the factions – one led by Mr Gar-dener and the other by Mr Male.”He went on to say Grey Power has been built by its volunteers and it’s “deplorable that the good work in the area is being under-mined, and volunteer and staff reputations are being affected”.By the end of last month, Mac says the federation was notified by Nelson Grey Power secre-

tary that Neville’s Grey Power membership had been cancelled following a formal complaints hearing at which four of the five complaints were upheld.“Following this, Mr Male’s con-tact details have been removed from the Grey Power Federation database. “As a further consequence, the executive committee has recom-mended to the full board meeting in Auckland today [Tuesday] that

Mr Male cease and desist from claiming any affiliation to Grey Power.”Earlier, the bat-tle for control of Grey Power liter-ally turned into a struggle when the group back-ing Neville Male turned up on Sat-urday morning with a locksmith to change the

locks. Office manager Pat Carrick was heading to the office to do some work and quickly let herself in and locked the Male sup-porters out. When another supporter

of the anti-Neville faction turned up she opened the door to let him in and the others forced their way

in, leaving the matter as a stale-mate.The police were called and they took the keys off both parties and gave them to the landlord until

they could prove who the rightful tenant is.The mess between Neville Male and the executive committee, who voted no confidence in him and later expelled him from the membership, began last year when a restructure was opposed

by the office manager and many of the organisation’s volunteers.Neville says he is still the presi-dent of the organisation as the attempt to kick him out was un-constitutional.He has appointed new committee members to replace those in the other group. But with the backing of the na-tional federation, it appears the anti-Male faction have won their fight to lead the group, which has around 9000 members in Nelson.Kevin Gardener didn’t want to comment on the situation, other than to say Grey Power will hold an AGM in April to elect a new executive committee and presi-dent.

“[it’s] deplorable that thegood work in the area is

being undermined”- Mac Welch.

Former Henley School principal, Chris Ryan, who passed away last week, made a big impression on thousands of students during more than 40 years in education. We asked

people on Queen St if they could remember their favourite teacher.

Shelley Hawke, Richmond.

“I had Mrs Buutveld at Rich-mond School and she really knew how to get the best out of everyone.”

Marty Price, Richmond.

“I’ll always remember Mrs McWhinney, my French teacher back in Cork. She was very, very patient.”

Jo Chapple, Mahana.

“John Stead was my science teacher back at Kaiapoi High and he was very down to earth. He treated us like adults which was nice.”

Bill Albert, Richmond.

“I had a principal in Palm-erston North, Arthur Dennis. He was very understanding and knew a lot of what was go-ing on in the community and everyone’s families.”

Chris Ryan was a devoted fa-ther, grandfather and uncle and “an inclusive and encour-aging colleague” and an “amaz-ing teacher and principal” who had a quirky taste in ties and a great sense of humour. The long-serving Henley School principal, who died, aged 70, after a short illness on February 13, was farewelled by family, friends and colleagues at Hope Gardens of Remem-brance and crematorium last Wednesday. It was an emotional farewell to a much-loved educator who touched so many lives during a teaching career that started at Dunedin Teachers College in 1963 and ended when he re-tired after 18 years as principal of Henley School in 2008. In between, Chris was a teach-er in Dipton, Taumaranui, London, Cheviot and Nelson where he taught at Waimea In-termediate and Victory School and was deputy principal at Richmond School and princi-pal at Appleby and Auckland Point before moving to HenleyFriend and colleague, Cleve Shearer who is principal of Waimea Intermediate, paid tribute to Chris saying “his contribution to our industry, his fellow principals and staff

and especially students has been significant”.“So many things about Chris illustrated his character, espe-cially the way he worked with people - colleagues, families and children. He was so kind, fair, caring and generous in everything he did.”Cleve read an email he re-ceived last week from two for-mer Henley students, Jenny Thompson and Ciara Deeley, that illustrated the long-last-ing impact Chris had on his students. The email read, “Mr Ryan was an incredible prin-cipal who made an impact on both our lives. We were truly lucky to have such a loving, caring and influential man looking over us during our pri-mary school years.”Chris was an honorary mem-ber of the New Zealand Edu-cational Institute after being a counsellor for many years. Long-serving Henley teacher Kathy Ferguson paid tribute

to Chris saying he was “so sup-portive and always knew what to say”. Kathy says Chris will also be remembered for his wonder-ful sense of humour and big collection of colour ties which he joked he wore “because the children love them and my wife can’t stand them.”Cleve recalled that Henley’s senior syndicate students “re-named the Christmas holidays the We’ll Miss Chris Holidays when Chris retired at the end of 2008”.“And we will all miss Chris.” Chris is survived by his wife Maureen, a former teacher at a number of Nelson primary schools and a well-known art-ist and his children, Jamie, a surgeon in Dunedin, Brigid, a specialist needs teacher in the Nelson region, Halliday, an architectural technologist of Dunedin, and Ben, an inventor and entrepreneur who is based in Auckland

Golden Bay Kayak’s Tony Bateup and Lisa Savage had a whale of time when they went out for a paddle off Pohara Beach last Wednesday, enjoying a close encounter with a pod of around “20 or 30” Orca.Tony says Lisa sighted the Orca at Taupo Point and they swam alongside their surf skis as they headed towards Tata Beach. Although Tony says he has paddled with Orca before, he has never seen so many or got so close as the Orca cruised alongside, swimming in the surf ski’s bow wake.“It was hard to tell exact numbers because they were coming up all over the place but there had to be at least 20 or 30,” Tony says. “They came around and stayed for ages too - they’d disappear and you’d think

they had gone, and then they would come up again.“One of them swam right alongside the surf ski and rolled on its side and eyeballed me. There were two really big guys - I reckon one of them had a dorsal that was five feet high.”Department of Conservation ranger, Mike Ogle, says seeing a pod of orca this large is quite significant, as generally pods in the area

contain around six whales. He says the orca feed off the stingrays and an increase in stingrays is likely the cause for the high number of orca sightings this time of year.“They seem to come through, hang around for a while and move on.”He encourages people to enjoy the mammals and be amazed, but advises that there are some regulations around marine mammals.

This is mainly due to boat noise irritating the animals.Vessels are not permitted within 50m of a marine mammal, and if there are more than three vessels you must stay 300m away. Swimming is not permitted within 100m. “Obviously it can’t be helped if they just pop up right beside a boat, but people should not follow or harass the animals.”Mark says there are only 150-200 whales in New Zealand so Tony and Lisa could have seen a good ten per cent of them. The photos of Tony and Lisa and the Orca were taken from Pohara Beachfront Motel by Tom Cooper, while a rather shaky video filmed by Tom on his cell phone can be viewed on www.waimeaweekly.co.nz

SCHOOL FIESTA: Mahana School is holding its Twilight Food and Music Fiesta at the school grounds on Saturday March 7 from 3pm to 7pm. The fiesta will feature homemade food, drinks and live music from Taylor Pumphrey, Georgia Chapple, Mitchell Neal, Kieran O’Connor from Oh Blok and Medicine Woman. There will also be a silent auction, raffles and entertainment for the children. Entry is a gold coin. The school will be signposted from Dominion Rd.

CHILDREN’S DAY: The Tasman District Coun-cil is helping to celebrate Children’s Day this Sun-day when it will hold its Choice Children’s Day at Conifer Park at Rabbit Island from 2pm to 4pm. There will be free activities for the whole family including bouncy castles, balloon twisting, face painting, pony cart rides, a cookie decoration workshop, colouring-in competition and treasure hunt. The Get Moving Family Fun Ride team will be setting up bike courses and there will be a bike mechanic available to give bikes a quick check over for roadworthiness.

The Nelson-Tasman Cycle Trails Trust will this Thursday ask the Tasman Dis-trict Council to accept a funding pro-posal that will allow work to start on the construction of Tasman’s Great Taste Trail between Wakefield and Spooner’s Tunnel. The trust has indicated it can

provide a combination of cash and in-kind payments to council that would meet council’s requirements of match-ing funds for the $300,000 it has allo-cated for the trail in this year’s budget. Council will only spend the $300,000 if it receives matching funds from either

central government or another third party. The value of this matching fund is yet to be confirmed by the trust al-though it wants council to agree to the proposal in principle so it can proceed with finalising the funds and in-kind payments.

Nelson could be on the verge of a world first, by eradicating the great white butterfly from the region. The project to eradicate the great white butterfly has been run by the Department of Conserva-tion since 2013 in conjunction with a number of agencies, including both councils. The project has relied heavily on members of the public to inform them of sightings of eggs, caterpillars and butterflies. As a result, there has been just one sighting in the Top of the South since the start of December.Project manager Mike Shepherd says the big push now is to make sure the butterflies are completely eradicated. If that’s the case, it will be the first time the but-terflies have been successfully eradicated from any region in the world.“Most countries in Europe and Asia, where there’s a lot of these butterflies, have land bor-ders, so they can’t try to eradicate these kind of pests. But because we’re quite isolated, we can.”The butterflies cause massive damage to native plants and brassica vegetables and would have had a huge effect on the region’s market garden industry, as well as dairy, beef and sheep farm-ing. The butterfly was restricted to Nelson but would have spread if not contained when it was.In November 2013, 227 great white butterfly were found in Nelson, compared with just 12 in November 2014. In December 2013, there were 220 detections compared to just one in Decem-ber 2014.Martin says the current phase of the programme “Help us get to zero” is a public campaign urg-ing people to hunt down any remaining eggs, caterpillars or butterfly.Autumn is the time of year the butterflies emerge after remaining dormant in summer.DOC is urging people to contact them on 0800 800 99 66 if they see any signs of the butterfly, its eggs or caterpillars.

A revolutionary tree-harvesting machine, that has been developed and manufactured in Nelson, is at-tracting attention from overseas buyers, with one of the $1.2million machines being exported to Cana-da this week. The project was initiated by Kelly Logging’s owner Nigel Kelly al-most 10 years ago, after he was concerned that the existing prac-tise of using logging crews to fell and harvest trees on steep slopes was too risky. So Nigel got a team of Nelson designers and manufac-turers together to build a machine that could harvest trees safely and efficiently on slopes of up to 45 de-grees. And this week, the fifth aptly named ClimbMAX rolled off the production line and was exported to Canada where it will be used to harvest trees on Vancouver Island. Kelly Logging is already using two ClimbMAX machines in forests around Nelson and Marlborough, JB Logging is operating one in Napier, while a fourth is operating in British Columbia. “I could see that forestry crews were working in a high risk area on steep slopes, so I wanted to make it safer,” Nigel says. “ClimbMAX eliminates almost all manual tree-felling and breaking-

out, and makes harvesting on steep slopes safer and faster.”Nigel says designing and building ClimbMAX was a collaboration between four Nelson companies. Kelly Logging initiated the project, Trinder Engineering modified the base machine to become a purpose-built, winch-assisted tree harvester, Fluid Power Solutions designed the self-regulating hydraulic systems and Rzoska Electrical developed the controlling software system.“It’s a real Nelson project and eve-ryone has worked very hard to make it happen,” says Nigel.Kerry says it takes about seven months to build one of the ma-chines, which starts off as a stand-ard 33 tonne Hitachi excavator. “There’s not too much left of the original machine by the time we’ve finished,” Kerry says. “We change the cab, the boom and arm, and have to integrate all the winch sys-tem and a blade into a new under-carriage - there’s nothing else like it anywhere in the world.”Although ClimbMAX is being used successfully in New Zealand, Nigel predicts the big demand will come from Canada and the US where it is perfectly suited to their logging operations.

Brightwater School students are going to be getting on their bikes this term heading out on the Tasman Great Taste Trail to get fit and learn cycle safety. The cycle trail runs right past the school and principal Gerald Baldwin says they decided to make use of it by taking a group of students cycling every Wednesday. The programme started last Wednesday when 26 students, one teacher and two parents cycled 13km towards Wakefield and back.“It’s going to be a physical and educational exercise,” Gerald says. “They’ll be out getting some exercise as well as learning cycle safety on the trail away from cars.“We are also looking at incorporating some sort of curriculum related studies they can do when they are out biking. We could even cycle to Wakefield and Ranzau to join those schools in some sort of activities.”However, the students on the first ride last Wednesday already had their first educational exercise receiving an unplanned David Atten-borough-style nature lesson.“They saw a cat carrying a dead rabbit across the trail, a hedgehog eating plums and a ram doing his job in a paddock. It was quite an in-teresting ride for them,” Gerald says.Gerald says the school is also planning to build a 500m long cycle track through its grounds so they can teach the younger students cycle safety in a super-safe environment. He says the proceeds from the school gala which is be-ing held on March 15 will be used to fund the project.

As Anzac Day approaches, the focus will be on those men who fought in World War One, but plenty of women also did more than their share for the cause and many of them were Nelson-trained nurses.Despite the eagerness of New Zealand nurses to serve in World War One, initially they were not supported by the government, with the New Zealand Crown Law office stating that war was not a place for women.Meanwhile, the Australian gov-ernment asked for 12 nurses to join the Australian Army Nursing Services who were soon to depart for Egypt-they left New Zealand on April 1, 1915. Nelson’s Ethel Dement was one of the 12 nurses who arrived in France on April 6, 1916, and she was placed in a British hospital. An excerpt from a letter Ethel

wrote from a British hospital “somewhere in France” said:“Tommy is so fine, so cheery in his privations, with the quaint-est sayings and antics, and if you could only see them here after having faced death so often you would see another phase of the human, a phase which is new to us who have never faced war be-fore”.Finally the New Zealand govern-ment relented and on April 6, 1915, 110 nurses were officially enlisted in the New Zealand Army Nursing Service. During the course of the war, 39 nurses who either trained, were born, or lived in our region, joined the service. Some nurses were placed in casu-alty wards in England and others in dressing and casualty clearing stations, where the more serious-ly injured were attended to before being moved to a mobile hospi-tal or shipped back to England

for major trauma treatment. In some instances, patients arrived straight from the front, with un-cleaned wounds and covered in mud. Nurses worked long hours under very trying conditions and days off were few. Sickness was also a problem with several Nelson

nurses experiencing in-fluenza, exhaustion, mea-sles and tonsillitis. Gertrude Barker trained as a nurse at Nelson Hos-pital before embarking onboard troop ship SS Athenic on December 31, 1917, bound for the mili-tary hospital at Walton on Thames in England.

She grew up on the family farm at Stanley Brook, Tasman, and always wanted to be a nurse but her father didn’t believe she was intelligent enough to qualify, so she was sent to live with her aunts in Nelson and worked as a dress maker. Gertrude wanted to prove her fa-ther wrong and, at the age of 21, enrolled in the nursing course at Nelson Hospital, graduating with honours in 1916. At the time of enlisting in the New Zealand Army Nursing Service she gave her address as Te Rangi Private Hospital, Collingwood St, Nel-son.Her great niece, Janice Brown from Aniseed Valley, recorded Gertrude’s life and recalls her family telling her that while Ger-trude stood on the verandah at the hospital, she could hear the guns firing in France and knew that the next train would bring another load of casualties. Like many of the nurses during this time, she suffered from in-fluenza and was admitted to the General Hospital at Walton on Thames. She left England in Sep-tember 1919 to travel home and was with the New Zealand Army Service for two years before being discharged on October 1, 1919. Gertrude returned home to Nel-son a physical wreck, due to the

stresses of casualty nursing and the gruelling voyage home. She was a changed woman and a con-firmed pacifist, having seen the devastation of war.She purchased a small house on the Ridgeway in Stoke, where she lived with her sisters. When the Spanish influenza epidemic ar-rived in Nelson in 1919, she was called in to help nurse Nelson College boys at the infirmary. It was there she met her husband Eric Watkin, a teacher at the col-lege. They married, had two chil-dren, and lived in Stoke until her husband secured a teaching posi-tion at the Wanganui Technical College in 1930, where she lived until her death in 1956.Gertrude was awarded a Brit-ish War Medal for her service in 1921. Servicewomen were wel-comed back home and awarded extra decorations, such as the Royal Red Cross. However, whereas some of their fellow ser-vicemen were given loans and farm land, there was nothing like that for the women who served. In all, 550 nurses served with the New Zealand Army Service over-seas during WWI.If you would like further infor-mation on nurses and chaplains who served in WWI, please con-tact Cheryl Carnahan at the Nel-son Genealogy Library.

The McGlashen family’s photo al-bum is expanding by the day to in-clude X-rays of broken bones with both father and son cast in plaster from separate injuries. In mid-January, two-year-old Connor, was happily playing on a waterslide at a neighbour’s house when he fell, twisting his leg and breaking his femur. His mother, Chanel, received a phone call from the neighbour saying it was prob-ably best to come home from work, as her son had taken a fall. He was cast in plaster from his chest to his toes on one side and was bedridden for the first two weeks after the accident. It has tak-en five weeks for Connor to be able to move around again even though he is still in plaster.Just as Connor was on the improve, his father, Richmond pharmacist, Andrew fell off his dirt bike while riding through forestry trails last week and broke a bone in his hand. He continued to ride after his fall, until the adrenaline wore off and the pain started to increase. Chanel now has two patients at home and DVDs have played an important part in the recovery process. That is why the family has decided to donate two DVD players to Nel-

son Hospital for children and their families to use. “Time can go so slowly in hospital, it meant so much to us for Connor to be able to take his mind off what has happened and watch a DVD,” says Andrew.Just when they thought there would be no more broken bones, one of Andrew’s staff, Rhonda, phoned to advise she had broken three bones in her foot. He says that his pharmacy now looks like a warzone with staff hob-bling around.

Omega-3 made easy Nordic Naturals ‘Children’s DHA’ is an easy and great tasting way to ensure your children receive their adequate intake of the important omega-3 fatty acid DHA (Docosahexaenoic Acid). This omega-3 is also found in some foods (especially oily fish), however it can be difficult to get enough through diet alone. DHA has many important functions in the developing body, most notably for optimum brain and eye health. Personally, I recommend Nordic Naturals ‘Children’s DHA’ as a premium quality source of DHA. A ‘Just Metal’ music concert will be held at The Theatre Royal, next weekend which will feature local college bands including one from Waimea College. The all age’s event has been organised by Danny Freilich, Manager of local metal band ‘Legacy of Disorder’. He wanted to give local young bands an opportunity to gain professional live performance experience, as well as providing a safe and affordable event for teenagers to attend.‘Legacy of Disorder’, who have re-corded and toured in the USA, will

headline the concert with support-ing bands from Waimea College, Garin College, Nayland College, Nelson College and Motueka High School.Waimea College students Siobhan Lavery, Matt Hammond, Ralph Pax-ton and Liam Golding, of blended thrash punk and metal band ‘Toxic Vain’, have been rehearsing during school lunch breaks and weekends for the gig. They came together over two years ago having grown up with metal influences such as Black Sab-bath, Metallica and Megadeath.

The band who writes their own songs, won the Lowdown Best Song Award at last year’s Rockquest and say they are looking forward to play-ing a 22minute set of their original material. “It is a great opportunity to get out there, play live and have fun with the other artists,” says band member Ralph. The ‘Just Metal’ concert, sponsored by Legacy of Disorder, Danny Freil-ich, NBS and Beggs Music Works, will be held at the Theatre Royal this Saturday. Tickets are $10 and avail-able through the schools involved.

Donated bras for islands:Well this might not be big news for some, but for some of the women

of Vanuatu, this is big. Donations of bras has climbed from the reported 250 to 542 and will be distributed to the Ni Vanuatu women who are currently working in the Nelson Bays region under the RSE scheme. With the help of Lea from Captivation Lin-

gerie store in Richmond, the Uplift Project in Christchurch and Alison Moore from Puncdot, a pictorial image is being pro-duced with instructions in Bislama (one of the main languages in Vanuatu) on the correct fitting of a bra.Alongside the 542 bras, an estimated 1 cubic metre of sheets, towels, pillowcases and lightweight duvet covers have been

donated, and have now all been distribut-ed to the workers in both the Nelson Bays and Marlborough regions for them to take home to their villages. All of this after an article in Waimea Weekly.I would like to thank the generosity of Nel-sonians who have donated to these two projects. Belinda Roselli.

Stonehurst Farm and The Nelson ARK invite you to join them for their annual open day on Sunday, March 1. Since joining forces, the two groups have been operat-ing in harmony to provide a supportive and safe envi-ronment for those working with both dogs and horses. Their open day is a chance for people to share in the wonderful work they do and learn more about how they

can become a part of it. Originally a riding school and trekking business, Stonehurst has successfully re-invented itself, of-fering horse owners excellent facilities for riding and grazing their animals. Owners Laurence and Suzanne Max are passionate about horses, and their full working farm includes 50 hectares of managed grazing as well as a wide variety of farm trails, including access to 250 hectares of neighbouring farmland and a five kilometre river boundary. Grazing services include hay fed twice daily all year round, saved grass strip fed as required, fences, water and well maintained pastures, twice daily check on horses, individual feeding programmes if required, float hire, ani-mal health and hoof care provided as required, top instructors available for lessons, and clin-ics held on site for those looking to learn more about equine topics. The fantastic grazing opportunities are enhanced by Stonehurst Farms facilities, which make it the perfect place for casual hire to individuals or groups from any discipline. The riding centre is open seven days a week with a casual rate of just $10 an hour per horse, or their special rate means you have unlimited use of the grounds for $60 a month. The farm encompasses three all-weather floodlit arenas. They also offer a new all-purpose 65 metre by 35 metre arena of screened topsoil, use of the yards, holding and grazing paddocks, parking, float access and extensive farm rid-

ing. Their new riding arena has been a major investment for the farm that is already reeling in positive reviews. “It’s a good surface. Good grip, secure footing but good cushioning, it would be suitable for any equine discipline,” says well-known local horse trainer, Justin Cooney. “It’s a really safe environment for peo-ple to ride in and there’s always help and support on hand. We’ve got horse grazing as well as facility hire. It’s open

for anyone who wants to bring their horses, anyone that wants to hold a clinic, pony clubs or any riding clubs that want to hold an event, we’ve got everything - picnic facilities, shade, kitchen, pens, toilets, and parking,” says Suzanne. The Nelson ARK has also recognised the unique set up of Stonehurst Farm, and is proud to base its charitable organisation there too. “Our focus is on working with young people

Karen Howieson with ARK dog Koru, Suzanne and Laurence Max, and horse Dodge.

who have lost their way and need some help with building skills and their self esteem, and we place them alongside dogs that are not immediately re-homeable,” says The Nelson ARK’s community co-ordinator, Karen Howieson. “We run a programme, which is an eight week intensive p r o g r a m m e , where they are responsible for retraining a dog. The dog training c o m p o n e n t teaches those young people respect, responsibility, problem solving and discipline, and then we have a second component called ‘healing species’, which is a compassion education violence-intervention programme and that is to help young people learn to deal with difficult situations and to hold on to their power.” There are a number of benefits that have come from working closely together and both groups receive a lot of support from the other. “We share certain facilities and that kind of reduces the overheads, but we also do an equine session and going forward we will look at an equine pro-gramme, based on the APART (Animals People And Rehabilitative training) pro-gramme. Laurence and Suzanne are sup-

portive of what we do and vice versa, and a number of the people who have horses here come and volunteer for the ARK, so it all works; it’s actually quite a community that we have here and so relationships and

communication are all very important,” says Karen. “Without volunteers the ARK wouldn’t be able to operate, and it’s also important for people to know who we are and where we are,” says Karen. “We’re always des-perate for foster families who are willing to look after the dogs for the duration of the programme, the ARK pays for all ex-penses, but we always need new families because many of them fall in love with the dogs and end up adopting them.” There’s a whole range of volunteer work available, depending on people’s skills, from the dog advisory group, fundraising committee, and youth advisory group to volunteers for stalls at events, cleaning and accounts. Through the APART programme, The

Nelson ARK also supports people who are interested in working with young peo-ple, with training and support to complete their level 3 youth work certificate. The Nelson ARK will have its offices open

during the open day for any people look-ing to learn more about supporting the group, while Stone-hurst Farm is free to be explored, with Laurence and Su-zanne on hand for any enquiries about facility hire or graz-ing. The annual open

day will include a number of other ac-tivities including pony rides, horse and cart rides, a bouncy castle, horse and dog demonstrations, second-hand horse gear for sale, ice cream, a sausage sizzle and coffee. The day will run from 10am until 2pm, so come down and see this fantastic set-up for your-self. Stonehurst Farm and The Nelson ARK are situated at 165 Haycock Road in Hope.

By Chris Janetzki

On February 18, Ash Wednesday, the church year moved from the season of Epiphany, to the season of Lent. Lent is a season of the church year that goes for about six weeks - until Holy Sat-urday - and is used as a time of preparation for the Easter celebration to come. Traditionally, Christians around the world prepare through times of prayer, a focus on moving away from behaviours that hurt ourselves or others, and giving up items in our lives - specific foods, entertainment devices etc.

I personally like to try different things to simply coffee and chocolate. I once an-nounced to my lecturers at seminary that I would be giving up study for Lent. They were impressed by my willingness to give something up and to use this as a greater time of preparation. However, my lecturers informed me they wouldn’t be giving up grading during Lent. As a Christian, I personally struggle with the concept of Lent. The ultimate sacrifice of Christ, and his resurrection are a cause of great celebration for God’s people. No longer does sin, death and the devil have power over us, but we are called into

salvation with our God. As Paul says to the believers in Thessa-lonica, ‘Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.’ (1 Thes-salonians 16-18). So why do we still encourage Lenten ob-servances. There still is value for us in set-ting aside a special time to focus on God. Firstly, it makes us aware of how much we depend on earthly things, more so than God.Secondly, it reminds us of our hunger, or neediness for God.Thirdly, it helps us to set aside earthly idols

for our Heavenly Father. Using the time of Lent to prepare for the season of Easter won’t cause God to bless us anymore, but it does allow us to grow in our life of blessing from God. Loving Father, you call us to allow your Spirit to move in our lives. Allow us to take time to focus on your and to goodness you provide for us. Amen. May God draw you closer to him this Lenten Season.

Chris Janetzki is the senior pastor at St Paul’s Lutheran Community Church in Up-per Moutere.

Nelson’s young professionals have had a busy start to the new year, both in the office and out of it.Nelson Young Professionals host a range of events each year and 2015 has already been busy with a mini-seminar been and gone, and the popular BBQ in the Vines being held this Friday, February 27.President Michelle Byczkow says the BBQ in the Vines is the most popular event on the group’s calendar, after the spring ball. It gives people in the first 15 years of their career the opportunity to spend an evening drinking wine and eating great food with like-minded people, at Kaimira Estate in Brightwater. The double-decker bus will pick 50 BBQ-goers up from Nelson city, Stoke and Richmond be-fore getting to Kaimira, where a barbeque and wine will keep people fully entertained. Michelle says it’s such a fun day and they’ve al-ready had strong interest from members, but are keen for non-members to come along as well. For ticket information email [email protected] or head to the group’s Facebook page.

LAKE ROTOITI NELSON LAKES REGATTA

th Feb & 1

st March

The Acceleration on Water Festival of Speed Tour continues this weekend with a two day regatta of full-on racing. The Lake Ro-toiti Power Boat Club is proud to host the Lake Rotoiti Nelson Lakes Regatta, the third round of a five series national competition. The annual event is continually growing and watersport event manager from Accelera-tion on Water, Denise Preece, says numbers of those coming to watch last year’s regatta were good. “It was pretty spectacular last time and we were really impressed with the number of people who drove up there. It’s not far from Nelson, only a 50 minute or so drive.” This will be the third time out in the water for drivers, although it’s the first of three rounds for the South Island. The power boat

season kicked off in November last year, with the first round hosted by Wanganui and the second held at Lake Karapiro in Cam-bridge on February 1. After the Lake Rotoiti Nelson Lakes Regatta, drivers will travel to Hokitika for Easter weekend races and then things will come to a close in Cromwell on Anzac weekend. It’s one of the biggest events on the power boat calendar and will determine who gains the title of 1NZ Cham-pion for 2015. Drivers will be coming from around the country to compete; as far north as Auckland and as far south as Invercargill. “It’s the third round of our national series and I’m currently sitting on third place on the table,” says locally-based driver and 1NZ champion for 2013, Julian Stilwell. “We were first after the first round so I’m quite

keen to get back up the table. We had a good round last round but it’s quite competitive and quite tough, we’ve got probably seven other guys that are quite capable of winning the round. The biggest thing at Rotoiti is altitude, it’s a lot higher than most of the other venues we race on, which has quite a lot to do with turning. Formula 1 as a class is becoming quite strong nationwide and this is the clos-est season we’ve ever had, with the most drivers that we’ve had capable of running at the top. It’s very competitive this season compared to others.” For spectators, the chance to see the power boats in action is an opportunity not to be missed. “It’s unique in that it’s unpredicta-ble. track and that’s constant, but when you’re on a race track on the water it changes and every race is different because the water changes, so the boats are quite spectacular because they can get out of shape and it’s quite a skill for the guys to read the water because it can get rough; it’s just something different,” says Denise. There are 22 races each day with most of the classes racing 4 laps of the triangular Lake Rotoiti circuit, while the Formula 1 Tunnels begin with a beach start and must complete 10 laps. “There’s a variety of racing from jun-ior class racing to the top level of powerboat racing in New Zealand,” says Denise. Boats competing this weekend include the grand

prix hydroplanes, formula one tunnels, jun-ior class racing, clubmans class; which is an entry-level class, 2.5 hydroplanes and the pro-stock and pro-com. This weekend also marks 50 years of the AE Baker Australasian Hydroplane Champion-ships. The competition is run between Aus-tralia and New Zealand. Thirteen years ago New Zealand sent a team to Australia which won the championships that gave them the right to bring it back to New Zealand, and until someone from Australia comes over here and beats the New Zealand team, it will remain here. Those watching the weekend’s racing will no doubt also be marvelling at the speed these

boats can reach. The Formula 1 Tunnels get-ting up to, and in excess of, 145mph while the grand prix hydroplanes reach 180mph. The event will be family-friendly too, as the Department of Conservation and Fish and Game will be organising a range of enter-tainment activities for children. Food will be on offer too, as part of a fundraising activity for Rotoiti School group the Kea Chicks. Head out to Lake Rotoiti this weekend and get amongst the action. Check out the power boats, enjoy the family-friendly atmosphere and support the local drivers. Racing begins on Saturday and Sunday around 11am and finishes at 4pm. This all-ages event is free for children and only $10 for adults.

Sleep is one of life’s luxuries and with a Slumberzone bed and mattress; luxury can be all yours for that perfect night’s sleep, all without costing the earth. Slumberzone is a New Zealand bed and mattress manufacturer and importer that is dedicated to more efficient processes and methods of production so that they can pass on to their customers luxurious beds at very affordable prices. Demand for their products has even seen a new second factory created in Auckland.

Slumberzone has an eye for developing the best quality beds; continually introducing superior and unique components that are exclusive to the company. They also have a wide range of beds to choose from so the team at Sweet Dreams can select a bed that suits your body’s unique requirements. There are six exciting ranges for customers to take their pick from, whether it’s an affordable and robust bed for your child’s first big bed or maybe you long for the ultimate sleep experience with

gel infused memory foam, zoned pocket springs and natural latex. Their range features Boutique, Traditional, Luxury, Comfort, E-Comfort and Commercial, all designed so that everyone can find a bed that fits them like a glove.

People spend around a third of their life in bed so why settle for anything less than perfect. To ensure customers find a bed that suits their body type, Slumberzone recommends that people think about the sleep surface (the components that each bed includes) not just the bed. This is why Slumberzone support their retailers throughout the country, so that they can give people the best advice when choosing a bed that is right for them.

Specialist bed shop, Sweet Dreams Beds Nelson is proud to be a stockist of Slumberzone beds, and store managers Andy and Antonia Dale are well equipped to show you all the benefits of choosing a Slumberzone bed. Andy

and Antonia have a desire to see all their

customers walk out the door with a bed that will give them countless nights of Sweet Dreams, so along with a complimentary alignment check to make sure you feel comfortable in your bed, they’re also offering a 30 night comfort guarantee. This offers you the peace of mind that if your bed doesn’t seem quite right when you get it home, Andy and Antonia will find you one that does.

All Slumberzone beds come with a warranty of five to ten years, and Slumberzone stands behind their products, assured of their quality and total satisfaction for customers. To get more information on the range of Slumberzone beds, visit their website at www.slumberzone.co.nz or come in and talk to Andy and Antonia at Sweet Dreams Beds, you’ll find them at 46 Rutherford St, Nelson.

We are all here working towards the same goal, which is to help people regardless of what emergency service you work for,” says Lisa. With Triple One Care’s services being in high demand and growing nationally, Lisa and her team will be looking for

additional medics and tutors in the near future. Those who do become part of the Triple One Care team must know their theory and have the practical skills to back it up. “We aren’t volunteers, we’re all paid professionals and we’re highly experienced, and that’s how we intend to keep it,” says Lisa. Nayland College’s Sophie Young and Frances Clark of Golden Bay High School also had a long match with Frances winning the third set in a tie break 7-5. In the girls’ competition, Nelson College for Girls A defeated Marlborough Girls to qual-ify for the South Island champs to be played in Timaru next month. Crowds flocked to enjoy wine, food, friends, family, fun and music at the Brightwater Wine and Food festival. The weather was perfect with just a slight breeze to keep the temperature down. A big thumbs up goes to all of the spon-sors, Rotarians, stall holders, musicians and the many volunteers that made the day such a suc-cess, and also to Middle Earth Vineyard for a spectacular venue. Nicky Bryan, Terry Baxter, Cloe and Tom McKay were busy at the NZ

King Salmon stall at the Brightwater Wine and Food Festival. Because NZ King Salmon donated all of the salmon and Bidvest donated bagels and cream cheese, 100% of the proceeds from this stall were able to be donated to the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter. Well done, guys!

mates and get ready for some serious fishing be-cause the biggest fish caught on the day will get the biggest prize. No lucky prize draw for spec-tators here, you need to do the hard yards for a chance at a reward. Things kick off at 5am on Saturday, March 7, al-though people can stake out their spot and get set up as early as they wish. However, like any competition, there are a few rules that need to be followed and the honesty of those competing is essential for a good clean competition. While the full list of rules can be viewed on the website at www.tasmanbaysnapperclassic.co.nz, some of the more important conditions include all

fish to be presented whole at the weigh in, late weigh ins will not be accepted; you must be in the queue by 5pm, one line in the water per per-son, fish must be played by only one angler, no long lines or set nets in the water or to be carried on the boat, no sharks or rays are to be taken or killed, and of course, safety is key so don’t forget your lifejackets. A little bit of fishing etiquette is also required, so don’t park up within 100 metres of another boat, please refrain from speeding past other boats or kayaks, or anchoring in someone’s burley trail. Please keep the public ramp as clear as possible and remove all fish and waste from The Speights Ale House at the end of the night. Other than those ground rules, Tasman Bay is your oyster

so have fun and happy fishing. Prize giving will commence at The Speights Ale House at 7pm, but if you finish early and want to stake your claim on a good viewing spot for the weigh in, Speights will be open for food and drinks from 10am. A courtesy van from Rich-mond to Atawhai means there is no excuse to drink and drive. The evening will also feature a fish and donated item auction with all pro-ceeds going to the Big Brothers Big Sisters charity. The auction is not only open to en-trants but the general public as well, start-ing at 5:45pm. There will be a free meal and drink for every entrant into the competi-tion and afterwards you can rock the night away to a great band. Prizes include over $4500 in Simrad Electronics and fishing gear for the heaviest snapper, over $1000 of fishing gear and donated items for the av-erage-sized snapper, $4000 of Shimano and Bite Fishing Tackle from Big Blue Dive & Fish, a brand new 2.5hp Mercury outboard engine from Totally Boating, and over $750 in cosmetics from Unichem Pharmacy for women’s heaviest snapper. If the weather does pose a problem, the compe-tition will be postponed until the following day, Sunday, March 8. Fishing is to take place in the Tasman Bay only; this gives you a huge area from the south side of French pass and inside a line from separation point to Greville Harbour. Not in the marine reserve. This event could not be run without the generous

sponsors that support it and the hard-working committee behind the scenes. Please make sure you support the sponsors and honour the guide-lines of the competition, and if you are the team that takes out the Tasman Bay Snapper Classic Champion Cup, feel free to brag as much as you like. Entry into the competition can be done by fill-

ing out a form online at http://www.tasmanbay-snapperclassic.co.nz/2015-tbsc-register-here.html with a low fee of $200. Entries close 11pm, March 5, so get in now as late entries won’t be counted, and payment in full must be received no later than Friday, March 6. For more information about the competition, contact organiser Troy Dando on 027 31 22 911.

Now is the time to pull out the fishing rod from your shed and fill up the chilly bin with ice as the snapper are biting. The fish have just fin-ished spawning and are now coming in closer to shore to feed up for the winter. This, along with a significant change in the water temperature, has made for optimum snapper fishing condi-tions.Fishing guide, Troy Dando says the snapper should keep feeding for the rest of the month. “You will generally catch snapper in the wider bay during this time and fishing around scallop beds and the shallows of the back beach at Tahu-nanui are ideal spots,” says Troy. He recommends stray lining or ledger rigs and using pilchards or squid tentacles as bait.

Barry Bird from Seabird Charters Nelson, runs day fishing and diving trips within the bay and has been catching good-sized snapper over the past week “There have been plenty of snap-per off the Boulder Bank and Cape Souci lately,” says Barry.

Being a part of the Fight 4 Victory is a massive personal challenge – that’s no secret. But it’s not just the training that takes some adjustment, the added attention takes just as much getting used to.The training for Fight 4 Victory has taken over my life to some degree. When I’m not doing it I’m thinking about it or can still feel those stiff muscles as a result of it. All of that I expected. What I didn’t expect was all the stuff that comes with it – promotional stuff, interest from the public, which may seem a little odd coming from a journalist.Since it was announced in Waimea Weekly that I’d be fighting Hayden Thompson, there’s been plenty of interest. I’ve had friends of his tell me to make sure I hit him hard, I’ve had friends of his tell me that he will “waste” me. I’ve had his old rugby coach pop into my office to tell me what a grave mistake I’ve made, “he knocked out ten guys in one season”, I was told.I’ve also had the 11-year-old son of the Weekly’s owner ask me if he can come and watch the fight with his butterfly net, “to catch your teeth as they get knocked out”.As you can imagine, none of this made me feel particularly chipper. In pubs, supermarkets, and even down Trafal-gar St and in Richmond Mall, I’ve had people come up to me asking how the training is going.I didn’t expect that. People are genuinely inter-ested and excited about the event. That’s a testa-ment to the success of the original Fight 4 Vic-tory in 2013.And then there are the radio shows, promotion-al photos and even this column.Last week, Hayden and I were invited onto the morning sports show on Newstalk ZB with Murray Leaning and Dave Birdling. It was a bloody good laugh and was the first time I’d seen Hayden since the fight was announced. We eyed each other up and he told the show’s audience that I could have a career in music after the fight because I would have had “more hits than Elvis”.And on Friday night we all lined up at Mc-Cashin’s Brewery to have our photos taken by Evan Barnes from Shuttersport for the official fight programme.I’m not used to being on the other side of the camera and all the attention is taking a bit of getting used to.All the while the training, the relentless train-ing, continues to dominate our lives. It’s five and a half weeks until the fight and the interest from the public just increases the pres-sure we feel, which provides plenty of motiva-tion for training.

ley Southgate, wait to be tagged by their team-mates during the school’s triathlon last Friday.

There is sure to be plenty of mud, sweat and tears when Nelson’s first-ever organised obstacle course race is held at Happy Valley in April. The Wairua Warrior race is organ-ised by Stoke-based Wairua Mud Rookies Obstacle Racing Club, with help from Sport Tasman. The club, who competed in the Tough Mudder race in Auckland last year, found there weren’t any obstacle course races around our region, so decided to organise one them-selves.The event consists of a 6km race for beginners and a 12km tougher version for more serious com-petitors. The course over undulat-ing terrain has a range of natural and man-made obstacles involv-ing mud, water, walls, ropes and barbed wire. Wairua Mud Rookies Obstacle Racing Club President, Greg Witi-ka says the race is designed to be challenging but achievable and has something for everyone.“All kinds of sports people with different fitness levels can partici-pate in this event, from runners to walkers, to gym goers, there is no other event that puts all differ-ent kinds of sports into one”, says Greg.Anyone over the age of 16 years can compete as an individual or as part of a team and so far they’ve received entries from rugby clubs, local colleges and businesses. It aims to attract around 500 com-petitors, including a team from Australia.“It is a good way to have some fun

and it is an ideal team building exercise. The great thing is that as an individual you may not be able to get over an eight foot wall but as a team, you can definitely get over the wall. In this race complete strangers are going to help you out along the way,” says Greg. The Wairua Warrior obstacle race will be held at Happy Valley, Cable Bay Rd, Nelson on April 11, with all proceeds going towards the Life Education Trust. Sport Tasman is accepting race registrations at www.wairuawar-rior.co.nz For more information on the race, please contact Sharron Martin at [email protected]
