Tadmor residents are trying to buy back their 100 year old church and cemetery, before it’s sold and turned into a house. The residents – most of them are farmers – formed the Tadmor Church Society and are hoping to raise $35,000 in order to keep the church and burial ground open to the community. The church services stopped about 20 years ago, and the building has predominantly been used for wed-dings and funerals since then. It’s currently owned by the Angli-can Diocesan Trust who received an offer from a potential buyer. But, with some public pressure, they have agreed to sell it to the soci-ety if they can raise $35,000 before October. If it is ever on-sold, they will have to come up with a further

$60,000 which makes up the cur-rent market value. The society has already managed to raise $15,000 and chairman Bruce Moffitt, whose grandfather donated the land which the church is built on in 1914, wants it to remain in the community. “Originally the land was given to them by my grandparents. The people donated all of the materials and everything to build the church, so it belongs to the community and it’s a pity we’ve got to buy it back,” he says. “A lot of people are still being buried in the cemetery and we want to keep it operating. We want to make sure people with relatives buried there

can still visit.”Bruce is happy with how the fun-draising effort is going, and the society was buoyed by a recent fundraising motorcycle ride with the Nelson Motorcycle Club which raised $2235. “We hope we can get to our target. We sent out over 100 letters to individuals who have shown an interest to give us a do-nation so we’re waiting for some of those to come in now. We’re nearly halfway there so we just need some support.”After they have completed the pur-chase, the residents and the society plan to hold a special service and a celebration to mark the church’s 100 year anniversary. To enquire about supporting the church, phone Bruce on 03 522 3039.

Police are very concerned about the number and fre-quency of fuel thefts from properties in the Nelson Bays area in recent months, and the lengths offenders seem prepared to go to.Between April 1 and July 2, there were 50 fuel thefts re-ported from properties be-tween Richmond and Mo-tueka. The incidents have included offenders forcing entry into enclosed yards, siphoning industrial machinery such as diggers parked on the road-side and siphoning from farm vehicles, farm storage

tanks and cars. Fuel tanks have also been taken from boats. In the most recent incident, police believe the offenders may have been disturbed by a property owner's dog in the early hours of Thursday morning while they were attempting to steal diesel at Hope. Cans of diesel were found hidden in a hedge and the family's labrador was found dead nearby. Sergeant Dave Prentice says police would like to speak to anyone who has information about people involved in this type of offending.

Are you looking forward to the opening of The Warehouse in Richmond? And do you think it will it have any effect on your shopping habits?

Tony Dyer, Richmond.

“Yeah I guess we are. I suppose it’s good to get Richmond up and going, it’s going to bring more people to Richmond.”

David Cook, Richmond.

“No, it’s not going to change my shopping habits. We’ll go to the local one instead of the one in Nelson.”

Pam Burgess, Brightwater.

“I will use it a bit. I like it for t-shirts and things. I would cer-tainly use it, in fact I can’t wait. Briscoes and the Warehouse would be the only reason we’d go into Nelson really.”

Marie Williams, Richmond.

“I’ll be still shopping at the mall here. I think it’s a great idea. I had to go into the Ware-house yesterday but if it had been here I definitely wouldn’t have gone into Nelson.”

It was a bluebird day at the More FM Rainbow Family Snow Day over the weekend. Delighted children gathered around the games tent for snow bulls-eye, lolly scrambles, sled-ding, and tug of war games, at Rainbow Ski Area. The weather also made for optimal snow machine condi-tions, and vice chair of the ski area, Hamish Neill, says punt-ers enjoyed the most manmade snow ever created there, due to the combination of cold nights and fine days.

“A bonus, because it’s more du-rable than natural snow and as a result more people come up,” he explains. And more people did go up, says marketing and events liai-son Georgie Tudor-Jones.“Excluding member card-holders which we have sold a lot of, we’ve sold over a hun-dred more passes against this time last year.”Weekend visitor Gavin Beatie says Rainbow Ski Area is a great place for groups of fami-lies to come because the layout makes it easy to keep track of children.

Hamish says they’re hoping the season kicks on from the good start they’ve had and that comes down to the weather. “A good snowfall at the end of July sets the season up, and, if this weekend is anything to go by, it’s already happening” says Hamish. The timing of this year’s good weather couldn’t be better as it coincides with Rainbow Sports Club’s 10th year celebration of owning and operating Rain-bow Ski Area. The next event to look forward to is the Summit Batty Rainbow Club Champs on August 9.

Nelson’s fishing community paused for a few hours on Sat-urday to remember the lives of those who have been lost at sea, but then it was all hands back on deck as the hoki sea-son gets off to another “very good” start.A big crowd lined the Port Nel-son waterfront for Saturday’s annual Blessing of the Fleet, which is both a poignant me-morial and a blessing for peo-ple from around the Nelson-Tasman region who will work at sea this season. The annual ceremony started on Friday night with a fireworks display and continued on Saturday when a fleet of fishing boats, offshore from Wakefield Quay, was blessed by Bishop Richard Ellena, Reverend Jeff Cotton and Father David Gruschow. The blessing was followed by a fresh fish market and a display by the Coastguard while spec-tators enjoyed fish and chips cooked by Nelson Rotarians.Seafarers Memorial Trust chairman and event organ-iser, Mike Smith, says he was delighted with the ceremony, which is not only a time for people to reflect on the tragedy

of lives lost at sea but also to ap-preciate the importance of the fishing industry to the region. “It’s hugely important. I believe that 26 per cent of the working population are involved in the fishing industry.”Although the blessing marks the official start of the hoki season, Sealord fishing gen-eral manager Doug Paulin says they have been catching hoki offshore from the West Coast for the last month. Sealord has three factory trawlers and three chartered Ukrainian ves-sels fishing for hoki and Doug says they have had a great start to the season. Sealord has 344 sea-going staff

and 250 land-based staff work-ing on the hoki season that is expected to continue until ear-ly or mid-September. Sealord has a quota for 43,000 tonnes of hoki and has purchased an-other 9000 tonnes of the total allowable commercial catch of 150,000 tonnes.Talley’s Nelson division man-ager Tony Hazlett says they already have three large vessels and “a heap of small inshore owner-operator boats” fishing for hoki off the West Coast.Talley’s has 135 people aboard the large trawlers and 430 land-based staff for the hoki season.“It’s looking very good for the future.”

Blessing for an already ‘very good’ fishing seasonNelsonians can have their say about

the proposed promenade along Rocks Rd after Nelson City coun-cillors unanimously agreed to send two concepts out for consultation. But that’s where the agreement on the plans ended, with several coun-cillors voicing their opposition to it, saying the road is too busy and dangerous for a cycling walkway to work effectively. The promenade could see a three to four metre wide pathway on the sea side of Rocks Rd that could be used by cyclists, walkers and jog-

gers. Both of the options going out for consultation will see a loss of car parks and the introduction of five pedestrian crossings along the road, with the one opposite Guytons to have traffic lights.Concept One will cost between $9-13 million, with $2-3 million of that from the council, the rest from NZTA. For Concept Two, the esti-mated cost is approximately $11-15 million, with $2.5-3.5 million from the council. The feedback period opens on July 24 and closes on August 25.

TDC weighs up sugary drinks banSugary drinks will be off the menu at Nel-son City Council events and venues, but Tasman District Council is undecided whether it will follow suit.Nelson mayor Rachel Reese made the an-nouncement at the Local Government NZ conference earlier this week – making it the first council in New Zealand to impose such a ban.The sugar-free drinks policy means that all venues like Riverside Pool, Founders and the council buildings will be free of sugary drinks. As will events it manages, like the masked parade, Ecofest, Opera in the Parkand Isel in Bloom.

Rachel says type two diabetes, childhood obesity and dental disease are major issues in New Zealand, and have a significant im-pact on our community. The announcement comes months after the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board became the first health board in thecountry to do the same. In July last year, Dr Robert Beaglehole, principal dental officer for the Nelson

Marlborough District Health Board, spoke with both councils, and told them a rise in obesity and teeth extractions could be prevented if sugary refreshments are no longer available at any event held on coun-cil property. “Last year we put to sleep al-most 300 adults and children and took out a lot of their teeth, and that’s costing the DHB between $1million and $1.5million a year,” he said at the time. “The majority of the teeth were taken out because they were rotten, which was because of too many fizzy drinks and it’s totally preventable.”Last year Tasman mayor Richard Kempthorne ruled out the ban, but this

week he says he was still weighing up the idea. “I’m still weighing it up and I think that Rob is wanting to have another chat with me. But at this stage we haven’t got definite plans to get into that space,” he says.Richard was not surprised by NCC’s deci-sion and says it doesn’t put any pressure on TDC to follow. “We have to think our own process through. It doesn’t put any pres-sure on us but we will reconsider do we do it, or not.”Richard says the main reason for not im-posing a ban comes down to the question of whether it should be a personal choice.

NEWSin briefLOCAL GOVERNMENT CONFERENCE: More than 500 people are in Nelson for the annual Local Government New Zea-land conference which ends today. The conference is being jointly hosted by Nel-son City Council and Tasman District Council and was held at the Rutherford Hotel from Sunday. The theme this year was “powering economies and building vibrant communities”.

NEW VENUE FOR ECOFEST: Ecofest is this year partnering with Growables gar-dening show at Founders Heritage Park to create a bumper day of “green” activi-ties, products, services and produce for Nelsonians. Formerly held at the Trafal-gar Centre, this year’s Ecofest has been repackaged to include a one day expo in both Nelson and Motueka, along with a series of interesting seminars and hands-on workshops.

PEDESTRIAN HIT BY CAR NAMED: Police investigating a fatal crash on the Moutere Highway last Sunday evening have identified the pedestrian who was killed. He was Thomas Kochwasser, aged 40, of Redwood Valley. His family in Germany have been advised of his death.

The Wakefield Country Players are about to warm up winter with celebrated New Zealand playwright Roger Hall’s Cin-derella, a traditional panto-mime.But is this take really tradition-al? Not quite, according to the cast behind it. They’ve described their version as a “Kiwi retelling of the leg-end, with King John Key, Cin-derella as an Intrepid Journeys wannabe and two captivatingly vile ugly sisters whose budget

shopping tastes are sartorially spectacular.”Throw in a fairy godmother whose wands only work with Wi-Fi, a pair of WOOFers, a disarmingly modest Prince (George, of course), the (very) odd villain or two, and they believe they’ve created hilarity and mayhem to warm the cold-est winter night. The cast and crew have been hard at work for three months to bring Cinderella to life in their ever-popular dinner thea-

tre format at the Wakefield vil-lage hall, from Friday, July 25 to Saturday, August 2. All Friday and Saturday per-formances are dinner/theatre, so event-goers can enjoy a ful-ly-catered midwinter feast and show for $38 per person.Wednesday performance is picnic night, so you can bring your own food and drinks while tea and coffee are sup-plied. Those tickets are $15.For bookings, contact Dixie McDonald, phone 541 8862.

Since 2007 Helicharter Nelson has been pro-viding people with both scenic and commercial flights around the Nelson/Marlborough region and the top of the South Island. Whether you want a hunting or fishing trip into the Ka-hurangi national park, or you need assistance trans-porting people or equip-ment into more remote parts of the area, pilot Matt Gibb has always been able to help. Now Helicharter Nelson is introducing its partner business Helich-arter Ag which will cover all areas when it comes to what helicopters can do for you. Together Matt and Gary Adams will be of-fering not only scenic and commercial services but a fast and efficient solution for many agricultural jobs too. Helicharter Ag services Nelson, Marlborough and the West Coast in all areas of aerial land management. Gary will be co-ordinating the agricultural side and is available for anything from aerial spraying, spot spraying, bulk or bagged solid fertiliser and aerial seeding to wilding pine control, mustering, animal control and surveying. Aerial application is a fast and

efficient method of product application and in some cases is the only solution for terrain that is not accessible from the ground. It’s not only an accurate way to apply product with the use of GPS but it can be applied straight away when

the land owner needs it and can often be just as economical if not more so than ground spread-ing machinery. The business may be new but pilot Gary Adams isn’t, with six years expe-rience in aerial work in the Nelson region. Gary and Matt are both civil aviation certified pilots, Growsafe ac-credited and are based in Brightwater on Eve’s Valley Rd. They’re lo-cal guys serving the lo-cal area so contact Gary Adams for more infor-

mation on Helicharter Ag’s services by calling (03) 542 2303, 027 2333 001 or email him at [email protected]. If you want to learn more about Helicharter Nelson then get hold of Matt Gibb on (03) 542 2330, 021 575 146 or email him at [email protected].

The entries are rolling in for the Car Company Charity Drive, with dozens already in before the deadline on August 22. Each week, Waimea Weekly will be speaking with an entrant about what the $10,000 would do for their group. This week we speak with the Nelson Sympho-ny Orchestra.

For more than 40 years the Nelson Sym-phony Orchestra has been delighting the senses of appreciative Nelson audi-ences and this week it will again take centre stage – although not at its tradi-tional home. For the vast majority of its history, the Nelson School of Music has been home to the orchestra. But with the earthquake status of the school of music meaning it remains closed, the orchestra has been practising at Old St John’s on Nelson’s Hardy St, and it’s there that they will perform this Saturday’s concert.Orchestra member Pam Seymour says as long as there’s a big crowd to watch

them perform they don’t mind where they play. “We’re always looking for people to fill the auditorium, the more who come along, the happier we are.”She says $10,000 would mean a great deal to the group because it would allow them to bring in internationally recog-nised musicians to play in Nelson. “That enables us to bring in international and national artists to play with us. That would bring enjoyment to the people of Nelson, because they are the ones who will come along and enjoy the music of these international artists.”The orchestra currently has between 40 and 50 members and this week they’ll be rehearsing two hours every day until the

concert on Saturday night. Pam says the concert will be a special performance of music written by those who died in World War One. “The music is not par-ticularly well known, but it is lovely and written by men who gave their lives.”The concert will also feature some po-etry written by soldiers and starts at 7.30pm in Old St John’s this Saturday night. For charities to be in with a chance of winning the $10,000 from the Car Com-pany, they just need to pick up an ap-plication form from any Car Company yard in Nelson, Tahuna or Richmond, or visit www.carcompanynelson.co.nz. Applications close on August 22.

Owen Hannah has always been a Ford man – he once owned an An-glia, and now he’s on to his third Zephyr, a 1965 Mark 3. But it’s not the look that appeals to Owen, and it’s not what is under the hood either. It’s the fact they make great towing cars. “When it was my main car I was towing a caravan. I’ve driven through both the North and South Island and when I had a stockcar I took that with it, too. It was a real workhorse back in its day,” the Richmond man explains. “But now it takes its place in the shed and when I go on Ford runs and other special trips.” And the next special occasion will be this Sunday, with the Nelson Classic Ford Car Club, who annu-ally celebrate Henry Ford’s birthday with a large get-together at Rabbit

Island. “We have a massive turnout, es-pecially if it’s a beautiful day. The number of cars is just incredible, some real old Model As, and there are quite a few Mark 2 and 3 Zeph-yrs, as well.”The event is open to the public from 11am until 2:30pm, and anyone with a Ford is welcome to bring it along, and have a slice of the birth-day cake. There will spot prizes and a bar-beque, and event-goers are also en-couraged to “bring lunch and make a day of it”.For further information, contact club president Diane Kemp on 545 0325.

Dog walkers well worth it:Gorgeous photo of my staffordshire Dex-ter and his friends on page 3 in this week’s

edition. Thank you:-) Love, love the pet sitters. They do an amazing job. Worth every penny. Dexter has been going for walkies with them for almost two years. Dexter loves them and he’s such a lovely dog. Credits to Wendy Mackay and Lasma and the rest of the team. Highly recom-mended. Suzy Evans.

Light Nelson:Glad we went Saturday! Think it should go for no less than 3 days. I don’t mind

making a gold coin donation either if that would help. Do think there was less to see than last year’s. Maybe because they were more spread out. Lacked the same effect and atmosphere. Don’t want to see it stop though. Nelson needs something like this in the winter. Suzy Andrew.

I think both...and have a route set out that everyone follows, so we all go the same

way. Helen Gowland.

Should be in one gate, out the other, in-stead of everyone going in all different di-

rections. I went home because I just couldn’t deal

with it any longer. My 3 year old was not having fun. So we missed out on most of it. Diana Sim.

Didn’t get to go this year as were away, but, for all the effort the organisers etc

put into it, thought it could easily run over two weekends and the week. Carol Edmonds.

No wonder it was horrible. 30 000 peo-ple all going every which way a parental

nightmare with toddlers. What lights we did ac-tually see was pretty cool though! Ngaire Piggott.

I KNEW it was gonna be mad busy, es-pecially with the weather! It’s FREE! It’s

family friendly, and it’s apparently amazing! What did people expect? Maybe a gold coin do-nation, or tickets needing to be purchased for the event might give a better forecast of how many people will go? Amiee Baker.

The place is amazing!! Given it’s school holidays, over a longer period would be

better. Bridget Hobden.

Larger venue. These people do an amaz-ing job for a free event but was way too

crowded. Maybe glow-in-dark arrows to show

direction people should be going. Debbie Dawkins.

Gold coin donation and a proper route. It wasn’t as good as last year but probably

cause we couldn’t see half of it. Had one slightly grumpy bub by the end of it. Maybe drag it out over 4 days. Tristan Fish.

Well, I thought Light Nelson was fantas-tic. Good on those people who stuck their

neck out to organise such an event and good on those artists who spent hours to pro-duce the magnificent work we saw. I know it was busy, but I can’t get over some people complaining about this fantastic FREE community event. Can’t wait for next year’s. Via text.

More medals for Brightwater VineyardsBrightwater Vineyards added to its reputation as producers of quality pinot noir this week, after it was announced that it had won two pinot noir medals at the Spiegelau International Wine Com-petition.Brightwater Vineyards 2012 Lord Ru-therford Pinot Noir was awarded a gold Medal and Brightwater Vineyards 2013

Nelson Pinot Noir was awarded silver. Gary Neale of Brightwater Vineyards says he was thrilled with the results from the competition. “These wines have not been released yet and this is the first time either of them has been judged,” he says. “To receive gold and silver in their first show is very good indeed. This all helps

to reinforce Nelson’s growing reputa-tion as a region for quality pinot noir.” Gary says this is now the ninth time in six years that a Brightwater Vineyards Pinot Noir has been judged to be of gold medal standard.Brightwater Vineyards’ 2012 Lord Ru-therford Barrique Chardonnay received a silver medal at the same event.

What about turning off the internet two eve-nings a week? That might be too hard – why not try one evening a week? The gadgets that are meant to make our lives easier to manage and enable us to be more connected seem to create more isolation, both within and outside our households. In the school holidays, our family were able to go back and visit a community in the jungle on Santo Island of Vanuatu, where we lived for two years several years ago. During our visit we had no internet and so gadgets designed to make us connected didn’t work, and yet we were more connected to each other than normal. For us it was a time to catch up with friends. Each evening was spent with a different house-hold, eating with them and remembering the past. On the evening we had our meal with the chief of the community, he invited everyone in the room to tell their story, before discussion moved to various social issues facing Vanuatu. It was a special night where we were all connected and present to each other. At the end of each day, we as a family would retire to an area where we could sit on the floor and talk to each other. We talked and laughed and shared memories – and because there was little electricity and we were not connected to the internet – the talking was deeper and precious. In some way, our time was not too dissimilar to when any family goes on a camping holiday or tramping and people play various games during the evenings enjoying good banter. The thing is, everyone was con-nected and the interaction was very special. Our last evening was back in “town” in order to connect to international flights, and, seated around a table eating normal food, I asked the family what they enjoyed most about the past week. Everyone agreed it was the evenings where we as a family were truly connected to-gether and fully present with each other, instead of some of us being glued to a smartphone or tablet or TV screen. The next day in the airport, even though we were sitting together, instead of being connected to each other, we were connected to the internet and no longer present to where we were sitting, and we lost something (that is hard to articu-late). I’ve decided that one evening a week I’ll be internet free (and screen free). Not because internet or screens are wrong – but because re-lationships are the most important thing in life. Relationship with God and with each other are the most important things in this world.

Just a thought...

Jon Parkes, St David's Pres-

byterian Church.

Winning a national award could open some new doors for Richmond business Waimea West Joinery.Alan and Kathy Gibb have been operating their business for 26 years but have never even en-tered a national competition. But that changed when their Laminex supplier Phil Thomp-son persuaded them put a large oak door they made for an Atawhai house into the Master Joiners Awards. And it was a case of first time lucky with Waimea West being presented with the Nelson Re-gional Award and the Herman Pacific Best Door or Window Award at the Master Joiner Awards dinner in New Plym-outh late last month.“We haven’t entered any-thing like that before but we got talked into it by Phil. He thought the door was a real statement and suggested we enter so we did and we won.”

Alan says the door’s made from imported American white oak and is 2.4 metres high by 1.2 metre wide and weighs around 120 kilograms. He says the client wanted a door that worked-in well with the wood and stone around the entranceway and Nelson archi-tects Arthouse came up with a great design.“It took Daniel [Watson] and I

about 40 hours to build. Amer-ican white oak is a perfect tim-ber for a door because it’s really stable and has a nice grain.”The judges commented on the “excellent workmanship and effect on this large handcrafted entrance door”.Alan and Kathy employ nine staff at their Beach Rd joinery including their son Blake and daughter Rebecca.

The trust behind Light Nel-son will expand the event next year, creating more space to ensure it can cope with its rap-idly growing demand.Around 40,000 people attend-ed Light Nelson last weekend, with an incredible 30,000 of those trying to get into the Queens Gardens. Because wet weather forced

Friday night to be canned, it seems the majority of event-goers waited until the last and clearest opportunity to go.That caused long queues throughout the gardens.Light Nelson Trust chair Bri-an Riley said that there was no way they expected 24,000 more people than the year be-fore, and the event will expand

outside the Queens Gardens. “Absolutely. The fact we’ve had such a fantastic response and turnout means we are now fast tracking our vision to the fu-ture,” he says. That vision should see Light Nelson extend along the Maitai, through town and could even include parts of Ta-hunanui or around the port.

Autorama are the registered motor vehicle trad-ers you can come to when you need an afford-able, good quality vehicle to get you and your family around and they are about to head into their third year at their conveniently located premises on Gladstone Rd. Two years ago they decided to combine the local Auto-rama car yards and the new site has “proven to be a great thing for us.”For quality used cars and great cus-tomer service, it’s hard to look past Rae and his friendly sales team. Rae Ricketts and Rick Thompson have a combined total of 85 years in the motor industry and can help you make the important decisions when it comes to purchasing a first time ve-hicle or trading in an old one because when it comes to buying a second hand vehicle, it pays to talk to the people who know them best. The business has been going very well over the last few years with plenty of people from within the community turning to Autorama for their vehicle purchase need,s as well as many from out of town calling on their knowledge and expertise. The fact they

can source such high quality used cars is a ma-jor draw card for local customers, so it’s hardly a surprise to see how quickly they’re snapped

up. “The years of experience we’ve got make us the guys you should come to when you’re looking for a car,” says Rae. “We stand behind what we sell and we offer good customer service with no pressure.” You can count on upfront and honest service when you buy a car from Au-torama, a business that is well known for having the best used cars available. Rae is proud to front a team that has such a great reputation and continues to uphold such a high standard. From small, fuel economic cars, town runa-bouts, cars suitable for a long distance traveller, 4WD’s, people movers and vans; Autorama have it all with pric-ing ranging from $5,000 to $25,000. That means they have a price and a car to suit everybody. Autorama have

190 cars in stock at the moment but, because that volume won’t all fit on

the yard at once, you’ll only see a portion of the huge range available. If you are looking for something specific, or can’t find what you had

what you are looking for, they’ll steer you in the right direction and if you come to the yard with specific features or even a colour in mind, they will be happy to source a car that suits your re-quirements. They rely on their extensive knowl-edge and friendly advice to help customers find the right car without using pushy sales tactics. If you’re ready to upgrade your current vehicles, trade-ins are welcome with great discounts on Autorama stock if you bring in your old vehicle, no matter what condition. They use a range of local businesses to get traded cars up to standard for selling or they’ll simply use them for parts. Autorama will never sell anything that doesn’t meet their standard. “So before you decide you car is only good for scrap, bring it in and see if it’s worth trading it in,” says Rae. After two years at their Gladstone Road location, Autorama would like to thank the many valued and loyal customers who help to make their business such a success. There are several cus-tomers who are choosing to return to Rae and the team when they are looking for an upgrade and they are bringing their friends and family with them. “We’re getting probably 30 per cent to 40 per cent of our business in repeat custom-ers or referrals which is a great thing to see,” says Rae. Sales team membe,r Rick Thompson, puts their success down to the no pressure, easy go-

ing and friendly environment which is exactly what you want when you’re buying car. Autorama are proud to see their second year at their Gladstone Rd premises, a convenient, easy access and spacious site, so if you haven’t already called in to visit, then make sure you do. Pop in and see what they can offer, or to simply say hello. Rae and the team are also able to arrange fi-nance when you purchase a vehicle, as well as breakdown insurance covering one, two or three years, meaning you’re covered should anything happen to your new purchase. To make things even easier, when you deal with the guys at Au-torama, they’ll arrange the delivery of your vehi-cle from anywhere in New Zealand, leaving you to relax and enjoy your vehicle when it arrives. Whether you need a first car or upgrade on your old vehicle, choose Autorama for their reputation, their great selection and value, the high quality customer service you’ll experience and their convenient, easy to find location at 56 Gladstone Road, on the corner of Poutama Street, or you can give them a call on 544 0462 to have a chat about their great range of vehicles. They are open seven days a week, Monday to Friday 8:15am-5pm, Saturday from 9am to 4pm and Sunday from 10:30am to 3pm, so you can call on their services whenever you need them.

New Show Home at 5 Fairose Drive, On the BrightsideWe would like to welcome new residents to Brightwater and our rural districts to attend community meetings of the Brightwater Com-munity Association which are now held on the first Monday of the month at 7.30pm at the Brightwater School staffroom. This month we held our AGM and the officers elected were : Andy McQueen, Chairperson; Pat Lithgow, Deputy Chairperson; Rachael Fi-fita, Treasurer. Do you have a few hours to spare to help out the Brightwater community? We are looking for a community minded person to volunteer to become our Community Association Sec-retary. This position involves taking meeting minutes, attending to correspondence and li-aising with the Tasman District Council. If you could help or require more information about the position, please contact me, Andy McQueen ph 542 4461.

We are currently in discussion with TDC to find a solution to the drainage issues with the carpark behind the shops and the village green, and are hopeful of coming up with a successful solution soon. We have recently received a com-plaint of pedestrians on footpaths around Brightwater being hit by cyclists. This relates to cyclists riding on the Ellis Street footpath. We would like to remind cyclists that it is illegal to ride bikes on footpaths. The late Roy Potter developed a great rambling garden on the banks of the Waiiti River at the Tomlinson Reserve and we have asked that it now be managed by the Reserve Division of the TDC. Also, out of respect for Roy’s hard work, a request has been made to place a plaque on the picnic ta-ble at Waimea West to record and acknowledge his dedication and good deeds. We hope you are all keeping nice

and warm during this winter weather. Andy McQueen Chairperson Brightwater Community Associa-tion

Wednesday Morning Commu-nity Preschool PlaygroupRaising children - It is one of the most important jobs you will do in your life. It has been said that it takes a village to bring children up and this is one of the reasons that we hold a Wednesday morn-ing community play group at the Brightwater Community Angli-can Church crèche building. This playgroup provides a time for children to play with all sorts of toys while parents can informally mix and meet new people. It is place where you can ask questions like, what do you do when …? or just have a pleasant morning talk-ing to other adults. Playgroup be-gins at 10am and runs through to mid day.

David, Page, Hazel and Sarah Stuart enjoy a lovely warm cup of vege-table soup at Pinegrove Kindergarten’s celebration of the Maori New Year and the kindergarten’s 16th birthday, and the blessing of a newly donated piece of land.

Snowden’s BushThis area, one of the few remain-ing treasures of the original bush cover typical of our district was owned by the Snowden family who lived in a cob house behind the bush. The cob house’s replace-ment became the residence of Mr and Mrs Len Gray and is now lived in by their granddaughter, Kylie O’Connell and her family. The Waimea County records of August 1920 show that a remit to a Conference of Local Bodies rec-ommended that Snowden’s Bush be purchased for recreation pur

poses and made into a Scenic Re-serve. In April of 1922, £608-10-0 was raised by public subscription together with a government sub-sidy of £500 which secured the purchase of the reserve for the use of generations to come.In 1939 Brightwater School pupils wrote the following piece describ-ing the reserve. “It is a glorious piece of bush, full of sunlight and shadows taking up about 13 acres. The kowhais attract our native bird, the tui, which throws forth it’s sweet song, day by day.

Music and Rhythm On Monday mornings the Bright-water Community Anglican church hall resounds with upbeat mu-sic and the voices of preschoolers as they enjoy a half hour of music and fun, beginning at 10am. The children sing and do actions to a wide variety of songs while using equipment like the parachutes, rib-bons, and noise making toys. These activities help the children develop gross and fine motor skills, lan-guage, imagination, mathematical and pre-reading skills, as well pro-viding the opportunity for them to socialise with others. After all that hard work it is time for morning tea and a well earned play with the toys. By the time the last one leaves it is getting on towards lunch time and for the younger ones a well de-served nap.

What a BUZZIf you had been at the church hall on Thursday afternoons (from 3:30-4:30pm) you would have been amazed at the number of chil-dren that just kept coming in. In terms two and three children in years 3 to 6 at school, turn up for the Buzz Club @ Brightwater after school club. The kids have a great time playing games and hearing story telling with a Christian back-

ground, before finishing off with a craft activity. There was so much noise and laughter the other day someone popped into the hall just to make sure everything was okay.

Waimea Area QuiltersOur August monthly meeting will be held at Hope School Library on Patons Rd. It is happening on Au-gust 14 from 7.30pm. New mem-bers are always welcome. Phone Marilyn on 541 8435 for more in-formation.

Guiding in the Brightwater AreaSadly, Our Brightwater Guides leader, Josie is leaving us at the end of Term 4 and we will need a new person to lead and inspire this busy, happy bunch of 11 girls. If you think you might be interested in helping please contact Josie so we can get a new leader trained by the end of Term 4. Contact Jo-sie Macdonald on 544 2660 or 021 0255 2383. Term 3 starts for Guides on Wednesday, 23 July at the Scout Den and for Wakefield Pippins and Brownies on Thursday, 24 July at the Village Hall. Sue Burrowes, DC Twin Peaks rural district.

Grief of losing a babyThe loss of a baby is a deeply trau-

matic experience for the mother, father and those close to them, whether it is a result of still birth or miscar-riage. The Brightwater Community Anglican Church is facilitating a remembrance service for people who have lost a child at any stage of pregnancy, at birth or in infancy, whether t occurred last week or decades ago. The ser-vice will give you the opportunity to stand

with other people ‘who know’ the pain of los-ing a child. The service is for women and men who have suffered loss, their children and their extended family and friends, whether the loss is recent or histor-ic. The service will be held at St Pauls Church Hall, 68 Waimea West Rd, Brightwater on Sunday, 27 July at 3pm. Come and rejoice in your baby’s life, grieve and remember.

Snowden’s Bush in Brightwater is home to one of the few remaining lowland totara forests in the Nelson region.

BQD offers customers a fully-transparent build-ing solution with an approach which gives their customers total flexibility throughout their en-tire project. Managing director David Horncastle jointly cre-ated the building management company to offer superior support and service in any home-build project, whether a new home or alteration. “The whole idea of BQD was to give total disclo-sure to customers and give them a better under-standing of building to ensure pitfalls, like non-specified general allocations [PC Sums] were removed. Customers get a total understanding of where their costs are, enabling them to make more-educated decisions, especially in the early stages of projects,” says David.

Unexpected costs, lack of information and con-trol, poor listening and communication, are all factors in a poorly-managed project, and every-thing BQD strives to get right. They have a one-stop-shop approach, and a pro-cess that is continually developed to benefit the customer and provide superior value for money. “We’re very structured in what we do and how we do it,” says David. “Right from the start, at the concept stage, eve-rything is specified, everything is quoted, there’s no PC sums or guesstimates. With every job that we’ve completed, there’s always something that we learn and apply to the next job. We’re always evolving and making the BQD system better and better.”

“At whatever stage people are up to, and even prior to purchasing a section, we can help customers through the process,” says David. Whether your home is still a far away vision in your mind or you have existing house plans, BQD can work with you and assist you with bring your project to life. If you’re starting a build from scratch, BQD will start by working through the client’s spe-cific requirements as well as their budget, to get a design that is specific to them without the restrictions of a standard plan. “We can show customer’s plans of houses we’ve completed but they are the only plans we refer back to, apart from that it really is just starting from scratch and working with customer’s ideas and charac-ter, to produce a design that is uniquely them. It can be as economic, if not more, customising verses choosing from standard plans, and some-

times, with standard plans you have to compro-mise with something on a site that may not nec-essarily work as well as it could. By customising right from the start, everything is designed to suit the client’s project in its entirety, including lifestyle requirements, budget and the site itself. Building is a major investment, therefore, why compromise such an investment with a design that may not offer a true reflection of the owner and not offer the resale value that it should.” Once you have your plan or an existing house design, BQD will price your project through a tender system which can offer great savings or alternatively, deal direct with preferred contrac-tors who have been involved in their show home (as shown in advertisement). Customers also have the flexibility to provide any friends and/or contractor names they would like to give the opportunity to work on their

their project and provide a price for any specific trades. “It’s up to each customer how we price their home and our process enables the customer to do just that” says David. BQD construction management allows customers active involvement in the build of their home or, alternatively, they can be completely hands-off. BQD tailor their ser-vices to meet customers’ requirements. “Everyone is different. They can be as involved as they like or as little as they like. A lot of our cus-tomers would generally like more involvement throughout the construction phase and the flex-ibility of our processes cater for this. We like our customer’s involvement because there are decisions to be made along the way and it’s about ensuring that customers have the ability and the opportunity to make these decisions and not have these made for them.”

The BQD concept has proven itself time and time again in giving clients a comprehensive pricing analysis, total flex-ibility, budget control and complete disclosure through-out the entire process. “It’s a big undertaking to go into a project where you’re dealing with grey areas,” says David. “So it’s removing those grey areas and ensuring that cus-

tomers know exactly what they are getting and what the costs are.” Their clients’ financial security is also important, so there are no building deposits or predetermined lump sum pay-ments. Instead, construction progress payments are due only on work that has been completed and customer’s

money is paid directly to the contractor. “All invoices come through to us, we check them off, make sure that the job has been done and present them to the customer on a month-ly basis for payment.” The last focus of BQD is their 180 day maintenance period, where any maintenance is-sues can be identified and rectified by tradesmen so you finish the process with a complete and perfect home. For more information on how BQD can manage a smooth and efficient build-ing process, whether a new home or alteration, visit their new show home at 26 Sanctuary Drive, Marsden Park, Stoke or phone 539 6444 to talk to their friendly and professional team.

Explore the latest trends in sustainable farming through a science-based approach to a wide range of organic techniques and systems.

Ideal for lifestyle block owners, home gardeners and/or commercial growers, this course will provide key knowledge and skills required for organic growing.

Learn to build ecosystems, promote biodiversity and increase soil and plant health, instead of relying on arti cial fertilisers and poisonous sprays.

Topics covered include organic philosophies, certi cation, soil management, soil food webs, composting, companion planting, crop rotation, green manures, weed control, pest and disease management, plant knowledge and an introduction to permaculture.

This knowledge can be applied not only to food crops, but to the cultivation of any plants – from suburban gardens to pastures, orchards, shelter belts and woodlots.

In addition to attending tutorials and workshops or eld trips, students will need to complete practical and theory assignments in their own time.

Some prior knowledge of horticulture and growing plants is recommended although keen beginners are invited to apply.

Although this programme has a horticultural bias, pastoral farmers wishing to get an understanding of what organic farming is all about will also nd this course of value.

On successful completion you will be awarded a Certi cate in Organic Horticulture (Level 3). Networking between organic growing enthusiasts is an added bonus to joining this course.

Note: Minimum numbers required for course to commence.

HUGE range of 2nd hand ATV stock in store now

Over the last few weeks or so the weather has hampered getting out fishing with few reports coming in, so I thought it might be a good chance to remind everyone of some basic safety precautions and how to develop your own critical checklist before heading out boating.Whenever you are going out on the water, make sure people are aware of where you are going and, more importantly, when you intend to be back. That way, friends and family won’t get unnecessarily worried and con-tact authorities causing in some cases, expensive and time consum-ing searches to be mounted. It pays to prepare a Two Minute form that has the details of your vessel, where you are going boating and when you are returning. Give it to someone who can contact the authorities if you don’t return by your scheduled time then someone can contact the Coastguard.Make sure you wear the appropri-ate clothing when going boating. Always wear a lifejacket when you go boating and always wear cloth-ing that is appropriate for the con-ditions. A rule of thumb is that you should go for several layers of thinner clothing rather than one thick layer (thinner, multi layers trap air and retains heat better). You can always remove a layer if you get too warm. When going boating you must carry some form of communica-tion device in case you get into difficulty. It is important when go-ing boating that you carry at least two forms of communication. You never know when you might need to contact someone in a hurry. By far the best form of communication is a marine VHF radio. When you

use a VHF radio it can be picked up by a range of different people at once, whereas a cellphone will only be picked up by one person. If you have a cellphone, then make sure that it is in a waterproof plastic bag. You should also carry flares in a wa-terproof canister to make it easier for people to find you. When going boating, it’s always a good idea to make sure your crew knows where all the safety equip-ment is and what they should do in case of an emergency. Check the weather forecast and if in doubt don’t go out. Also, a really good idea is to devel-op a pre-launch checklist for your boat. It’s easy to forget or miss things when you go boating. You get caught up in the excitement of a day out on the water. There are lots of things you need to remember – such as ensuring you have enough food for the day, selecting the right sort of bait and making sure you know the route to get to where you’re going. Why not develop a checklist of the critical things that you need to do before the boat goes in the water? Do you have enough fuel? Is there a lifejacket on board for every person on the boat? Do you have at least two forms of communications on board, such as a VHF radio, a ful-ly-charged mobile phone or flares? Have you inserted the bungs?Get your checklist printed and lam-inated, then stick it to your dash-board where you can’t avoid seeing it. Before you launch, satisfy your-self that you’ve completed all the checks. This will result in a safe and pleas-ant day’s boating with no hidden surprises.

Everyone has a voice inside them and Alice Robin just wants to bring them out. Her history with choral music has seen her lead and organise a number of choir groups and festivals in England, but after her move to New Zealand she formed a successful evening community choir which draws around 60 singers regularly to The Boathouse in Nelson. Now Alice is starting a new sis-ter community choir in Hope. “If you sing at the end of the day you might be a bit tired after work, but in the morning, if you know that’s what you going do it’s fantastic. In England I had two choirs and they were both wonderful, but people were al-ways there at the day one,” says Alice. The choir will be gathering in the youth hall at Hope commu-nity and everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the magic of creating music in a group. Al-ice encourages anyone who is even slightly interested to come along and give it a go. “You get a

great connection when you sing with other people, you get sur-rounded by all their voices and all the sound, the resonance and the vibration and it’s really powerful,” she says. “There’s no judgement about your voice in this choir and every voice has a part to play. Over time we de-velop ways of making our voic-es blend together, but no one will ever be criticised for their voice, as a group we’ll make the best sound we can.”

The new community choir starts on July 25 and will meet weekly on Friday mornings 10am to 12 noon in the Youth Hall at Hope Community Church, Ranzau Rd. Their repertoire of songs rang-es from pop, soul and gospel to folk and funk, with ethnic songs from around the world as well as the occasional classical piece, so for more information call Alice on 553 0448 or email [email protected]

A Gareth Palmer penalty was all that separated the two teams, as Wanderers sealed the Car Compa-ny division two rugby champion-ship in extra-time.In front of thousands of spectators at Trafalgar Park, Taylor’s Con-tracting Wanderers gave coach Aaron Everitt and captain Callum Rogers the perfect send-off, win-ning the final 20-17 against rivals Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys, and ensuring they end the season with a perfect 12-from-12 record.Wanderers had led 12-0 at half time before Waimea made a valiant comeback in the second half, tying the game 17-17 after 80 minutes.Callum, who will move to Queen-stown after 17 years with the club, was thrilled with his team’s ef-

forts all season after they finished back in eighth last year. “We’ve really worked hard and come back to the number one spot. The lads have done really well,” he says. “We’ve had quite a lot of young blood come through and we’ve had a new lease of life, I think. Callum says they were pretty con-fident heading into the game with the knowledge that they had done the job against Waimea previ-ously this season, but they knew their perfect round robin would’ve counted for nought had they lost the final. “There was quite a lot of finger-nail biting there in the last couple of minutes but the boys re-ally dug in, even though they were hurting. It was definitely the hard-est game we’ve played all year.”

The celebrations continued well into the weekend after Waimea Old Boys claimed their second rugby championship in a row. They hadn’t beaten Taylor’s Contract-ing Wanderers in their two previous attempts this season, but Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys won when it really mattered, sealing a 41-12 victory in front of thousands of spectators at a sunny Trafalgar Park.Captain Ben Coman says the win was

pretty special for the club and heaped praise on the coaches for the work they’ve done throughout the season. “They’ve kept us pretty grounded throughout the whole year, and they’re pretty honest and know how to get the best out of us, and I think that gave us an edge in the end,” he says. Waimea Old Boys were virtually at full strength for the game — the only key absentee being Chiefs’ wing James Lowe, who captained the team last year. And it

was some of the big name players who stood up in the final, with man of the match Kaide Whiting scoring twice, while first five Marty Banks ripped through the Wanderers backline all af-ternoon and Billy Guyton kept the points ticking over — he ended the game with seven successful shots on goal. In the for-wards, players like Peter Samu, Jeff Lepa and Dale Russ made their physical pres-ence felt.Ben says there was a maturity in the

group now, and there was plenty of depth on the bench — two key facets to their squad. Co-coach Mark Milne was really rapt with the perfor-mance. “We knew they’d come back after last year but we’re rapt with how we played, we were pretty clini-cal in the end,” he says.President Duane Whiting wanted to congratulate all the Waimea teams for getting into the finals, with a special mention to the division one side for going back-to-back. He also thanks the sponsors and fans for their support.

Taylor’s Contracting Wander-ers captain Jesse Pitman says it’s always disappointing to lose a final, but Saturday’s re-sult wasn’t through a lack of effort. “I’m extremely proud of the team and it’s just good to make another final. We didn’t get over the line but you’ve got to be in it to win it,” he says.Jesse says the team was “rocked” during the week when it was confirmed his brother Trael Joass would miss the final, and be sidelined for the rest of the year, due to an issue with his heart. “He’s been bloody good for us and he gives us that direct running, and we just missed that today. He would’ve gone close to making the Makos this year and he’s pretty important to our team, he was really missed.”And although Wanderers spoke of a “three year plan” in their return to the Car Compa-ny division one in 2012, Jesse

still believes his young squad is on the right track to winning their first championship since 1955. “I think we’ve got four or five guys over 25 years old so we’ll keep coming, and be-

cause we haven’t won yet we’ll still be hungry. We’re still chas-ing it, we’ll be back next year and we’ll be back in the final but hopefully we can go one better.”

Waimea want off the bottomThe Waimea College first XV has won just their second game of the Press Cup season, and it’s come at an important time as the team look to get off the bottom of the table.Waimea College’s 14-5 win over Lincoln High School keeps them in 15th place, but with two matches left to play coach Daniel Hobbs was hopeful they could finish at least one spot higher. “I said last month that we just wanted to get some pride and enjoyment back, and on the weekend we definitely got some enjoyment back, and we need to make sure we’re better again this weekend,” he says.Waimea College will travel to ninth-placed Ashburton College on Saturday, which will be the team’s best shot at another win, as they have Nelson College in the final round. St Thomas College of Canterbury are the team above Waimea, but only on points differential.

Fustal reps win national titleNelson’s 12th grade futsal team are national champions.Nelson Bays Football sent three age-group sides to the tourna-ment in Wellington, where the 12th grade side finished on top. The 14th grade side lost to the eventual winners in the semi-finals and the 16th grade side missed out on a spot in the final on goal difference only, after finishing second equal

after pool play. NBF general man-ager Clive Beaumont says he was thrilled with the success and says it’s especially remarkable consider-ing Nelson doesn’t even have a jun-ior futsal league. “These boys got together for four weeks of training and were playing against teams that play week in, week out.”Futsal is a five-a-side game played on a small indoor court.

Resource Consents

Submissions called for on reserve land proposalTasman District Council is calling for submissions under the Reserves Act 1977, on its intention to declare a small area of freehold land at Mapua a Local Purpose (Walkway) Reserve. The Council is the owner of an existing Local Purpose Reserve at Aranui Road. This land is Lot 28 DP 17242 (3020m2), and is a walkway which runs between Aranui Road and the sea. When land adjacent to this Reserve was subdivided, a small area of land was offered to the Council as an addition to the Reserve. Due to technicalities in the subdivision process, the land was vested in the Council as freehold land. This land is Lot 1 DP 472570 (184m2). It is not a Reserve at this time, but Section 14 of the Reserves Act allows the Council to declare it to be Reserve, unless objections are sustained following public notification. If the freehold land becomes a Reserve, it will still be subject to all existing encumbrances on the title (easements and building covenants). The proposal is to amalgamate the titles of Lot 28 DP 17242 and Lot 1 DP 472570 when they are both Local Purpose (Walkway) Reserves. The proposal should have no impact on the physical use of either land parcel. Users of the walkway will not notice any difference if Lot 1 DP 472570 is made a Reserve and amalgamated with the adjacent existing Reserve. It is an administrative tidy up to allow land with the same physical use to be held in the same land title, with the same Reserve status.Plans of the existing Reserve and proposed addition to that Reserve can obtained by contacting Robert Cant on Ph. 03 543 8400, or via Email: [email protected]. Copies of this notice, plus plans will also be available on the Council’s website.Written submissions or objections should be sent to: Tasman District Council Private Bag 4 Richmond 7050Submissions or objections will be received up to 4.00 pm on 20 August 2014. Please state whether you would like to speak to your submission in the event that a hearing is required.

Tasman District Council Community Grants Close 31 August Applications are now open for Tasman District Council’s Community Grants.Tasman District Council allocates grants to organisations that run activities in line with the Council’s community outcomes. Grants are one-offs and are made to organisations whose services and projects provide community-wide benefit.Applications can be submitted online at www.tasman.govt.nz or via hardcopy application forms available from Council Service Centres and Libraries. Applications close 31 August 2014.
