From the Board...Overview of the January 2014 board meeting... by Lauren AveryInternal Audit•An internal audit of fiscal year 2012-2013 is being conducted by

Marcia Wishnick to gain an understanding of WAC finances, identify best practices to carry into the new fiscal year, and toensure that the financial records are sound. The full report will beavailable in the future.

•Developing the new budget is still in progress, and will be finishedupon completion of the audit.

House & Grounds•Gallery lighting – Joe is to be commended for fixing the last of the

electrical problems – now all lights in the Gallery work.• Internet service –Laurenwillmake an appointmentwithHawaiianTel

to have internet service installedGallery• January show reception was well received with about 100 guests;

however a concerted effort will be made for future receptions tohave more representation from the community.

•Show Schedule now includes: August - Marcia Wishnick and MernaWatta and September – Joe Laceby

•April Show – “Squared Away” requires that all submissions aresquare, no rectangles – a new and exciting idea to “change it up”!

•Disposition of art work after a showwas discussed, and fair and viableideas were presented. Sam will come up with a written documentoutlining the Gallery rules, including the disposition of art.

Membership•Committee now includes Lauren Avery. If any member of WAC

wishes to join the membership committee, please contact PatDinsman.

• It was determined that the “rules” for membership in WAC needed tobe outlined in a written document to ensure that the correctinformation is dispersed to all members and potential members. The committee will create this document by the Februarymeeting.

Old Business•Cherry Blossom Festival – WAC’s participation in the Festival is

running smoothly with Jay at the helm. A breakeven budget hasbeen approved

•SpringMembership Gathering – in the interest of getting to know oneanother and further the success of the Waimea Arts Council, aspring gathering is being planned. It could include artists bringingone of their art pieces to display and talk about.

New Business•Discussed goals for WAC to achieve over the next three years that

would signify success in rebuilding the organization.•Holding a Board Retreat mid-fiscal year was discussed. Focusing on

the future and organization was one idea. Wanting to have it be apositive and productive meeting would be the goal, which meansthat needs and concernsmust be addressedwithin committees priorto the Retreat. Anyone interested in helping to organize and helplead the Retreat is asked to contact Susan Harris or Lauren Avery.

It is incumbent on every member to voice his or her ideas and concernsinproductiveways so theycanbeaddressed. Please send ideas/concernsto Lauren Avery at (cell: 371-2502) or ([email protected]), sothey can be brought to the next board meeting. Mahalo for yourparticipation in the Waimea Arts Council and The Firehouse Gallery.

The Low-DownOur April Show, Squared Away, is adeparture from a few WAC traditions.CuratedbyJaclynMacKinnon, the showaimsnot to followa specific theme in thecontent of the works submitted butrather to create a strong visual effect in

the gallery as a whole making the exhibition itself an artisticendevour. The parameters of the show are simple: squarecanvases. There is no size limit, no limit in number ofsubmissions per artist and no entry fee; though as always wereserve the right to make the final selection of what goes on thewall. So as to avoid confusion on take-in day, here are theessentials:

-Only square canvases will be accepted, or work that can bestretched onto a canvas frame, such as watercolor or textiles. Please do not frame your work. Gallery wrap preferred.

-All mediums accepted, get creative! Painting, printing, photography, quilting, mixedmedia, pen and ink, go for it! Justso long as it's square and on a canvas frame.

-No limit on size or number of works submitted, a high volumeof submissions is the goal

-Prints on canvas are welcome, works need not be original

-Open to the community! No need to be a WAC member toparticipate. A 50% donation to WAC will be assessed on thesale of non-member works.

-Take-in isonMarch23, the showruns fromMarch26th toApril23rd with a reception on March 28th.

-All entries must be wired and ready to be hung - please nosawtooth hangers. We recommend the wire be 1/3 from the topof your piece.

-There is no age limit on participation, kids are welcome tosubmit work

Aside from creating a striking visual display in the gallery, what’s the point? With no restrictions on submission number orsubject, Squared Away is an excellent chance for artists to trysomething new, be it a new medium, style or subject. It’s alsoa chance for community members to try us out for one showcommitment-free, hopefully we pick up a few new members! So encourage creative friends to participate, new artists to pickup a brush, old hands to loosen up their artistic inhibitions andtry a new technique; spread the word that this is the show forthem!

For more information please feel free to contact JaclynMacKinnon at(808) 936-2792 or by email [email protected] instructions on doing acanvas wrap, go to http://www.wikihow.com/Stretch-a-Canvas

An example of the type of displayanticipated, except that all pieceswill not be the same size.
