Internet slow-down blamed on NetflixJacob Chandler

Slow internet speeds in parts of Nelson are being put down to a movie-streaming service, according to a national expert.TrueNet Broadband perform-ance expert, John Butt, says Nelson is experiencing a similar slow-down to many other parts of the country. He says he is putting this down to the recent uptake of Netflix in New Zealand after it was launched on March 24. Netflix allows subscribers to watch movies and television shows via the internet, clogging up the network.John says, nationally, Netflix could account for 25 per cent of all internet traffic, a huge

increase from nothing a month ago. “The ISPs [internet service providers] would have had to forecast that, for any ISP 25 per cent in traffic is a massive increase. I think the chances of knowing it would be 25 per cent would be very, very slim.”TrueNet has ten “probes” in Nelson which measure the percentage change in speed between the best and worst speeds. Two of those probes have dropped dramatically in speed over the past month, with one Nelson probe dropping from 100 per cent in March to 62 per cent in April.Richmond man Nick Rose uses Spark ADSL broadband and is experiencing a “quite limiting” connection.

He says Spark is blaming the reduced speed on its own Lightbox video service, which is similar to Netflix.“I did the speed check on the Spark site and it was ridiculously low. I gave them a ring and the lady then told me that between 8pm and 10pm lots of people were experiencing a slow-down due to the uptake of Lightbox and the network can’t cope with it.”Marleen Suy is one of the directors of Petes Lemonade in Kaka, Tapawera. She says she has always experienced slow broadband speeds in the area with speeds sometimes below what is expected with dial up. She says there is nothing that can be done by their ISP.

He says his wife’s handbag and car seats for his three kids were in the car. “I’m absolutely shattered,” he told Waimea Weekly at the scene.Police say it appears that the thieves had taken the stolen car on a big joy ride before setting it on fire. There were tyre marks around the riverbed and land surrounding the car.Police brought in a dog handler to

try and find any evidence but the fire had damaged the car so badly that there “wasn’t much” there.Richmond Volunteer Fire Brigade chief, Ralph Lonsdale, says the fires weren’t particularly difficult to put out because they were isolated, but the smoke was quite toxic and fire-fighters needed to take care.He says volunteer firefighters from Richmond and Appleby attended the fires. This story was first reported by nel-sonlive.co.nz

Stolen cars torched in Appleby River

It was Mother’s Day last Sunday so Waimea Weekly asked people on Queen St what they got their mums for the big day.

Jake Op den Buysch, Rich-mond.

“I got her a jug from Acquisi-tions that had an olive painted on it - her grandmother who just died was named Olive.”

AJ Southern, Richmond.

“I picked some flowers for her. I also said that I’d take her shopping.”

Mark Sommers, Mahana.

“I got her a little gift and then we went out for dinner at the Styx in Nelson.”

Amanda Radovanovich, Stoke.

“We did the Jennian Homes 5km walk which was fabulous. I also gave her a gift and went for lunch so I’m the favourite now.”

Ty Archibald’s long-awaited dream finally came true when he and his young family moved into their new home at Mahana last week. The 35-year-old builder, who has colorectal cancer, always wanted to build his family a home on his fourth generation family property in Mahana. However, building plans were put on hold when he was diag-nosed with his terminal illness in 2012. His friends and family rallied around to make his dream a re-ality, and raised funds through the Givealittle website and fun-

draisers. Local tradespeople and builders volunteered their time and local businesses pro-vided materials to make it hap-pen.Ty and his wife Nyssa wanted to thank everyone involved, and organised a celebration barbeque at their new home for all those people who had donated their time and materi-als to help build and landscape their new home.“It’s more than I could ever im-agine was possible. It exceeds our expectations, not just the house but how many people have supported us and helped us. Some weekends when we were landscaping there would

be up to 50 people here volun-teering. We didn’t need to ask people to help us at all, as soon as word got out they all just came. The hardest part of the whole project was saying ‘no thank you’, we didn’t need their help,” says Ty.Even though he is not well, Ty was in control of the building project until it’s completion, with builders running every-thing past him for his approval. His four-year-old twins, Dako-ta and Sienna, are very excited about their new house and also helped dad throughout the build.“I never thought it would be so good,” says Ty.

An evening fundraiser to cel-ebrate survivors of breast can-cer and to spread the word about how important it is for women to get regular mam-mograms will be held next week. Breast cancer survivor Mela-nie Horncastle, from Bright-water, decided to host the Pink Ribbon event to raise funds for the cause and to educate women about getting a regular mammogram. She is encour-aging everyone to come along, especially those who have a connection to breast cancer. A supper will be served at the Wanderers Rugby Club and the bar will be open during the evening. Goods donated by the local community will be raffled during the night with all funds raised going to the Pink Ribbon Foundation. In 2013, Melanie went for a regular mammogram and cancer was detected, she had a breast reduction and lumpec-tomy to remove it. In August last year, she was told the can-cer had returned and she went through a double mastectomy.“If I hadn’t gone for a regular mammogram, I wouldn’t have found it as I couldn’t feel the

cancer, it was only through having a digital mammogram that it was picked up. I want to spread the word that just be-cause you can’t feel it doesn’t mean its not there,” says Mela-nie.Around 3000 New Zealand women and 20 men are di-agnosed with breast cancer every year. Most will survive five years or longer if the can-cer is detected early enough but tragically, more than 600 women die of the disease in New Zealand every year.As well as community events, many smaller Pink Ribbon breakfasts will be held in our region over the week. Waimea

College student Smilla Todt and her mother Annett have organised a breakfast in their Richmond home in the kitch-en area that features a pink tap. Pink triple layered sponge cakes, cup cakes and pink sugar will be served to invited guests. The Pink Ribbon Supper will be held at the Wanderers Rug-by Clubrooms from 5pm to 9pm on Friday May 22, tick-ets cost $10 per person. If you would like to purchase a ticket or donate goods to be raffled on the night, please contact Melanie Horncastle on 542 3606 or Joanna Edwards on 540 3909.

Chris and Alex Chisnall at the Rainbow Snow Gear Sale on Saturday. There was barely room to breathe as hundreds of people flocked to Hampden St School for Rainbow’s annual sale. Last year saw a record sale and this year they managed to exceed that with just over $60,000 worth of ski gear sold. Rainbow Ski Area staff hope those numbers “will relate to what happens on the hill this year”. The proposed opening date for the ski area is Saturday July 4. The sale raised more than $9000. Habitat for Humanity Nelson will be building two three-bedroom houses in Kawai St, Nelson, at the end of this year. As a part of Habitat’s selection process to determine which families will get those houses, we will be holding an ”information sharing meeting” with the aim of informing interested people about the work of Habitat in Nelson. If you are interested in applying for a Habitat house, or would like to know more about Habitat for Humanity Nelson, then come along to Nelson MP Nick Smith’s electoral office, on the corner of Quarantine and Waimea Roads, on Sunday 24 May at 2pm.

Suburban Club: The Nelson Suburban Club has seen a 24 per cent rise in membership fig-ures since September 2014. General manager Rob Finlayson says “the key to a successful and sustainable club has always been in increasing our membership base and I’m really pleased with the steady growth we’ve achieved since September last year.” The increased member-ship numbers come on the back of a reported $221,000 profit for the 2014 financial year. This story was first reported by Nelson Live.

Heavenly road cone: A road cone has been placed on top of the flag pole at the top of the Cathedral’s tower. Reverend Nick Kirk says he was notified on Monday about the cone and be-lieves the tower was climbed externally. “I think they’ve gone up the outside which is obviously dangerous.” He says Cathedral staff are in dis-cussions about removing the cone. The story was first reported by Nelson Live.

Cliff strengthening: Around 220 rock an-chors, 1660m2 of ‘shotcrete’ and nearly 1400m2 of mesh will be used as part of strengthening work on the Rocks Rd cliff face over the next six months. NZ Transport Agency says areas of highest risk will be addressed first with a focus on stabilising the rock face. A secondary phase will aim at reducing the amount of material that falls onto the road, and reduce the risk of rock slides from bad weather conditions. The story was first reported by Nelson Live.

Tahuna tyre slasher: Police have been unable to track down Tahunanui’s car tyre slasher. Last week, several car owners had their car tyres slashed in both Muritai and Rawhiti Sts. Han-nah McColloch and her four flatmates woke to find two cars, parked side by side, slashed out-side their Rawhiti St property by the Tahunanui School courts. The story was first reported by Nelson Live.

Two Nelson women suffering from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome want to promote a better under-standing of the illness that affects an estimated 20,000 New Zea-landers.CFS or ME (Myalgic Encephalo-myelitis) as it is also known is a debilitating chronic illness char-acterised by profound fatigue that cannot be improved by rest and is often worsened by physical or mental activity. It has a num-ber of symptoms that includes weakness, muscle pain, impaired memory, mental concentration, sensory overload and insomnia, to name but a few.Although CFS sufferers Penny Sturrock of Richmond and Jas-mine Nicholson-Mooney of Spring Grove say the disease can make life misery, they “don’t want pity, just want understanding”. And that’s why they have cho-sen to talk to the Waimea Weekly about their illness as part of In-ternational ME Awareness Day on Tuesday. “A lot of people don’t understand the illness and say ‘you are just tired’ but that’s like saying a de-pressed person is just sad,” Jas-mine, who has suffered from ME

for 18 years, says. “The problem is that there is no real definitive diagnosis so there is a perception that it’s all in your head.“But it’s not psychological - it’s a very real illness. We want to help people understand that and for people who suffer from it to know they are not alone.”Penny, who was diagnosed with CFS eight years ago, says it has been “a life changing” disability

that some days has left her “so weak and fatigued, I couldn’t lift my head off the pillow.”“You feel exhaustion right to the bone and it can be so frustrating. I also have disrupted sleeps and unrelenting widespread muscle pain and stiffness.“I didn’t tell anyone I had it at the start because it’s an invisible ill-ness. “You look fine but you feel ter-

rible and that’s what people don’t always understand.”But Jasmine and Penny both say they have developed strategies for living with CFS including join-ing an online program run by a former CFS sufferer Toby Morri-son who has established the CFS Health Centre in Melbourne. They have learned numerous ap-proaches to manage their symp-toms but most importantly ways

to take control over their health and well-being through lifestyle changes and a strong sense of self awareness and mindfulness.Penny says she uses humour to get through the tough times and has learned to appreciate the small things. She has also taken up art which she finds therapeutic and has achieved her first goal of having her works exhibited including an industrial-style chair she painted titled Working on Recovery. Jasmine says it’s also important to remain positive and “focus on what you can do and not on what you can’t.”“If I’m feeling low, I’ll watch a funny movie or spend time with my kids,” Jasmine says. “If I can’t physically get off the couch, I can still blow bubbles for the kids and play with them.”Penny and Jasmine also say they are fortunate to have supportive families and friends. A “good doctor who understands it and knows that it is not just in your head” is also critical.“People who suffer from CFS need plenty of support,” Penny says. “If you know someone with it, you should try to help them.”For more information on CFS see the websites http://www.cf-shealth.com/ anzmes.org.nz or cfshealth.com

Check out our new look!

The world-famous Britten bike had its insides revealed on Monday night at an event which drew technical junkies and Britten fans alike to NZ Classic Motorcycles. Manager John Shand says, after a surprise reveal in March there had been a lot more interest in the bike. “There were a hell of a lot at the reveal. When we pulled the cover off you could hear the air being sucked out of the room,” Monday evening featured talks

about John Britten’s life from his widow, Kirsteen Britten, as well as a demonstration of the inner workings of the bike by Nelson man Jason Monopoli, a member of the engineering team that built the bike. “It was a garagey evening, a world first, the top had never been taken off the bike in public,” John says. Jason says looking under the bodywork lets people witness a sight not commonly seen outside the pit area. “It’s a side of Britten that people

don’t get to see. We did some pretty revolutionary stuff as far as construction. I spoke about why certain things were done and how they were done.” Jason ran the composites for most of his time working for Britten. He made the chassis, wheels and bodywork for the bike “We did some pretty outlandish things, I guess. We had carbon fibre which we were using in totally new ways, really pushing the boundaries. We were just forging ahead in the dark.”

with Jessie JohnstonLocals off to Nepal, Wednesday, April 29: The locals off to Nepal this month are thrilled with the quiz night they hosted on May 7. With just over 50 people in attendance the event not only raised much-needed funds for the rebuild of Nepal after the earthquake, but raised aware-ness for the cause locally. There were also a cou-ple of generous donations made on the night. Their original objective was to build a school in a remote village but with earthquake damage a priority it looked like the project would be put on hold. Those going on the trip are pleased to say that the construction of the school will still be possible and they will be leaving for Nepal on May 24.

Looking for Nelson’s smartest, Wednesday May 6: Judith Tuckwell was overjoyed when two other Nelson Mensans came forward after reading the Waimea Weekly article last week, effectively doubling the number of Mensa members in the region. Judith says she had no idea there were other Mensans in Nelson be-cause they were not on her records. There has also been more interest coming through from the Mensa website with around five people gearing up to test their fluid intelligence for a chance to join the high IQ society.

Waimea College pop band Goldthorpe will be hoping that making their Smokefreerockquest debut at the Theatre Royal on Sat-urday will be one of the best things they ever do.Goldthorpe is one of 20 bands and 18 solo or duo performers that will take the stage in the Nelson heats of the nationwide, live, all original, youth music competition. The Nelson performers are joining 3000 students entered in this year’s Smokefreerockquest that will be held over the next three months in 24 towns from Invercargill to Kerikeri.Although Goldthorpe has already had a dress rehearsal, perform-ing on stage at school assembly, drummer Sophie Tasker says they are still feeling apprehensive about making their Smokefreerockquest debut. “We performed at assembly a couple of weeks ago to get used to it,” Sophie says. “But I stuffed up - I ended too early.“We’re really, really nervous about it but it’s a good opportunity to put

yourself out there and perform.”The band’s singer Rebecca Rea says they have written one original song for the Nelson heat and are working on a second. Lydia Dunne plays the viola and Zeke Smith plays sax, with Caleb Jones on bass for the year 10 group who got together after becoming friends in their music class this year. Waimea College also has bands Equilibrium, Escape Artists, UnKnown, Nocturnal Avenue, Quantum Shadow, Toxic Vain and DEMM in the heats, while Garin College has Vanguard and Lat-eral. Solo or duo performers Daisy Penfold, Tegen and Maia Holmes are from Waimea while The Gib-son Girls are from Murchison and Corrupt Innocence is from Garin College. The top 10 bands and two solo or duos at Saturday’s heats which start at 6pm will go through to the Nelson regional final at Theatre Royal on Friday May 22. Tickets cost $10 at the door.

Tapawera Area School junior students will have toasty warm feet this coming winter thanks to the knitting skills of the Tapawera Spinners and Craft Group. Creative Fibre is the New Zealand organisation for all fi-bre crafts. At their National Fibre Council meeting held in Dunedin last month, it was decided that members would take on the project of knitting woollen slippers to keep children’s feet warm in classrooms. All over New Zealand local fibre groups started knitting for their local communi-ties. The Tapawera group, got on board to knit a few pairs of slippers with the idea of dropping them off at the local schools including Dovedale, Tapawera and Lake Rotoiti. The slippers have been so popular that twenty members have now knitted 120 pairs.

Trafalgar Centre open in February:It makes me laugh. Nelson and the region have historic old

buildings that tourists take pictures of, and the council just let them rot, yet this eyesore of a building which is obscenely ugly is having more millions spent of it, what a waste! Brian Gower.

Nice white elephant. What a balls-up this all was!!! Good on

ya, NCC. Janelle Thorpe.

Will the Giants be playing there or still at Saxton?

Tyler Mcconchie.

Can't really understand why it was closed down in the first

place. Jenny Cunningham.

Broken ankle on courtesy crossing:It is obvious that they are cour-tesy crossings not pedestrian

crossings. Many times I see pedestrians just walk out without looking; expecting traffic to stop. It does not take much to acknowledge the traffic by making eye contact and at times I have waved them on because I want them to keep go-ing, but they stop anyway. So a friendly thank you wave in return ensures eve-ryone is safe. Maybe signs would help, but courtesy means just that – we are too “over-signed” now! People don’t have to think anymore about their driv-ing or road behaviour. Margie Silich.

Signs for Nelson, too! Or take the bloody things away.

Nancy Holden.

They are so dangerous - espe-cially in Nelson where you are

trying to negotiate you way around a corner and wham.. someone has walked out and you have to remain in the mid-dle of the road - stuck. Crazy system here. Nickie Sue.

Makes no difference, people will tell you that crossing rules don't

apply, especially if it's a raised crossing. Eric Watts.

Pedestrians take it as their right to cross with head half-down on

cell phone, not watching. Sue Sara.

Pedestrians need more educat-ing on how to use these cross-

ings. John Sauer.

Signs would be a good start, and painted on the crossing itself

(as they are in Hanmer Springs) to let pedestrians know that they should give way. Tania Preston Brunell.

In Hanmer, the pedestrians have to give way. I love the courtesy

crossings because, as a taxi driver and having paying customers, I can nudge my way onto them and carry on, but a pedestrian crossing I have to stop and

give way. In Nelson it's bad, the pe-destrians don't care if you have paying customers, they just keep walking out. I have had customers get out and tell peo-ple how ignorant they are. Garry Smith.

Don't walk out in front of mov-ing cars, treat it like you are

crossing the road because that's what you are doing, common sense really. People need to stop trying to bubble wrap everything it's a joke. Glenn Taylor.

There are so many tourists and newcomers here in Nelson who

don't understand these crossings. I didn't when I moved here, they don't look like your average pedestrian cross-ing. Donna Jan.

Smiley Cindi brightens up road works:My husband told me about her then we passed her the other day

and she's as smiley and wavy as he had told me! Made our day. Elaine Lourens.

So cool to see a nice smiley face and a wave, instead of grumpy

looking guys, doing this thankless job. Penny King.

She's bloody good value, great effort. Matthew Allsopp.

Brightened my day on my way to work. Pauline Bishell.

Nelson Live has a new way to zip about town and collect the latest news and information – a bright red (and quite sexy) Vespa. The Vespa was bought from Filco Farm and Sport and has certainly got a lot of attention since it started whizzing around Nelson and Tasman roads at the start of April.Nelson Live’s Steve Page says he’s been riding the Vespa all over town and he’s been getting plenty of great comments.

“People love it. I had a Harley until re-cently and I get more comments about the Vesper than I ever did about the Harley, it’s quite hard case.”The Vespa adds to the Nelson Live fleet of vehicles which drive its dedicated journalists around town, covering the latest news and events. If you have a news story or tip, let Nelson Live know and you could win $50 cash. Jude Saxon, youth pastor at Richmond New Life

What are you seeking? So much of life seems to be based around this question - career, friends, family, leisure, and where we live etc. This question could also be translated, what purpose do you have? How can we make such decisions that posi-tively influence such a question when we, our-selves can not determine every future conse-quence of our decisions. If this is the case how can we know our pur-pose, or even be sure we can achieve our found purpose?I believe the key to discovering why we are on this planet, why we are alive, and what our purpose is, begins in knowing God. The Bi-ble describes God as “greater than our heart, and he knows everything” (1 John 3:20), so he must have some idea about our purpose. In fact, God says “I know the plans I have for you” (Jeremiah 29:11). Therefore, as I endeav-our to live my life with some sort of structure, direction, and purpose it only seems logical to consider God.However, this only answers the question of “What is my purpose?” Not “How do I get there?” Proverbs 16:9 tells us “The heart of man plans his way,but the Lord establishes his steps”. Thus suggesting that God plays more of a part in our life than just the odd prayer to make sure we are on the right track. John 1:37-39 outlines an ordering of steps “The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them fol-lowing and said to them, “What are you seek-ing?” And they said to him, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” He said to them, “Come and you will see.” So they came and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day, for it was about the tenth hour.”What we learn from these two men is that they simply wanted to go to where Jesus was staying, to spend time with Jesus, and to gain insight into who Jesus was and what he was about. They were coming to spend quality time with Him to listen and learn. We can learn from these men what it means to seek Jesus and have him order our steps. Seek-ing is more than just saying a prayer or one day a week in a church it is allowing Jesus to walk with us in our journey of life.

Just a thought...

HOW DO I FIND OUT WHAT DAY MY BIN WILL BE EMPTIED?Each recycling bin is assigned to a specific street address. The collection day is written on the sticker – this is the day for both rubbish and recycling collections. So, for example, if it says “Tue” then your collection day for weekly rubbish bags is Tuesday. It also means that your fortnightly recycling collection will be on a Tuesday. The number after your day indicates whether your recycling will be collected on Week 1 or Week 2.

WHAT GOES IN YOUR BAGS?

GlassOnly recycle empty, unbroken glass bottles and jars (clear, brown, blue and green). Most residents will already have a blue recycling crate that they can use for glass recycling. If you don’t have one, contact your local Council office.

LandfillIf it can’t be recycled, reused or composted it needs to go in the landfill. If you want to reduce what goes to landfill, you can recycle more, and compost your food and garden waste. The Council offers a $20 discount on compost bins at participating retailers (search ‘composting’ at www.tasman.govt.nz).Remember to wrap sharp objects like broken glass. Donna and Greg Witika, owners of Wairua Body Coaching Systems, presenting funds raised at the Wairua Mud Rookies Race held in Nelson last month to Harold the Giraffe from the Life Education Trust and Special Olympian, Sean Tremlett. Photo: Monique Bergman.

Funds raised from the inaugural Wairua Warrior obstacle race held last month have been donated back into the community. The event, held at Happy Valley Adven-tures in Cable Bay, saw people of all fit-ness levels competing in a six kilometre or 12 kilometre obstacle course. Donna and Greg Witika from Nelson’s Wairua Body Coaching Systems organised the event, to-gether with members of the Wairua Mud Rookies. The group wanted to give some-thing back to the community and present-ed a cheque for $2,500 to the Nelson Life Education Community Trust last week.

The Witika’s chose the charity because they have seen first hand the impact that the Nelson Life Education Trust has on children within primary and intermediate schools. “It is great being able to support a charity for kids, we have seen Harold the Giraffe in the school over the years as we have children,” says Donna.Established in Nelson over 12 years ago, the Life Education Community Trust is a non-profit organisation that provides pri-mary and intermediate school children with knowledge about health and their bodies, helps develop self-esteem, and as-

sists students with developing strategies for relating to others. The programmes take children on an adventure in a mobile classroom equipped with sight and sound, designed to make the journey fun as well as educational, with Harold the Giraffe as mascot. The trust educated 5299 students last year in Nelson and they are highly depend-ent on funding and support from local sponsors. “Life Education is all about the kids, health and nutrition, it is great to be involved with Wairua Warrior as it pro-motes living a healthy lifestyle. We really

appreciate their financial support, the pro-gramme’s operating costs alone are $17 per child and only $4 out of that is supplied by the schools and parents, so we need to find the remaining funds,” says Michelle Fitzgerald, chair of the trust. In addition to this, the group also pre-sented a $500 cheque to Sean Tremlett, who suffers from chronic epilepsy. He will represent New Zealand in basketball at the Special Olympics to be held in the USA in July. The Witikas say they would like to see the Wairua Warrior event get even bigger next year.

The winter season is now upon us and if you have finished your fish-ing for the year there are some basic things you should be doing to pro-tect your prized possessions for the next few months. If you are not me-chanically-minded, the safest thing to do is take your boat to the experts and get them to perform a winteri-zation routine on the engine, steer-ing, and electrical components, and a once-over of the boat and trailer to ensure they are both safe and sound. There are things, however, that you can look at yourself that don’t re-quire you to be a boat mechanic. Remove squabs and lifejackets to dry storage. Squabs and lifejackets should be washed in fresh water before being stored, as salt deposits will stop them drying out fully and cause mould and mildew to form.Take gadgets, fishing tackle, rods and reels, indoors to prevent theft. This is especially important if you store your boat on the street or a driveway. Check the expiry date of your flare kits and top up the first aid kit as necessary. Check torches, spot-lights, cookers, toilets, anchor rope and chain are still in good working order. Check electrical connections for corrosion. Replace any corroded connections, and cover all con-nections with a corrosion inhibi-tor (CRC Lanocote works well) to prevent further damage. Make sure the bilge pumps work. Clean out any ‘gunk’ from strainers and float switches if fitted, and make sure your bilge pump works well, and your batteries can keep up. Turn off your main battery switch to prevent drain-down, or remove batteries from your boat completely. Make sure you keep your batteries charged – they will lose charge gradually, even when not in use, which will

reduce battery lifespan significantly. Remove trailer rust. A quick scrub with a Scotch-brite or wire brush should remove surface rust. While you’re checking for rust, have a look for any loose fittings, particularly on alloy boats, to help prevent rust stains and corrosion caused by dis-similar metals. Apply a rust-killing product where minor corrosion does appear. Check the wheel bear-ings and bearing buddies, but don’t overfill them with grease. Check the lights all work, the winch strap is not frayed and that the trailer brakes are working ok. A good idea is to put the boat in the water and give the trailer a thorough once over, as it is much easier to also check the rollers and inside the box framing of the trailer for rust without the boat on it.The last thing your boat probably needs is a thorough clean inside and out. Removing absolutely every-thing off the boat enables you to see the state of all your gear and clean it, throw it out or replace as necessary. Finally, cover it up. A good boat cover will help protect your boat from the weather over winter, not to mention the prying eyes of would-be thieves.

Fifty years of successful business is a milestone to be proud of and one that Woody Woodford celebrated with friends and family at The Stables last month; offering a chance to look back at the beginnings of Waimea Drilling and how it has grown into the respect-ed, reputable business we know today. Around 63 years ago, Woody, then a Waimea-based crop farmer, was searching for water on his father’s farm. The Waimea Plains of Rich-mond, Nelson, during the early 1950s saw some of the first irrigation systems installed to combat the drought con-ditions being experienced then. Natu-rally the dairy farmers and vegetable market gardeners started irrigating by pumping water from existing rivers, creeks and ponds that could sustain a reasonable amount of the activity. It was not long before shallow wells were being dug in the river flat grav-els to obtain more irrigation supplies. Knowledge of the presence of water below the ground was already estab-lished by the many domestic water supplies having been found by hand

digging a well or by simply driving down a 50mm diameter pipe which was perforated at the bottom. The obvious benefits of irri-gation obtained by some soon

attracted the attention of farmers on the higher ground of the Waimea Plains. The higher ground has a very different formation to that of the river flats and is notable by its land slope towards the sea of some 7.62 meters per mile, compared to the river flats of some 3.81 meters per mile. The Aniseed Valley Rd area of Hope on this higher ground was where the deep-est hand dug wells for irrigation were constructed. Spencer Woodford, having had prior experience with sinking shafts in search of gold in the Murchison area, had no problems with the depth that some of these wells were dug to. Being his son, Woody end-ed up hand digging to the deepest depth of 20.1 metres. These wells started off with wooden boxing being assembled and lowered as the well was dug. A successful well would usually be lined with one metre diameter concrete pipes. Just as you might expect, these deeper wells pro-vided diggers with many problems. De-watering the well, with a pump designed to pump water from the sur-face during digging, was one of them.

On one occasion, Woody recalls, a petrol powered pump was lowered down a deeper well to get it closer to the water. After a short time of opera-tion, the digging man at the bottom

had to be assisted to the top before he suf-focated. A solution to the problem saw 40 feet of steel pipe con-nected to the exhaust of the motor which made good progress until the digger sunk his pick into what be the first of the upper aquifer at around 15 metres in depth and once again, after a sudden rise in the water level, had to be rescued to avoid drowning. Others in the area also risked their lives, hastily digging for water. Another story Woody remembers

took place in one of the wells on the north side of the Aniseed Valley Rd. When digging in the well had pro-gressed to about 10 metres, the hand winch (Windlass) assembly fell down on top of the unlucky digger below, al-though he was very lucky not to have been killed. In the same well a differ-ent digger was working on an area be-low the concrete liners and in his ex-citement at having found a stream of

water entering the side of the well, decided to dig out sideways to encourage it into the well. One smoko time, he had come up for a coffee and was not long out of the well when there was a crash and a rumble and some ten tons of concrete lin-ers slipped down the well, closing off the side channel he had been digging. About this time a cable operated well digging machine was available and used approximately one metre diameter concrete liners for well cas-ing. A successful tool for shallow wells but very limited on the deeper wells. Most of these wells were deepened at a later date by a cable tool drill-ing rig using steel casing and well screens. The first of these drilling rigs, of considerable size, came from the southern region of the country, having been drilling at dam sites such as Ben-more in Canterbury. As Woody recalls, Taylors Drilling and Supply were the first to both deepen some of the older wells and drill some new ones. Other drilling contractors to visit the area dur-ing the 1950s and 1960s were Conway and Sim-monds (AJ Simmonds Ltd), AM Bisley, Avon Drilling Co and Gore Drilling Co. AJ Simmonds Ltd became a resident drilling company in the Waimea Plains in the early 60s and drilled some of the first larger diameter deep wells for irriga-

tion. In 1965 Woody purchased a ‘Star’ drilling rig and the larger diameter well drilling equip-ment from Alec Simmonds and formed Waimea Drilling Co Ltd. The first well to be drilled by Waimea Drilling was 200mm diameter by 30 metres deep on Ross Nicholl’s property at Main Rd Hope. This well was fitted with one of the first deep well line shaft irrigation pumps in the area and has operated successfully for many years.Waimea Drilling spent a lot of time in the late 60s drilling irrigation wells in the Motueka area for the tobacco, apple and hop growers, along with many wells in the Waimea area for dairy farmers, mixed farming, market gardeners, and apple and hop growers. “In November 1969 Waimea Drilling Company Ltd, ventured over the hill to Blenheim to drill a well for Mr K. O’Sullivan in the Dillons Point/Swamp Road area. From that time on Waimea Drilling established themselves as one of the regulars in the drilling business in Marlborough. His knowledge of drilling in this fickle terrain was important in the successful drilling of what remains the deepest water well yet constructed in Marlborough. “They drilled most of the deeper irrigation wells in the Southern Valleys Aquifers from the early

1970s through until the turn of the century in 2000. Also, many of the test or exploratory wells commissioned by the Marlborough District Council required their larger capability equip-ment compared to other drillers of the same era. While they continue to drill the occasional well in Marlborough particularly for Wither Hills Wines Ltd and other long term clients; it is fair to say they are not nearly as active as in their heyday of the 1980s. “One outstanding feature of the presence of Waimea Drilling Co. Ltd was their preparation of detailed well logs describing the underground strata and groundwater properties. WDC recog-nised the importance of keeping good records, and providing copies for the Council archive, not only for successful wells, but dry ones too. This represents a significant legacy for future generations. Much of what the Marlborough

District Council and the local community now knows about local aquifers is based on the infor-mation gathered through the drilling and well testing activities of Woody.” Peter Davidson, Marlborough District Council. Waimea Drilling is now Nelson’s leading water well drilling company, offering a comprehensive range of services including excavation, explora-tion, the design and construction of top quality water supply wells and the installation and ser-vicing of submersible pumps. A reliable and safe water supply is vital for our day to day lives and whether you need a water source for your home, business or bach, it pays to call in the experts. Today there are over 6500 wells logged with Waimea Drilling around the Nelson/Tasman region and even the Blenheim region. The com-pany has a detailed knowledge of piezometers and investigative drilling, including down bore

Waimea Drilling in action in Linkwater, Marlborough. This is the first drilling job of their sixth decade in business! They have enjoyed many drilling projects all over the top of the South Island. In fact, they have over 6500 wells logged in their records.

flow rates, plus, Woody’s extensive knowledge of local water sources means they can tell you how far down the drilling needs to go; it’s this high level of expertise which makes the company sought after says Woody. Waimea Drilling can help clients with the whole process when it comes to water wells, from the test pumping of wells and pre-paring information for engineers to supply to local council in support of an irrigation water application, to the finished job. Waimea Drilling are proud to say they have a pretty good relationship with those in the community too. Waimea Drillings consistent ap-proach to the installation and ser-vicing of water wells has seen them stand the test of time and they will no doubt continue to work hard to meet their client’s water supply needs successfully into the future. Woody would like to make a special mention of these people for their support over Waimea Drillings 50 years. Brendan Higgins – present head driller of WDC, Steve Pilch-er - past head driller of WDC, Dr Michael Johnston - Nelson resident geologist for the DSIR, Michael Dicker - hydrologist for the Nel-son Catchment Board and Dave Mcgowan - hydrologist for the Nel-son Catchment Board.

Brendon Higgins is Woody’s right hand man. With a me-chanical background, Brendon has been with Waimea Drilling for 13 years.

The Hope Community Church will be showing that is more blessed to give than to receive when it holds its fourth Hopefest Big Share Fair on Saturday. The Big Share Fair is the opening event of the week-long Hopefest which starts on Saturday and will feature a series of free activities and seminars at the church on Ranzau Rd. Thousands of items will be giv-en away during Saturday’s Big Share Fair which senior pastor Donald Ir-vine says is always the highlight of Hopefest. The church started Hopefest in 2008 as a way to celebrate its first birth-day and Donald says it’s a nice way for them to give back to the com-munity. The church’s “family” have donated most of the items which will be purchased using Hope Notes handed out for free at the door. Hopefest will also include a charity

quiz night on Friday May 22 when the winners will give $1000 in prize money to the Nelson Tasman Hos-pice, Nelson-Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, St John, Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Red Cross Refugee Services. Donald says the three seminars cover a range of topics, including dealing with anxiety and stress and the challenges of living in the digi-tal age. The seminars are also free and will be held next week from May 19-21 starting at 7.30pm, with no booking required.A concert with Elvis impersonator Mark Borg will be held on Saturday May 23. Hopefest concludes with a Sunday morning church service on May 24 with guest speaker Jim Hickey. Tasman swimmers competed against the fastest young swimmers in the country at the National Age Group Swimming Championships last week.Over 540 swimmers converged on Wel-lington for five days of tough competi-tion. It was a very successful meet for the Tasman Swim Club taking home six gold medals, two silver and two bronze over the course of the competition. “When compared with last year’s event,

the kids stepped up beautifully. They did a great job all round, they really did im-prove, rankings were better and their pro-cesses were a lot more professional. I am very proud of them,” says Tasman Swim School head coach, Andy Adair.Sam McKenzie won four gold medals at the meet and broke his own New Zealand age group record for the 100m freestyle race with a new time of 51.93 seconds. He also won the 50m, 200m and 400m free-

style races with impressive times.Caitlin Delany won gold in a very tight race in the 16-year-old girls 100m breaststroke event with a time of 1:15.29 and Thomas Heaton performed well winning gold in the 1500m freestyle event with 16:11.50.

“The young ones just grew in confidence during the competition. There are around 40 kids in each lane warming up and the kids did their job which is critical in terms of their own processes, they made a great deal of progress in handling big swim meets like that. Young Cassie Hagan reached the final in her event which was a great improvement all round, she is there in the pool all the time and works her heart out and achieved,” says Andy.

CYCLING: Tasman Wheelers riders had a big weekend with M7 rider Karl Van Hoppe win-ning the John Machejefski Handicap in Hokiti-ka and Niamh Fisher-Black finishing second in the junior 17 women’s Tour of Canberra. Karen Fulton retained the leader’s jersey while Robin Reid is fourth in the elite men’s after the third round of the Calder Stewart Cycling Series at Hokitika on Saturday.

HARRIERS: The Waimea Harrier Club com-bines with Athletics Nelson for a pack run this Saturday. Meet at the Washbourn Gardens for a 2.30pm start. Runners and walkers of all abili-ties are welcome.

ORIENTEERING: The Nelson Orienteering Club is holding an event on its popular Maitai course this Sunday. Competitors can start between 10.30am and 12.30pm. Start will be signposted from the intersection of Nile St and Maitai Valley Rd. All welcome.

FOOTBALL: Richmond Athletic are through to the next round of the Chatham Cup after a strong 3-1 win over FC Nelson at Jubilee Park on Sunday.

Wanderers Wolves fullback Bryce Taylor may have scored two tries and kicked two goals and the match-winning field goal against the Anchor Engineering Tahu-nanui Tigers on Saturday but all he has been hearing about this week is “the dive”. And that’s hardly surprising with Shuttersport photographer Chris Symes’ shot showing Bryce get-ting some very serious air time as he flew across the line for his first half try. “I didn’t want anyone to catch me so I just dived for the corner,” Bryce says. “I just wanted to go for it.”Although Bryce says he has been getting lots of positive feedback about the dive, he is expecting a bit of stick from his team-mates at training this week. “It’s been all over Facebook and got quite a few Likes. All the guys were positive about it after the game and they’re stoked it made the head-lines although it will probably be very different at training.Bryce says he was already been getting a hard time from his team-mates anyway because, up until Saturday, he was “just about the only back who hadn’t scored a try this season”. Saturday’s game was also the first time Bryce has kicked a field goal since he started playing rugby league last season.“I got the ball about 20 metres out and someone yelled at me ‘go for

it’. I didn’t know whether he meant run or kick a field goal so I kicked and it went over. - it was a great ef-fort by the whole team to win.” Bryce scored again in the second half to help Wanderers record a 29-28 win at Lord Rutherford Park to retain their unbeaten record in the Tasman Rugby League senior club competition. Wanderers play Victory Phoenix at Brightwater Domain at 2:30pm this Saturday while Tahunanui Tigers play the Richmond Rabbits at the Tahunanui Domain.

Hope Community Church

The Hope Community Church will be giving away more than just material goods at the bi-ennial Hopefest which gets underway with the Big Share Fair this Saturday. The Big Share Fair is the opening event of the week-long Hopefest and pastor Donald Irvine says they have thousands of items ready to give away to the community. But there will also be plenty of free advice and wisdom given away during Hopefest with three topical seminars planned for next week. The first seminar, Anxiety and Stress - don’t worry about it any longer, will be presented by Jaap and Wilma Noteboom at the church on Tuesday May 19 starting at 7.30pm. It will be a comprehensive look at the ins and outs of anxiety and stress, our emotional and physical response, and, more importantly, how to deal with it.Jaap and Wilma are also presenting the sec-ond seminar, titled It’s All About the Family on Wednesday May 20. It starts at 7.30pm and looks at what parents should know about brain development, ages and stages, teenagers, and healthy relationships.Dorothy Burt presents the third seminar, Chal-lenges of Living in the Digital Age, on Thurs-day May 21 starting at 7.30pm. She will talk about smart kids with their smart devices and up-skilling parents and grandparents in digital technology.

All the seminars are free with no booking re-quired. Hopefest will also include a charity quiz night on Friday May 22 when the winners will get to give a total prize pool of $3000, donated by the church, to the Nelson Tasman Hospice, Nelson-Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, St John, Big Brothers, Big Sisters and Red Cross Refugee Services. “We’ve turned a conventional quiz night around and the first five teams give their prize money away to the charities instead of keeping it them-selves,” Donald says.A concert with Elvis impersonator Mark Borg, with local supporting artists will be held on Sat-urday May 23. Hopefest concludes with a Sunday morning church service on May 24 with guest speaker Jim Hickey. Donald says the former television weather presenter “encountered God in a mi-raculous way” and will be a big attraction. For more information on Hopefest go to the website hopefest.co.nz or phone the church on 544 6628.

Nelson Netball tipped off their 2015 sea-son at Saxton Stadium on Saturday, with early indications being that the Grade 1 competition is set to be a closely-fought encounter. The draw is a seeded one, and it was only the club derby between top and bottom seeds Jacks Navy and Jacks Silver which created the biggest margin of the day, 40-28. It will be interesting to see how the re-maining six teams, all College teams, de-velop throughout the season, as it is likely

that they have not had a long preparation for the competition.Nelson College for Girls Senior B sneaked passed Suburban Blue 31-30, while the 10A’s defeated Rival Blue Diamonds 35–33.Waimea College 10A were quick out of the blocks in their match up against Nayland College A, with dynamic centre Jess Kelly to the fore. She played a strong defensive game, at times took difficult ball through the mid court, and it was pleasing to see her look long to her shooters and deliver precision feeds. Waimea played their best netball in the first stanza when they outscored Nayland

8–4. The three remaining quarters were all drawn to bring the final score to 23–19.Harriet Ogilvie was a revelation at goal at-tack as she slotted a number of long-range shots, so good to see a young player pre-pared to attempt them. Bailee Tava worked the circle well with Harriet, and was prepared to venture out-side the shooting circle to offer a different option. Sheree Peters proved to be a wor-thy replacement at goal shoot in the final quarter when she converted four from four.Grace Young worked hard at wing attack to deliver quality ball to her shooters, while

circle defenders Maddi Springer and Alex Bloomberg toiled throughout. Nayland did not seem to gel as well, as they appeared to struggle with numerous posi-tional changes. Nicole Whiting worked hard at centre to contain Waimea’s play-maker Jess Kelly. Taylah Kirker is a valu-able asset on court in whatever position she plays and was sorely missed when she was substituted as she, too, looks long and directs play well.Once she found her rhythm, Tayler Bo-eyen was the most accurate shooter as she returned a commendable 75 per cent goal average.

Star and Garter Waimea Old Boys remained unbeaten in the Tasman Trophy senior club rugby competition after defeating Waitohi 71-31 at Endeavour Park in Picton last Sat-urday.Waimea scored 11 tries, including a hat-trick to flanker Sam Winsloe, on the way to re-cording its eighth win of the season. It was particularly impressive at the break down where it secured a steady stream of quality go-forward ball and turn overs. “We have been working hard on that area all season,” says Waimea’s assistant coach Nick Marquet. “We identified it as something we haven’t al-ways been good at, so we were very happy with the improvement we are showing.” However, Nick says it wasn’t a perfect per-formance with their biggest concern being a

leaky defence that conceded four second half tries. “We were ahead 31-3 at half time, so we loosened up a lot in the second half which was a little disappointing,” Nick says. “It’s something we’ll need to look at but that sometimes happens in high scoring games - guys get a bit fatigued and start falling off tackles.”Nick says they will not be able to afford any defensive lapses this Saturday when they play a strong Harlequins side at Lansdowne park in Blenheim.“Harlequins will give us a good gauge of where we are at. It will be another good chal-lenge for the boys and we’ll have to be on our game to win.”Waimea leads the Tasman Trophy on 39 points after eight games, with Central sec-ond on 31 points and Wanderers in third on 28.

Waimea Old Boys’ senior B squad will head to Murchison on Saturday know-ing its position at the top of the table will mean nothing to the hosts.Waimea held off a strong come-back from Huia on Saturday to secure a 23-19 win. That makes it three wins from as many games in the second round of the Car Company Nelson Bays division two club competition. But coach Wayne Bateman says Mur-chison are a tough team at the best of times and even harder when playing on their home pitch.“I hear they’re a young squad but down there mate, anything can happen.”Wayne says Waimea’s win on Saturday was a solid work-out with Huia making a

late play for the win. “They scored first but we came back well to led 15-7 at half time. We scored again after half time and really had the game in control but they came back, scored two tries and we just held on.”This season the team has a big squad to draw on which is a huge asset, says Wayne. “We’ve had five Tongan fruit pick-ers playing for us but I’ve already lost two and three are going soon, but we have plenty of cover.”He says defensively he’s happy with the team’s performance but is urging his play-ers to show some more patience. “We need to stop throwing silly passes but in saying that we played against a really good Huia team.”Waimea play Murchison this Saturday with kick off at 1.15pm.

School Chaplaincy has been around for a long time but has grown in the last five to ten years. There are eight schools in the Nelson area that have a chaplain already with others interested. Life Walk Trust

is the national organisation that oversees school chaplaincy in New Zealand. Local branches have a co-ordinator to liaise with schools, select and help train prospective chaplains to enable them to work at a selected school. A chaplain contracts with the school for four hours of voluntary work per week. All chaplains have differing skills and abilities and their involvement in the school will be to the extent that the school wishes to make use of that person’s gifts and skills. A chaplain’s main role is to contribute to the pastoral care of the school community. This can take on different forms, from running short courses on bereavement to working through conflicts and issues on a one to one basis, depending on the chaplain’s abilities.

Building relationships with the children and staff is very important as you can’t expect them to confide in you unless they know and trust you. I find going into the classrooms, seeing the children’s work and where appropriate helping them with it, helps to get to know the children and staff better. As I am only in the school for one morning a week I have set up a box for children who wish to talk with me, to place their names in. This way I can help the children on arrival at school. Many of the problems are to do with

falling out with friends but at times there are deeper problems that arise. These deeper issues often require the help of the school principal or others. The chaplain has access to appropriate outside agencies.

Chaplains meet several times a year for further training and encouragement.

- Malcolm Irvine, Chaplain, Wakefield Primary School

What are school chaplains for?

Love in actionOn Saturday July 4 the Richmond Waimea churches will be working together to help in a variety of community based projects all happening on the same day. Volunteers from the different churches will be doing the work. It is simple plan to show God’s love to all. We hope you feel the love.

Thank youWe are grateful to all the volunteers who help in our community. This month’s page shares some stories but you will know others. This week, let’s all thank a volunteer for being so generous with their time.

Every community has their three letter acronyms. One used in Anglican churches is AAW. But what is it? AAW is an Association of Anglican Women. It is not only New Zealand-wide but also covers parts of the Pacific. It has twin aims. The first is to unite in prayer and further God’s work in the church and the world. The second aim is to nurture and support families and each other.

We enjoy the friendship we have together. We also have interesting speakers and activities as part of our meetings. We welcome all women and if you would like to come along and spend an hour or two contact the church office to find out the details.

I’m off to AAW

Speed Limit Bylaw ReviewTasman District Council is reviewing its Speed Limit Bylaw. The first stage of this review is to invite you to have your say about speed limits on local roads in Tasman District. Is there an issue with the speed on the road where you live? Are there other roads that you consider should have the speed limit reviewed?Send your suggestions by 4.00 pm, Friday 29 May 2015 to: Krista Hobday, Road Safety Coordinator Email: [email protected] Or by mail to: Tasman District Council, Private Bag 4, Richmond 7050All suggested speed limit changes will then be subject to a speed warrant process and assessment where Council staff use a national rule developed by the New Zealand Transport Agency. The rule is used to balance the interests of mobility and safety by ensuring the speed limit on a particular road is safe. The speed limit must also be appropriate and credible for the level of roadside development and the category of road for which it is set. Speed limits must also be nationally consistent. The current speed limit bylaw and associated maps indicating speed limits on all roads within the District can be found on the Council website www.tasman.govt.nz

Community NoticesRichmond & Districts Information CentreVolunteers are required to work three hour shifts on a weekly or fortnightly basis at the Information Centre in Gladstone Road, Richmond.Initially successful applicants would be required to work with more experienced volunteers before being asked to work on their own. Although applicants should preferably have a good knowledge of the local community, this is not necessary, as the Centre has a large database. You should be well presented and enjoy meeting and conversing with visitors from all over New Zealand and the world. The Centre is well appointed with good facilities. If you are interested in this type of work, call in to the Centre or Ph. 03 543 9521 or contact Sally Symonds, Ph. 03 542 3983 for further details.

Planning for Brightwater and Wakefield’s futureThe Council is planning for long-term population and business growth in Brightwater and Wakefield. To support this conversation with residents and businesses we have prepared a strategy and a draft plan change for each township. This stage builds on last year’s conversations with the community using those as a base for this next step in the planning.Within both documents we are looking to address the current issues including;• managing flooding and its associated risks, • more open space and walkways, and • identifying the best place for residential and business opportunities. Information is available on the Council website www.tasman.govt.nzWe are accepting comments until Tuesday 9 June 2015.For more information about the strategy and draft plan change please contact: Rose Biss, Ph. 03 543 8421 – for Brightwater. Shelagh Noble, Ph. 03 543 7229 – for Wakefield.
