A team of six specialist fit-out staff from all over the country has been erecting shelving for the last three months while many of the store’s new-ly-employed staff have been stocking shelves for the last three weeks.“We have about three-quarters of our staff here now and the fit-out crew who do all the development work for The Warehouse and the team from Gibbons, so it’s organised chaos,” Geoff says. “But everyone is doing a great job and we’re on track for the opening.” Geoff, who managed The Warehouse’s stores in Blenheim, Nelson and Mo-

tueka before coming to Richmond, says the 3500 metre square new store has a modernised format with a large win-dow frontage on Queen Street. It is a similar size to the one in Motueka and

will employ 62 staff with 13 of those transferring from the Nelson store. It will be stocked with around $2 mil-lion worth of products and will be of-ficially opened next Thursday at 8am.

There was a sense of deja vu for Prime Minister John Key when he visited a Nelson company that has become a market lead-er in manufacturing concrete-cutting and polishing tools.Last Wednesday, John Key told staff and guests at Holer Diamond Tools on Main Road Hope that one of his first of-ficial duties as a Member of Parliament was to "unveil a concrete mixer". Then he ce-mented his concrete theme by commissioning Holer's new $1 million laser welder which is used to manufacture diamond-tipped concrete cutting tools."It was the very first thing I unveiled as a Member of Par-liament and I'm not talking about anything flash like this," he joked. The Prime Minister has come a long way since then and so has Holer which was started by Fred Holer in his garage in White's Road near Richmond in 1992. Today, Fred's sons Phil and Simon head a multi-million dollar company that employs 24 people and exports concrete cutting tools and technology all over the world. "I was a concrete cutter and master builder in Austria be-fore I came to Nelson in 1991," Fred says. "I saw a need for

good concrete cutting tools here so I started a business in our garage on Whites Road - and now look at us."Simon Holer says they will be able to manufacture diamond-tipped core drills, saw blades and grinding cups "20-times faster and more accurately" us-ing the new laser welder which was imported from Germany earlier this year. Simon says that will allow Holer to in-crease their export capacity and manufacture a "more price competitive product."Phil Holer told the Prime Min-ster that the company's aim was to "generate $10 million worth of exports to Australia" to help New Zealand "increase export numbers not expat numbers".Holer's Phil Mayer gave John Key a demonstration of the

welder which is the only one of its kind in the southern hemi-sphere and just one of five in the world. The PM told Holer's staff that innovative technology like their welder was helping strengthen the country's man-ufacturing sector which had now grown every month for the last 21 months."A lot of what is happening right around New Zealand, and you can see it here today, is the importation of equip-ment from overseas which lifts the output for New Zealand and allows export into markets around the world," he says. The Prime Minister also vis-ited the Nelson College trades academy last Wednesday as well as the Nelson-Tasman Hospice with Health Minister Tony Ryall.

About 160 engineers, painters and specialist tradespeople will be busy on the Interislander flagship Kaitaki, which arrived in Port Nelson early on Sunday for a week-long overhaul. Port Nelson marine special-ist Diverse Engineering are the prime contractors for the overhaul and project manag-er Mike McDowell says they went straight to work when the Kaitaki berthed. They will be installing a new rescue boat, painting and carrying out minor repairs - the ship will also have a planned survey by Lloyd’s Register while in Port Nelson.“We’ve got all of our 50 staff

plus subcontractors on the ship, so there’s 150 to 160 in to-tal,” Mike says. “The painting is one of the biggest jobs and we have Nicholsons and Jennex doing that.“It’s another reasonable-sized job for us but the big thing is the time. We have to be fin-ished on schedule because they want the ship back sailing, so we’ll have some painters and engineers on board 24-7.”Mike says Diverse Engineering has “been on and off ” the In-terislander ships for a number

of years and this week’s over-haul is a continuation of their work for KiwiRail. Diverse En-gineering’s staff have worked on smaller jobs on their boats while they are sailing and also flown to Wellington work on the boats while they are berthed in Wellington Harbor. The 181 metre long Kaitaki is scheduled to sail back to Wel-lington this Saturday at 6.30pm and return to service the fol-lowing day, sailing from Wel-lington at 8.30am.KiwiRail spokesman Michael Flyger said the work was com-ing to Nelson due to its favour-able weather, skilled marine engineers and ease of access.

Police: Take caution on icy roadsPolice are reminding the public that the roads can be hazardous at this time of the year, and the mes-sage comes after more snow fell in St Arnaud and on the Takaka Hill, last week.

Inspector Steve Greally says drivers should take time to clear their win-dows and to look at their tyres and wiper blades. He says the few min-utes of inconvenience in the morn-ing could prevent an accident.

NEWSin brief$650,000 BOOST FOR HOSPICES: Hospice and palliative care services in Nelson will receive around $650,000 extra next year thanks to National’s $20 million hospice boost announced this week. There are two hospices in the Nel-son Marlborough region – Hospice Mar-lborough and Nelson Tasman Hospice.“Hospices make a huge difference to peo-ple’s lives by ensuring terminally ill peo-ple are as free from pain and suffering as possible. They also provide care and support for families and friends,” says Health spokesman Tony Ryall.

FINAL MONTH FOR GIGATOWN: ‘This weekend the Gigatown show is coming to Richmond Mall with an important message: there is less than a month to the end of this round of the competition, and if Nelson wins, the whole region wins. The Gigatown Nelson volunteers will be on hand this weekend to help people to sign up and do the quizzes. The team will be at the Mall from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 August. All August quizzes must be done by the 31st.

WINTER WONDERLAND: After a year without snow at ground level, St Arnaud residents and visitors have already been

treated to a white winter, and would have woken up to snow at their doorsteps last

Tuesday morning.St Arnaud had its largest snowfall of the

year on Tuesday, with snow tumbling down at around 9:30am and again at

5pm in the evening, beautifully captured by Tasman District Council’s Snap IT

HD webcam. But the amount of snow was unable to be accurately recorded, as Met-Service

does not have an automatic weather station in St Arnaud and is instead reli-ant on members of the public reporting

it. Photo: Snap IT HD/Tasman District

ELAE don’t hold any grudges for not making the Nelson Smokefre-erockquest final, but their notable omission was made even more glaring after the Garin College duo were selected for the national final next month.Anna Robinson and Olivia Nott, who are best friends, have been performing together for just over a year and a half. They previously went under the name Livvy and Anna, but have since merged their names together to create ELAE (pronounced L.A).Anna says the pair are “so excited” to be able to perform at the nation-al final in Auckland after think-ing their chance was over. “It’s a proud moment because we pushed through something that we thought

was the end for us,” she says. “It shows that if you do keep trying then something good can come out of it.”Just six bands and three solo/duos were named in the national final, but ELAE were the only act from Nelson, with Nelson’s winning band Oh Blok missing out. They were given a “highly commended.”ELAE is the only duo amongst the top three solo/duos, but Olivia, who is the younger sister of Broods members Caleb and Georgia Nott, doesn’t believe that would be an ad-vantage for the pair. “We are differ-ent to the soloists because we have the opportunity to do harmonies,” she says. “But it doesn’t mean it’s an advantage. Everyone is really tal-ented.”

Vector Free Marlborough Ltd wishes to advise the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) for the purpose of controlling possums in the Baton-Arthur area. The operation is being carried out under contract to TBfree New Zealand for the purposes of the National Bovine Tuberculosis Pest Management Plan.

Control Area:The Baton-Arthur treatment area consists of approximately 27,500 hectares in the eastern reaches of Kahurangi National Park and some adjacent or nearby private forest and farmland blocks west of the Motueka River, extending from the lower Wangapeka River to north of the Flora Carpark, including the eastern slopes of the Mt Arthur Range.

A detailed map of the operational area can be viewed at the local Department of Conservation offices in Nelson, Motueka and Takaka between 9:00am and 4:00pm week days.

If you require more specific details of the control area, please contact Vector Free Marlborough Ltd on the contacts below.

Commencement Date:The aerial application of cereal pellets containing Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) will commence on or thereafter 23 August 2014.

Bait Description:Pre-feed: Cereal based pellet, approximately 30mm long, non-dyed (brown in colour).

Toxic bait: Cereal based pellet, approximately 30mm long, dyed green with a toxic loading of 1.5g/kg Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080).

Precautions:The public are reminded of the danger that toxic baits and possum carcasses pose, particularly to children and dogs. Children should be kept under strict supervision in the operational area.

Please call the National Poisons Centre for details regarding Sodium Fluoroacetate (1080) – Ph. 0800 764 766

Dogs should be kept under strict control at all times and not have access to, or be taken into the operational area as they are particularly susceptible to 1080 and poisoned carcasses.

An arson attack could have left Richmond man Nick Fowler $300,000 out of pocket if his Pro Karts business hadn’t had full in-surance cover.A building and everything in it, including 13 go-karts, computer timing equipment, safety gear, parts and tools were destroyed in March, and the offenders responsible for the arson at-tack were never found. After four long months, the T a h u n a n u i business has fi-nally been able to offer its full services again, with Pro Karts officially back open. But Nick never expected it would take so long. “It’s taken a long time. It’s been a relatively stressful and full-on winter, trying to get eve-rything going and trying to keep what’s existing going, like our laser tag,” he says.Nick, who has been in business for nearly eight years, was able to run some of the karts he had left – but

not ones suitable for children – as he wanted to keep his “name out there”. “We didn’t want people to think we had closed down because of the fire. It was important to keep our name and our brand alive enough so that when we did open people still knew we were around.”

“It was getting a bit like Ground-hog Day, com-ing down every week with no results because things have tak-en so long, like council consent for the new building, but seeing the karts go round and the smiles on people’s faces

has put me back on a high.”And although it has been an “ex-tremely frustrating” four month wait, Nick remained relatively posi-tive. The business had full insurance cover, including loss of income during the four months, and Nick says he was pushing Nelson City Council to beef up their security and lighting down the back beach.

Pro Karts reopens, months after arson

Richmond councillor Michael Higgins wants council to con-sider selling some of their commercial forests to help pay for the $42 million Lee Valley Dam project.Council is proposing to build a 53-metre high dam in the up-per reaches of the Lee River to provide water for irrigation on the Waimea Plains and meet growing urban and indus-trial water demands. However, council hasn’t decided how to pay for the pro-ject and Michael says they need to consider the option of “trading assets” to fund the dam.“It’s something that, as a Richmond councillor, I’m willing to look at,” Michael says. “Discussion papers are going out to resi-dents to consider options to pay for the dam and selling the forests is something that needs to be put on the table.”Council owns seven commer-cial forests around the district with a total of 2717 hectares

of productive land, although Michael says that the Rabbit Island and Kingsland forests should not be included in any asset sales because of their im-portance to the community.

The Rabbit Island forest was used for biosolid disposal while both Rabbit Island and Kings-land were valued recreational areas, he says.Michael says there is no question that the Lee Valley Dam project is essen-

tial for the future growth of the district because water resources on the Waimea Plains are already over allo-cated. The dam will provide water for irrigators and indus-trial and urban users as well as maintain the environmental and recreational values of the Waimea River. However, Michael says fund-ing the project is proving to be

a big challenge and that’s why council and ratepayers need to look at selling some of the for-ests. He says the forests have a high commercial value and he estimates that proceeds from their sale “could be in the ball park of the council’s side of the dam’s cost”.“The dam is a big ticket item and borrowing the money is not a problem - it’s just the level of debt it creates.“I am prepared to accept that debt but I think it would be better to be prudent and look at trading assets. I have dis-cussed this with councillors and they are willing to look at it and put it on the table.”Although the forests are a steady source of income for council, generating about $1 million a year, Michael consid-ers that a dam would be a bet-ter investment. “What’s the best value for the community? Is a forest the best value or is a dam and a guaran-teed water supply? The forests generate an income but so will the dam. There’s also the ques-tion of should the council be involved in forestry anyway?”

As Rule Britannia filled the air and the thoughts of those gathered were with Nelson’s courageous WW1 service men and women, the first sailing was brought to life once more. Participants donned their WW1 uniforms in an open air ceremony that aimed to re-enact the brave footsteps of Nelson’s men and women as they prepared to set sail to war. Nelson mayor Rachel Reese and Nelson RSA recreated the messages behind the stirring speeches that

would have fare welled our service people and others across New Zea-land. Nelson City Council’s WW100 Coordinator, Ian Barker, says the event was a great opportunity for everyone to understand the sense of honour, occasion and trepidation experienced by the heroic young Nelsonians, although at the time of the sailing, the war had just begun and the horrors of fighting were still to hit Nelson. A single wreath was laid to remember the loss of life on both sides of the trenches.

Participants in the first sailing commemoration included the air train-ing corps, the Nelson and Motueka cadet corps and the sea cadet corps. Photo: Jessie Johnston.

Six vehicles stolen on the one weekendA recent spike in car thefts has po-lice concerned, with six stolen ve-hicles being reported last weekend alone, but social media is playing a part in helping owners recover them.Four scooters have also been stolen in the past seven days and all have been recovered.Police say scooters are becoming a “popular target” for joyriders, and they’re concerned by the recent spike, which includes various types of vehicles.A number of the thefts involved ve-hicles where the keys had been left in the ignition, making them eas-ily attainable. “This current spike is certainly a concern and we would encourage everyone to lock their vehicle and remove valuable items from parked vehicles,” says ser-geant Dave Prentice. “Some people are making it very easy for thieves to take their vehicles. I would rec-ommend anything that is going to make your car a less attractive tar-get - such as a steering lock or an alarm.”But not all of the thefts were of un-locked vehicles. Nelson teenager Ben McLeod’s Nissan Primera was

stolen from his Curtis St home in Stoke last month. It was locked and is believed to have been taken for a joyride – which could be a popular theme, with Nelson Bays Police re-porting a “very high” rate of recov-ery. Ben’s car was stolen in the night, around 4am, but was recovered just a week later after his mother, Peta-Marie, had posted details of the car on various Facebook pages, includ-ing local online garage sales. “When I put it up so many people told me they had had their car stolen too, it just went on and on,” she says. “It wasn’t something you hear regular-ly in Nelson, but there’s something going on.”Just last week a 2007 Ford Ranger that was stolen from Richmond, was recovered after it was posted on the Nelson Police Facebook Page, and Dave agrees that social media was helping victims as the publicity was likely to put more pressure on the offender to abandon the vehi-cles.Police statistics show that there have been 146 unlawful takings in the 12 months leading up to June 2014.

Firooz Zadeh PresentationFirooz Zadeh launched his new book titled The Power and the Peril of Oil with a presentation at the Tasman District Library. His launch included a power point display and discussion about the life and present day condi-tions in the Middle East. Zadeh’s launch drew a lot of interest with over 50 people gathering to learn about the new book. Copies of his pub-lication are available from The Copy Press in Stoke and can be ordered online from www.copypress.co.nz.

Auctioned MedalsThe rare collection of medals from the Second World War that were auctioned last weekend drew a large crowd. Along with the medals was a portrait of the Nelson soldier who was awarded them and a letter he wrote to his family during the war. Auctioneer John Walker says the medals sold well and that it was also very nice to see they were bought by a local so they can remain in the soldier’s community.

Tapawera Open Boar Hunt. The Tapawera Rugby Club’s open boar hunt finished at 4pm on August 9, with the heaviest boar weighing in at a very decent 64 kilograms. For three years the open boar hunt has been a major fundraiser for the Tapawera Rugby Club. and this year it drew in 50 entries plus 40 chil-dren’s entries, with cash prizes going to the top five heaviest boars, the biggest tusks and the av-erage weight.

Richmond Rabbits win third TRL title:“No other side has gone before”. You’re wrong there. The Motueka Tigers won three consecutive grand

finals in the early 90s and the Whakatu Firebirds won three in a row from 1997 to 19991. The Firebirds also won every game they played in 1998, no draws or losses. Jah Jah.

Great effort! Just a question though, was the comp run under the TRL

umbrella? Because the article says ‘no oth-er TRL side...’ Tristan Laubscher

The Stoke Community Centre’s Social Seniors Club needs a new van to help pick up their “least mobile” members from Nelson, Stoke and Richmond, so they can enjoy the club’s dai-ly meals and activities. So that’s why they have en-tered the Car Company Char-ity Drive competition, which is offering a prize of $10,000 for a group or organisation that is doing great things in our com-munity. And there’s no question the Stoke Seniors qualifies for the competition with the club pro-viding a place for their 450 members to meet and socialise and enjoy the most amazing meals.“We are a social club for home-based seniors,” chairman of the board of trustees Allen John-son says. “A lot of older people living at home find themselves being isolated and that’s where we come in - we are like a youth drop-in centre for seniors.”Allen says the Stoke Seniors provides a full day of pro-grammes for members includ-ing entertainment, education, tours and meals. The club tar-gets home-based seniors aged 60 and over, and aims to help their members maintain their independence and keep them

active and healthy. Allen says Stoke Seniors is based at the rear of the Stoke Community Hall on Main Road Stoke employs four full-time and one part-time staff who are assisted by 20-30 vol-unteers. The cooks provide a picnic lunch for club tours on Mondays and lunches for “50 to 60 people” at the club’s head-quarters on Tuesday, Wednes-day and Thursday.Stoke Seniors have an an-nual budget of $260,000, with $60,000 of that being spent on food. They receive $60,000 in funding from the Ministry of Health with the remain-der coming from community grants and fundraising.

Allen says the club “has a num-ber of things on their wish list, but the big ticket item is to replace the oldest van in our fleet.” The vans are critical for picking up their least mobile members so they can enjoy the daily ac-tivities and meals at the club.Stoke Seniors are holding their next fundraising quiz night at the club’s hall on Friday August 29 from 6pm to 8pm.Tickets for the quiz are avail-able from Stoke Seniors Hall at 548 Main Road Stoke or by phoning 547 2660.The Car Company Charity Drive has attracted over 40 en-tries so far with entries closing at 4pm this Friday.

Their first night at Club Waimea was a fantastic celebration of Rock’n’Roll and everyone was impressed with the lovely atmosphere, the great floor area for dancing the night away and the wel-coming attitude of everyone at Club Waimea. The Sun City Rockers will be dancing every Tuesday from 7pm. If you don’t want to dance, then still pop along and join them - it’s a great chance to sit, watch and reminisce.

After a day and a half and eight games of section play, four pairs qualified for the championship proper along with 27 other entries from throughout the Island. Mark Friend and Nobby Yorwarth had a good first-round win over the Oamaru No.1 side before losing out to the eventual tournament winners, Dave Whitehira and Alan Robertson from the Hornby Club. Nathan Geddes and Ray Denby were beaten in the first post-section round, but then proceeded to sweep aside teams from Papanui and Invercargill

to reach the Flight final. There, they had a real battle with the Oamaru No.1 side, before coming out on top in the third frame to take the win 2-1. Barry and Ray Weavers qualified once again but struck a tough draw which stalled their further progress. Kerry Laing and Colin Bowden also made the cut after section play, mainly courtesy of a most-unexpected victory over the tournament’s fifth seeds from the Richmond Club. Kevin Whitlow and Jon Sharpe won through to the final of the Plate competition, where they went

down to another Oamaru pair. Two other Club Waimea members were in the tournament. Mike Boyd teamed up with Edward Andrews in an attempt to better their runners-up performance of 2013. They had some very good victories through the post-section rounds, but were eventually beaten by Whitehira and Robertson in the quarter-finals. Shane Geddes paired with Graham Nobbs of the Papanui Club and after an unsuccessful first day had several good wins to make the qualifying cut.

the Nelson tramping club, keen divers, fishers, and gun men. It’s an easy working environment, when you’re do-ing it in the weekend it’s easier to talk about it during the week.”

When there’s no line between work and play, the service that the staff at Hunting and Fishing can offer is backed up by their own personal experiences, and when it comes

to gear for the seasoned hunter or diver, tried and trusted is essential. “They know what works and they’re not go-ing to recommend it if they don’t think its right for the customer’s needs. We talk all the time about products that work and don’t work and what we would be buying if we were on the other side of the counter. Customers have the trust in us that we will advise them on the right products.”Hunting and Fishing in Richmond may be a smaller store than Nelson but they pride themselves on a second-to-none store atmosphere. “Our shop presentation and stock levels make us stand out,” says Chris. “It’s an enjoyable place to come into and it’s clean and tidy and displayed well. People can come in and enjoy a browse around, they’re not shuffling down aisles, and even if they’re not buying they can come in and enjoy exploring the products.” Hunting and Fishing Richmond also cater to any budget, making them the best option for any outdoor enthusiast. “We cater for all levels and we have the best product available for your budget. If it was a rod and reel for 100 bucks, we

pick what we feel is the best value product for that amount, so when a customer comes in and is only willing to spend 100 dollars; he can get the best quality within that range.” Hunting and Fishing Richmond are glad to call the long-standing icon of Richmond their home and are committed to making what has been a good store even better. Their doors will be open on Friday 22 with specials right across their product range, including up to 50 per cent off Ridge-line clothing and heavily reduced prices on rods, reels, fishing accessories, firearms and hunting gear.

Hunting and Fishing New Zealand is coming to Rich-mond. There aren’t many New Zealander’s who don’t ap-preciate our beautiful kiwi environment and Hunting & Fishing New Zealand also shares a love for our stunning outdoors. Bringing Hunting and Fishing to Richmond was a no brainer for Chris and Karen Scully who are also the own-ers of the award-winning Hunting and Fishing New Zea-land Nelson Store. The demand to cater for the Richmond region’s keen outdoor enthusiasts and visitors was obvious

to the Scully’s, and soon their wealth of experience will be available for Richmond locals to take advantage of. Chris has 17 years of professional involvement at Hunt-ing and Fishing New Zealand, and Karen seven years. Their successful Nelson store specialises in providing hunting and fishing and camping and tramping equipment and with Richmond on route to the regions’ many walks and national parks, it

will focus heav-ily on catering to the campers and trampers while also carrying on the traditional lines of hunting and fishing gear that the organisation made its name with. The Richmond

business has a deep history which is very much respected by Chris and Karen. Originally established as Richmond Sports Depot by Kelvin Gardner and Brian Murphy in the

mid 70’s, it was later sold to Dave and Sandy Heyward in 2000 and be-came known as Stirling Sports. The new custom fit-out lifts the store into the modern era so that it can continue to be a local icon in sports and the outdoors. Hunting and Fishing New Zealand’s Richmond store will be offering customers a huge range of equip-ment for outdoor pursuits including hunting, fishing, free diving, scuba diving, camping and tramping. Al-though they are predominantly

known as Hunting and Fishing New Zealand, they also have a another brand called Camping and Tramping New

Zealand, which provides quality products for those looking to make the most out of our re-gion’s back yard gems, like the Abel Tasman and Kahurangi national parks. Hunting and Fishing Richmond have a range of boots, packs, shelters, sleeping bags, lighting, cookware and more, en-suring you have everything you need to stay safe and get out there. They also have the best equipment for every other kind of activity, with quality lines in hunt-ing gear including firearms, archery and cross-bows, hunting accessories and optics, saltwater and freshwater fishing rods and reels, and last-ly, men’s, women’s and kid’s outdoor clothing, headwear and accessories to cover every season and every challenge.Chris places a lot of importance on the people who will be working in his Richmond store and always tries to have a mix of age and expertise to help people with every enquiry. “Everyone here has a passion for the outdoors,” says Chris. “We have five staff here and all are active in their spe-cialty field. They have just expanded their showroom and have doubled the floor space, to extend their product range and display more stock. Baby on the Move has everything you could possibly wish for and need in the way of baby and child products, and they specialise in what they do. Owners Craig and Tania Smith know the products they sell like the back of their hands, so you can rely on them for the best recommendations and advice on any item for your child. Baby on the Move is a one-stop

shop for everything; hiring, buying and servicing. They cater for everyone’s needs and budgets with exclusive, good quality, affordable products that will last. They have always had access to a range of baby items which can be seen on their website www.babyonthemove.co.nz, but the bigger store now means they can stock more ranges, including their exclusive Outnabout Buggy range. The list of the top-quality products Baby on the Move stock includes everything from car seats and accessories, cots, bedding, buggy’s, swaddles, breast pumps, high chairs, front packs, protective clothing, nurs-

ery furniture to toys and much, much more. But what really makes Baby on the Move stand apart from the rest is their knowledge on everything they sell. "People think they want something but we can often direct them to something cheaper and better to suit their needs,” says Craig. “Our suppliers and manufacturers back it up too; a lot of product that we have has a five year guarantee on it, especially the buggy’s. And we do great package deals where you can get your feeding bottles and breast pumps, your cot, buggy and your capsule for a bulk deal, just to help a little bit.” Baby on the Move are also child restraint certified technicians, which means we are qualified to install and sell child restraint equipment. “Nothing to do with child restraints goes out of the store in a box. It’s always tested to make sure it fits properly and anybody who pur-chases a seat from here gets lifetime installation free; it doesn’t cost anything, so they can call back 10 or 15 times a week, it doesn’t matter,” says Craig. “Some customers think they are a pain coming back to get their car seats re-installed, but we say to them we’d sooner they came back because there’s nothing worse than driving around with a loose seat.” Craig says that up to 89 per cent of child re-straints are still installed incorrectly, which is too high a number. “We’re brave enough to say this really isn’t fitting the car properly, and we’ll try an-other solution until we find the correct restraint. We have chosen to be child restraint technicians and we renew that every two years, which means being fully up-to-date with each new seat that en-ters the market so we know what it can and can’t do. All the products are great but everything has a limitation, and people need to be aware about what that is. A buggy, for instance, might not lie flat, which can be bad for some people.” Hiring products is also a useful option for parents to be and Baby on the Move has pretty much everything

Alex Herbert believes all the hard work and long hours he has spent in the kitchen are starting to pay off, after he was an-nounced as the winner of the Nelson Hospitali-ty Award’s Up and Com-ing Chef section. The 22 year old, origi-nally from England but grew up in Golden Bay, is the Harbour Light Bis-tro’s demi-chef de partie, and says the win was a big surprise and reward for the work he has put in over the past two and half years in the hospi-tality industry. “I wasn’t expecting it at all. But I work pretty hard,” he says. “There have been a lot of nights when I’ve been in the kitchen at 11 o’clock and I could’ve started at eight in the morning. It shows that the hard work pays off in the end.”Alex contested the Up and Com-ing Chef section against four other chefs from across the region. The competition featured a “mystery box” format, where all contestants were given the same ingredients.Included amongst the items were a chicken breast and streaky bacon,

plus an assortment of standard vegetables.Alex made a chicken breast stuffed with a citrus mousseline, some-thing familiar, a “bit more com-plex”, and a dish he thought the judges would like. The rest of the winners from the New Zealand King Salmon Nel-son Hospitality Awards will be announced on Monday, including best cafe and best restaurant.

Murchison disasters Murchison, or Hampden as it was first known, has had more than its share of disasters. The original township was built on a low flat formed by the junction of the Ma-takitaki and Buller Rivers. In 1878

a massive flood swept away many buildings which were rebuilt on higher ground where Murchison is today. Major floods in 1888 and 1926 saw roads and bridges rebuilt each time before the 1929 earth-quake destroyed them again.

available for hire too. “Around 80 per cent of busi-ness is hiring. We hire anything, high chairs, cots, portacots, buggy’s, car seats, portable high chairs, safety gates - pretty much anything for as long as you need it,” says Craig. “And again, we’re brave enough to say to people, 'look, you’re better off to buy it than hire it.' We can really direct them well. You can hire anything from a day to a week, a month, a year, whatever you want to do, but there comes a point where hiring isn’t really viable.” Baby on the Move provide Grey Power discounts across the board, a great solution for the grandpar-ents hiring for the Christmas period and holiday

Important Information 2015 Enrolment Scheme

In order to avoid the likelihood of overcrowding, the Waimea College Board of Trustees has an approved enrolment scheme in place. Under this scheme, students will be enrolled if they live within the home zone described below.

Start from where Wills Road meets the Inland Highway. Draw a line from this intersection to the intersection of Marriages

Road and the Coastal Highway and on to the sea. Follow south-east along the coast to include Rabbit Island, re-joining

at Saxton Road. Extend the line of Saxton Road to the south-east to meet a line

running from Clover Knob to Gordons Knob and north from Gordons Knob to Spooners Saddle on Highway 6.

From there, in a straight line to the top of the Rosedale Saddle, then to the south-western end of Wills Road and along Wills Road to where it meets the Inland Highway.

Note: Addresses in Wills Road would be deemed to be in the Waimea College zone as defined by the line drawn between Gordons Knob and the Coastal Highway on the map provided. The enrolment of out of zone students is governed by the provisions of the Education Act 1989. The enrolment scheme, which includes a precise description of the home zone, may be viewed at the school office and will be included with the College’s enrolment form.

The College believes there will be space for some students who live out of the home zone.

Enrolments must be received at the College by 29 August 2014. A ballot will be held for out of zone applicants on 12 September 2014.

Wakefield rower brings home bronze medalWakefield can feel proud to call itself home for one of the Junior World Rowing Champs bronze medallists, Sean Ducray. Nelson and Waimea College rowers Olly Stephens and Sean Ducray arrived home to the roar of the Haka from Nelson College’s Fell House boarders and a welcoming committee of friends and family. Nelson Rowing Club’s talented athletes have achieved a great result after their debut performance in international level rowing and along with their team mates, Jack O’Leary from Kavanagh College and Ari Palsson from Whakatane High School, have taken home bronze in the Men’s Quadruple Scull. After being selected for the New Zealand team in April, they spent six weeks training as a squad at Lake Karapiro before travelling to the Junior World Rowing Championships in Hamburg, Germany this month. Although they weren’t able to take home the gold, which went to their German hosts, followed by Great Britain. Sean couldn’t be happier with their result. “We couldn’t have done anything more than what we did. I’m really proud of what we’ve done, it was really competitive but I enjoyed it so much and I can’t wait to do it again. It was very professional and competitive and you could see what it would be like to be an international racer.”

Wakefield School NewsKind Donation, by Neve (Year 6) Wakefield school ,is very lucky because the local Wakefield Hotel has given them $500 dollars. The cheque was presented at a recent school assembly. It was raised at the annual stag and boar hunt held in Wakefield. Every year once they have raised the money, the hotel gives some to a local group or charity and this year we were the lucky school who got it. We have decided we are going to buy some

large logs to build a rim for our new vegetable garden and we are looking forward to having fresh vegetables. “I’m really happy that the Wakefield Hotel has given us the money and I’m excited about how we will spend it,” says Wakefield School principal, Mr Verstappen.

New Pets, by Aria (Year 5)We have some new members of Wakefield School. They’re white and fluffy and not like any other students we already have. They are the new pets in Totara Tahi syndicate. Rooms One and Two had a vote to see what class pet they should buy with the money they raised from their first market day. Rats were voted number one so last term a couple of students went with the teacher to choose the new rats. The class voted to call them Shadow and Coco. Shadow and Coco eat nuts and seeds. They live in a very nice cage that was donated by the vet

with interesting activities like a wheel, ropes and ladders. There is a roster for kids to take them home during weekends and holidays. The

children love having them because they climb all over them and are cute and soft.

Market Day, by Abby (Year 5 )On the 5th of August Wakefield School held its second market day. It was attended by the Wakefield students, staff and community. Before the day, groups of students worked so hard on deciding what product to sell or service to offer. They had to work out the cost and prepare their

product. They had to pay taxes if their product was unhealthy or environmentally unfriendly. On the day there were toffee apples, cookies, sausages, burgers, cakes, crafts and car washes for sale - so much to see and do. After Market day each group counted the money, paid back the money they borrowed and found out how much profit the group had made. At the end not a single group was in debt. Now we are trying to decide how we are going to spend the money we made.

Waimea College came from behind in both key encounters to secure the boys and girls ti-tles at the Tasman Secondary School Hockey Championship last week.It was the first time in five years that Waimea College had taken out the boys division, their 2-2 draw with Nelson College giving them enough points to take the top spot, at

Saxton Field on Wednesday.Nelson College had to set-tle for second place, after also drawing with Marlborough Boys’ College. And the girls made it a Waimea College double, shocking Nel-son College for Girls to score six unanswered goals after trailing 4-1 at half-time, to secure the come-from-behind 7-4 victory.

Nelson College for Girls ended up in second place ahead of Marlborough Girls’ College. Each secondary school will be competing at one of the various national hockey tournaments next month, with five tiers of respective competitions being held during tournament week.Which tournament they enter is dependent on their placing last year.

Susie Wood heads up the Gibbs Hill track at the start of the run in the Gibbs Hill Challenge in Golden Bay last Sunday. Photo: Phil Castle.

Richmond’s Susie Wood may have been a Commonwealth Games road cyclist but it was her running that gave her a the winning edge in the Gibb’s Hill Challenge in Golden Bay.Susie and Nelson’s Ingrid Richter produced almost identical times in the 23 kilometre road cycle from Takaka to Wainui and return in the annual duathlon held on August 10. The pair arrived at the first transi-tion at Wainui together in about 43 minutes and then rode solo back to the finish in 52 minutes. But in between the cycle legs, Susie

was four minutes 36 seconds faster on the 21 kilometre mountain run around the northern section of the Abel Tasman National Park and over the 629 metre high Gibbs Hill. She won in a time of 3 hours 45 minutes and 4 seconds, just five minutes and six seconds ahead of Ingrid.Auckland’s Brendan Erskine won the men’s race in 3 hours 12 min-utes and 2 seconds, two minutes

and 20 seconds ahead of Nelson’s Trevor Voyce who lost valuable seconds when he punctured on the return cycle to Takaka. Incredibly both Brendan and Trevor broke Na-than Fa’avae’s record of 3 hours 15 minutes and 49 seconds set in 2010. Hayden Squance and Kim Hogarth combined to win the team’s section in a record 2 hours 58 minutes and 45 seconds, eclipsing Cliff Bowman and Phil Costley’s mark of 2 hours 59 minutes and 26 seconds mark set in 2011.A capacity field of 70 competed in this year’s event.

The 2014/15 Dawnbreakers Fish-ing Club season gets ready to kick off on August 24.Some big changes to the club over the last two years has seen member-ship steadily growing and it looks like it’s not going to slow down any time soon. A change in venue to the Tasman Bay Cruising Club will see our once a month Club Day, on either Saturday evenings or as Sun-day afternoon socials, in the heartof the Nelson Marina. The club season extends eight months from October through to May, with prizegiving in June. Boat fishers, kayakers, jetskiers, land based anglers, divers and fresh wa-ter fisher folk are all welcome with senior men, ladies and junior sec-tions to enter. On the monthly club social days there will be a sausage sizzle, raf-fle and our usual fish of the month awards along with a ‘bugger’ award. The club has had some ex-cellent speakers in previous sea-sons and social events who gave talks on things like boating educa-tion, MFish (now MPI), commer-cial fishing, the rescue helicopter as well as club members giving in-formative talks. This year the club continues with its length-based competition to continue promoting catch and re-lease fishing as well as only taking enough for a feed. It has always been a concern of the club having its members taking breeding size snapper so they can weigh them in for club points, when many of the members said they would have preferred to release them. We took this on board and have changed to a length-based system where a member can catch a 20lb snapper, take a picture of it on an official measure board and then release the fish.Photos would then be emailed into the weighmaster and a point

per centimetre system will decide who has the biggest fish and most points. We have a point formula worked out that will make a 20lb snapper earn the same points as a 20kg Kingfish as we see those sized fish as “Pin fish.”(A pinfish is a fish that reaches that“magic” weight for that species, like20lb snapper, 7lb blue cod etc). Ac-cumulated monthly points will go towards a range of trophies that the club has on offer throughout the season for individual classes, as well as for longest fish in various species. The club calendar last year includ-ed trips away to Okiwi Bay, FrenchPass and Havelock and will be re-peated again this year all going well with the weather. Last season we also used local charter boat opera-tor Seabird charters for those club members that don’t have boats big enough to get up to D’Urville Island so they can have a taste of some of the hot action the area offers. We have found Barry and Lynley Bird excellent operators that have given our club members some great fish-ing experiences. This season we will also be having some club out-ings targeting areas closer to home. Also another benefit of belonging to a club is that some weekends members go out and find a certain bait or area is working better than others and as a club we can share that information to members, so everyone benefits. But you need to be a member and on our email list to get this up to date information. The club will be holding an OpenDay on the August 24 at the Tas-man Bay Cruising Club starting at 2pm.The DBFC invites all existing mem-bers and anyone who is interested to come along and join the club onOpen Day. Horticulture plays a big part in the Nelson region, and a job in the industry can be interesting and highly rewarding. Skills Update Training Institute, in conjunction with NMIT (Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology), is offering people the chance to gain a National Certificate in Horticulture (Introductory) (Level 2). Their distance learning program, starting in September, means you can have more freedom in your study and has proven to be very successful; gaining a lot of interest from small block owners, keen gardeners and those intending to enter the horticulture industry. The program will be run over 10 months on a part-time basis, with the majority of study undertaken online from home, making it a suitable option for people who are currently employed. This part-time program is complemented with weekly tutorials at NMIT in Nelson, where students will talk face-to-face with their learning facilitator about the information they have been studying over the week. They also have the opportunity for hands-on practical learning, which takes place on a monthly basis at the NMIT/Skills Update Training facility in Richmond. The program

has been hugely popular, attracting people of different ages and various walks of life, ranging from job seekers, home gardeners, doctors and accountants – all with the same passion for horticulture, and the best thing about the program is that it is absolutely fee free for all New Zealand citizens and permanent residents.

Topics included in the study content have been developed in consultation with the industry, so that the skills they are looking for in an employee are provided in the program. It is an NZQA recognised qualification and is useful for anyone looking at work around the region’s orchards, market gardens, nurseries and beautiful parks. The course content includes plant propagation and irrigation, tools and records, plant identification, pruning trees, shrubs and climbers, soil

and growing media, and botany for gardeners. The broad introduction to horticulture is also a stepping stone to further education, so for more information about how you can enrol in this fully-subsidised programme, contact Eileen Kaufman on 021 174 9414 or email her at [email protected]

In the Grade 1 game between Nayland College and Garin College it was definitely a game of two halves. Nayland were on the back foot from the get go as coach Trevor Olley has struggled to field a full line up for the past eight games due to injury and illness. A reshuf-fled mid court could not match the experience of Garin, par-ticularly in the second quar-ter when they were out scored 12–2. The lack of combination, coupled with the excellent de-fensive work of Kate Hand and Sarah Robinson forced a blow out. Nayland made several changes at the major break which soon began to pay dividends as they drew the third quarter 7-all. Tayler Boeyen’s move to goal attack had the Garin tall tim-ber defensive pairing moving, which made it easier to find free space. Nayland left their best until the final quarter when they outscored Garin 8–5. Holly Chandler had a great game at goal-keep as she picked off nu-merous well-timed intercepts,

most of which came in the final quarter.Garin’s standout was goal shoot Olivia Nott, with her movement and shooting on point. Poppy Restieaux at goal attack did a power of work off

the line and gained the major-ity of the centre pass received and played a more supportive role to Olivia. Rosette Hailes-Paku at wing attack in the first half was effective for the sec-ond phase play and along with her replacement Jess Brooks were accurate on the feed to the shooters. Makaila Powick had her usual industrious game until she left the court and was replaced by Keely Kira. Piki Boyles was introduced at wing defence in the second half and did a great job to apply pres-sure on the outside of the cir-cle and along with Kate and Sarah were an absolute wall of defence. Kate and Sarah re-bounded strongly and pulled in numerous intercepts.Even though Garin won the game 31–21, they will need to address the basic funda-mental errors when under pressure. There were several unforced errors which need to be eliminated from their game, however they will be looking to address this at the Supernet competition and the remaining competition games before heading to the South Island Secondary Schools next month. Nayland have decided not to compete in Supernet.
