophy may already be out of reach after losing two of their first three matches.Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers were too clinical in the first half, with Fletcher Matthews dotting down three times before Waimea Old Boys surged back into contention in the opening spell of the second half, thanks to tries by Kaide Whiting and new forward Jeff Lepa. But with the scores locked up at 20-all throughout the second half, Trael Joass finally broke the deadlock to score down the left hand flank, be-fore Jesse Pitman kicked a penalty to seal the 30-20 win and keep Wander-ers’ unbeaten record in tact. With no playoffs in the Bayleys Tas-man Trophy this year – just a full

round robin – winning every match is crucial. But Waimea have now lost two out of the first three games, which means frontrunners Wander-ers, Galbraith Nelson and Waitohi will need to drop at least two games each for Waimea to come back into the frame. “It’s going to be difficult from here,” Mark says. “But there’s still a long way to go, it’s just when there’s no playoff situation it does make it hard.”Despite the loss, Mark says the team can take confidence out of the fact they produced just “15 minutes of footy” and still came close to beat-ing Wanderers, which means there is still plenty of room for improve-ment. “We’re happy with where we are at. We know we’re good enough and we know we can compete with anyone.”

There will be plenty of action at Jubilee Park this Saturday, with Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys holding their annual club day.Every single one of the club’s teams, including all three senior teams, will be playing at home, and the coaches and players can’t wait. The day will be headlined by the Tasman Trophy clash between Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys

and Galbraith Nelson, which kicks off at 3pm. Waimea go into the game having lost two of their first three matches of the campaign, while Nelson have turned their slow start around and have a perfect record in the Tasman Trophy. Waimea co-coach Mark Milne is expecting a big day, with the Noel Barton trophy on the line as well as the added pressure of wanting to win

in front of a bumper crowd. “I think Nelson’s strength is the firepower in their backs. They’re pretty strong out there so the key for us will be to shut that down,” he says. “Club day is al-ways a good day. We always look forward to it, it’s good for the whole club. The strength of our club is through our JAB and the numbers there. We love supporting them and being part of it. But the game itself will be tough.”

In the Car Company division one competition, Waimea are still looking strong in their bid to defend the championship they won last year, despite losing twice to both Wanderers and Marist. Because the match is against another side from Nelson, points will be up for grabs for both competitions.Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys will also take on Nelson in the Car Company division two competition, which kicks off at 1:15pm. Waimea lost to Wanderers on the weekend, their first loss of the season, and will be quickly wanting to make amends this weekend. In other matches, Waimea Old Boys Women take on both Marist and Stoke in the second round of the ten-a-side tournament, with the first game starting at 1:45pm. All of the games will be played at Jubilee Park this weekend. Also featuring on club day is the new Waimea College Old Boys Under-18 side who will take on Moutere, from 12noon.But the day isn’t just about the senior teams, it’s also about the next generation of talent. And being one the largest JAB clubs in the Tasman Rugby Union, there will be 230 kids taking to the field. The number of JAB teams has risen to 20 this year, and JAB club captain Jeremy Salton is looking forward to having nearly 500 kids playing rugby at Jubilee Park in the morn-ing. “It’ll be huge. There will be 20 JAB games down there, let alone the senior games too. It’ll

be a huge day, it’ll be a sea of red and white.”Club president Duane Whiting says the Waimea Old Boys club day, which is sponsored by Hynds, is about bringing the whole club together. “It means the senior players can get down and support the junior players during the day, and help out with the young up-and-comers,” he says. Chiefs’ winger James Lowe was at JAB train-ing during the week and Jeremy says the young players love having the senior players down helping out. “It’s something to aspire to. James Lowe is a guy you’re seeing on the TV week in and week out, so it’s fantastic.”The club day begins with JAB rugby from 9:30am and goes right through until the end of the Tasman Trophy game. There will be a sausage sizzle and coffee for sale throughout the day, and all members are welcome to stay around at the clubrooms for a $5 roast at about 6:30pm, where they can hopefully celebrate some success from club day.

According to the latest reports, the snapper and kingfish are in good numbers at D’urville. Kingfish are starting to turn up at Stephens Pas-sage and snapper from 3- 5 kilos are in abundance all the way from Crosilles’s to Stephens. Kahawai have also been sighted in very large schools from the Boulder Bank to D’urville. Not much else happen-ing in Tasman Bay though as the fish have predominately headed to deeper, greener pastures northwards. As the fishing grounds are getting further away it is probably a good time to bring up the subject of boat safety. Many of us would regard ourselves as good skippers, probably having owned a boat for years, and consider that your experience would get you through most situations at sea, or you may be a novice that needs to learn some basic facts about being on the water. Either way you could always improve your knowl-edge of safety on the water.Brian and Hillary Tear are the lo-cal Coastguard Boating Education experts and they run the courses locally. A lot of people who own a boat will never have had any basic education regarding boating and even those of you that have could always up-skill. The most popular course is the Day Skippers course and, as a fishing club, we would highly recommend it to everyone, as on the water this information could be a life saver. It is an introductory course for all members of the family or crew, including those new to boating. It applies to a wide range of vessels including yachts, launches, power-

boats, PWCs, sea kayaks, and waka. Even if, like me, you have been boating for years, you will be sur-prised at how much you don’t ac-tually know and what you thought was right, is in fact wrong. Included in the course modules are basic boat handling, navigation, rules and regulations, emergencies and knot tying. If you think back since owning your

boat you will have incidences where you have been involved in an acci-dent, mishap or near miss of some kind, which may have been avoided had you been informed with some basic boating education. Far too many kiwis are becoming statistics by not knowing or doing the basic things right when out boating. By attending a course you can make sure you, your family and friends are a lot safer on the water.Other courses that might be inter-est are the boatmaster, VHF marine radio and outboard/inboard engine maintenance. For more information on these courses contact Brian or Hilary Tear on 547 3513 or [email protected]

Wanderers Wolves will be hoping to emulate their performance from the last time they played the Wairau Taniwha, when they head over to Blenheim this weekend. The Wolves, who are rebuilding this year with a squad that is made up mainly of players new to rugby league, lost 42-18 against the Tahunanui Tigers on Saturday. From their first seven games Wanderers have

won just once – that result coming against the Taniwha. But coach Duke Climo is well aware that this weekend’s opponents are a different prospect on their own turf. “I guess we have a bit of confidence but we’re very aware that, with the grape harvest over in Blenheim, they’ll have a lot of their players back,” he says. “They’re definitely a stronger team at home and now it’s going to be even stronger.”

Notice of Intention to Grant a Lease for Part of Tapawera Recreation ReserveNotice is given of the Tasman District Council’s intention to grant a lease of part of the Tapawera Recreation Reserve, under Section 54(1)(b) of the Reserves Act 1977. The lease area will be that formerly used by the local Scout Troop. The local Scout Troop has not been active for a number of years. The Tapawera Menz Shed group has an agreement with Scouting NZ to acquire its building, subject to Menz Shed obtaining a lease for the land from Council. It is intended to grant a five-year lease to the Tapawera Menz Shed, to undertake various activities associated with indoor and outdoor recreation. The lease will be for a land area of approximately 340 square metres, and will essentially limited to the area occupied by the existing building. The lease will only cover the land. The ownership of the building will transfer from Scouting NZ to the Tapawera Menz Shed group if the lease is granted.Further information may be obtained by contacting Robert Cant on Ph. 03 543 8400, or via email [email protected]. Written submissions or objections should also be sent to Robert Cant. Submissions or objections will be received until 4.00 pm on 11 June 2014. Please advise if you would like to be heard in relation to your submission.A copy of this notice, together with a plan of the lease area will be available on the Council’s website.

Notice of Proposal to Extend a Lease of Part of Brightwater Recreation ReserveTasman District Council is calling for submissions under the Reserves Act 1977, on its intention to extend a lease of part of the Brightwater Recreation Reserve. The Wanderers Sports Club currently has a lease on Centennial Park in Brightwater. The Club has requested an extension of the lease area to accommodate building extensions. The extensions would be built behind the southern wall of the current changing rooms. The extensions will provide for extra changing facilities and a ‘warm up room’. A small extension to the existing deck is also planned. If the club is granted an extension to its lease area, it will begin the task of fund raising for the extensions. The physical improvements are likely to gradually occur as demand and money allows. Any changes to the building are likely to be some time in the future, and will require normal building consents. The extensions will require the relocation of an existing shed. Plans of the proposed extensions and any other further information can be obtained by contacting Robert Cant on 03 543 8400, or via email [email protected]. Written submissions or objections should also be sent to Robert Cant. Submissions or objections will be received until 4.00 pm on 11 June 2014. Please advise if you would like to be heard in relation to your submission if a hearing is required.Copies of this notice, plus plans of the proposed extensions, will also be available on the Council’s website.

Tasman Speed Control Bylaw consultationThe Council is looking to begin consulting on amendments to the current Speed Control Bylaw. As part of the first stage of the process the Council is running a pre-engagement exercise. The views of Tasman communities are being sought on any areas they consider a speed limit review could be included as part of any changes put forward under the special consultative process. The Council is interested in your thoughts. Responses are required by 30 May 2014 as part of the first part of the community engagement process.Submissions can be made either via the online submission form found on the Council’s website or by completing forms located at Council Service Centres and libraries.

Water metering The Measurement and Reporting of Water Takes Regulations 2010 requires the reporting of water use for the whole calendar year, from 1 July to 30 June each year, rather than just the historical summer season. For Consent holders who use water all year around e.g. industry and frost protection, you are required to make water meter returns each and every week. To assist you in meeting the Regulation requirement of weekly readings during winter, the Council will accept a final reading and duplicate this reading through until Spring when water use generally commences again. Telling the Council when water use ends is very important so that the Council’s discretion can work. If you commence water use prior to Spring please contact the Council also. Ph. 03 543 8400.For Consent holders who have ceased water use please supply a final reading. For those who have already let the Council know you have ceased water use, thank you.
