Thieves were so neat and fast when they removed large shopfront windows to steal $8500 worth of equipment from two Richmond busi-nesses, the robberies went unnoticed by security guards and staff.About $2500 worth of elec-trical equipment was stolen from BNT in Richmond on June 24 and three days later a $6500 motorcycle was sto-len from Morley Motorcycle and Marine in Wakatu Estate in Stoke. The burglars gained entry to both businesses by removing a shopfront win-dow and Morley’s managing director Ian Robinson says the burglars were so tidy, staff and customers didn’t notice anything was wrong until two days later.“The alarm went off at 4.23 in the morning and our secu-rity company was there four minutes later but they didn’t notice anything obvious was wrong,” Ian says. “I went to

get it out. They obviously had the right tools and knew what they were do-ing.”BNT shop supervisor, Ben Luff says he arrived at work at 7.30 on Fri-day morning but didn’t initially notice their shop window was missing.“A truck rolled past the front door and I thought “that sounds loud” and that’s when I noticed the window,” he says.Ben says the only good news is that the burglars didn’t damage the 1 metre by 1.5 metre glass and it will be able to be reused.

“They’d picked all the rubber out and removed the flashings and lifted the window out and leaned it against the building. It’s a big-sized piece of glass so they obviously had some glazier’s tools and the right skills.”Ben says the thieves were also audacious because BNT’s shop front is well illuminated and visible from Oxford St. Nelson police are investi-gating the burglaries and would like to hear from anyone who has any rel-evant information. The stolen motorcycle is a 2012 Honda CRF 150cc dirt bike.

A car accident on Champion Rd was alledgedly the result of a dog jumping on top of the driver. Do you think animals should be restrained when they’re in a moving vehicle?

Val Kendrick, Richmond.

“In that incident yes, that’s scary. She could have killed herself or someone else. I

think they should be.”

Andrew Tudor, Wakefield.

“I think they should because they pose a danger if they move around when you’re driving and distract you.”

Shirley Kane, Richmond.

“I do, in the backseat with a little harness on them. Easi-est thing in the world cause they’re like a baby, they go

right through the glass.”

Aden Smith, Richmond.

“Honestly I’d say yeah, it does pose a problem when you’re

driving and it goes crazy.”

A dog jumped on to the lap of a 16 year old driver, frightening her, as she crashed into a power pole.Rosette Hailes-Paku, who has only had her learner’s licence for two weeks, was driving down Champion Rd to her new home with her mother, 11 year old sister and their pet dog, late on Thursday afternoon. Rosette says the dog jumped “on top of me” from the back seat, before the van hit the curb and slammed front-on into a power pole, damaging it, cut-ting power to the neighbour-hood for hours, and putting her

sister in hospital. Her sister wasn’t wearing a seat belt and hit the windscreen.Rosette was in “real bad shock” when describing the accident. “It was so scary,” she said at the scene, with mascara running down her cheek and being sup-ported by a fellow student and friend from Garin College. “It was such a dumb thing to do. I thought the power pole was go-ing to explode.”Nelson Police communica-

tions manager Barbara Dunn confirmed there were just three people in the van, that the driver was on a learner’s licence, and says there is no legal requirement to restrain an animal inside a vehicle, un-less they were on the back of a truck or ute.The crash is still under investi-gation, so she could not com-ment whether the driver would be facing charges. The cost of the power pole is an insurance matter and any decision on the fate of the car would be as well, Barbara says. The dog is fine.

Brightwater School pupils didn’t need to go to Glasgow to experience the colour and excitement of the Common-wealth Games, after compet-ing in their own games com-plete an opening ceremony featuring kilted pipers, Scot-tish Highland terriers and a visit from the Queen.Last Friday’s Brightwater games started with kilted pipers, former pupils Rachel Shaw and Matthew Arnold, leading a procession of ath-letes dressed in the colours of 20 of the Commonwealth countries onto the school’s playing field. Then Queen Elizabeth II arrived, waving from the back of a convert-

ible chauffeured by principal Gerald Baldwin before giv-ing her welcoming speech and declaring the games open. The school’s 285 pupils then competed in a variety of

traditional Commonwealth Games events like high jump, long jump and shot put as well as some not so traditional ones like the po-tato race and rugby pass. Al-though the day was all about

having fun, deputy principal Alan Dobson says there was a serious side to the friendly games with Fiji winning the gold medal for recording the most points from 20 events held throughout the day.

Staff at the Star & Garter are deeply upset after a woman, who is one of their regulars, was seriously injured during an incident at the Richmond tavern early on Sunday morning. Nelson Police say the woman suffered a se-rious eye injury when a member of a group that had been ejected from the tavern on Queen St, at about 3am on Sunday, threw a glass object at the tavern’s smoking area.

The glass object shattered and a shard flew into the eye of the woman sitting in the area. The woman was admitted to Nelson Hos-pital where she had surgery to remove the glass and was reported to be in a stable condition on Monday. “She is a regular here and we are really con-cerned about her welfare,” Star & Garter general manager Jerome Nahi says. “She

was just sitting there, she was an innocent bystander which made it even worse - we hope she’ll be alright.” Jerome says the Star & Garter has an ex-cellent security record and is taking the incident very seriously. He says staff are cooperating with police and could not comment on the details of the incident un-til the investigation was completed. The Star & Garter has a licence to stay open

and sell alcohol until 3am on Sundays and needs to vacate patrons by 3.30am.Detective sergeant Mark Kaveney says two people are helping them with their inquir-ies into the incident, after they appealed to the public for witnesses. The two witnesses are members of the group that was ejected and included the person who allegedly threw the glass object.Mark can be contacted on 546 3840.

Bronwyn White from the district health board, Russ Aiton from the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust, Bill Dahlberg from the Canterbury Community Trust and Paul Brockie from Absolute Energy.

A hundred Nelson homes will be made warmer over the next year thanks to a new $300,000 project aimed at keeping people healthier. The Warmer Healthier Homes Project was announced last week and will see homes insulated for free, which will see huge eco-nomic and health benefits to the region, say its founders. The Canterbury Community Trust has partnered with the Nelson Tasman Housing Trust, Absolute Energy, Nelson Marl-borough District Health Board

and the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority in the project, aimed at providing low-income families with warmer, more insulated homes.Canterbury Community Trust’s Bill Dahlberg says the initial funding will be made available for people referred by the health board. “Often, people in need don’t put their hand up, so we want to make sure that people with multiple hospitalisations will be first on the list.”The group hopes to start on its first house in the next few weeks.

A Nelson woman has been conned out of $250,000 in an online friendship that turned out to be a scam. It’s the latest in the long, and increasing, line of Nelson people who are falling victim to online scammers, mainly via dating or companion websites. Age Concern Nelson manager Sue Tilby says the problem has been growing over the past year, as trusting older people get more and more computer-savvy.Sue says the quarter of a million dollar rip-off is the biggest she has heard of locally and that it took place over a year, with the amounts the victim sent growing over time. “The person was in denial and has still not totally accepted that it was a scam.”Loneliness is a common factor in the cases Age Concern has dealt with and Sue says older people tend to be more trusting, so are open to scammers. “Older people tend to think that the computer is a trustworthy piece of equipment. It’s quite sad because we want them to get computer savvy because it’s an extension of life, but this is one of the down sides.”Nelson internet safety expert John Parsons, says he’s not surprised as he’s also dealt with an increasing number of cases where scammers are fooling locals. In one case he worked on, a Nelson woman sent $28,000 to a scammer off-shore. “When I met her she was on the verge of losing $100,000. By the end of working with that family we had to reformat the computers, had to change the land line and we had to give her another cellphone. In response to the increasing number of vic-tims, Age Concern Nelson is hosting a semi-nar this month called Scam Savvy. It’s aimed at educating people around online scams and will be held at Trafalgar Pavilion. Age Concern are hoping for around 120 attendees to listen to Bronwyn Groot on August 21 from 1.30pm.

A rare collection of medals, given to the family of a private after he died in World War 2, will be up for auction next weekend. The medals currently belong to the sister of Nelson soldier G.C O’Connor, and will be sold along with a portrait of himself, a watch, his will and a letter he wrote to his family during the war. Included amongst the medals is a Distinguished Fly-ing Cross, which is awarded to junior officers and senior non commissioned officers of the Air Force for courage and de-votion to duty.More than 1000 of the these medals were awarded to New Zealanders for their actions during the Second World War.Auctioneer John Walker says the collection is an important part of Nelson’s history, and while he was reluctant to sell such items – as it’s usually en-couraged to pass them down the family line – he says the sister does not have any family to pass them down to. “What makes the collection valuable is the rest of the story. This is the first time I’ve come across a complete collection of his med-als, his watch and all of his doc-umentation,” he says. “You’d normally just get one medal, or

a set, but not the rest of it. The Flying Cross itself is the most valuable one.”In the letter to his family, G.C O’Connor talks about the ciga-rettes he’s been smoking and requests cake to be sent over, a little piece at a time, by his mother. The will was completed in 1940, but John was unaware of what year he actually died. John expects the set to go somewhere between $2500 and

$10,000, and says it’s the type of collection a museum or a war historian would be interested in. “I think it’ll go to a local. We’ve got some avid collectors of war memorabilia. A lot of people would buy a medal to fill their collection as well.”The auction will take place at the former Richmond Trading Post building on McGlashen Ave on Saturday from 11am, and features around 300 lots.

No Code Compliance Certificate (CCC)If this is your situation and you are thinking of selling, then I suggest that you call into the council and complete the application form requesting a final inspection. A building inspector will make arrangements to meet with you and check that the work has been completed in accordance with the building consent that was issued. They may ask for a copy of the electrical certificate or the drain layers certificate, which are required to be lodged on the file. They may say that everything is in order and will sign off the works and recommend that a CCC be issued.

If the inspector finds a few bits and pieces that require your attention, he or she will list these for you and return at your request to inspect the remedial work, before signing off the work.

The new look store, situated around Michael Hill Jeweller in the mall, will also have more lines, including Adi-das Original and Lorna Jane. Both Dave and Sandy will be based in the Nelson store on Trafalgar St, which they also own, in between the closure of the Queen St store and the opening of the Richmond Mall premises. They would like to thank their loyal customers for the support over the past 14 years, and were looking for-ward to serving them in a new store shortly. The Queen St store will soon be occupied by Hunting and Fishing.

A trio of trail blazing con-tractors have been busy donating their time and machinery to help create mountainbike tracks around the Nelson-Tasman region, and they could get even bus-ier with an ambitious project to build epic back-country trails on the horizon.Last week, Andrew Spittal of Ching Contracting and Gary Donaldson of Donaldson Civil completed the second stage of the Escalator moun-tainbike track in the Rich-mond Hills for the Tasman District Council. Andrew and Gary spent two weeks in diggers working with Chris Mildon of the Mountain-bike Trails Trust cutting the 2.5 kilometre climbing track that links with the first stage starting in Easby Park.At the same time, Malcolm Edridge of Mike Edridge Contracting has been work-ing on the new Big Bush mountainbike trails near St Arnaud. All three contrac-tors are providing their exca-vators and time for free and Chris says that’s reduced the cost of building the tracks by about 80 per cent.“If we didn’t have these guys then a lot of these tracks probably wouldn’t get built,’

Chris says. “Andrew and Gary supplied two diggers, a hydraulic rock breaker and fuel and their time in the Richmond Hills and Mal-colm has machinery and some of his staff working at St Arnaud, the generosity is amazing.”Chris says Andrew started the philanthropy ball rolling when he worked on tracks in the Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park a few years ago. An-drew subsequently worked on tracks around Nelson and now Gary and Malcolm are helping out. All three are executive mem-bers of the Nelson Marlbor-ough Contractors Federation and keen mountainbikers.“I’ve been doing it for a few years now, and one day Gary

said he’d come and give me a hand, and now Malcolm’s got on board too,” Andrew says. “We are all contractors and we like to build things that people can use - it’s good for us to be able to do something for the community. I enjoy doing it and it’s so addictive.”Malcolm says he is happy to help out with the St Arnaud trails because all his fam-ily and many of his staff are keen mountainbikers and it benefits the wider commu-nity. “I have a young fam-ily growing up and they’ll be able to enjoy these tracks in the years to come,” Malcolm says. “We also have a lot of keen mountainbikers on our staff and they are good (exca-vator) operators so they have been helping out too.”

Tasman District Council reserves officer Steve Rich-ards says Andrew, Gary and Malcolm are “adding such tremendous value to the de-velopment of the tracks”.“We are lucky to have them just like we are lucky to have all our volunteers. All these tracks are certainly happen-ing a lot faster with them on board.” The next big mission for the trail blazing contrac-tors could be the Epic Trails Project which aims to build a network of long distance back country rides around the region. All three are trus-tees of the Mountainbike Trials Trust. Its next target is a loop track from the Hack-ett Hut to the Starveall Hut through to the Lee Valley.

Forget everything you think you know about projectors. The latest projectors are outstanding viewing, have outstanding sound and thanks to Begg’s Musicworks are now incredibly afford-able. If you are a sports fan, movie fan, gamer or music fan you should visit Tim and his team at Begg’s to see why they are so excited about the latest projectors they now have in store. In fact Tim is so keen to see Nelsonians give them a go he has put together a projector package for just $6999. “People’s perception of what projectors look like and what they are now is very different, the technology has improved out of sight. Five years ago they were good but you had to pay a lot of money, five years ago good was $15,000 now good is $3000,” says Tim. Many households use a normal television for watching the news and other programmes but pull down the projector screen for serious viewing, includ-ing sports, movies, gaming and watching music DVDs.“If you want to sit down and actually watch something, this is perfect. The picture quality is

very, very good and the movie experience is so much better than watching it on a big screen TV, and the cost now is not horrible. In fact, it’s quite affordable,” says Tim. Tim says he doesn’t see what all the fuss is about with 3D on televisions but on a projector it is “outstanding.” Screen size can be literally any-

thing right up to an in-credible 300 inches but most people are going for between 80 and 120 inch screens. Tim says the package he’s put together gives people a Epson projec-tor, Yamaha receiver and you can choose between a Klipsch speaker pack-age or a Yamaha speaker package. “Both sound great and the options are huge. If people come

here, sit down have a look, have a listen and then we can tailor something to suit. It’s very cool, I use my projector all the time, the biggest prob-lem I have is kicking the teenagers off it because I want to use it.”Call in and see the team and sample what a true home theatre looks and sounds like, 264-268 Hardy St, Nelson or call 548 8699.

Richmond furniture retailer Lynfords is set to move off Queen St, but is doing so to “expand the business”.After being situated in the Queen St store for the past three and a half years, Lynfords is now shift-ing to the Robinson’s complex off Main Rd Stoke where its neighbours will include Super Cheap Auto and a local cycle store.Lynfords owner Lindsay Thomason says he is aiming to be settled in to the new premises by the start of November and he’s looking forward to the new challenge. “We simply had to find a bigger building with more space and more car-parks,” he says. “We have some wonderful new lines of furniture arriving and we are also intro-ducing some more high-quality product to our customers”. Lindsay says the new location will allow for larg-er storage and display areas. “We think it’ll be a

good position. We are a destination type store but the ease of access is quite an appealing as-pect.”Lynfords are the Nelson agent for the Danske Mobler range of furniture and the high-quality range of Stressless chairs. It will be business as usual until the big move.

Retailer ‘expands’ to Stoke

Cheeky Nelsonians are using cour-tesy trailers for more than what they’re intended for, say the busi-nesses that own them.Last month, a customer at Bark Processors in Richmond was pho-tographed buying a trailer-load of bark with a Goldpine courtesy trailer. The photo was shared on social me-dia with the caption: “Don’t think Goldpine would be too stoked.”Goldpine manager John McDonald says it’s disappointing that some of their customers would “abuse the

privilege” of the courtesy trailers.“Obviously it should be from the store to home and back again. Should I become aware of someone doing it, I would certainly be reluc-tant to let them take one again.”But he says he wouldn’t start chas-ing people who do it. “We’ve got bigger things to worry about.”Sand and Land owner Nigel Sutton says he once caught someone tow-ing scrap metal in one of his trailers and he “had a word” when he came back. But that’s the worst case he’s seen. “Most people are pretty good.”

The Kaka Shield is rugby, but not as you know it. Rugby boots are substituted for gumboots or sneakers, drinks breaks include scooping a glass of beer from a stainless steel bucket sat next to a keg, short line-outs are literally that with players down on their knees, men and women play on the same team and, for some weird traditional reason, the away team always wins, meaning there is always a reverse fixture the fol-lowing year. The Kaka Shield was once played as a competitive rugby match between Tui and Sherry Valley in 1923 and has been con-tested every year since – other than during the war years. Its most modern take includes plenty of antics and is played between Ta-pawera and Richmond, but no one knows when those two teams took over, or when the new rules came in to play. The shield itself is apparently more valuable than the Ranfurly Shield – just not as prized – with gold nug-gets and sovereigns scattered across its front.Last year, Richmond won a nine-a-side fixture and the score was 6-3, meaning the shield returned to the Star & Garter. This weekend the Kaka Shield re-turns to Jubilee Park, and Tapawera will win again. But that’s all part of the fun, and David Walker, who has

been playing in the competition for 40 years plus, says anyone is wel-come, especially older players with a sense of humour. David says the value of the shield keeps the tradition alive, and he was looking forward to the 100th anniversary, which is looming.

“We want to make sure it gets to the 100th year and it supports the kids too,” he says.Last year’s event raised $700 for Ta-pawera JAB, and this year there will be a meal and an auction too, which always helps the cause. The Kaka Shield match between Richmond and Tapawera begins at 1pm this Sunday with a Tapawera versus Waimea intermediate selec-tion match following it at 2pm be-fore the auction and meal. For more information, contact Da-vid on 544 6670.

HEALTHY EATERS: Future’s Preschool’s Leslie Mayse, left, receives their gold award for healthy eating from the Heart Foundation’s Chloe Balder-stone. Future’s Pre School were the proud recipi-ents of the Heart Foundations Gold Award for healthy eating which recognises their efforts in keeping their centre healthy for the children, the parents and the staff. “We’re just trying to show that our centre is eating and drinking healthy which gives more brain power to the kids,” says Future’s Leslie Mayse. This is Future’s Pre School’s second gold award which covers them for two years and Leslie says it is an important achieve-ment for the centre, showing that they are helping children and parents make healthier choices for their long-term well-being. A group that gives young teenagers life skills and helps them make informed decisions about their relationships and sexual activity has been nomi-nated for the Car Company Charity Drive competition. YrChoice is a preventative life skills programme that is deliv-ered by trained young adults to year 9 and 10 students in many schools throughout the coun-try. It is managed by the youth charity Family Education Net-work, and Nelson co-ordinator Lynda Rea says it is presently offered in Waimea College, Nelson College for Girls and Garin College.Lynda says one of the keys to the success of YrChoice is that it is delivered by a male and female young adult. “The stu-dents can relate to these people because they are younger and that’s one of the strengths of YrChoice,” Lynda says. “Stu-dents aren’t always comfortable talking to teachers and parents about relationships and sex.”Lynda says they have six pre-senters in the Nelson-Tasman region aged from 18 to 25. The presenters are all trained

and deliver a formatted, inter-active lesson that is designed to complement the school health education curriculum.YrChoice presenter Stephanie Mackintosh says the students always enjoy the programme and it invariably leads to “a lot of interesting discussion.” “We make it fun and give them something they can relate to,” Stephanie says. “They get right into it which can be a bit scary sometimes.”The programme has an annual budget of around $20,000 and

is funded by grants, sponsor-ship and donations, as well as small fee from the schools.Lynda says they would love to win the Charity Drive so they can take YrChoice into more schools and help even more young teenagers make the right decisions. The Car Company Charity Drive competition started last year and offers $10,000 to a non-profit group. Groups can enter the competition until August 22 by going to www.carcompanynelson.co.nz

Snowboarders won’t have to go far to find snow this Friday, with two tones of crushed ice being dropped into Mapua for the Play-house Café’s Jib Jam event.Sponsored by Hogey’s Surf, Sealords, Speights Summit and Placemak-ers Nelson, the Jib Jam gives snowboarders a rare chance to strut their stuff in front of spectators away from the ski field, with a specially built rail con-structed in front of a three-metre-high ramp. This year’s event is free, and Nic Roland, owner of the Playhouse Café, says the reason for that is to bring in more spectators and compet-itors. “I’m just a big snow-boarding and skiing fan and I love the moun-tain. I thought it’d be a no brainer to bring an event like this to my venue,” Nic says when asked how it started four years ago. “We’ve got the area, it’s custom made for it and it’s su-per fun.”

The competition will be run as an open jam style format, meaning riders will have as many chances as possible to perform their best trick within the allo-cated time. From there, three skiers and three snowboarders will go

through to a final, with one in each discipline crowned the winner. The competition begins at 6:30pm, with finals held between 7:45pm and 8pm.For further informa-tion please call Nic Ro-land at 540 2985.

Explore the latest trends in sustainable farming through a science-based approach to a wide range of organic techniques and systems.

Ideal for lifestyle block owners, home gardeners and/or commercial growers, this course will provide key knowledge and skills required for organic growing.

Learn to build ecosystems, promote biodiversity and increase soil and plant health, instead of relying on arti cial fertilisers and poisonous sprays.

Topics covered include organic philosophies, certi cation, soil management, soil food webs, composting, companion planting, crop rotation, green manures, weed control, pest and disease management, plant knowledge and an introduction to permaculture.

This knowledge can be applied not only to food crops, but to the cultivation of any plants – from suburban gardens to pastures, orchards, shelter belts and woodlots.

In addition to attending tutorials and workshops or eld trips, students will need to complete practical and theory assignments in their own time.

Some prior knowledge of horticulture and growing plants is recommended although keen beginners are invited to apply.

Although this programme has a horticultural bias, pastoral farmers wishing to get an understanding of what organic farming is all about will also nd this course of value.

On successful completion you will be awarded a Certi cate in Organic Horticulture (Level 3). Networking between organic growing enthusiasts is an added bonus to joining this course.

adjusted appropriately. For example the

‘Endeavour’ ship in the crest is

still white, it has not been reversed

into a negative.

You’ve nominated who you think does it best, now it’s time to vote. The 2014 New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards are the most prestigious local awards the industry has and recognises the best in the hospitality business. This year, hundreds of businesses and workers were nominated by people from Golden Bay to Murchison to Rai Valley, and everywhere in between. There was an overwhelming response so the finalists were narrowed down to the top in each category, based on the number of nominated votes. The awards are split into two categories – industry awards, which are judged by experts, and the people’s choice awards, voted and judged by you. So it’s important you have your say! Simply fill in who you want to win, cut out the form and drop it off to either newspaper office in Selwyn Pl, Nelson or Salisbury Rd, Richmond. Or send

it to Nelson Hospitality Awards, PO Box 503 Wellington.Voting will close at 12 noon on Friday 8 August, so get your entry form in before then. The winners will be announced at the biannual New Zealand King Salmon Nelson Hospitality Awards event to be held on Monday 25 August, venue to be confirmed.Tickets will be on sale at Hardys Bar. Proud to celebrate Mobility 4 You 1st Birthday in their Queen St Store

269 Queen St Richmond Ph 544 6603SALES - SERVICE - RENTALS

Mobility 4 You has been providing the Nelson District with excellent mobility solutions for a year now and owners Meryl and Robin are proud of how far their store has come since the initial opening.

Robin Jordan is a local mobility expert and has been helping local people maintain their independence for nearly 40 years. His Queen St business, FAV Mobile Solutions, has always been there for people, stocking a range of mobility scooters for sale and hire, as well as servicing their equipment. After being in the business so long it was a natural progression for Robin to move into a more comprehensive range of mobility products for adults and children, and thanks to the help of his wife Meryl, the new shop has moved from strength to strength. “It’s actually grown a lot and we’re getting customers coming back, they will have bought something and they might be coming back for a service which is good, word’s getting out there and we have lot’s more stock. As people ask for something specific, I do my best to source it,” says Meryl.

Mobility 4 You supplies customers with everything they need to keep moving and make daily life easier to live. They are proud to keep all ages mobile, catering for toddlers to the

aged, with a range of stock from car seats for the young to walkers for 80 year olds. The Mobility 4 You store is also a great place to showcase their products so customers can easily browse the equipment they need.

Meryl has been enthusiastic about running Mobility 4 You since they decided to open the

store and has been committed to improving her knowledge on their products t h r o u g h research, and learning from c u s t o m e r s of their r e q u i r e m e n t s in order to offer people the best service and advice. FAV Mobile Solutions is also still there to support the new store on site, with the mobility scooter servicing along with car audio i n s t a l l a t i o n , which means they really are the one stop-shop.

Their extensive range of children’s stock includes some exclusive brands, as well as the tried and trusted names that are all readily available to assist and satisfy any family, whether they are looking to accommodate a new child or are a growing family in need of mobility solutions. Meryl and Robin are also looking to become fully-qualified child restraint technicians as another helpful service to offer their customers. It means they can offer reliable advice on car seats, install the seat and service it, so parents can be sure their child is safe when they are on the road.

Robin and Meryl’s aim is to provide top quality products that every family can afford, whether it’s a car seat, push chair or bassinet. Being affordable also means catering to those with temporary mobility requirements who don’t want to purchase equipment. Mobility 4 You has a great range of products available for hire that can easily accommodate customer’s long or short term needs. W h e e l c h a i r s , walkers, lift chairs and scooters are all available for family coming to stay, or people out of hospital looking for a hand getting around the house. “Whether you need a chair temporarily or have the grandkids come and stay, there are plenty of affordable options for you,” says Robin. “Hiring the product you need for the meantime is a great solution if your mobility issues are temporary. It’s the affordable option and we are one of the few around town that are able to offer such a service.”

Christmas is always a busy time for hiring equipment and Meryl advises to get in quick and book what you need to ensure it’s

available for you.

Whatever you purchase from Mobility 4 You, you can be sure they’ll always stand by their products with a back up service, particularly with scooter sales, so should you have an issue with it, they’ll be there on the spot every time to

put things right.

Birthdays are always a time for gift-giving, and to celebrate their first year in the new shop, Meryl and Robin are offering some generous deals across the store. There will be 20 per cent off all mobility products and 30 percent of all baby, car seat and nursery items, which is great news for their customers. So when you need a temporary fix to

a mobility issue, or a permanent solution to help keep you mobile, call into Mobility 4 You for some great specials and the advice and knowledge of the local mobility experts, Robin and Meryl Jordan.

For any enquiries into how they can help you, visit them at the store on the main street of Richmond or call them on 544 6603

Keep the heat inside this winter

Business Update. Adv.

We all deserve a dry warm and healthy homeRowan Dron is delighted to be your local SmartVent System installer and believes this is the best home ventilation system around. If you asked an expert electrician, rather than the next door-to-door sales-person who comes knocking, or a fast talk-ing telemarketer, chances are that they’d recommend SmartVent too. Recent inde-pendent research revealed that 8 out of 10 electricians recommend SmartVent as the home ventilation solution to choose.A home ventilation system from SmartVent quietly ventilates your home with fresher, drier air; removing condensation and moisture and creating a healthier, more comfortable living environment.SmartVent rids your home of condensa-tion, crying windows, wet sills, damp walls. These are all signs of too much moisture in the home. Damp conditions lead to mould and mildew. They damage your paint and wallpaper, rot your walls and furniture, harm your curtains, furnishings and clothes. Mould and mildew lead to air-borne allergens and aggravate respiratory illnesses like asthma. So don’t put up with crying windows and damp walls – it’s cost-ing you money, takes time to clean up and could be dramatically affecting your fam-ily’s health.Breathe fresh clean air by reducing air-

borne toxins from tobacco smoke, house-hold cleaners, and formaldehyde from furniture, carpet and building materials. SmartVent also reduces pollutants such as dust and dust mites, pet dander and pollen, all of which can trigger asthma, allergies and other respiratory conditions.SmartVent Synergy is a True Heat Recovery system capable of extracting stale, mois-ture-laden air from inside your home and bringing in fresher, drier air simultaneous-ly. Synergy is a completely balanced sys-tem, that recovers and re- uses up to 90% of the heat from the warm air extracted from within your home. An extremely en-ergy efficient way to re-use heat you have already generated and paid for from your heat pump, log fire or other heat source.SmartVent is cheaper than other ventila-tion systems, is of higher quality and they are a local NZ company that uses NZ-made gear. It’s future proofed so you can up-grade at any time, it’s easy to operate and has whisper quiet running, as well as a five year guarantee. To discover exactly how SmartVent can keep your home warmer, drier and healthier, check out their website www.smartvent.co.nz or arrange for Rowan to call and provide a free home assessment.Don’t forget, we can service your heat-pumps too.

Local builders swapped their tool belts and hard hats for suits and ties at the Registered Master Builders House of the Year regional awards, at the Rutherford Hotel on Saturday night.

The event was attended by members of the local building industry. There were 12 goldaward win-ners from the region who will now be assessed alongside gold-award winners from

across the country to find the National Gold Reserve final-ists, which will be announced in September. The national category win-ners, and registered master builders supreme awards, will

be announced in Auckland in November. This year saw the supreme award for House of the year go to the St Arnaud business Harris Builders, and Blen-heim company Roger Hogg

TEAM – many of us work in teams and understand that when working together the sum really is more than the individ-ual parts. Together Everyone Achieves More; there is no question about that.Did you know that local church min-isters meet together each month to en-courage and support each another, share ideas and pray together? We hope our unity has a flow on effect to our churches because we want to work together more. Our churches are doing some things together: Remix in primary schools, 24 – 7 in Waimea College, Lunch on the

Hill, Pinnacle House at Grace for exam-ple. Recently seven churches in the area had a ‘pulpit swap’. The min-isters swapped churches for a day. It was heaps of fun; the church folk enjoyed hearing from someone different and the ministers enjoyed getting out and about.“We all worship the same God, so it doesn’t really matter what church we go to,” noted one church member. “Churches do differ on some things but we agree that Jesus Christ is Lord;

that is the basis of our unity.” The Richmond Waimea Minister’s Asso-ciation was formed some years ago. We have a written agreement of our mutual commitment which the pastors re-sign

most years. Pastor Steve King from Rich-mond New Life chaired the as-sociation for a number of years and did a fantastic job. Thanks Steve. I feel very privileged to follow in your footsteps.More recently our association has been looking at ways in which our churches can work more closely together. Where there is unity; the Lord com-mands a blessing. TEAM.

You may be aware that the Government has introduced the Land Transport Amend-ment Bill to lower the adult driver breath alcohol limit. This Bill creates a new offence for drivers with a breath alcohol level between 251 and 400mcg per litre of breath. The blood alco-hol limit for this new offence is 50mg per 100ml of blood (0.05).The new limit will come into effect on De-cember 1. From then drivers detected with a breath alcohol level between 251-400mcg will receive a fine and 50 demerit points. Drivers who accumulate 100 demerit points for any offences within a two year period will receive a three month driver licence suspension. For drivers detected at over 400mcg of alcohol per litre of breath the existing criminal sanctions apply. This new law is great news for Police and the general public. Alcohol contributes to about 30 percent of fatal road crashes. In-ternational research shows that lowering the adult drink-driving limit will make a significant impact on reducing road deaths and injury. In New Zealand, we've seen a cultural change around drink-driving and the vast majority of people have got the message that it's not okay to drink and drive. Recent public surveys also indicate that the major-ity of people consider the current drink-driving limits to be too high.We all have to take responsibility for the decisions we make when we drive. My two bits of advice are: if you intend to drink al-ways organise a sober driver or a taxi to get home and; don't ever be shy about telling a friend you don't think they should drive.

Our lawn bowlers got the ball rolling with gold and bronze, and Jack Bauer completed the haul on his bike as Nel-son’s record contribution to the Com-monwealth Games was celebrated with six medals.New Zealand’s 45 medals made Glas-gow the country’s third most success-ful Commonwealth Games, and some of the most memorable moments were created or shared by Nelson’s ten-strong contingent.Jo Edwards, who won the women’s lawn bowls singles, led the way with Nelson’s only gold, while Tasman Mako Bryce Heem earned a silver in the rugby sev-ens, Motueka’s Shannon Francois was in the second-place Silver Ferns squad and Golden Bay’s Jack Bauer signed off with New Zealand’s 45th and last medal – a silver in the men’s road race.Amy Mcilory and Val Smith were part of the women’s four which finished

third place and secured a bronze medal in the lawn bowls, while Black Sticks speedster Anita Punt scored plenty of goals as her team finished third as well, adding to the silver she won in Delhi four years ago.Anita’s parents Adele and Nicky Punt made the trip to Glasgow, and say they have had an “amazing time” watching their daughter, after missing the chance in 2010. “We were both very proud when the girls stepped onto the podium to be presented with a bronze medal,” says Adele, via Glasgow. “It was disap-pointing that the medal was not gold, but on the day they achieved well. As a parent you feel for them when things don’t go to plan, as you know the sacri-

fice she and the others girls have had to make to represent their country.”Even though they didn’t come away with medals, bowler Shannon Mcilory, judoka Mark Brewer and 1500m run-ner Julian Matthews still proudly rep-resented their country, with Shannon finishing fourth in the men’s singles after his triples team were knocked out in the quarter finals, Mark reaching the quarter finals of men’s 81kg class, and Julian reaching the final in his first ma-jor international event.Julian was ninth in the final and de-spite a good start, he struggled to hold it. “There was a lot of pushing, a lot of shoving, Nick [Willis] nearly went down a few times which I was worried about, but no, it’s a big learning curve for me, obviously the biggest race of my life,” he says. “I’ll take a lot from it and learn and get better and hopefully next time give it a better shot.”

The Richmond Rabbits are back in the TRL final for the third year in a row, but for the first time it’s the Tahunanui Tigers they will have to get past in the decider.Having beaten the Stoke Cobras twice in the past two rugby league finals, the Rabbits now face a spirited Tigers team who clawed their way past the Cobras 26-22 in the semi-final on Saturday.Tigers chairman Paul Lafotanoa says it’s a special achievement for the club to be back in the final, and he believes they have every chance to get up over the Rabbits, who saw off the Victory Phoenix Vikings 32-14 in the other semi-final. “I think we’ve got every chance. The Rabbits are the form team, they’re unbeaten this year, but they’ve had a couple of close calls and I believe they’re beatable,” he says. “The Tigers will have to step up another level from their game against Stoke.”The only mark against Richmond’s per-fect record is a round-robin draw with the Cobras and their captain Hoani Takao is well aware that they will go into the game as the favourites. “I’d be lying if I said we didn’t feel any pres-sure. While we know the rest of the sea-son doesn’t matter now that we’re in the finals, we’re confident we can produce a good quality game and we just need to

string it all together on the day,” he says.Hoani believes the Tigers have been one of the toughest opponents they faced in the round robin stage and is expecting a physical encounter. “We played the Cobras in the past two finals so it shows the strength in the rugby league locally

to have another team in the final. We’re definitely preparing for a tough battle, that’s for sure.”The two teams will clash at Trafalgar Park this Saturday at 2:30pm. Entry is by gold coin donation and the final is an alcohol and smoke free event.

Fishing Nelson Dawnbreakers Fishing Club

with

The fishing around Nelson has been on the slow side for a while now with snapper moving to the deeper water over winter. There is still the odd big moocher hanging around for those keen enough to put the time in will get rewarded. Good gurnard can be found in Delaware Bay and out wide in Tas-man Bay now. Don’t forget to set your flounder net around the es-tuaries and inlets as good numbers are also showing up.Reports of Blue Cod appearing along the Boulder Bank shows that they are probably moving out of the marine reserve due to an in-crease in numbers and there have been a few takeable Brim caught in the same proximity.Scallops in Okiwi are in pretty good condition and in reasonably good numbers in Okiwi and Ketu Bays. While the season is still early the signs are good for the rest of the season as they put on some meat weight over the next month or so.Good size Blue Cod have been in abundance around D’urville and some nice snapper have been land-ed. Nile head has been producing 3-5lb snapper in deeper water. The Kingies are still about but can be a bit elusive at times and patience is required.

Last thing to remember is to get your boat serviced now before the spring rush as its only 8 weeks be-fore the snapper will be back. With the cold, wet and wintry days this is the perfect time to thor-oughly inspect and carry out some maintenance on your boat trailer. This will extend its life and help promote trouble-free boating.• Obvious items include checking tyre pressures; looking for signs of rust, wear and damage; checking and cleaning lights and reflectors regularly; and lubricating the tow coupling, winch bushes, gears and brake mechanisms.• Salt water and salt-laden air are a trailer’s biggest enemies, and even though your trailer is galvanised, corrosion can still occur. • Periodic washing down, drying and then spraying the leaf springs will help prolong their life.• Wheel bearings should be checked and regreased at least twice a year, and replaced if worn – a DIY task.Wash your trailer on a regular basis with a solution of warm water and detergent. The inside of the chassis and cross members can be cleaned out by putting a hose into the drain holes and flushing out. This will help ensure your trailer is set to go for the start of the season.

The Grade 1 matchup between the South Island Second-ary Schools Junior Champion Waimea 10A and Garin Col-lege was set to be an interesting one. In a match packed with U15 and U17 Nelson age group players it was tightly contested all the way - Waimea eventually taking the spoils 34-29.Basic errors committed by both sides saw the score go up and down like a yo-yo throughout.Waimea, coach Lisa Book, com-mended her whole team for the win. They stuck together through-out, and played as a unit un-til the final whistle. Accurate shooting from all parts of the circle by Amiee Book had her defenders at sixes and sevens. Even though the defenders had a difficult time containing Waimea’s offence, Garin coach, Sarah Rankin praised her circle defenders Kate Hand and Sa-rah Robinson, saying they im-proved throughout the game. They picked up vital ball to give their team the extra opportu-nities to mount a third quarter come back - going into the final stanza only one goal in arrears. Both coaches were impressed by their respective goal attacks Poppy Restieaux (Garin) and Demi Woolley (Waimea). high work rate on the centre pass received and through court play was outstanding, each shooter essentially playing a big part when in came to putting points on the scoresheet. Waimea’s wing defence, Riley McKendry disrupted Garin’s at-tack flow at every point, apply-ing pressure over her opposites. While the formidable defen-sive duo of Lauryn Davenhill and Louise Walker were on hand to pick off any loose play. Coach Book also said Brooke Matheson had a tidy game at wing attack for Waimea, using patience when required to feed her shooters accurately. For Garin, Makaila Powick was her usual industrious self, run-

ning all game at centre. A late change in the fourth quarter saw Poppy moved to wing at-tack, and Jess Brooks was intro-duced to combine with shooter Olivia Nott, in the hope the ball would flow more freely to the shooting circle. However, again basic errors cost Garin - with the turnovers converted at the other end by Amiee. With the 10A’s having com-pleted their tournament sched-ule for the season, and Garin looking to build into South Is-land Secondary Schools early September, both teams will be looking for improvement in their games to gain the results necessary to progress to a semi-final berth.
