The backers of a proposed mot-orsports and adventure park near Tapawera are holding a meeting in Nelson next month to present their plans for the park and form a working group to "facilitate the project".The New Zealand Central Mo-torsports and Adventure Park was granted resource manage-ment planning permission by the Environment Court last month. for their two acre home in Maha-na and its extensive rose garden. Letty was the first to get into the hobby, attending a rose society meeting with Norm’s aunt in early 1962. The second meeting she at-tended, Letty was voted on to the committee and has been there ever since. Norm soon became an expert grower and was known for tend-ing to the rose gardens outside the Mapua Public Hall and RSA hall in Mapua. Letty says one of the more humor-ous moments for her was when a friend invited her to a rose soci-ety show in Nelson at late notice. “It was quite late in the afternoon

when he asked me so I just picked one single rose out of our garden. He picked me up and the boot and back seat of his car were chocka with roses that he’d spent all day preparing.“My rose won the convention cup and all of his roses didn’t get anywhere. I couldn’t believe it and that really got me going on more competitions.”Letty and Norm have moved off their two acre section to a much smaller home in Summerset Vil-lage in Stoke. They say they’re still keen to make their mark with ros-es. “At our old home in Mahana we had 300 roses, the whole range of them. We haven’t got many here yet but I intend to do something about that,” smiled Letty.

quarters. Many of the groups are struggling to find suitable venues to hold their events and the Tapawera park will be an ideal solution."Quite of few of the motorsport guys, like the drags, have nowhere to go and they are super-keen to see this go ahead," Dave says. "But it also needs to be a hub for rec-reational activities - we need things that will attract people to the park during the week and at this stage we have an open mind about what we will put there."Dave says the project had initially been estimated to cost around $26 million, although the final figure

is likely to be considerably less be-cause they could make significant savings on constructing the sealed racing circuit. One of the first tasks of the working group will be to determine what stages of the de-velopment need funding and how to raise the funds. "We thought it would cost around $12 to $14 mil-lion to build the track and then we found out the Cromwell track only cost $4 million. They saved a lot of money by doing the preliminary earthworks themselves so we can probably do the same thing." The meeting will be held at the Honest Lawyer on June 26 starting at 7pm. Anyone interested in the project is welcome to attend.

Man escapes house fireA 73 year old man is taken to an ambulance after his house on Main Rd Stoke, next to Saxton Lodge, caught fire on Monday evening. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

A 73 year old man lost his home after it caught fire on Monday evening, but he man-aged to escape with just minor injuries. The man was found in the backyard of his Main Rd Stoke home by an off duty paramedic and was taken to hospital where he was treated for minor burns and the smoke inhalation. He also had singed hair.It is unknown how the fire started, but a full investigation was to begin yesterday. At the scene, Nelson station officer Darren Shackleton con-firmed the man was alone at

the time, and that he had re-ceived “some facial burns”. “He’s being treated in an ambu-lance now on site,” says Darren. “He’s got a bit of smoke inhala-tion so he’s wheezing.”Darren says the internal dam-age was “quite significant”. The fire service was called out around 4:20pm when the house was fully ablaze. “There were flames coming out of the windows. But it was con-trolled very quickly, in about 20

minutes.” The house is situated right next to Saxton Lodge and there was a danger that the fire could have spread. “Potentially, but it was well contained, particu-larly on this side.”Several members of the pub-lic reported the house fire and Darren says that was a good message. “The more 111 calls we receive the [higher] chance we know it’s a proper working job.”Main Rd Stoke was closed be-tween Polstead Rd and Saxton Rd during the fire, which meant traffic had to be diverted.

NEWSin briefKIDS INJECTED WITH DUD VACCINE: The district health board has apologised after 87 children were injected with a dud vaccine which had been exposed to cold temperatures, rending it ineffective. Vac-cines should be stored at temperatures between two and eight degrees but some were stored in a chilly bin that went belowzero on a journey to the schools, says Nel-son Marlborough medical officer of health,Dr Ed Kiddle.

VINYL RECORD SALE A SUCCESS: Ro-tary Club of Nelson’s Giant Vinyl Sale was a big success, raising $2000 for Big Broth-ers Big Sisters. The idea for the sale came about when a member of the rotary club was given an estate lot of records. There were nearly 10,000 records for sale at the Stoke Memorial Hall, with other members of the public donating “trailer loads”.

LOCAL WINS POWERTALK AWARD: Lo-cal POWERtalk Waimea club member, Nissa Elsey, was quite overcome when, at the NZ Region POWERtalk International biennial conference held in Auckland last week, she was announced as New Zea-land Region ‘Person of the Year’. Nissa also gained first place in the fiction category of the NZ Region Writing Contest and her winning entry, “Moonlight Escapade”, will now go forward to represent New Zealand at international level.

With young musical talent belting out well-crafted original tunes for three hours on Friday night, it seemed like the judges might have had a hard time find-ing ten finalists for the Smokefreerock-quest regional finals. In years gone by, a clear front runner generally emerges from the heats, but a new solo/duo format and a record num-ber of entries meant that simply wasn’t the case this year.Thirty acts representing every second-ary school from Nelson through to Golden Bay took part in the 26th year of Smokefreerockquest, with alt-pop synths, death-core howls, soulful vocals and mind-melting guitar solos giving the sold-out Theatre Royal audience an array of entertainment.Ryan Beehre of Minuit had the tough task of picking tens bands from the heats to come back for this Friday night’s final, but deciding just two solo/duo acts to join them was always going to leave more agony than joy. Last year’s solo/duo winner Livvy and Anna, who this year went under the name ELAE, were the biggest omission as Garin College’s Gabriella Atkinson and Nelson College for Girls’ Zi Shaw claimed the two spots and will now play

off for first and second. The Nelson final is at the Theatre Roy-al this Friday starting at 7pm. Tickets are $10 for school students and $20 for adults from Ticket Direct or at the venue, and event founder Glenn Common is en-couraging people to get in quick as it will sell out.Bands through to the finals include; Aeon Venture (Garin College), Fire Without

Permit (Nelson College, Waimea Col-lege), OH BLOK (Garin College, Nelson College), Paper Scissors (Motueka High School), Rictorscale (Motueka High School), Slim Conviction (Garin Col-lege, Nayland College, Waimea College), Toxic Vain (Waimea College), Velocity (Nelson College), Celestia (Garin Col-lege) and Westbrook (Nelson College, Garin College, Nayland College).

With 110 entries received for the Trustpower Nelson Tas-man Community Awards, locals have really got behind their volunteers. The Trustpower Nelson Tas-man Community Awards,

which recognise and reward voluntary groups for the out-standing contribution they make to the local community, are run in partnership with the Nelson City and Tasman District Councils. Entries

for the Community Awards closed on Friday May 9.The awards cover five cat-egories; heritage and environ-ment, health and wellbeing, arts and culture, sport and leisure, and education and

child/youth development. The category winners receive $500 and runners-up receive $250. The Supreme Winner will take home $1,500 and an all-expenses paid trip to the national final.

Nelson Police have recovered nearly $200,000 worth of fines and reparations.A three day operation, called Operation Coun-try Roads 2, focused on drink driving and the collection of outstanding fines and reparations owed to victims of crime. Between Friday and Sunday, police and bailiffs visited about 100 Nelson and Tasman addresses in an attempt to locate people with outstanding fines and reparation owing. Bailiffs seized 11 vehicles and a range of prop-erty including cash, Xbox, cameras, guitars, cell phone, a TV and other personal assets. The total collected was $196,206, with $30,960 of that be-ing reparations owed to victims. The operation was part of an ongoing initiative between police and the Ministry of Justice and was the second joint operation in six weeks.Senior sergeant Grant Andrews says people need to be aware that if they left fines or repa-rations unpaid there was a very real risk they would have other property seized in lieu of that payment. As a result of the operation six people will also be facing drink driving charges. Grant says po-lice were disappointed at the high level of in-toxication of these drivers with the majority exceeding 800mg/l of alcohol, double the legal limit, and still choosing to drive. One of these drivers was involved in a non-injury crash at Motueka.

Police are seeking help from the public to locate Richmond man Terry Jones in rela-tion to a drug investigation. The 44 year old is a New Zealand European who is 175 cm tall and has a distinctive birthmark on his left cheek.Police believe he may be able to as-sist them with their on-going en-quiries regarding Operation Genoa. More than $3 million in assets, in-cluding a Ferrari, Porsche and Ma-

serati, were seized during police searches across the country earlier this month as part of the operation - a lengthy investigation into the manufacture and supply of methamphetamine in the Auckland region. He is believed to be somewhere in the Nelson re-gion.Anyone with information which can assist with the whereabouts of the Richmond man is asked to contact Police on 021 191 6094.

Shannon Mcilroy reckons he plays pretty well if his wife Amy is watching, so her inclusion in the New Zealand lawn bowls squad for the Commonwealth Games might just be his secret advan-tage. “I always look over and she does a sign or starts giggling. She’ll do something to make me get an ex-tra five or ten per cent,” he says. Both Shannon and Amy will be competing in Glasgow, the first time the husband and wife duo have gone together to a major event, after Mr Mcilroy represent-ed New Zealand in Delhi in 2010. “It’ll be pretty cool if I’m playing on a green and Amy is playing on the other and I can look over and see how things are going.”Coach Dave Edwards sat the pair down at the same time when an-nouncing the team for Glasgow, and Shannon and Amy say that was the biggest giveaway that they would both be going. “Well it was either we’re both going or neither of us are,” says Amy.She says it seems “unreal” consid-ering they both met through lawn bowls years ago. “Now we’re mar-ried and going to the Common-wealth Games, I did not picture that happening at all.”Shannon, who plays for the Stoke Bowling Club, has been selected in the singles and triples. In the

latter he will be joined by Ali For-syth, who is originally from Nel-son, and Tony Grantham. Amy, who plays for the United Bowling Club, will be in the tri-ples and fours. At 23 years old she is the “old duck” in the triples, and will play alongside Nelson’s Val Smith in the fours. When asked what she was look-ing forward to most in Glasgow, Amy says she just wants to make

her family proud, and would be thinking of her late uncle and poppa when competing. “I just want to make everyone proud, perform well and if the outcome is a gold, silver or bronze medal then that’s a bonus.”She also wants to help inspire the children at the pre-school where she works in Richmond. “I want to show them that anything you set your mind to you can achieve.”

Volunteer firefighter Mark Janssen achieved his goal of improving his time in the Sky Tower Stair Challenge in Auckland on Saturday, racing up 51 floors and 1103 stairs wearing 25 kilograms of fire fighting equipment in 13 minutes 19 seconds. That was almost two minutes faster than the last time he completed the challenge, which is a fundraiser for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand, in 2011. Mark was one of 700 firefighters from around New Zealand and Australia to compete in Saturday’s event, which is aiming to raise $1 million for the charity.Mark, who works in Richmond, says he recorded a faster time because he trained a lot harder and, with the help of ASB Aquatic and Fitness centre trainer Andrew Kennedy, a lot smarter, for this year’s event. But Mark concedes no amount of training could prepare him for the 13 minutes and 19 seconds of leg and lung-burning agony he endured on Saturday. “I’ve been train-ing with Andrew since February and he’s been pushing me really hard. I’ve been do-ing beach training, interval training and running up stairs but that was nothing compared to racing up the Sky Tower - I

was absolutely ruined,” Mark says. Although Mark finished over three minutes behind the winner of the masters section, Melbourne’s Scott McGraw, and more than four minutes behind overall winner Otara’s John Harrison, who clocked 8 minutes 36 seconds, he received plenty of accolades for being the top fundraiser. Mark says he had amazing support from businesses and individuals around the Nelson-Tasman region and on the West Coast and that helped him raise $13,208 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zea-land. Mark’s efforts were recognised at the awards function held in Sky City on Sat-urday night when he was presented with a trophy. “I just want to say a huge thanks to everyone who was part of the Nelson fun-draising campaign. To be awarded the tro-phy for raising the most funds was amazing but the trophy doesn’t belong to me, it be-longs to the Nelson community.“Everyone who I approached was so posi-

tive and generous. Total Oil, Hydraulink and Ewing Poultry were really generous but so many more gave $100 or $200 or what-ever they could.”Mark says he also received great support from his partner Nyanne Graf and the Nel-son and Mapua fire brigades. Nyanne, a for-mer member of the Mapua Voluntary Fire Brigade, often trained with Mark while the Mapua brigade’s deputy chief, Alby Wyatt, helped arrange donations. Mark says another highlight of the week-end was meeting three young cancer suffer-ers for a photo shoot at the Auckland Fire Station. The photo will go on the back of the next Firefighters’ Calendar which is a fundraiser for Child Cancer.“I was selected for this year’s Firefighters’ Calendar and they gave all of us some of the proceeds to use to travel to competitions like the Sky Tower Challenge. But I gave all the money to Child Cancer and when we finished the photo shoot the youngest boy came up to me and hugged my leg and said thanks - it was so emotional.”Mark is keen to have a third attempt at the Sky Tower Stair Challenge and also wants to try and organise a Tasman team.

Two Tapawera neighbours, Emma Panting and Lisa White, had a big night at the prestigious Marl-borough Art Society Peters Doig Awards in Blenheim on Saturday, winning two of the six awards. Lisa won the Supreme Award and prize of $3000 for her oil painting of her mother Mary Devries from Canada, titled The Artist's Mother, while Emma won the Seymour Pic-ture Framing Award for her graph-ite and acrylic on linen study Find-ing Solace. Artists from around New Zealand had applied to enter the awards, sending photographed copies of the works to a three-member judg-ing panel for selection. Only 150 entries were accepted, with Lisa and Emma winning two of the five awards available to artists outside

Marlborough."I've entered the awards four times now and only had my entries ac-cepted twice so I was just happy to have it in there. It's a national award so it's easily my biggest award yet - it was very exciting and very unex-pected," Lisa saysLisa says she painted the portrait when her mother was in New Zea-land for Christmas in 2013. "When I finished I was a bit nervous about it and didn't want to show it to her but she really liked it. My sis-ter and I Facetimed her right away to say that the portrait had won the award."Lisa graduated with a Bachelor of Visual Art and Design from NMIT in 2009. A final People's Choice Award will be awarded on June 8.

Karen Doouss has been practicing Dentistry for over 20 years; she began her practice at Richmond Dental (Ferguson, Leathley) after graduating but reluctantly retired due to a bat-tle with chronic pain. Two years later Karen is back practicing dentistry after two spinal surgeries and a miracle brain retraining course. Karen provides general dentistry services, specialising in amalgam free restorations (white fillings). She is also able to offer Intravenous sedation to anxious patients.Karen appreciates the importance of providing an immediate service to people when they come to see her but by practicing preventative dentistry Ka-ren is able to educate her clients about long term solutions to keep their mouths and teeth healthier. Karen offers a ho-listic approach to Dentistry. She is passionate about helping people get their oral health up to date while educating them on how to maintain health for the future. It is important to her that patients feel empowered. The option of intrave-

nous sedation means people who struggle with anxiety at the dentist are able to overcome their fears and receive the assistance they need. She feels it is a valuable service to provide. She has

also helped people to stop smoking and as a side busi-ness in Nutritional Cleans-ing has helped people im-prove their overall health and lose weight. In regards to Dentistry nutritional cleansing can help people gain a new level of resil-ience which can be help-ful when making lifestyle changes. You can check out her website www.karenhes-lop1.isagenix.com. “We don’t have to be per-fect,” says Karen. “But there are simple steps we can take towards being health-ier. Sometimes by adjusting one or two things we can make a huge difference.”

Karen shares her expert knowledge and ser-vices with three dental practices in the Nelson region. You can find her at Advanced Dental in Nelson, One Dental in Mapua or Dental care in Richmond.

Walking the South Island:It will be interesting to see updates on how he is

doing while he is walking. Good luck and I hope you have a good pair of walking shoes. Sounds like a fun adventure. Julia Lines.

Fire near Saxton Motels:Geez! I hope he’s doing alright now? How did the

fire start? Poor guy. Jae Walter.

House looks familiar to me too, can’t forget those

coloured bricks. ShLyla Taylor.

Just what you don’t bloody need take care old man.

Odette Jackson.

Dreadful thing to happen hope he has a supportive

family to look after him. Brenda Kenny.

I’ve meet the guy in that house, quite a character.

Adrian Lindup.

My young kids were scared of this house with

all the writing. It always looked abandoned. Shay Wilson.

Wood burners for Nelson:NO! For several reasons, I don’t think they should.

I can understand that people want to be able to choose, how-

ever we went through the coun-cil imposed process a few years ago. Took out a perfectly good fire and followed all the rules... at our cost! We will be paying it back at $90 a quarter in our rates, for another seven years! We burn dry wood and our previous fire did not smoke as much as most, even before we changed. I note a comment by Tristan Fish in this week’s Waimea Weekly, re load-ing up the fire. It’s burning habits such as these that caused the pol-lution problem in the first place. It also sounds like he’s burn-ing green wood. Yes, the fires burn differently, that’s the point. I would rather see the council consider subsidising HRV, solar heating and retrofit double-glaz-ing then put any more money and effort into this issue. If the rules are relaxed, there will be a lot of ratepayers who were forced to go through a process that they are still paying for who may demand some compensa-tion. F Watts.

We had 13 members from our darts section compete in the Sedddon Shield tournament in Hokitika.Tai Williams, Doug and Marie George, Karen and Zane Thomas, Pat Blackwell, Stan Reid, Dean Robinson, Alan Smolenski, Bob Wren, Chris McCauley, Steve Rad-cliffe and Arch Barcley. The Ladies Pair was won by Tai Williams and Marie George with the Ladies Pair Plate being award-ed to Karen Thomas and Pat Black-well.The Ladies Singles competition was won by Tai Williams while Marie George made it to the semi-finals main round. Karen Thomas also made it to the semi-finals in the plate round.

In the Men’s Singles, Alan Smolen-ski and Doug George made it to the semi-finals while Bob Wren and Zane Thomas made it to the semi final in the men’s plate round.Mixed Pair, Alan Smolenski and Tai Williams made it to final where they finished in second place and Men’s Pair, Stan Reid and Dean Robinson came second in the plate round. The Club Waimea darts team en-joyed great success during the tournament and we all had a great time in Hokitika. Everybody that went played well and really en-joyed themselves. Next year the Seddon Shield will be held at home at Waimea and will be a great event to host and be a part of.

From Model T’s to American muscle and just about everything in between. These were the choice of rides for the 16 crews that tackled this year’s Club Waimea Nov-elty Car Rally. While the V8 powered ma-chinery may have been superior in the up-hill sections of the course, slow and steady was the order of the day when the results were finally tallied. After five years of gentle country jaunts, a change of tack by the organisers saw com-

petitors navigating their way over a course that took in Tahunanui, the Port Hills, and the environs in and around Nelson City. In the process, crews were treated to what was essentially a history lesson as they visited many of the historical spots that are a huge part of the make-up of the city such as Bish-ops School, the Dun Mountain Railway and the site of New Zealand’s first rugby match.Add to that historical homes, cemeter-ies and historically listed trees and build-

ings, giving competitors an insight into the city’s history. To add to the confusion not all questions that were to be answered on route, 60 in total, were of a historic nature; the organiser throwing in numerous cryptic questions to further test crew’s brain power. With the course covering less than 62 km, time proved to be more of a factor than dis-tance, particularly as it crisscrossed itself often not to mention the complex nature of the instructions, especially in and around

the city area. Many crew’s almost pushed out to the three hour time limit in an effort to complete the course. Despite this and the threat of pending divorce proceedings in some cases, crew’s admitted to a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon’s fun, most promising to return next year in an effort to outwit the organiser’s obviously warped brain. First place were The Wizards, followed by Five Gees and a Tee and in third place were the Four Musketeers.

A Mother’s Day High Tea at the Boathouse Cafe has helped raise about $1600 for the Alzheimer’s Society of Nelson but organisers say they need more funds to keep providing their services around the Nelson-Tasman re-gion.One in three New Zealanders are affected by some form of dementia and it invariably has a big impact on their family and friends. Alzheimer’s Society of Nelson receives Min-istry of Health funding but still needs an additional $80,000 to help cover the cost of employing three fieldworkers and provide a range services to support people afflicted by the disease and their carers. One of the organisers of the High Tea, Aileen

Rodley says Alzheimer’s Society of Nelson is fortunate to have a dedicated band of about 40 volunteers to help out the field workers. Many of them have more than 20 years of service including Olive Jeffries who has been helping out for 25 years. “We do it because we like helping people and we know we make a difference,” Olive says. “But it can be hard at times because you often get emotion-ally attached to the families you are helping.”Jill McKnight says they couldn’t operate suc-cessfully without their volunteers. They also received great support from the community.Jill says anyone interested in becoming a vol-unteer can contact the society’s Nelson office on 546 7704.

By Steve Rollo, Richmond Church of Christ. Last week my wife and I joined several hun-dred proud parents, grandparents, partners and friends watching graduating Victoria Uni students parade down the main street of Wel-lington. Followed by their graduation ceremony and re-ceiving their hard earned degrees. You could debate who had the biggest smile, the students marching in their hired gradua-tion gowns, or the proud parents and support-ers watching. No debate from me, I was proud of my son with his two degrees.During the graduation ceremony one of the speakers congratulated the students then said, “now you are just a small fish in a big ocean”. Was that an encouraging statement? I thought it was unfair on students who studied hard. Many like our son were already working in their chosen field, while others are looking for that dream job. The goal of many is to make a difference in this world, some for themselves and their families, while some dream of being that famous person that becomes mentioned in history. But what really counts in life ?The bible tells us that we can speak with elo-quence, we can have great faith, even if we give away all we have but do not have love we are nothing. The bible also teaches what real love is, and that God’s love is a free gift that leads to eternal life.

Just a thought...

One lucky bride will have the chance to win a dream wedding pack-age prize along with plenty of spot prizes, as well as a major door prize of a dia-mond pendant sponsored by Jens Hansen. Each bride will receive a goody bag upon entry. The Nelson Wedding Show of-fers you a rare opportunity

What’s in a name?Visitors to Stoke possibly wonder just how the locality came to receive its name and why roads came to be called Nayland Road, Polstead Road, Songer Street and, a little further afield, Torlesse Street. The name of Stoke was given by William Songer who was the first settler here. He came from Stoke-by-Nayland in Suffolk (in the sheep country of East Anglia). Polstead was a nearby village. When the New Zealand Company’s Second Settlement (Nelson) Expedition ships were leav-ing England the farewell sermon was preached by the Vicar of Stoke-by-Nayland, the Rev. C. M. Torlesse. Charles Torlesse, brother of Harriet Bridges, went to Stoke in 1823. His wife, Catherine Gurney (born 1793), was the eldest child of Edward Wakefield and so was a sister of the Wakefields who founded the New Zealand Company settlements. Their eldest son, also Charles, came out with the Nelson Expedition and later was a surveyor, more notably in Canterbury.William Songer who had been the gardener at Stoke-by-Nayland came out as a personal at-tendant upon Captain Wakefield, while his wife, who had been the nurse who brought up (he Torlesse family, came out as a matron on one of the emigrant ships.Mrs Torlesse owned land in New Zealand which was cared for by Songer and she used to send out seeds for him to plant. It is reasonable to believe that some of the old trees in the area owe their origin to this source. Greenmeadows

She was welcomed by both female and male patients. Audrey has huge experience in women’s health and this has been a real asset to Wakefield. There have been many changes in the health sec-tor and Wakefield Health Centre during these 20 years. A big change has been the introduction of computers for all forms of the day to day record-ing of patient contacts, and recording of patient health problems. Also the Health Centre has be-come Cornerstone Accredited, to Royal NZ Col-

Volunteer Fire Brigade honours Geoff ShearerFritz Buckendahl Chief Fire OfficerThe Wakefield Volunteer Fire Brigade has re-cently celebrated Geoff Shearer’s Gold Star award at the Wakefield village hall. Geoff has spent 25 years volunteering with the New Zea-land Fire Service and this award is generally the pinnacle of achievement for most brigade mem-bers. Once you join a brigade, the first recognition received is the three year certificate. After five years service you receive a silver medal. There-after, for every two years service you receive a silver bar that goes with your silver medal. At twenty five years of service you receive the gold star medal and a gold bar is awarded for every two years that you serve from then on. It is a very small reward for all the hours of training the members put in each week, each year, as well as going to the calls-outs rain or shine and at all times day or night. However every brigade member gets great satisfaction when they have been able to help a member of the public.

Throughout the school holidays, builders have been working very hard on Rooms 1 and 2 at Wakefield School to transform them into an amazing modern learning environment for the Tahi Totara Syndicate. The building looks amazing. It is enormous, bright, modern, spa-

cious with a beautiful deck round the back and very different from

the old classrooms. The students and teachers are loving it. There will be an opening day for the new classrooms on 23 May.

Parents and community are invit-ed to come and look around the amazing 21st century classrooms.

He says he used to be able to run but now he can only walk and needs his wheelchair more.

Students from Wakefield school paid $2 to enjoy mouth-watering sausages. They also had a wheels day and got to use their bikes, scooters, skate-boards and rollerblades in a fun way.It was a great success. “We raised about $800. Everyone at Wakefield school enjoyed their day, especial-ly me,” says Liam.

New church a landmark for Stoke:Elim strongly believes that church is not a building, it is the people. That being said, Elim Christian Centre, and its people, are pretty proud of their new $1.5 million fa-cility on Main Rd Stoke.Work began on the project last year and it

will be officially opened this Friday, May 23, by Nelson MP Nick Smith. And at the 10am service this Sunday, the national leader of Elim, Pastor Mike Griffiths, will be speaking. The new facility houses a 220 seat main auditorium, office and admin-istration block, meeting and conference

room for up to 70 people, and will allow for expansion of its popular PowerZone after-school and holi-day programmes. Church pastor Richard Batchelar says the new building will cater for future growth of the church, while

also giving the com-munity a new facil-ity. “We’re looking into running com-munity lunches in the future and now we have the kitchen facilities to do that. The mul-tipurpose functionality also gives us the ability to run quality courses, seminars and events for the commu-nity. We can now cater for those things much better.” Elim regularly runs courses on a variety of topics in-cluding budgeting, parent-ing, boundaries, life skills and relationships. They are keen to continue to expand the community courses and activities they offer, and are looking to put on music and creative arts events in the fu-ture. The facility will also be used by community groups, such as Stoke School, and Richard says that was an important part of the build.

“We’re a church that is all about people and this new building allows us to inter-act with people better. It is a great, high-quality facility, and will be a huge asset to our community”

Community Open DayOn Saturday June 14, from 10am-2pm, the entire Elim Christian Centre site, includ-ing the ElimKids Preschool and the new facility will be opened to the public. Dur-ing the community open day, members of the public can come and check out the new facility, and find out more about what Elim does, while the kids play on bouncy castles, enjoy a sausage sizzle and perfor-mances by various community groups.

in the main centres. About 10,000 peo-ple throughout New Zealand attend Elim Churches. The Elim Pentecostal church in the United Kingdom has more than 500 churches and there are more than 9000 Elim churches worldwide. Elim Church on Main Rd Stoke, has been a fixture of the community for decades, providing a safe place for locals, a helping hand and a place for children to have fun. Richard and Maria Batchelar have pastored the Nelson church since January 2007, and have a heart to see the church become a centre of hope for the community. Since then, the church has continued to expand the services it provides to the community. Elim Christian Cen-tre, as it is now known, is home to high quality child care including ElimKids Preschool, PowerZone After School Care and Holiday Programmes. ElimKids Preschool provides care for children 6 months to 5 years, Monday to Friday 7.45am-5pm. PowerZone Af-ter School Care runs during school terms 3.00-5.30pm and offers a free pick-up service from stoke schools. The Holiday Programmes run 2 weeks in every school holidays, with half and full days available. PowerZone programmes are CYF & OS-CAR approved. The church also runs a variety of com-munity courses, runs a “soup in schools” programme in Stoke school during terms 2 & 3, and runs “The Wardrobe” annually, where they give away thousands of do-

nated secondhand maternity & chil-dren’s clothing, toys, and equip-ment for free.Pastor Richard Batchelar says the church is going strong and will con-tinue to look at expanding the ways it can serve the community as it grows. “The challenge for us is this: If we

closed our doors tomorrow, would the community no-tice. And I believe it would. People matter to us, because they matter to God. The Bible says that Jesus came that people would have life, and have it to the full (John 10:10). Our aim is to serve God by loving people, to en-courage them, to equip and support them to live a full

life with fulfilment and purpose.”

“It is exciting times. We are really look-ing forward to this next season in the

life of Elim Christian Centre. If you don’t already attend a church, why don’t you come and check us out. We look forward to meeting you!”

The only thing for certain in this month’s Taylor Timbers Waimea Golf Championships at Greenacres is that there will be at least one new champion by the end of the 36-hole tournament.Defending men’s champion, Green-acres’ Ryan Chisnall and Tasman No1, Takaka’s Blair Riordan will be en route to Mexico where they are playing in the Mexican Amateur stroke play champs. That leaves the way clear for the next tier of mens players to contest the top honours at Greenacres biggest tourna-ment of the year. Greenacres’ No1 women, Katrina Manaena is out in-jured and will also miss her club’s

big event leaving last year’s winner Nelson’s Kathryn Maloney as one of the favourites. Kathryn beat Kat-rina by two shots last year, carding rounds of 81 and 82. Sue says the tournament, which started in the 1940s, has a great history “with many top amateurs’ names engraved on the cups”. But the tournament was also popular with club golfers of all abilities who have an opportunity to compete for some top prizes in the net and sta-bleford competitions. Sue says the entries close on May 26. For more information phone the Greenacres Golf Club on 544 8420.

Super Rugby players Billy Guyton, James Lowe and Marty Banks were on hand for Waimea Old Boys’ club day, inspiring the division one side to an important 23-17 win over Nelson, and also signing auto-graphs for junior players in the morning. The presence of their three stars was a huge boost for the club and gave the JAB players an in-sight into where rugby can take them with talent and hard work.James showed his class scoring a second half try, while Marty booted six penalties, as Star & Garter Waimea claimed the Noel Barton Trophy and the all important four competition points.Waimea are now sitting in seventh place on the Bayleys Tasman Trophy standings with a two win/two loss record, and are in fourth place in the Car Company division one championship, just two points behind second place Marist.Waimea will now travel to Blenheim on Saturday to take on Moutere. In other results from club day Super Liquor Waimea Old Boys beat Nelson 46-5 in their division two match, the Waimea Old Boys women’s team beat Stoke 49-12 and lost to Marist 22-12 in their ten-a-side games, and the Under-18 Waimea College Old Boys beat Moutere 24-17.
