The Nelson Fire Service has joined Energy Safety in warning consumers who have purchased some models of Weiss Heat Transfer Units.

The units have been the cause of 22 fires throughout New Zealand, fortunately none of the fires were in Nelson. The units aren’t allowed be

used or sold any more. The units were sold through Mi-tre 10 Mega and the mod-els are: Weiss Heat Transfer Units FV 602, FV 603, FV

652 and FV 653. Craig Piner from the Nelson Fire Ser-vice says the units operate in ceiling spaces and over air through ducts to heat houses.

win by one point.”

Sandy Lochhead,Brightwater.

“I think it’s going to be close, but definitely Wanderers. I think it’s amazing that both

The world championship quiz night is here. This Friday night at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms in Richmond, Mike Corkill and his six children will be hoping to crown a new “world champion”.The tongue-in-cheek title of the quiz was penned by Mike’s kids, who are hoping it will go a long way to helping Mike reach his $100,000 fundraising goal for a new pair of lungs. So far the family has raised more than $20,000 for the operation, which he needs to have to live. The operation isn’t funded by the government because Mike has a small chance of kidney failure after the operation. But if it’s successful, then Mike will be able to live for years and

watch his kids grow up. His condition is hereditary, not due to any lifestyle choices of his own. The quiz starts at 7pm with teams of eight. The come-dy duo of Steve Page and Kevin

Cross will MC the event, and there are thousands of dollars worth of prizes. To book your table, email [email protected] or call 544 3160.

Six Nelsonians have been named as finalists in the South Island section of the Pride of New Zealand awards.Kyle Paki Paki, Philip Walker, Adam Black and Gary Miller were selected as finalists in the bravery and heroism category for their rescue of the Fa’ave family in July last year. Ian Price will battle two others for the Environment award, and

Tama Easton and Mark Janssen make up two of the three final-ists in the fundraiser of the year category. The awards have been run-ning over the past two months, searching for the country’s most inspiring stories. In Nelson, more than 20 people were nominated, with six mak-ing it to the South Island finals in Christchurch on August 7.The South Island winners of each category will then go to

the national finals in Auckland in early September, meeting winners of the three regions in the North Island.Kyle Paki Paki says he was “ab-solutely humbled” when he found out he had made the fi-nals. He says he will be taking his mum with him to the din-ner. “Mum was the first person I opened up to after the acci-dent, so she knows what I’ve been through and she was the first person I thought of.”

Dog care services around the Tas-man district are booming, as the owners get busier and the dogs be-come hairier and more pampered. Twenty years ago there was just food (usually a can of Fido), vet's bills and registration, but today dog owners are also spending money dog groomers, walkers, trainers, whisperers, toys, cloth-ing and expensive speciality health foods. The New Zealand Compan-ion Animal Council estimates that the country's dog owners spend an average of $1047 each year on their dogs, and that amount doesn't sur-prise Richmond vet Brenda Hal-liwell. "Everyone is busier rushing around after children and work-ing, and they still want the fun of having a pet," Brenda says. "So what's happening is that they are paying people to groom and walk their dogs so they don't feel guilty about not doing it themselves."Brenda, who works for Town and Country Vet, says there's also been an increase in dog breeds that don't shed hair and that's increased the demand for dog groomers. "There are lots of smaller, fluffier crosses out there now and they need grooming. We call them oo-dles- they're the poodle and bi-chon frise and shih tzu crosses."One of Richmond's newest dog groomers, Lauryce Colvill, who operates the Hole Diggers Dog Spa, says she started off her busi-ness part-time in March last year, but went full-time in November because she couldn't keep up with

the demand. Now she grooms up to 20 dogs a week during the peak season in summer, usually taking two hours and charging around $60 for each dog. Lauryce says she provides the full range of grooming, including washing, removing matted hair, clipping, nail and teeth care and even nail art. Although many of her clients have dog breeds that need regular trim-ming and coat care, like border collies and spaniels, the majority are dog owners who simply enjoy pampering their best friend. "They love their dogs and like to pamper them. Their dogs are just as important to them as people."Dog owner David Macdonald says he brings his border collie, Sophie, into Lauryce every three or four months for a groom and for a clip-ping in summer. "We love Sophie and we like to give her all the best care," David says. "And we can see she gets looked after here - you can see that Lauryce loves them too."And according to veteran animal control officer John Bergman, Da-vid is typical of Tasman's 6500 dogs owners who give the the vast ma-jority of the district's 10,300 dogs the best of care. "We are spoiled in this area. People in Tasman look after their dogs really well."We talk to dog control officers around the country and in a lot of places they won't go onto a prop-erty alone - it's too dangerous. We do see the bad ones here, but not many of them."

One of the Tasman district’s deadliest cor-ners is being realigned while improving two black spots on Lower Queen St and controlling pedestrian crossings on Salis-bury Rd are on a list of other minor road-ing improvements projects being investi-gated by the council. A left-hand corner on Kerr’s Hill in Gold-en Downs is being realigned after two fatal motorcycle crashes in the last four years. The council’s transportation manager Gary Clark, says a combination of mis-leading “horizontal and vertical” curves was identified as a factor in both fatalities and contractors Higgins are presently rea-

ligning the corner.Gary says the corner was poorly designed because it had “a curve and then a straight and then a tighter curve going downhill”. That sometimes resulted in motorcyclists going into the second corner too fast and crossing the centre line - both fatali-ties happened when motorcycles collided head-on with cars. The realignment is ex-pected to be finished in about three weeks. The council has also commissioned de-signs for two intersections on Lower Queen St which carries 7000 cars a day and is the district’s second busiest road. There have been 10 crashes at the Swamp

and McShanes roads intersections in the last 10 years and Gary says they need to be changed to improve safety. He says the Swamp Rd intersection is especially “dif-ficult to identify” and needs turning lanes to highlight the intersection and make it safer.Gary says preliminary designs are also be-ing drawn-up to improve the safety of two dangerous intersections on Paton Rd. The

designs will increase the sighting distance of drivers at the White’s and Ranzau roads intersections and council has already start-ed negotiations for purchasing the land for the improvements at Ranzau Rd.A signalised pedestrian crossing on Salis-bury Rd near Waimea College and traffic lights at the William St intersection are also on the council’s minor roading im-provements wish-list. Gary says Salisbury Rd is “by far” the district’s busiest road with 18,000 cars a day and with a cluster of five schools between William St and Arbor-Lea Ave, they need to improve its traffic flows and pedestrian safety.

The Nelson Tramping Club will be looking back to when its members wore hob-nailed boots and oil skins and car-ried heavy canvas packs when they celebrate the club’s 80th anniversary at St Arnaud next weekend.About 40 of the club’s past and present members will be at-tending the anniversary at the Alpine Lodge and Lake Rotoiti Community Hall on Saturday and Sunday. Club secretary Pat Holland says they will be hold-ing a dinner at the Lodge on Saturday as well as slide shows and displays covering the club’s history.“Some of the slides and photos are really interesting,” Pat says. “They give a good insight into the club’s history.“The members were hardier back then because they had to be. The carried heavier packs - everything is lightweight now - and when they went up to Mt Arthur they would have to walk up from the Graham Valley be-cause the access road wasn’t there then. “The club also built a number of huts around the district. They built the original Rocks Hut but that’s been re-placed now.”Pat says 40 trampers went on the club’s first official trip along the Dun Line and around Mt Jenkins in June 1934. The first overnight trip during August 1934 was to Mt Arthur - the

walk to Flora Hut taking three hours due to the road end be-ing further down Graham Val-ley.The club’s most popular annual trip for 50 years was a Christ-mas trip up to Third House. The trip was advertised nation-ally at one stage with numbers peaking at 300 in 1969.Pat says he is looking forward

to catching up with some of the club’s past-presidents at the an-niversary weekend including Stoke’s Ian Bethwaite who is almost 90. They are also plan-ning some days walks as long as the weather cooperates. The club has a membership of 110 and plans two trips a week generally ranging from beach strolls to alpine expeditions.

Property insights

Lydia Heyward Licensed Real Estate Agent (REAA 2008)

The law has teeth and there has been a recorded case where the judge ordered the vendors pay for substantial remedial work to rectify a serious flaw in a property that they had not disclosed. Thankfully this was not in the Nelson Region.

Vendors’ obligations to agentsIt is now a legal requirement that vendors disclose any serious faults and defects of the property to the agent at the time of signing the listing forms. For example, if your oven is not in good functioning order, or the swimming pool pump is faulty, then you must disclose this. If there is something wrong with your property and you have told the agent not to tell the buyers then the agent will have to disengage themselves from your listing agreement.

The law states that agents must disclose all property information to a buyer and there is a serious conflict of interest if you ask them not to disclose, you are asking them to break the law.

If you have a property related question then e-mail me and I will see if I can help you. [email protected]

Nelson mountainbiking enthu-siast Tama Easton’s passion for long distance rides and a desire to help people suffering from ar-thritis has led to a nomination for the Pride of New Zealand’s Fundraiser of the Year Award. The former editor of Spoke mountainbiking magazine loves nothing more than getting on his bike, but last weekend Tama went for his first ride since April and could only manage a snail-paced two kilometres in 15 minutes. That’s a far cry from 2007 when he and a friend decided to ride around the Port Hills in Christch-urch from sunrise to sunset on the longest day of the year. The Longest Day Ride is now a popular event for mountainbik-ers throughout the country but, sadly, Tama has missed three of them after being diagnosed with arthritis in 2009.The following year, Tama was well enough to ride again and decided that the 2010 edition of The Longest Day Ride would be a fundraiser for Arthritis New Zealand. The ride is now in its fourth year and has raised over $15,000 for the charity, which represents 535,000 sufferers of the 140 forms of arthritis. “I was crippled in 2009, so I missed it that year and said ‘When I’m better I’m going to

do this again. I was an absolute mess, it was hitting me really badly.”When he rode the Longest Day Ride around the Richmond Ranges with David Bonnet in 2010, Tama says it was a way of recapturing his identity because mountainbiking was such a big part of his life. “Not riding, for me, is like not eating – but I’m eyeing up the coming summer and thinking, ‘well maybe I’ll ride…’”Tama crashed out of the 2011 Longest Day Ride on a tricky section of the Wakamarina track, but rode around the route for the Tasman Great Taste Trail in 2012 and from Hanmer Springs to St Arnaud last year. But soon after that ride Tama

started going downhill and was later diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis, a chronic inflamma-tion of the spine and pelvis. His condition is being treated with the drug Humira, which binds to inflammatory cells and “takes them out of action”, but he still suffers from chronic pain and fatigue. Tama, who works as a web archi-tect for Upshift Communications based in Richmond, says most people don’t realise that half of arthritis sufferers are under 65 – but now he’s got the conversation started. Whether he’s there to lead them or not, 100 people will be there in December on the Longest Day, sponsored to ride sunrise to sun-set to ease others’ suffering.

A local charity that ensures no student walks to school with-out shoes is taking big strides – and it’s thanks to the generosity of the community.Walk With Us, a charity set up early last year by eight Nelson businesswomen, helps fund school shoes, sport shoes and socks for local kids whose fam-ilies are in need of some finan-cial support. Walk With Us raised $15,000 at a charity auction at the end of October last year, which ena-bled them to start accepting application forms and get the ball rolling.President Carol Shirley says they were “really excited” with the response from the auction held at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms, and the trust was now busy working with its six pilot schools to get shoes on the feet of students who are in need. “We had been told that some students were com-ing to school with bare feet or wet shoes. There is a big need out there and we keep being told it’s just getting harder and harder financially,” she says.

“One of the ladies had been a teacher and she brought it home that the financial cost is quite significant for some par-ents, so we thought, why don’t we do shoes for children.”The way the process works is that schools will identify when there is a need and an applica-tion form will be sent to the charity. If approved, a voucher goes out to the parents, and they then go to sponsors Stir-ling Sport and Number One

Shoe Warehouse to pick out a pair of footwear. “It all goes through the schools, the teach-er often sees the need and con-tacts the parent. We are quite specific about what they get, they are proper school shoes and proper sports shoes.”She says there has been a “good steady flow” of applicants com-ing through so far, and the charity would look at growing following its next charity auc-tion later in the year.

Lighting up NelsonLight Nelson exceeded all of its or-ganisers’ expectations this year, with 40,000 people visiting over the two nights. With Friday night’s event called off due to rain, most people waited until Sunday to attend Light Nelson, with 30,000 people coming through the

Queens Gardens and surrounds on the final night.Light Nelson featured 40 installa-tions from local and national artists, and in its second year organisers were just hoping to top the crowd of 16,000 from last year, but ended up with much, much more than that.

Madeline Shallcrass, 11, reaches out to touch

the light beams from one of the installations.

Explore the latest trends in sustainable farming through a science-based approach to a wide range of organic techniques and systems.

Ideal for lifestyle block owners, home gardeners and/or commercial growers, this course will provide key knowledge and skills required for organic growing.

Learn to build ecosystems, promote biodiversity and increase soil and plant health, instead of relying on arti cial fertilisers and poisonous sprays.

Topics covered include organic philosophies, certi cation, soil management, soil food webs, composting, companion planting, crop rotation, green manures, weed control, pest and disease management, plant knowledge and an introduction to permaculture.

This knowledge can be applied not only to food crops, but to the cultivation of any plants – from suburban gardens to pastures, orchards, shelter belts and woodlots.

In addition to attending tutorials and workshops or eld trips, students will need to complete practical and theory assignments in their own time.

Some prior knowledge of horticulture and growing plants is recommended although keen beginners are invited to apply.

Although this programme has a horticultural bias, pastoral farmers wishing to get an understanding of what organic farming is all about will also nd this course of value.

On successful completion you will be awarded a Certi cate in Organic Horticulture (Level 3). Networking between organic growing enthusiasts is an added bonus to joining this course.

Note: Minimum numbers required for course to commence.

It’s just in the early stages now, but the newly-formed Nelson Horse Rescue Trust hopes it can soon res-cue unwanted and abused horses around the region.Set up by local woman Felicity Wil-liams last month, the Nel-son Horse Rescue Trust is hoping to secure land so it can begin its work. “Once we’ve got the land we’ll be able to start rescu-ing horses,” she says. “It’s in the very early stages, we just incorporated the trust two weeks ago, but if we can get people on board supporting us then we can get it going as soon as possible.” The scenarios of when a horse will need rescuing include; being mis-treated, or when its owner cannot afford to look after it anymore. “We want to get them in, rehabilitate them and then re-home them and the cost of re-homing them will go towards helping more horses.”Felicity says being able to lease

some land long term “would be perfect” to get the trust into its next stage. Felicity and a silent partner are funding the trust themselves and are welcoming support from po-

tential sponsors. “I’ve got lots of of-fers of help from people and we’re also hoping that once it’s started, that we can get some younger peo-ple in to help learn about horses and how to look after them.”For more information on the Nel-son Horse Rescue Trust, contact Felicity on 022 318 0891.

Queen St businesses:What a joy and delight it is for the residents of Richmond to know

we have another estate agent opening in Queen St. So reassuring, so useful, so con-venient .and soooooo needed. We don’t want the likes of cobblers, tailors, bakers, book retailers, butchers or confectioners cluttering up the main street. No, get the really essential people in, eh.Am I a cynic? You’re sooooooo right I am.Yours cynically, David Cook, Richmond.

Walk for Water:We would like to take this oppor-tunity to thank you for your con-

tinued support and kind donations, which has been making a huge difference to the charity goals. Words cannot express our thankfulness. Thank you very much for your extremely generous donation to the charity. It is greatly appreciated and we can’t thank you enough. You have touched our hearts and our gratitude is overflow-ing. The Waimea Weekly and Nelson Week-

ly team has made the last two ‘Water for Prosperity’ projects possible and we are very thankful and appreciate the support, as it is making a huge difference to the people of Torwood. Many Thanks, Gideon Stephen Matorino and David Alan Barnes.

Thoughts on Light Nelson:Beautiful!Kuraarangi Ropoama.

It was freakin’ awesome-ness. Kids and adults

loved it. Bridget Hobden.

Didn’t even get through standing waiting for an

hour. Amelia Barnsdale.

We just got home from the madness! Think the num-

ber of people there made it hard to see everything. Verity Bartlett.

Thought it was a waste of time left after 20mins of

moving and getting nowhere!! Need to or-ganize directions and movements around gardens. Casey Brown.

Tried to get in, waited for ages. Wish it would stay for another

night or two, would of liked to have seen it! Magan Oliver-Lowe.

Too many peeps to see everything properly, and felt for the elderly.

Very hard for them to navigate their way around. There were too many allowed on the bridge at once. Would have been better if was on longer instead of everyone cram-ming into three nights. But what we did see was awesome. Karen Ferguson.

Very disappointing, think last years’ was way better. And gates not

very organised-staff not knowing what was happening. Pauline Van Der Plas.

Too many people. Hard for the lit-tle ones. Barely any room to move.

I would have loved it if it was on longer so less people. Bonnie Geiger.

Way too busy! Need to have it one way the whole way around. In one

entrance, out the other. Also, it should be for the whole school holidays. Why just one weekend? Cherie Llewellin.

Lighting along the sides of the paths would be helpful... it was a lit-

tle scary not knowing where the steps or edges of the paths were with so many peo-ple crushed together. Lee Punt.

Went last night, had a great time! I enjoyed the flow, that you could go

where you liked etc at your own pace... I think some of the paths could have been illuminated a bit better though, and maybe some people encouraging the crowd to move? Me and my toddler were trying to get a glimpse of something while stand-ing behind two women gasbagging about their great-aunt. We waited ages and they wouldn’t move from the front row, so we went to look at something else. Sarah Kerby.

So glad we didn’t go. Went last year and it was awesome. But having the

first night cancelled, they should have put an extra night on to make up for it. Dave Wassa.

Didn’t enjoy it as way to squashed in and not very good instructions.

I’m sure the lights were cool, but it was madness. Anita Newport.

Thought the venue is far too small for the crowd that attended tonight.

I got sick of being abused for trying to get around with stroller after all it was listed as a family event. Cheryl Remnant.

We got there at 5.30 so left before it got crazy, really enjoyed it! Daugh-

ter went splat a few times cos she couldn’t see steps, but she wasn’t bothered. Great ef-fort by all those involved!! Elaine Lourens.

It was an amazing festival! Thank you to all the artists, volunteers and

organisers! Stephanie Williams.

The Motor Trade Association (MTA) was established in 1917 to create a sustainable business advantage for members and to benefit the motoring public. The organisation represents more than 4000 automotive indus-try professionals and has the whole motor vehicle industry covered from general repair workshops, vehicle sales, service stations, auto electrical to repairers in fields such as automo-tive fuels, collision repair and out-door power equipment. What make the members of the MTA reliable and trusted names are the high standards that must be met and maintained to be a member. MTA members are all highly professional in their field of expertise and are bound by a code of

ethics to ensure they give the motor-ing public the very best service. The Code of Ethics is a yearly certificate given to business owners who abide by specified standards that include providing a high quality and honest service, working with integrity and adhering to MTA rules, by-laws and policies, ensuring all business prac-tices comply with relevant environ-mental laws and regulations, and re-spond to all customer enquiries and seeking to resolve any complaints. As well as working to a strict code of ethics, MTA members must also make a promise to their customers to provide them with superior service and stand by their work in all situa-tions. These requirements have been

the foundation for the MTA’s credible profile and their long estab-lished reputation for excellence. Not only are customers protected by the code of ethics and customer promise, but a free mediation service is

also available for motorists in the rare situation that they are not 100 per cent satisfied with their repair or pur-chase. The mediation service helps to resolve disputes between mem-bers and their customers in a friendly, efficient and unbiased way. The ser-vice has a high rate of success in resolving is-sues and can be requested online at www.mta.org.nz/mediationas-sistance. Using MTA members for all your vehicle needs is a guarantee that you will get the service you expect and it can help you decide on which busi-ness to choose for the sale, purchase or repair of your vehicle. Finding the MTA member nearest to you is easily done through their website. The MTA provide their members with an extensive specialist train-

ing pro-g r a m m e to ensure they are

equipped with the best skills and knowledge to do their job, which ranges from warrant of fitness cours-es for new inspectors and environ-mental regulations to running a small

business. Mem-bers enjoy great services, exclu-sive discounts on products and services to help them run bet-ter businesses and the industry training provided helps them serve customers with a

better skill level. The organisation also plays a big role in stimulating discus-sion amongst stakeholders, govern-ment, regulators and the media on issues that affect its members and the motoring public. The MTA has been representing automotive profession-als and supporting and protecting the interests of the public for almost 100 years and their mission remains the same as it was back in 1917, to provide members, consumers and in-dustry stakeholders with consistently superior service, standards and infor-mation. created for their members is what sets MTA members apart from others in the same field and can mean a weight off your shoulders when it comes to finding a business you can trust. The MTA is governed by a board of directors who meet regularly and the MTA council comprises the board, branch presidents and com-mittee chairs. Wendy Peterson has been recently elected as the MTA President for Nelson after being involved with the Nelson branch committee for around seven years. The Nelson executive is a small group of around six people who work together to organise training and opportunities for the mem-bership in the region. Her role as president will also see her attend meetings with other MTA execu-

tives and represent Nelson nation-ally. “I guess it was the next step for me. I took it as a challenge for me and the chance for some personal development,” says Wendy. “I also enjoy getting a better insight into the workings of the MTA which only an executive position can of-fer.” Wendy and her husband have been a part of the MTA ever since they took over Wakefield Auto Ser-vices and believe in the benefits of the organisation for them as own-ers as well as the public. Wendy can also act as your first port of call for any inquiries or if you would like to request the MTA’s mediation service. To cut a long story short, they are well versed in the ways of the fire-arms industry and are look-ing forward to meeting many other like-minded people through this new venture. Neil and James offer hunt-ers a lifetime of knowledge and are more than happy to give advice on things they’ve learnt over the years to enhance the outdoor ex-periences of their custom-ers. “That’s our motto now,” says Neil. “It’s run by shooters for shooters.” Neil is also a qualified shotgun coach and experienced gun men are not the only ones that The Gun Shop can help when it comes to

getting outdoors. “We can take people clay shooting and tutor them in shooting which also helps them with their hunting and Dad can coach first timers and give them a good all

round service,” says James. “We can put most people on the right path for clay shoot-ing and game shooting too.” As well as being practical hands on shooters with a compre-hensive knowl-edge, The Gun Shop will stock a huge range of products for the everyday hunter or gun man. and binoculars, Swarvoski scopes and Nikon optics. They are a one stop shop for gun en-thusiasts offering services such as re-loading, gun repairs and servicing and fitting scopes. “Basically just the whole nine yards for everything to do with guns,” says Neil. The Gun Shop can talk you through calibres so you know what you need for the shooting you’re doing and

will go a step further by taking willing shooters out to practice with their clay targets, skills which can also be used in any type of hunting. Previously Neil owned a gun shop in England for five years before immigrating to New Zealand but what gives him the edge over others was the huge amount of shooting he did over there, including stalking every

fortnight in Scotland and clay shooting as often as was possi-ble. “Me and my wife were go-ing through 1000 cartridges a week easily,” he says. The Gun Shop will be a unique addition to the Tasman District because it specialises solely in hunting and guns. Simi-lar stores cater to fishing and hunting but Neil and James are proud to provide a range of top

quality products to make outdoor pursuits successful and enjoyable for the seasoned hunter or a begin-ner looking for a full kit out to get started. After 45 years around guns and 25 years in the trade, Neil and James will help you with all of your shooting and hunting requirements. The Gun Shop will be open to the public on July 19 and Neil and James will be cel-ebrating with open-ing specials across the store including 10 per cent off selected Fed-eral Fusion Centrefire Ammunition and re-duced price clothing from Ridgeline in-cluding stay-dry trou-sers and grizzly jack-ets. There are plenty more discounts on clothing, rifles, shot-guns, ammunition and shooting acces-sories so get in quick to check them out and get yourself a bargain. Come in and see the

boys at The Gun Shop opposite KFC on the high street in Motueka. They’ll be open weekdays from 9am-5:30pm and Saturdays from 9am-3pm. For more information on how Neil and James can help you, email them at [email protected] or give them a call on 03 528 4276.

What’s a funeral director’s role? They help arrange and collate all the information provided by the family, ascertain fam-ily wishes, liaise with ministers, celebrants, cemetery, crematorium and council staff, arrange pallbearers, headstones, complete all the official forms, register the death and importantly help relieve family stress so your family can start the grieving process.

Why Anisys? We are small enough to offer you personalised service yet big enough to provide for all the alternatives from full funerals to cremations to natural burials. Fairy TalesMatai Tahi students at Wakefield School are enjoying looking at a range of fairy tales in preparation for their production next term. So they were given a challenge to make a raft or boat for their gingerbread man, who was being chased and had to get across the river to the other side. The children’s crafts were tested in the school swimming pool.

Tasman District Library Book Quiz By Arin and Sarah (Year 5)Recently, a team of four students from Wakefield School took part in the Tasman District Library book quiz. The team of four [Sarah, Arin, Blake and Gian] carefully studied three books, Project Huia, Dunger

and Anzac Day. The team called themselves the Wakefield Hunt-ers. They were all dressed in camo gear and you could hardly recog-nize them. There were 10 other teams participating from Lake Ro-toiti School to Richmond School. The first round of questions was on the book Dunger and was brain-stretchingly hard. The next two rounds were equally as hard. The last round was on general knowl-edge of popular books. When the quiz was over, everyone sat there holding their breath, wait-ing for the name of the winning team to be called. Wakefield was surprised and delighted to hear that they had won for the second year in a row.

Wakefield Bowling Club has re-cently had its two-yearly Bowls NZ “club check” assessment by commu-nity development officer Loraine McLeod and has achieved the gold standard, scoring 104 points from a maximum 105. “This award recog-nises the emphasis your club puts on maintaining the high standard

set,” says Loraine. “I commend you for this and also acknowledge the leaders in the club for your drive and dedication.” Loraine will also be putting Wakefield forward for the Bowls NZ Club of the Year award, which is a significant achievement for the small country club and its proud members.

By Susan Gill, Church on the Hill. Most of us like a comfortable life, don’t we? We’ve worked hard. We deserve our physical comforts. Our preference for comfort often extends beyond the material to relationships and to emo-tional ease.We don’t like to be challenged. We sur-round ourselves with people who make us feel good. We don’t like to confront someone if they have upset us. Any-thing for a quiet life right? Really? Is a quiet life the best we can hope for? Looking back, the places where I’ve been pushed, stretched, challenged, have brought the richest rewards. Those

places of growth and development. Sometimes that involved a lot of kick-ing and struggling on my part as I was dragged reluctantly from the comfort-able now into uncomfortable change.Brené Brown has written a book called Daring Greatly. It’s a great book. What has stuck with me most is the idea of normalising discomfort. Recently I heard that 57% of an aver-age young person’s communication is via technology. This is not all bad. It’s wonderful to be able to Skype, face-book, twitter rellies and friends over-seas. It’s a quick way of keeping up with what’s happening. It’s also an easy way

to avoid the difficult conversations, to avoid truth-telling and truth-receiving. Face to face, honest communication, is best, even if sometimes uncomfortable. Someone said they didn’t think they’d invite Jesus to dinner. You never know what he’d say or do. Jesus is very blunt to those who needed some straight talk; the bullies, the self-righteous, the smart alec know-it-alls. Jesus has no idea what it is to be PC. Jesus thrives on bringing discomfort. (Jesus is always very kind to the vulnerable; to those in trouble though.)I’m slowly learning that discomfort is a good thing. It alerts us to the growing edge; to the places of challenge and po-tential. Wanna grow? Easy. Don’t run from discomfort. Embrace it.

Q: My son’s birthday party is coming upand it is going to be expensive. I’m also a little stressed because my son has been invited to other kid’s birthdays and buying those gifts will also be a strain. Do you have you any suggestions?

A: Keeping up with what you think everyone else expects can take the fun out of the parties for parents. Release yourself from huge expectations and get back to celebrating the birthday.

Try these suggestions:Work out how much you can afford and stick to it.Get your older child involved in planning their birthday

with the budget you have set, letting them make decisions about what they want and what they can do without.DIY as much as possible: cake, food, games and cheap

entertainment (eg.DVD hire)Ask parents not to bring a present for your child, but

instead bring a gold coin OR set a price limit on gifts. Other parents will thank you and can do the same for their child.Forgo the elaborate goodie bags- a piece of cake

wrapped in a serviette is a nice treat to take home.Birthday parties are not a competitive event; don’t buy

into the idea of ‘keeping up with the Joneses’. Truth be told the ‘Joneses’ probably can’t afford everything either.

We offer free, confidential advice for everyone. Send any questions to [email protected]

Your different approach to parties may well start a new trend with the other parents!

Art expo the ‘finest yet’The third annual Art Expo Nel-son brought some of the best artisans out into one space, and the public responded by turning out in their thousands.Project manager Nic Foster says the quality of the work continues to reach new highs, and local at-tendee Maxine McNabb, agrees. “The talent has risen every year.”From etchings to oils, and sculp-ture to fabrics, the different me-diums made for an eclectic col-

lection of the stunning talents.Contributor Jeff Connell says he tries to portray creativity when working on a new piece. “[I’m] always looking at light and land-scape to have convincing spac-es… a painting you can look into and, in your mind’s eye, move around inside it.”And as part of her creative pro-cess, Nelson artist Ruth Vaega says she spent hours observing a robin for one of her etchings.

Many local art enthusiasts found that a valuable highlight of the expo has been the opportunity to speak one-on-one with the creators of the work, to find out more about the story behind each piece.Nic Foster, project manager of the expo, says he is “stoked” with how the weekend unfolded, with 6200 people through the door and art sales up 15 per cent on last year.

A record contingent of Nel-son athletes will represent New Zealand at the Commonwealth Games, and the countdown to Glasgow is nearly up, with the event just over a week away.Cyclist George Bennett has al-ready been ruled out after sus-taining an injury in a crash last month, but ten others from Nel-son will be wearing the silver fern in Glasgow, and some of those for the first time. The Nelson contingent is; Anita Punt (hockey), Julian Matthews (athletics) Amy Mcilory (lawn bowls), Shannon Mcilroy (lawn bowls), Jo Edwards (lawn bowls), Val Smith (lawn bowls) Bryce Heem (rugby sevens), Shannon Francois (netball), Mark Brewer (judo) and Jack Bauer (cycling).

1500m runner Julian Matthews, a former Nelson College student, will be one of those competing at the Commonwealth Games for the first time. Speaking via email from the Athletics NZ athlete’s base in Cardiff, Julian says real-ity has finally sunk in that he will be competing at the Games. “It’s taken a while to sink in, but it has now – I arrived at the Athletics NZ athlete’s base here in Cardiff a couple of days ago and being around all the other team mem-bers has made it more of a reality for me. I’m really looking forward to getting my uniform and being able to try on that black singlet, while trying to keep the pressure of the event at bay for a bit longer, of course,” he says.Julian will be targeting a place

in the 1500m final and will “see what happens” from there. “The 1500 is such an exciting race, it really comes down to the day and tactics, so you never know what might happen.”Coming from a “very sport-ori-entated” family, Julian has always dreamed of someday represent-ing New Zealand since picking up athletics as a 13 year old. “To be able to compete at the Com-monwealth Games is such an honour – I am so excited to be able to represent my country at an international event, and espe-cially one that is close to so many Kiwis’ hearts.”

Nelson’s best hopes of a gold medal, outside of the rugby sev-ens team, lie with veteran bowlers Jo and Val. Jo won a gold medal in the pairs in 2002, while Val finished second in the singles in 2010. The duo, who are good mates off the green, are teaming up in the pairs this year and have a proven track record at interna-tional events. The next best prospect is Anita and the women’s Black Sticks hockey team. Anita, who is one of the most experienced players in the team with 155 caps, has been scoring for fun in recent in-ternationals and was part of the squad which won a silver medal in Dehli.Amy and Shannon have the unique story of being husband

and wife, as well as members of the New Zealand lawn bowls team. When she was named in the squad to attend her first Com-monwealth Games, Amy said she just wanted to make her family proud, and would be thinking of her late uncle and poppa when competing. “My biggest thing is definitely doing this for my fam-ily, and my mum and dad are coming over to watch.”An eleventh Nelson athlete will attend in the games, but he won’t be wearing a silver fern. Former Tasman Makos number eight Mark Bright, now 35 years old, has gained selection in the Eng-land rugby sevens team after im-pressing last month. The 2014 Commonwealth Games begin on July 23.

The Tasman Rugby Union has select-ed 27 players to contest a two match pre-season tour, as selectors weigh up the final spots in the Tasman Makos squad. The Emerging Players squad will take on Canterbury and Otago in ITM Cup warm-up matches on July 30 and August 2.The squad comprises of 11 returning

Tasman Makos and 16 rising stars from the senior rugby competition.Waimea Old Boys have five players -- Tevita Cabuvati, Jeff Lepa, Peter Samu, Billy Guyton and Marty Banks -- while Wanderers have seven select-ed -- Tyler Kearns, Siosiua Halanu-konuka, Alex Ainley, Tone Ng Shiu, Dwayne Polataivao, Trael Joass and Fletcher Matthews.

Other Nelson-based players include Marist prop Reuben Northover, Nel-son backs David Havili, Mitchell Scott, Ben Tyler and Robbie Malneek, and Kahurangi first-five Mike Wells. Marlborough players make up the fi-nal nine spots. The 2014 Golden Edge Tasman Ma-kos will be named on Monday, August 4.

Women chase 10s crown

Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys will be chasing their first Car Company division two title since 2009 when they take on Taylor’s Contracting Wanderers at Trafalgar Park this Saturday.Just three of the starting line-up – Michael Bates, Tim Fenson and Paul Burt – were part of that squad, but co-coach Wayne Bateman be-lieves his young side have what it takes to bring the silverware back to the club after they knocked off Collingwood on Saturday. “We’re quite confident. Just like after Sat-urday’s game we didn’t get over-awed. The boys know they’ve got a job to do this Saturday,” he says.”

Waimea Old Boys were in the final last year, but lost by just one point to champions Murchison. But with a lot of new faces, it’s hard to know whether Waimea Old Boys will be better from that experience or not.Wanderers head into the game unbeaten, and got the better of Waimea Old Boys 18-14 earlier in the season so, as expected, Wayne says his side will be underdogs. “It was quite early in the season and we had a shocker. But to me they go in as favourites because they’re unbeaten this season since the first round.”The match kicks off at Trafalgar Park at 1pm.

Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys captain Ben Coman says his side is excited to be back in the Car Company division one final, while Wanderers captain Jesse Pitman is hoping his team can right the wrongs of last year.Wanderers are justifiably the top team heading into the de-cider. They’ve beaten Waimea Old Boys twice already this season and finished the round robin in first place. But Waimea Old Boys come into the game on the back of some impressive form. They’ve won nine games in a row, in-cluding a win over Tasman Trophy champions Waitohi -- a feat no other team managed in 2014. “Wanderers have set

the bar pretty high this season, but we are excited about the occasion and we’re probably not putting too much weight or bearing on the fact that we won last year. We respect them as a side and we respect what they’ve done this year.”Last year, Waimea Old Boys were led by fullback James Lowe, who often ignited their exciting back line. But this year it’s a hulking forward pack which drives the team around the field. “We’ve lost some of our key Super Rugby players, but it’s probably made us work a lot harder for each other. We

know that without them we’ve had to dig deep to win games and that puts us in pretty good stead.”Like Waimea Old Boys, Wan-derers have big ball-running forwards and some exciting backs, and captain Jesse Pit-man says his team is better from the experience of losing 51-22 in the final last year. “We talked last year about the three year plan but we just weren’t ready. For a few of us it was our first final and we got a bit overawed by the occasion,” he says. “But we’ve learnt so much in the last year and we’re look-ing forward to putting that into practice come finals time.” The division one final kicks off at 3pm at Trafalgar Park.

If Waimea Old Boys women beat Marist this weekend it’ll be six years in a row that they’ve finished the season as champions.2014 saw the introduction of rugby tens instead of the 15-a-side format which Waimea had been so dominant in over the past five years, and with just one loss to their name heading into the final weekend of matches, Waimea are the frontrun-ners to win the title again. The final round of rugby tens will be played at Neale Park, starting with Waimea Old Boys ver-

sus Stoke, and Riwaka versus Marist at 12noon. It will then be followed by the Waimea Old Boys versus Marist final at 1pm, and another game be-tween Riwaka and Stoke. If Waimea can win both their games, the title is theirs. In fact, Marist would have to beat them by a considerable margin to have any hope of pinching first place. “We’ve beaten them twice and they’ve beaten us once,” says Waimea coach Steve Curtis. “There is no final but the result of this game will decide the title.”

Richmond’s largest sports club is preparing to celebrate its 50th anniversary next month.Richmond Athletic Football Club was founded when two clubs merged and, while its origins are a little hazy, what is known is the year club stalwart Roy Oddy was voted in as the club’s first president – 1964.Current president, Stu Reid, is leading the or-ganising efforts of the 50th celebrations and says it will honour its history as a laid-back, family-friendly club that has fostered the love of the game for thousands of locals.“Many of us grew up around the clubrooms at Jubilee Park, and it’s always been a club that has accepted and involved players and supporters of all ages and abilities.”The 50th anniversary will be held on the week-end of August 29 and 30. On Friday night there will be a meet and greet at the clubrooms on Jubilee Park, before a past verses present game on Saturday and a celebra-tion dinner at Club Waimea later that night.Anyone interested in attending any of the events – not just former or current club mem-bers – can contact Stu via email at [email protected] or phone him on 027 471 4619.

Waimea College 10A made every post a winning one when they competed at the South Island Secondary Schools Junior Tournament held in Christchurch during the week. Waimea swept all before them as they amassed 293 goals for and only 155 against in eight games. That equates to an impressive aver-age of 36 goals for and a mere 19 against. As the tournament got down to the “nitty gritty”, the op-

position became stronger. Waimea defeated St Marga-ret’s 26-22 in the quarter-final in order to meet Villa Maria in the semi-final. It was a very tight start, going goal for goal. The formidable defensive duo of Louise Walker and Lauryn Davenhill toiled tirelessly to break the rhythm of Villa’s shooters. At the other end of the court Amiee Book was standing up against the pres-sure to calmly convert 92% of her shots, which paved the way to a 28-24 win and a berth in the final. The final was against South-land Girls and had intensity

from the first whistle. With the teams trading goals, they could not be separated at the first break. Tips and inter-cepts by Lauryn Davenhill and Lauryn Hippolite were

smartly converted. Great defensive pressure and patience on attack, with Ai-mee dominating the offensive circle, saw Waimea claim the title 34–20.
